We chat with author Lauryn Hamilton Murray about Heir of Storms, which is an explosive start to a YA romantasy trilogy about dangerous magic, forbidden love, and a cut-throat competition for the throne in an empire where crowns are not inherited — they’re won.
Hi, Lauryn! Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?
I was born and grew up in Edinburgh, Scotland. I have a degree in English Literature and a Masters in Creative Writing. When I’m not writing I’m probably reading, and when I’m not reading I’m probably hiking with my dogs, Huxley and Ziggy, or binge-watching The Vampire Diaries!
When did you first discover your love for writing and stories?
My family – particularly my grandparents – read to me from a very young age. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t love stories, both reading and writing them.
Quick lightning round! Tell us:
- The first book you ever remember reading: The Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton
- The one that made you want to become an author: Matilda by Roald Dahl
- The one that you can’t stop thinking about: How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff
Your debut novel, Heir of Storms, is out now! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?
Suspenseful. Exciting. Empowering. Hopeful. Fun!
What can readers expect?
Elemental magic, a high-stakes competition, deadly trials, enchanted talismans, a grumpy/sunshine sibling dynamic, a stepping-into-your-power character arc, and a love triangle… sort of!
Where did the inspiration for Heir of Storms come from?
Blaze has been living in my head since I was twelve. I have this memory looking out of the car window during a storm and thinking, Wouldn’t it be cool to control the rain? I also knew I wanted to tell a story from the perspective of an outsider, particularly one who was trapped on the inside – Blaze can’t escape her past, or her destiny.
Were there any moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?
I loved exploring Blaze’s emotional journey, as well as her romantic relationships! I also loved any scene that included her twin brother, Flint, who is just so much fun to write.
Did you face any challenges whilst writing? How did you overcome them?
It was my first time writing a book, so I didn’t really know what I was doing! But I knew who my characters were, and I had a clear sense of beginning, middle and end, as well as plans for the rest of the series! I also struggled with the little voice of doubt. I didn’t know if it was any good, or if anyone would ever want to read it. I chose to ignore those fears, and I’m very glad I did!
This is your debut novel! What was the road to becoming a published author like for you?
It was a bit of a whirlwind! I had no experience or knowledge of the publishing industry until I signed with my incredible agent – Catherine Cho at Paper Literary. I’ve really enjoyed learning about the process and working with the brilliant teams at Penguin UK and Macmillan US.
What’s next for you?
I’m currently working on edits for Book 2!
Lastly, what books have you enjoyed reading this year? Are there any you’re looking forward to picking up?
I was lucky enough to read advance copies of A Beautiful Evil by Bea Fitzgerald and Thorn Season by Keira Azar, and both were fantastic! I’m really looking forward to picking up a copy of A Dance of Lies by Brittney Arena – I’ve heard great things.
