For several months now, Australia has been battling fires with over six million hectares (60,000 sq km or 14.8 million acres) having now burned, at least 22 people have lost their lives, more than 1500 homes having been destroyed, and it has been estimated that 480 million animals have lost their lives. In the state of New South Wales alone, there are 146 bush and grass fires burning and 65 are not contained as of January 6th 2020.
This past week has seen international media begin to fully convey to the world just how bad the fires have been and donations are now pouring in with most notably Australian comedian Celeste Barber’s Facebook Fundraiser raising over $34 million so far.
Here at The Nerd Daily, we have several Australian contributors, including myself, that have either been directly affected by fires or know several people who are currently being affected so this is an important cause for us.
Over the weekend, Australian author Emily Gale announced a Twitter auction: #AuthorsForFireys where authors and creators will auction various items off and the winner of the item will then donate directly to CFA (Country Fire Authority), which is a volunteer and community based fire and emergency services organisation. Since then, authors and creators around the world have been auctioning off signed books, illustrations, unique experiences, one-off opportunities, and writers’ services to raise funds.
Most auctions run until 11pm Sydney/Melbourne time on Saturday 11th Jan 2020. You can find out more information on participating on their website or head to the #AuthorsForFireys hashtag on Twitter to start searching and bidding on items! We will be adding links to as many items as we can and we will regularly update this post with new auctions below.
If you would like to donate outside of the auction, you can donate at:
- Celeste Barber’s Facebook Fundraiser
- NSW Rural Fire Service
- Victoria Country Fire Service
- South Australia Fire Service
- Australian Red Cross Disaster and Recovery Relief Fund
- WIRES Emergency Relief Fund For Wildlife
- Port Macquarie Koala Hospital
