EPIX begins to dabble more in original drama series with this year with the release of Perpetual Grace, LTD. followed by Pennyworth at the end of next month.
Perpetual Grace, LTD. is a 10-episode modern noir drama, which follows James, a young grifter, as he attempts to prey upon Pastor Byron Brown, who turns out to be far more dangerous than he suspects. The pastor and his wife Lillian—known to their parishioners as Pa and Ma—have used religion to bilk hundreds of innocent people out of their life savings.
CHARACTERS
Pastor Byron Brown (Sir Ben Kingsley): Known to his parishioners as “Pa,” he is a pastor who has used religion to bilk hundreds of innocent men and women out of their life savings.
James (Jimmi Simpson): A disgraced firefighter who seizes a chance, illicit opportunity to reverse his life’s worsening course. When his plan veers dangerously off track, James must call on strength and fortitude he did not know he possessed in order to survive it all.
Lillian Brown/Ma (Jacki Weaver): Ma resembles at first glance a modest, dutiful church lady. She’s Pa’s willing accomplice, and his counterpart in regard to potency and cruelty.
Hector Contreras (Luis Guzman): Hector is a Mexican sheriff whose misplaced hope in the romantic pursuit of a used car saleswoman drives him to engage in James and Paul’s financially lucrative proposition, mistakenly assuming the simplicity of detaining a meek-seeming older couple (Ma and Pa) for two weeks, only to learn the couple is anything but meek.
Paul Allen Brown (Damon Herriman): Paul is the wayward son of Ma and Pa and the architect of the scheme to fleece his own parents out of millions. But when his new partner in the plan, James, assumes Paul’s identity as designed, we learn James may or may not be assuming the identity of a psychopath.
New Leaf (Chris Conrad): New Leaf is a former convict whose attempt at legitimacy via small business ownership is thwarted by Ma and Pa. Losing everything, he directs that violence and intensity toward hunting the stranger he believes to be responsible – the same identity James just assumed.
Uncle Dave (Kurtwood Smith): Uncle Dave is the devoted brother of Ma, who’s shunned in the community after a wrongful conviction drastically upends his humdrum way of life. But if ever restored in freedom and in reputation, he would have the ability to expose James and Paul’s entire scheme.
Tom Walker (Terry O’Quinn): Tom is an exceptionally competent and persistent Texas Ranger whose investigation into the death of a young girl lands him in Half Acre where his primary suspect, Paul Allen Brown, has resurfaced.
Scotty Sholes (Hana Mae Lee): Scotty is the accountant for Our Lady of Perpetual Grace who has access to the church’s financial records after Ma and Pa go missing and becomes a dangerous obstacle for James.
Donny (Timothy Spall): Donny, who after being released from decades of incarceration, chooses to spend his final years of freedom exacting revenge on the man who betrayed and imprisoned him – Pa.
