Legacies Recap: 1.08 ‘Maybe I Should Start From The End’

Legacies Maybe I Should Start From The End

I am so glad that Legacies is back as this is one of my new favourite shows. This week’s episode starts with Hope, Ric, and Landon waking up in a field in Fort Valley, GA and they’re not looking great. We have to go back in time to find out how they got there.

Two weeks ago, Landon was in Lawrence, Kansas, trying to locate his mother, Seylah, and he found her, which seems like good news at first. However, she doesn’t immediately believe he’s her son and she’s some sort of ninja or assassin as she threatens to take a hot iron to his face (terrible parenting). Fortunately, or unfortunately, they are interrupted by a monster. Seylah decapitates it with her sword and then moves them both to a motel.

And that then takes us to the point in the timeline where we last left Hope with her bracelet going off. She attempts to sneak out of the school at 3AM (and steal Alaric’s car) but seeing as how she’s wearing heeled boots that make noise, it’s no surprise that Alaric catches her. She explains that Landon is in trouble and he agrees to go. It’s an 18.5 hour road trip to be specific, and Alaric spends most of it quizzing Hope on geography and teaching her about osmosis.

They stop at someone’s house and Hope breaks in. It turns out to be some elderly people’s house and they realise that someone dumped Landon’s bracelet there. Hope then uses a locator spell to find him which leads them to an obvious cover-up. Seylah’s house is surrounded by a group of men who claim there’s a gas leak. Alaric sees through it and immediately lies and takes himself and Hope away. Alaric is worried and they then find the motel where Seylah and Landon are kind of bonding and talking about Hope. Seylah has now seemed to accept the fact that Landon is her son.

Minutes later, Alaric and Hope come barging in, and Seylah likes her son’s sort-of girlfriend instantly, but that isn’t important as Ric wants answers. She leaves and Alaric follows where she explains that after she served in the army, she was recruited by an intelligence organisation. It was there that she learned about the supernatural world. Her job was to keep this world a secret, so she would hunt down monsters and take them to headquarters. But then she’d forget the monsters completely and that meant that they were being sent to Malivore, which is the hell dimension that consumes creatures and wipes their existence from the collective conscious.

Seylah tells Landon that she doesn’t know who his father is and that she’s not equipped to be his mother, but Alaric knows she’s lying. Outside, the adults chat and Alaric learns more of Seylah’s story. Apparently, the organisation that Seylah worked for guards the portal to Malivore, and when they discovered that Seylah was writing everything she saw down, they threw her in. She wasn’t sure how long she was there until, one day, she was back and two years had passed. Oh, and she was pregnant too.

Alaric believes that Landon was a supernatural immaculate conception, which surprises Seylah. Alaric says that his twins were magically transplanted into Caroline’s womb by a coven of witches so his belief tolerance is high. Seylah is convinced that Landon will be better off without her so she says she’s leaving. Meanwhile, inside the motel room, Landon and Hope are talking about dating horror stories and they start making out. When Alaric returns, he catches them and kicks Hope out so he can talk to Landon.

Hope finds Seylah hotwiring her own car so that she doesn’t have to go upstairs and get her keys or face her son. Seylah claims that Landon won’t remember her, shoots a tranquilliser dart in Hope’s neck and drives off. Hope then realises what she’s doing.

Landon is apologising to Alaric for him catching the two teens making out and Alaric says that they have bigger fish to fry. Right then, a literal merman emerges in the motel bathroom. Hope barges in, throws the merman back and talks to Alaric and Landon. They all realise that just like the knife, an urn from Seylah’s apartment followed Landon. Apparently this urn is the second key to Malivore and the monsters want it. Hope decides to let them find it so they can follow it to the portal as that’s also where Seylah will be.

They make it to Triad Industries in Fort Valley, but before the merman can make it inside, a landmine blows it to pieces. Seylah does get inside and throws herself into Malivore. So, when Ric, Hope, and Landon wake up, they don’t remember anything that’s happened (and this takes us back to the beginning of the episode).

Alaric drives them all back to the school, and Landon gets to stay. Hope then goes to his room to ask him to be her boyfriend, to which he says yes. Then, she goes to Alaric to tell him everything that happened because she somehow remembers. She also brought the urn back with her as she thought it was a good idea and then it starts to glow which seems to lead us to the next episode.

As for the big bad (aka the gas leak guy), he clearly works for Triad and seeing as how Seylah left behind her photo with Landon, we will surely see more of him. (Also he’s ridiculously handsome so I’m kind of excited for it.)

Final Thoughts:

I am so glad that this show is back! I still have so many questions though. What is Malivore? And how can Hope remember Landon’s mother when Alaric and Landon can’t?
