The CW’s Supergirl debuted its season 4 trailer at San Diego Comic-Con and it teases a new threat, a new suit, and a whole lot of action.
For those who may not know, Supergirl is an action-adventure drama based on the DC character Kara Zor-El, (Melissa Benoist). Twelve-year-old Kara escaped the doomed planet Krypton and was sent to Earth where she was raised by a foster family. Kara grew up in the shadow of her foster sister, Alex (Chyler Leigh), and learned to conceal the phenomenal powers she shares with her famous cousin, Superman, in order to keep her identity a secret. Years later, Kara was living in National City and still concealing her powers, when a plane crash threatened Alex’s life and Kara took to the sky to save her. Now, Kara balances her work as a reporter for CatCo Worldwide Media with her work for the Department of Extra-Normal Operations (DEO), a super-secret government organisation whose mission is to keep National City – and the Earth – safe from sinister threats. As Kara struggles to navigate her relationships and her burgeoning life as a reporter, her heart soars as she takes to the skies as Supergirl.
In the new trailer, we see the series will be heading back down to Earth, which executive producer Robert Rovner confirmed during the panel. “Last year, we were in outer space a lot. This year, we wanted to make the show a little more grounded. We wanted to take this opportunity to reflect on some of the things that are happening in our world.”
Executive producer Jessica Queller further elaborated this as “Kara Danvers the reporter is going to be as big of a hero this season as Supergirl.” She also promised “a lot of CatCo” since journalism is “going to be a big part of the season.”
We also have a glimpse at this season’s villain Agent Liberty, who is played by Smallville alum Sam Witwer and will be joining the season as a series regular. His version of Agent Liberty is the founder and figurehead of an organisation known as the Children of Liberty, which is a hate group with a focus on a world with human rights first.
In other big news, Supergirl is making some important TV history. The series has announced transgender activist and actress Nicole Maines will play TV’s first transgender superhero. Her character will join the series as Nia Nal (aka Dreamer), a character described as a “soulful young transgender woman with a fierce drive to protect others” and she will come into the series as a reporter. Her character is a spin on the DC character Nura Nal (aka Dream Girl), who can foresee the deaths of others.
Also joining the cast as a series regular is April Parker-Jones (The Last Ship) as Colonel Haley, a hardline career military woman who lives and dies by the orders of her commanding officers. She may bring some issues to the series as Supergirl and Co. don’t have the best working relationship with military personnel. David Ajala (Jupiter Ascending) will join as recurring character Manchester Black who is the type of guy who brings a knife to a gunfight and still walks away the winner. With a dark past, he easily deflects the brutality of his mission with his charm and sense of humour.
Supergirl Season 4 premieres on its new night, Sunday, Oct. 14 at 8/7c on The CW, followed by the Charmed reboot.
