Q&A: Gabriella Lepore, Author of ‘This Is Why We Lie’

Riverdale meets One of Us Is Lying and Thirteen Reasons Why in this gripping page-turner told through dual perspectives of two teens who aren’t always being completely honest with each other…

We chat with author Gabriella Lepore about her latest book release, This Is Why We Lie, along with writing, book recommendations, and more!

Hi, Gabriella! Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

Hi! I’m a YA author from South Wales. I’m a reader, book collector, and a Leo!

When did you first discover your love for writing?

I was around 10 years old when I realised I wanted to be an author. I loved bookshops, and that feeling of getting lost in a new world. I started writing short stories in primary school and continued all throughout high school. I wrote my first full manuscript in my early 20s and kept going from there!

Quick lightning round! Tell us the first book you ever remember reading!

Howl’s Moving Castle!

Your standalone YA thriller novel, This Is Why We Lie, is out September 21st 2021! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

Twisty, gritty, deceptive, heartfelt, and fiery!

What can readers expect?

Readers can expect a cast of potential suspects embroiled in a murder investigation. Small seaside town, prep school scandals, and reform school secrets. Lust, lies, and twists!

Where did the inspiration for This Is Why We Lie come from?

I think my inspiration came from too much time spent on the rocky coastline near my home, and the shadows that move in the darkness. I wanted to tell Adam’s story about his life at Rookwood, the closed-world reform school, and his brotherhood forged in fire.

Can you tell us about any challenges you faced while writing and how you were able to overcome them?

It was a challenge trying to present the characters as sympathetic whilst also potentially murderous! You’ll have to let me know if you think I managed it!

Were there any favourite moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?

I enjoyed writing from both Adam’s and Jenna’s perspectives because it allowed me to explore two totally different characters experiencing the same situation. I loved Adam’s complex relationships with his friends too.

What’s the best and the worst writing advice you have received?

The best writing advice I’ve received is to show not tell. I’m not sure if I’ve had any particularly bad advice, as I suppose it’s all open to interpretation. Although, self-doubt can give terrible advice!

What’s next for you?

My second YA mystery/thriller, THE LAST ONE TO FALL, will be out October 2022 with Inkyard Press. A little hint: Six walked in, but only five came out alive.

Lastly, do you have any book recommendations for our readers?

Yes! There are some great books out at the moment! Some of my favourite mystery authors include: Holly Jackson, Karen M. McManus, Lucy Foley, and Katherine Laurin. Also, check out Killing Time by Brenna Ehrlich, set to be released March 2022.
