The 78th Annual Golden Globes Awards nominations have been announced, and, with it being the first major televised awards event, awards season has officially—finally—commenced!
Among the most nominated films were Promising Young Woman, Mank, and The Trial of the Chicago 7. Netflix dominated—perhaps unsurprisingly, considering the year saw more streaming releases than theatrical ones—with a total of 42 nominations across both film and TV categories.
And most notably: the Best Director (Motion Picture) category featured a historic three nominations for women, Emerald Fennell, Regina King, and Chloé Zhao, two of whom were women of colour. This marks the first time ever that three women were nominated in this category in the same year, as well as the first time in six years (since Ava DuVernay’s nomination for Selma back in 2015) that there has a been a woman nominee. Chloé Zhao’s nomination is even more historic, being the first Asian woman director to earn a nomination.
The 78th Annual Golden Globes ceremony is expected to air live on Sunday, February 28 at 8:00pm EST. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will host.
