Netflix has an abundance of K-dramas in its catalogue, and maybe you’ve already watched and loved some of them, but today I’d like to talk about Itaewon Class! Based on a webtoon of the same name, it follows an ex-con and his friends and their fight to make their ambitious dreams of their own street bar a reality. It’s an underrated yet incredible show that will definitely captivate you the minute you start watching. So, with that, here are a few reasons why you should watch Itaewon Class!
It’s Not Just A Love Story
When people think of K-drama, they usually think of love stories or romantic drama. And although Itaewon Class has an interesting romance itself, it’s never the main plot of the story. The story kicks off when the main character, Park Saeroyi, punches a fellow classmate (and son of his father’s boss) after seeing him bully another classmate. That’s the start of all the torments, the wrongdoings, revenge, plot twists, and moral lessons.
At its core, Itaewon Class is a story about revenge, about finding family amongst the people around you, and about fighting greed, power, discrimination, inequality in social class, and more.
It Has Complex and Interesting Characters
Itaewon Class has complex and interesting characters that will have you invested in no time. Park Saeroyi is an ex-con, the underdog. He has been broken down and wronged so many times, yet he continues to live by what he thinks is right. There’s also Jo Yi-seo who, in my opinion, perfectly embodies a Slytherin character. She’s cunning and resourceful, but also loyal and brave. Oh Soo-ah, on the other hand, is an independent woman who made a name for herself.
Supporting characters also have their own stories to tell and their arcs are never neglected. Instead, every character was fleshed out and we see them all grow and develop throughout the show.
It Has Diversity and It Tackles Several Issues
Itaewon Class shines light on several issues such as power imbalance and social class inequality. Since the series also features diverse characters, discrimination towards gender, sexuality, and racism are explored. The show has tackled these real-life issues in such a wonderful way that will make you root for the characters and want more of the story.
The Romance Is Swoon Worthy
Alright, let’s talk about the romance. I mentioned previously that the romance never overshadows the main plot, but that doesn’t mean it’s not something to look out for. The romance in Itaewon Class is swoon-worthy! Between a childhood crush and an ever loyal employee, you’ll have plenty of time to figure out who you’re rooting for.
There Are Great Friendships and A Dynamic Found Family Trope
The found family trope is strong in this one! As Park Saeroyi reclaims his life after he did time, he recruits old friends and unlikely acquaintances one by one to help him bring his dream to life. Episode after episode, we see their little group grow closer and stronger as they face challenges thrown their way. It’s totally sweet and wholesome!
There’s An Excellent Soundtrack
Whether you understand Korean or not, you’ll definitely appreciate the soundtrack of this show. Every line and every scene is magnified by the various theme songs playing in the background. Whether it be romantic, intense, melancholic, or inspiring, the soundtrack is there to make everything even better.
Above All, It’s Inspiring
Itaewon Class is inspiring in so many ways. It will definitely teach you a lesson or two about life, and I guarantee you, each character will also leave you at least one moral lesson at the end of the show.
If you’re looking for the next K-drama to watch, or just simply browsing through Netflix looking for a new media content to consume, give Itaewon Class a try!
