After returning last week with its mid-season premiere, which was slightly disappointing after a good finale, this episode may have made you feel like a proud parent as it really showed just how far the show has come since its premiere in 2016. ‘You Are Not Your Own’ was an all around great episode from its plot to the dialogue and the acting, especially that of Alan Van Sprang and Harry Shum Jr who swapped characters
Couples, Flirtation & A New Guy In The Mix
While Shadowhunters hasn’t been too over the top with romance, it’s still present or underlying in each episode. Unfortunately for Clary and Simon’s new relationship, a relationship which is despised by many, seems as though it has somewhat been glossed over. As the two snuggle, Clary receives a message from Jace, the boy who is no longer her brother and she \still hasn’t told Simon about it, especially since Simon’s paranoia level is at all time high after his encounter with Raphael.
The next couple to be waking up, but not together, is Isabelle and Sebastian, and let’s hope it doesn’t progress any further for these two. The soon head to the Institute where Clary, Jace and Alec are all welcoming at first, until Sebastian starts showing off his Greater Demon knowledge which causes Alec to become dismissive towards him.
Izzy and Simon chat about his problem with Raphael, which also causes Izzy to open up about her own problems. She then devises a plan which involves meeting Raphael’s much older sister, because he is a vampire after all. After sending a picture of Rosa and Simon together, the two celebrate at Jade Wolf where Izzy accidentally tells Simon about Jace and Clary’s news, but before he has time to process, a portal opens and out spills a gang of vampires. Raphael threatens Simon a little more severely but the wolves come to his rescue and he runs into the daylight, which means his secret is out.
Shall we also mention the non-siblings? The two are approached by Inquisitor Herondale who wants to test their angelic abilities and although Jace disapproves, Clary wants to which then convinces Jace also. This leads to the two sparring where Jace activates one of his runes again and shares an intimate moment with Clary.
The Ol’ Switcheroo
At the end of last week’s episode, we saw something strange happen with Magnus and Valentine and it’s revealed that they have switched bodies! As Magnus-ified Valentine returns to Bane’s, he finds Azazel who demands the Mortal Cup in exchange for switching them back. Things begin to become a little more complicated when Alec calls Magnus and receives a strange response. Naturally he heads to Magnus’ apartment and is confronted by Azazel so he whips out his bow, rather coolly I might add, and shoots Azazel right in the spot Sebastian mentioned to send him right back to his realm. After the strange encounter, Alec angrily visits a distraught Valentine whom claims to be Magnus and tries to convince him he is telling the truth by mentioning memories the two share. Unfortunately it seems as though Alec sort of believes him, but doesn’t want to commit to it. He approaches Jace about the situation who shuts it down which then leads to the real Valentine visiting Magnus who is getting ready to be executed.
Meanwhile, Clary has a little sit-down with Sebastian and the two talk about her inability to draw her runes as well as family and Sebastian believes it is to do with Clary losing all of her family, especially with Jace telling her that they’re not actually siblings.
The Big Reveal
After the Clave denies Inquisitor Herondale’s request to execute Valentine, she decides to take matters into her own hands and Alec is apparently going to help her. Just as Herondale is about to proceed, Jace encounters the real Valentine and the two get a message to them revealing Azazel switched them. While that was a reveal, it was followed by an even bigger reveal in which Valentine tells Inquisitor Herondale that Jace is actually her son’s child, which now means Jace has had three surnames! Valentine then tells Inquisitor Herondale he will kill her grandson if she does not meet his demands.
Next thing we know, Valentine is at Magnus’ followed by Alec, Clary and Sebastian who need to bring down the wards in order to get in. With her power not reliable, Sebastian gets Clary to feel pain to push that emotion into her runes. They manage to break the wards just as the two switch back to themselves and Valentine races towards a portal, which only takes him right back to his cell at the Institute!
After the big moment, Simon and Izzy stroll through the park very couple-like; Clary thanks Sebastian for his help and he asks her to dinner where she politely declines; Clary and Simon talk about Jace and Clary says it doesn’t change anything; and Inquisitor Herondale gives Jace the family Herondale ring. What did you think of the episode?
