Netflix brings us another revival of a 90’s series with the release of Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City, which marks the fourth instalment in this limited series which all began in 1993.
Inspired by the nine-novel series by Armistead Maupin, Netflix Limited Series Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City begins a new chapter in the beloved story. In 1993, Channel 4 and Showtime came to life as a limited television series with Laura Linney’s Mary Ann Singleton moving from Cleveland to San Francisco. There, at 28 Barbary Lane, she met its landlady, Anna Madrigal, and befriended the vibrant LGBTQ community. The series then produced a sequel in 1998 titled, More Tales of the City, followed by another in 2001 titled, Further Tales of the City.
Now in 2019, and thanks to Netflix, Mary Ann (Laura Linney) returns to present-day San Francisco and is reunited with her daughter Shawna (Ellen Page) and ex-husband Brian (Paul Gross), twenty years after leaving them behind to pursue her career. Fleeing the midlife crisis that her picture-perfect Connecticut life created, Mary Ann is quickly drawn back into the orbit of Anna Madrigal (Olympia Dukakis), her chosen family and a new generation of queer young residents living at 28 Barbary Lane.
The series stars Laura Linney (The Big C), Ellen Page (The Umbrella Academy), Paul Gross(Due South), Olympia Dukakis (Steel Magnolias), Zosia Mamet (Girls), Christopher Larkin (The 100), May Hong, Murray Bartlett (Looking), Garcia, Charlie Bartnett (Russian Doll), and Molly Ringwald (The Breakfast Club).
