9 Book Series To Read Based On Your Favourite Shadowhunters Series

Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunters Chronicles is beloved by many and once you’re done reading the latest instalment, you might be looking for some other books and series to read. The Mortal Instruments, The Infernal Devices, and The Dark Artifices series take part in the Shadowhunter world, but each series follows a different set of characters while also being set in different time periods. We’ve rounded up a couple of suggestions based on each!


THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS

This is Cassandra Clare’s first series and the one that first introduced us to the Shadowhunter world! This series is all about Clary Fairchild as she is introduced to a whole new side of the world where ‘all the stories are true’. Clary learns that she is half angel, which makes her a demon hunter! Clary and her friends all deal with relationships, villains, and everything else in between.

The Vampire Academy and its spin-off Bloodlines also have a big set of characters, lots of drama, forbidden romances and very swoonworthy characters. It follows Rose Hathaway, the protector of Lissa Dragomir who is a vampire. Rose starts developing feelings for an older guardian and they are faced with a greater enemy. Bloodlines follows Sydney Sage who is an Alchemist. She has been brought up believing that vampires are evil, but when she is sent to protect the princess, she discovers that there is more to these ‘evil’ vampires. 

Maximum Ride is all about six kids who have wings and can fly, plus they all also have other powers. However, they don’t know what these powers mean and they are on the run. These books are perfect for fans of TMI as they also revolve around teens with magical abilities, There is plenty of drama, a fight for justice and some badass characters.

The Lunar Chronicles is ideal to read after TMI. These books are sci-fi fairytale retellings set in the future with each book being a different retelling, such as Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Snow White. The first book in the series is about Cinder who is a cyborg and her stepmother treats her horribly, but when she meets Prince Kai, her life gets even more complicated. The Lunar Chronicles are perfect for fans of TMI as they also have badass characters, great humour, and a group of teens fighting to save their world.


THE INFERNAL DEVICES

The Infernal Devices is Cassandra Clare’s second published series, but chronologically, it occurs before The Mortal Instruments. This series is set in 1878 and follows Tessa Grey as she travels from America to London. Tessa is trying to find her brother, but she meets Will Herondale and Jem Carstairs at the London Institute. This book is less action packed and diverse than TMI, but it reads like a beautiful historical fiction and has romances to cry and scream over.

The Doon series by Carey Corp and Lorie Langdon is perfect for fans of TID as it is set in Scotland and all about two girls from America who travel to the magical town called Doon. Vee and Kenna were just meant to explore Scotland, but they are transported to a quaint town and it is there that they meet the princes and want to stay in Doon, but there are secrets hidden in Doon and are the girls ready to give up everything they know to stay?

Daughter of Smoke and Bone is all about Karou, a girl with blue hair and able to speak all languages including ones that are not human at all. When black handprints start turning up around Prague, Karou must try to save the world she knows and she also has to figure out what the mysterious Akiva wants. This is a story about devils, angels, and everything in between.

A Darker Shade of Magic is set in London, Kell is one of the last Antari and he can travel between parallel Londons. Kell is a smuggler, but he officially works for the Maresch Empire in Red London. But when he meets Lila Bard, his plans change and they both need to fight to stay alive. This book is also set in London, just like TID, and has a great set of characters and magic that will leave you in awe.


THE DARK ARTIFICES

The Dark Artifices takes place a few years after The Mortal Instruments and follows Emma Carstairs and her parabatai Julian Blackthorn. Their lives have been destroyed by the war and they are fighting for a new normal. They discover a demon plot in Los Angeles and Julian’s half brother, who has been living in faerie, suddenly turns up.

Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus is perfect if you love The Dark Artifices (TDA) as it has a beachy feel, a great set of unique characters, and lots of drama. Percy Jackson is all about Percy and he’s a demi-god who is still trying to figure everything out. This series will make you laugh out loud and you will learn lots about Greek mythology. The Heroes of Olympus series is a spin-off from Percy Jackson as it follows new characters who are a bit older and there’s always a lot going on!

 

Six of Crows is all about six teenagers who set out to pull off a near impossible heist. This book is perfect for TDA fans as it has great characters, an amazing plot, and it will have you frantically flicking to the next page.

 

The Falconer is great for fans of TDA and TID and it follows Aileana who is a fairy hunter. This book takes place in 1844 Edinburgh and combines Scottish folklore with lots of drama. If you love the fairy aspect in TDA and love the setting/time period of TID, this series is perfect for you.
