I picked up this book on a random peruse through a local bookstore when The Extraordinaries cover caught my eye. I was looking for something lighthearted and quirky so it grabbed my attention, opened the cover, read the first paragraph, and decided it was perfect. I don’t typically go for YA (as I approach my thirties). When I got home it wasn’t until I started reading, that I realized that not only is this about nerds and superheroes (I’m a closet nerd myself), I was delighted to learn it was also a queer romance as well! Upon finishing this book 20 minutes ago, I can’t help but reflect on how literary works and other forms of art media, could have been so inspiring in my formative years. Even 10 years ago, queer characters were supporting roles as a mere addition to a story line. Work like this, warms my heart to know that queer youth today can find characters with whom they identify with, can be inspired by, and even help them come to terms with their own identity. I am unapologetically hooked on this trilogy, and will be eagerly be waiting for it’s sequels. I also will be paying a visit to the bookstore to be picking up other books by TJ Klune, to be continuously inspired during the wait for the next installment.
