Seeing both Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston again on screen was so fun since both of them both starred together in the 2011 film, Just Go With It. Now they star in yet another vacation themed Netflix Original movie, Murder Mystery, and it was an enjoyable movie to watch!
Murder Mystery follows a couple who are celebrating their anniversary by going on a vacation in Europe. However, couple gets a chance to go on a yacht thanks to millionaire Malcolm Quince’s nephew, Charles Cavendish (Luke Evans). After Malcolm Quince is murdered, the couple are involved in the crime.
Firstly, Murder Mystery might be one of the best movies that Adam Sandler has been a part of and it worked surprisingly well even though it is from Happy Madison productions. Sandler, in terms of comedy, seems to be more fresh for today’s younger audience and his humour never gets old! It’s slightly different compared to the other projects he has done previously with his character being more relatable for the audience, especially with his character (Nick Spitz) being either mainly tired or hungry, which we all can definitely relate to.
Something that felt weak in Murder Mystery, it was supporting cast and secondary characters. Although they did serve a purpose in the story, it just didn’t feel enough. None of them were entertaining and none of their characters were appealing. Another issue with this movie is the pacing. It took too long for the real action to occur. It seemed as though it wasn’t balanced out right with the comedic and crime aspect of the film. It seemed too slow paced just for a crime/comedy type of movie and then only getting to the huge action/big reveal in the last 20 minutes.
But something that was appreciated was in this movie that it wasn’t hard to keep up. Throughout the movie, it was understandable and made sense. Usually something mystery related has some plot holes, but this movie didn’t. Another thing that was appreciated, was this movie wasn’t predictable. When figuring out who was the murderer, it was not easy. This movie was the type of movie that leaves little to no evidence throughout the movie just to keep you watching. Until near the end, all the evidence was revealed followed by the murderer. But once the murderer was revealed, it still wasn’t the murderer! It turned out it was somebody else! With this movie, there were many possibilities and little details. This led to multiple framings and caused the audience to have multiple predictions. It will not disappoint the audience at all if they’re into mystery stories!
Lastly, what was appreciated in this movie was the chemistry between Aniston and Sandler. Both are great actors who are well known in the industry for decades already. Both did a great job as characters in this film, but also as a couple, it felt relatable and hilarious at the same time!
This movie surprisingly wasn’t overly cheesy, corny, or cliche. This was unexpectedly unpredictable and satisfying. Although this film does have a couple of minor flaws. This film was not a disappointment. Murder Mystery was actually one of the films that was well made through a Netflix Original and perhaps worth your time!
