As anticipation for Avengers: Endgame grows, the last film to see before the finale is Captain Marvel. Marvel fans have been waiting for a female-led superhero movie since Wonder Woman had an amazing reaction.
As a Marvel lover and fan, this movie didn’t disappoint. Like usual there was witty and funny bits and throwbacks to the 90’s, the timeframe in which the movie takes place. I loved how we get some backstory to Nick Fury and the ever favourite Agent Coulson.
One particular point that I didn’t even notice was the fact that there was no love interest which even Wonder Woman failed to do. The movie was focused on Carol Danvers’ and her hero story, not being sidetracked by a love story. As a woman, I felt really happy to see this movie and know that the message this movie sends and I even felt a little pep in my step once leaving the theatre.
I loved the costume design and it was all very cool so see a costume that actually protects the female hero instead of a bikini made of metal. Little Goose stole the show with its cuteness and towards the end, we see that Goose isn’t a normal cat, which is even better as a little pet sidekick for Captain Marvel. And Disney must really love the whole reveal of the villain because half the movie you think the villain is one person when it ends up being someone the audience and even Danvers’ trusted.
Now, ready for some spoilers? Here we go.
The movie throws you into a situation where Vers, Danver’s Kree name, has nightmares and we learn she doesn’t remember anything prior to her living with Krees. Her mentor and friend Yon-Rogg (played by Jude Law) tells her emotions are what keeps her from being the warrior she wants to be. And then off we follow them and their team on a mission to save someone from a society called Skrulls. And Vers gets attacked and taken away where they try to dissect her memories which is where we learn about her past on earth and her life. We learn about her best friend, what her job was and who she looked up to.
She then escapes where she ends up landing in 1995 in Los Angeles, crashing through a Blockbuster. As she is trying to get back with her team she meets Nick Fury and Coulson. Just when she is going to be arrested, the skrulls attack and a speed chase throughout LA begins where we later see that Coulson was one of the skrulls and he didn’t even know what was going on.
Later, we see that they have to protect a scientist who has the Core Energy to stop wars since the skrulls want to take her and her project. This leads to Fury and Vers to fight off more skrulls and learn that the scientist died while on a mission with Vers, as she learns and confirms that she was human at some point and the Carol was also on that mission and survived. To get more information on the mission, they fly to Louisiana to visit Carol’s best friend.
More skrulls attack as they get to her friend, Maria Rambeau and her daughter’s place, where they learn how really the Krees were the ones killing people and hurting the skrull people. Carol feels guilty and is even more confused because she doesn’t know who to believe. But Maria then assures her that she is human and people make mistakes. She keeps trying to remember her past and as the movie progresses, we learn the scientist Lawson was a kree herself but she was trying to free the skrulls and let them live in peace. Carol tried to destroy the project Core Energy but by doing that, she was exposed to it, causing her to now have powers like a photon blaster.
The team then tries to get the Skrulls off the planet, to be reunited with their families which they were hiding in Lawson’s secret lab in space where it was in a code that was somehow hidden in Danvers’ memory. Once they show up there, the Kree show up including Yon-Rogg. We then see Danvers fighting the Kree and even fighting with the most powerful kree which makes her even more powerful and able to save the Skrulls and send them in their merry way. While she is still fighting with Yon-Rogg, she puts him in a little ship and sends him back with a message.
We later see that Danvers is helping the Skulls go back home and make sure they have a safe trip and leaves Earth. Oh and did I mention that the cat, Goose, is really like some sort of alien that is keeping the Tesseract safe which is one of the Infinity tones! And the last scene is where Fury is naming the initiative and gets the name for it based on Carol’s name on her plane, Avengers.
And I screamed when the end credit scene showed Captain America and Black Widow with the pager from Nick Fury calling Captain Marvel and there she is united with the remaining Avengers.
I did like the movie and it exceeded my expectations and those end credit scenes were great! I wouldn’t mind watching it again but it isn’t as high up as like Winter Soldier or Avengers Infinity War.
