We chat with debut author LaLa Thomas about her debut novel 16 & Pregnant, which sees the bond between two best friends is put to the test when one of them gets pregnant in this novel inspired by MTV’s iconic reality show.
Hi, LaLa! Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?
Hi! Thank you for asking. I’m the debut author of MTV’s 16 and Pregnant: A Novel, which is a story about friendship, the right to choose, Black maternal health and Black girl joy. I’m also a Dean of Culture and Instruction, who enjoys working with diverse students and I am a part-time English professor. I recently moved to the Bay Area from Las Vegas and I really love it. Besides writing, I love spending time with my three year old who also thinks she’s Spiderman.
When did you first discover your love for writing and stories?
I was about eight years old. There was a writing contest for a major TV network that I loved, so I entered. I had to create an idea for a new cartoon. I remember being so invested. I didn’t win, which crushed my little heart but also sparked my motivation to write more. After a while I ventured into other passions, but was inspired to continue my writing journey after some of my middle school students read some of my work. They pushed me everyday to not give up on writing. After ten years of persistence, I’m so glad I did not give up.
Quick lightning round! Tell us the first book you ever remember reading, the one that made you want to become an author, and one that you can’t stop thinking about!
First Book Ever Read: Ramona Quimby Series, Monster by Walter Dean Myers definitely made me want to become an author and one I can’t stop thinking about is, The Rose that Grew from Concrete, by 2Pac.
Your debut novel, 16 & Pregnant, is out now! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?
An Emotional rollercoaster that won’t disappoint (dang that was six).

Where did the inspiration for 16 & Pregnant come from?
It was mostly inspired from the hit MTV reality show, but I wanted it to be told from a Black girl’s perspective. I believe there is this stereotype that when Black girls have teen pregnancy they become high school drop outs or continue toxic cycles, but as an educator and Black girl who grew up in low income areas, I’ve experienced a different world which I wanted to create when writing this book and share with the world.
Were there any moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?
Honestly, I loved writing the scene where Erykah and Kelly go to the first big party of the year. There’s a lot to grasp in that chapter. Even though I knew a lot about pregnancy health issues from my own experiences, it was interesting to research and gain insight from experts. Out of all of the characters I created, Miguel, who is Erykah’s boyfriend and father of their child, resonated with me the most.
Can you tell us a bit about your journey of getting 16 & Pregnant published?
I had a short time frame to write, revise, and get the book ready for publication. Some might say, “Oh that’s plenty of time”, but not exactly when you work full-time and are a single mother. I honestly don’t think I could’ve done it without the support of my amazing editor and agent. It took lots of dedication, and writing sessions in almost every coffee shop in Vegas to make it happen.
Do you have any advice for those who may have set some writing resolutions for the new year?
Yes. Find people who are genuine and can give true feedback and don’t get discouraged by others’ progress. Everyone’s journey is different and unique. Set a reasonable goal, find a friend or someone you trust who will hold you accountable and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there.
What’s next for you?
I’m working on the sequel to 16 and Pregnant, which will be told from Erykah and Miguel’s POV. I’m hoping that Teen Mom will be ready for readers by then, but if not, it will for sure be on shelves in 2024!
