We chat with author Hannah D. Sharpe about Between Lies and Revenge, which is a gripping debut of domestic suspense, where a daring jewel heist becomes a lifeline for two women entangled in a web of deceit, pushing them to the brink of trust and betrayal in their quest for redemption and survival.
What inspired you to write “Between Lies and Revenge”?
The idea came from a combination of personal experiences and my fascination with the complexities of human nature. Specifically, I wanted to explore themes of betrayal and redemption through characters that live on the edge of societal norms. My background in nursing, especially in emergency situations, has shown me the many faces people wear and the secrets they keep, which directly influenced the development of my characters, Elle and Olivia.
Can you tell us about the main characters in your novel?
Absolutely. Elle is a former convict with a past shrouded in mystery and pain. She’s a gemologist, which gives her a unique skill set that’s central to the plot. Olivia, on the other hand, is drowning in debt and trapped in a life that looks perfect on the outside but is crumbling on the inside. Both characters are crafted to show the lengths people will go to when pushed to their limits, and how they find resilience and cunning they never knew they had.
Your book delves deeply into the world of MLM schemes. Why choose this setting?
I chose MLMs as a backdrop because they’re a fascinating microcosm of broader societal dynamics—especially how they exploit trust and friendship for financial gain. I’ve witnessed first-hand the impact these schemes can have on individuals and communities, and I wanted to highlight both the allure and the danger they represent.
What do you hope readers take away from “Between Lies and Revenge”?
I hope readers see the story as a mirror to the complexity of trust and personal motive. I want to challenge readers to think about what they would do in the shoes of Elle and Olivia, and reflect on the moral ambiguities that each of us might face in desperate situations. More than anything, I want it to be a gripping read that keeps them thinking long after they turn the last page.
How has your professional background influenced your writing?
My nursing career, particularly in emergency medicine, has been invaluable. It’s taught me a lot about crisis situations and human reactions under pressure, which I bring into my writing to add depth and realism to how characters react in high-stakes scenarios. My medical knowledge also helps me add authenticity when describing the more technical aspects of the story.
Any advice for aspiring thriller writers?
Dive deep into your characters. The best thrillers have memorable characters who make the suspense feel real and urgent. Also, don’t shy away from doing research—whether it’s the psychological aspects of your characters or the procedural details. Lastly, keep your readers guessing. A well-placed twist can turn a good thriller into a great one.
What are you working on next?
I’m currently working on my next project that will be another suspenseful novel!
