Much to the surprise of fans, DC debuted the first footage for Wonder Woman: 1984 at San Diego Comic-Con 2018!
Even though filming has only just commenced on the new Wonder Woman film, the DC panel showed fans a very short glimpse of one of the film’s scenes in which Diana Prince (played by Gal Gadot) kicks the asses of some bad guys in a shopping mall, to the excitement of a young child. While not much was revealed about the plot of Wonder Woman 1984, there are rumours that a somehow resurrected Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) will feature, along with the sequel’s villain being Cheetah (played by Kristen Wiig).
In answer to the question of why the movie is set in 1984, Patty Jenkins, the woman behind the initial Wonder Woman and also the first female director of any comic book adaptation, cryptically responded: “I grew up in the ’80s, and this has its own look and feel. The reason I am excited is it showed mankind at its best and worst. It was grand and wonderful, there was great music and there were elegant and beautiful things. But other things about the decade revealed the worst of us. To have Wonder Woman in that period of time that was us at our most extreme, is wonderful.” She also teased that his resurrection is “a very important part of our movie”.
According to Box Office Mojo, the first Wonder Woman, which was released in 2017, was the highest grossing DC film in the ‘new’ Worlds of DC franchise (excluding The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises from the Christopher Nolan trilogy). In particular, the film was praised for the performances of Gadot and Pine with Christopher Orr from The Atlantic saying “Gadot, in particular, is a delight as Diana: supremely capable yet utterly innocent, a big fish who has left her little pond and now finds herself out of water altogether. As her guide to the ways of the masculine world—which consist principally of lying and pointless fighting—Pine’s Steve is equal parts incredulous and enraptured toward Diana.”
The duo certainly have wonderful chemistry, and the scenes in which they are struggling to understand their respective worlds offer the most insightful commentary on modern-day sexism without making the point in an aggressive manner.
Jenkins and Gadot insist that Wonder Woman 1984 isn’t a sequel in the traditional sense; indeed 70 intervening years have changed the world, and presumably that has changed the character of Prince as well. Gadot’s comment was that this film has its “own story” rather than strictly continuing the story of the first film.
Wonder Woman 1984 is expected to be released on November 1, 2019.
