Shadowhunters Recap: 3.06 ‘A Window Into An Empty Room’

Shadowhunters A Window Into An Empty Room Dominic Sherwood

Well, this week’s episode of Shadowhunters was certainly a mixed bag of emotions with the introduction of a significant character from the book series, trouble in paradise for Malec and Clace, and the return of ex-Shadowhunter, Maryse Lightwood.

On last week’s episode, Magnus and Alec found themselves in different places about their future together; Izzy went on a date with Charlie; Clary summoned Ithuriel for information on Jace only to get Ithuriel killed and a slice of her soul taken; and Lilith used Clary’s soul in an elixir to make Jace forget his love for Clary so he can become her soldier completely.

Crazy Newbie Vampire On The Loose

The episode kicks off with Kyle in protective gear and a GoPro to test out Simon’s Daylighter mark. Simon brings up Kyle meeting Maia, so Kyle punches him only to be thrown backwards by the mark.

Heidi (Tessa Mossey) returns this episode and she gets all glammed up, while a body hangs upside down behind her dripping with blood. When Simon arrives at his apartment, he finds Heidi and he realises who she is. She reveals that she had his blood on her lips when Quinn killed her and Raphael raised her from the ground. She tells him that they belong together—cue the crazy wannabe girlfriend drama!

Simon explains the Heidi situation to Maia, but Maia thinks she just needs someone as she knows what it’s like to be abandoned by the person that made her. He later receives a text from Raphael, so he goes to meet him but he finds Heidi. She explains what Raphael did to her to see if she was a Daylighter and Simon feels for her and says he’ll be there for her, which she mistakes and heads in for a kiss. She’s not too pleased to find out that he’s got a girlfriend. Kyle wants Simon to lay low, but Maia doesn’t care as she’s not afraid of Heidi.

Trouble In Paradise

Alec makes Magnus breakfast and comes out with telling Magnus to save the spatula he used for the mementos box. Alec is upset about becoming old and being a burden to Magnus, and so Magnus claims that his concerns could be because Alec has never been in a relationship before, which causes Alec to leave.

Maryse drops by to see Alec and Izzy, but she’s not allowed in due to the loss of her Shadowhunter status until Alec lets her in. Maryse confesses to Izzy that she feels completely lost so Izzy proposes they go out as a family and Maryse asks Izzy to bring Charlie.

Clary talks to Luke about the Owl and she wants to tell everyone what she learned from Ithuriel, but Luke is against it as it will unravel anything. Clary believes Jace to be with the Silent Brothers, however, he’s in full Owl mode with Lilith and the pair even kiss so she can give energy to him. Owl Jace then goes on the hunt for a virtuous follower, until he’s interrupted by Alec who’s surprised to see him away from the Silent Brothers. Jace and Alec head back to the Institute and Clary is thrilled to see him, but she notices that he’s being a little strange with her.

Alec, Izzy, Jace and Maryse are at the Hunter’s Moon for dinner, and Maryse feels a little awkward with Shadowhunters staring at her. Alec and Jace act like typical brothers when they learn Izzy has a new guy, and they’re quite surprised to find out that he’s a mundane. When Charlie walks in, Jace sees his energy signature—perfect for the Church of Talto. Alec thinks it’s hilarious Charlie believes they are jewellers until he receives a message from Magnus saying he’s not coming. Simon is also at the Hunter’s Moon to keep an eye on Maia and then Luke turns up surprises to see Maryse at the bar. The two bond over their shared excommunication and oh hello, there are certainly some sparks between them!

Meanwhile, Alec has been getting sauced when he goes to talk to Underhill (a fellow Shadowhunter) again and the two get their flirt on a little. Underhill helps Alec sneak away from his family so they don’t see him in his drunken state. As they wait for a taxi, Alec continues to talk about Magnus. Underhill tells Alec not to be so hard on himself as Magnus might not understand their Shadowhunter ways.

An Exciting New Character

Clary shows Magnus a sketch of the demon that killed Ithuriel and using his magic, he realises the energy is the same kind that corrupted the ley lines. Magnus sends a fire message to someone to see if they can identify the demon when Clary confesses that she thinks something is off with Jace. Magnus receives a reply from Brother Zachariah, which will excite book fans immensely.

Clary and Magnus wait for Brother Zachariah and Magnus confesses his problems with Alec. Brother Zachariah appears and speaks to them with his mind, but looks perfectly fine in comparison to other Silent Brothers and there’s a great story behind this. He gives them books about forgotten demons and says that any friend of Will Herondale is a friend of his. Clary perks up at the mention of Herondale and asks if Zachariah helped with Jace’s treatment, but he informs them he never came to them.

Not Your Typical Brawl At A Bar

Izzy talks to Simon about Maryse and she gives him a kiss on the cheek for his kind words, which Heidi sees. Later on, Heidi attacks Izzy, but Izzy manages to knock her down just as Simon comes racing in to explain the situation. Izzy feels for her when she finds out that she was Raphael’s experiment, but she believes Heidi still needs to be turned over for her actions. Simon vouches for her and Izzy reluctantly lets them go. Heidi still mistakes Simon’s actions, but instead he turns her over to the Praetor Lupus to help rehabilitate her. Kyle tells him that he did the right thing, but he isn’t so sure.

Jace asks Charlie to head outside, but Izzy turns up and Charlie notices blood on her arm and he questions what is up with Izzy. Luke’s partner Ollie comes to visit him at the Hunter’s Moon, and it seems she’s also a perfect candidate for the Church of Talto so Jace goes after her when she leaves.

Meanwhile, Clary and Magnus come through a portal when Magnus realises how Jace has been acting towards Clary and that it could be connected with the elixir he concocted. He thinks the woman was masking her power and they decide they need to find Jace as soon as possible.

The Owl attacks Ollie and begins to breathe the demonic energy into her when Clary and Magnus turn up. Magnus uses his magic, but is thrown back by the Owl’s abilities. Luke comes from behind and fires several bullets into the Owl which removes the mask and reveals Jace. He escapes, but unfortunately Ollie has already been turned and she escapes too.

Final Thoughts?

I quite enjoyed this episode and thought that each character and couple got just the right amount of attention—not too little and not too much. It’s always fun when they pair characters together and in this case, Clary and Magnus got a little screen time together and you’re most definitely in for a treat when Magnus is involved.

Maryse’s return was surprising, and you would have thought Izzy and Alec would have gone to her or at least been there for her when she was de-runed. It will be interesting if they do pair Luke and Maryse together as it is a pairing that makes sense with Jocelyn out of the picture—that is, if she stays dead. This is a drama after all. It was also nice to see the Lightwood family out in a casual setting and making jokes with Alec and Jace picking on their little sister. It really helped remind us viewers that they are a family instead of just fighters all the time.

As for Brother Zachariah, the introduction of his character was unexpected! I believe the casting is spot on, however, surely the hair and make-up department could have made his hair look a little better rather than it look like some wig you purchased from a party store? It really just made his character appearance look poor, which is somewhat disappointing as he is quite the significant character from the book series.

Judging by next week’s preview, the relationship between Maia and Kyle will be revealed and Clary seems to realise that Jace doesn’t have any feelings towards her… but she probably gets dropped safely by him somehow and it’s just cut this way for the D-R-A-M-A.
