NaNoWriMo 2017: Week 1

Written by Anita Olsen Stoebakk

The first week of NaNoWriMo is officially over with only 3 more weeks to go! Who’s stressed out? Not me, I assure you!

I am, as many of you already know, undertaking the grand challenge of doing NaNoWriMo this year, and as if that wasn’t enough, I decided to livestream writing workshops twice a week throughout the month of November. In these workshops I talk about my NaNoWriMo experiences, workshop some story ideas, and share my best tips and tricks for getting through the month.

Below you will find the livestreams from this past week with one from Monday October 30th and the other from Thursday November 2nd.

In Episode 1 of the writing workshop, I discuss what kind of novel I am planning on writing, read out some excerpts from my writing tests and talk about how to create well-rounded characters!

In Episode 2, I am joined by cosplayer and fellow writer IngridBeast cosplay who shared her plans for her NaNo-novel, her thoughts on how to write good dialog, and how to avoid misusing words. She also revealed how she uses her experiences as an actor as a tool to improve her writing.

So far, my progress is slow but steady. I’ve hit over 6000 words total, which means that I am a little bit behind on my ideal word count per day. I have not been able to write every single day though, so I was expecting that to be the case. I am however, feeling the pressure, and I constantly need to remind myself not to go back and edit my mistakes. I am a sucker for editing, it’s like catnip to me!

This coming week will also be extra challenging because I just started a new job and will be hosting some RPG, cosplay workshops and shows at a local gaming convention all weekend. I will do my best to not lag too much behind though, wish me luck!

If you want to follow my progress more closely, ask me questions, or need help with your novel, you can tune in to my live writing workshops on YouTube. I stream them HERE every Monday and Thursday at 8.00 pm UTC+1, unless otherwise is stated.

Are you doing NaNoWriMo? How is it going? Leave a comment and let us know!
