Help! I’ve been ensnared by a brilliant television show by the name of Imposters and unfortunately for those around me, there has been non-stop talking about it so now I’m here to tell you to watch it.
Despite being pretty well in the know about new television series, it seems this one was missed when it premiered back in February 2017. I had only come across it after seeing advertisements for the second season premiering on Stan (an Australian streaming service). After searching for a series to watch, it seems Imposters would fill in some time and provide some background noise…
However, I was hooked in the first fifteen minutes.
The series premiere sees newlyweds Ava and Ezra’s marriage shatter when he discovers his wife of one month has disappeared with all of his money. She leaves behind a video explaining the situation and a folder of sensitive information that will destroy his family if he goes looking for her. Ezra goes into a downward spiral and he even winds up attempting suicide—except the oven won’t turn on unless the door is closed, the smell of bleach is too difficult to stomach, and the extension cord snaps when he tries hanging himself.
Wallowing in failure and loss, he receives a knock on the door from Richard, a FBI agent claiming there’s an issue with Ezra’s wife. He gets caught in a lie when he says Federal “Burrow” of Investigation, and then reveals he was also married to Ava, except her name was Alice and she looked different. Richard confesses he was conned too and she took all of his money, and funnily enough, the pair decide to join forces in the hope of finding her to seek revenge or even justice.
Meanwhile, our con artist is actually named Maddie and she works with Max and Sally who assume roles nearby their target to either make Maddie’s “character” more believable, such as a family member, or as a new employee to help gather further intel on how to get their payday. The trio work for a man referred to as the Doctor who provides them with who they will be “playing”, their target, and a significant amount of information, including their habits, interests, family and more. To a degree, the Doctor controls them and receives the majority of whatever they score, although they’ve never really met him.
The majority of season one follows their new target Gary Heller who works at a bank and has a personality that is somewhat repulsive due to the way he treats people. Unfortunately not everything goes to plan with this “game” as not everybody is in on what really is happening and Maddie finds herself wanting more. Plus then there’s Richard and Ezra traipsing across America in search of their wife and since they have almost no money, they have to learn the art of the con themselves in order to find her. A hot lead they spent quite a bit of money on to get only leads them to another one of Maddie’s cons named Jules, and she decides to join the boys on their quest.
Imposters is a fast-paced and cleverly written series that will hook you in quickly. The episodes flow into one another and it causes you to just keep watching to see what kind of shit the heartbroken trio or Maddie will find themselves in next. What is so great is how well they’ve blended comedy, drama, and action in each episode, which is something you rarely find with television series. It’s hard to compare the series to anything, perhaps it could be considered a blend of Chuck and Orphan Black? But in reality, this show is incredibly unique that it shouldn’t be compared to anything.
The series stars Inbar Lavi (Prison Break), Rob Heaps, Parker Young (Arrow), Marianne Rendón, Stephen Bishop (Being Mary Jane), Brian Benben (Private Practice), Katherine LaNasa (Satisfaction), and Uma Thurman (Pulp Fiction).
I highly recommend you give the series a go and if you’re enticed, you can find both seasons currently on Netflix, Stan, and Bravo.
