After a one week break since our last episode, our mutants are back with a lot of choices to make and facing exclusion that is reminiscent of our history books and even the current news.
This week’s flashback brings us to Dallas, 12 years ago, where Turner was a rookie cop with a colleague in charge that was not mutant friendly. Back then, before his daughter got killed by a mutant, he was on their side. To see him join the purifiers and even think that they are a part of the solution to get rid of mutants just a couple of minutes later is quite an opposite image. It is not about “that mutants will replace us”, as the leader of the purifiers pointed out. Evolution is a living thing that will never stop, no matter how much a group of people wants it to.
What happened at the ex-mutant underground? They brought the mutants they saved at the mental hospital to the community clinic and Johnny brings Laurel to her parents so that they could check if she does not have a concussion after Andy’s attack. One badly injured mutant can answer some burning questions about the one mutant the Inner Circle took with them. The only problem is, Michael’s skin is like acid, touch him and you get badly burned. This makes it hard to treat him and unfortunately, he couldn’t answer all the questions before he died.
Kate is disappointed that Andy is still not with her and that she lied to Johnny about Michael’s injuries did not help at all in the end.
I can only imagine how helpless Johnny must feel. No matter what he tries to do, it falls apart and he fails. Where is the point in continuing if nothing works out for the better? Dude, to get ahead of the Inner Circle? I know you are desperate, but I think you already know that this is an impossible task.
Meanwhile, Clarice and Marcos are in the tunnels to look for Urg to ask him to take in the saved mutants. Of course, he is not very cooperative at first and demands two things. First, Clarice should help him get some food supplies and Urg confesses that he only “believes in corn flakes”, which means he does not care about anything that is going on, on the surface. All he wants for his people and himself is his peace. Secondly, all refugees have to get the M branded on their right cheek.
So let’s make a short break here. I am all on Urg’s side when it comes to “never hide who you are” and “be proud to be a mutant”, but did not some historical events proofed that to mark people does not help anyone with anything?
Two things happened in the tunnels that might have been overheard. Marcos refers to Lorna as “my kids mum”. Is he starting to distance himself from her? And then we witness the moment when Clarice calls herself Blink for the first time. At least for that you have a little sympathy point, Urg.
And what happened at the Inner Circle HQ? We almost see no one and did not have any kind of big new information, but love is in the air and that is for sure.
While Andy is questioning what he did to his sister, it turns out, that the saved mutant is the key for Reeva’s next step in her plan. So, say hi to Rebecca. She swapped from a mental hospital to the Inner Circle, one wanted to experiment on her, the other one wants to abuse her for their needs.
Instead of giving her time to adjust, they keep pushing her to use her powers in training. Only Andy sees that it would help to bond with her first and get to know her as a person and give her the feeling to be accepted. Under Lorna’s judgy eyes, Andy takes Rebecca to a café in which she describes her powers: to turn things inside out. Nice party trick, but why is it so important for the Inner Circle? After showing what it means on a police car, it starts to make sense and the big safe confirmed it. They want something locked up, to be outside.
You might think that Rebecca would have doubts and that all she wants after being locked up herself to be free and enjoy the sun on her skin, but this girl is adapting her new situation way too fast. And the new power couple is on the fast lane. We might start to look for a shipping name already.
So, one question that popped out the second the episode was over: Where is Dawn? We do not see her, Lorna does not mention her. We can only assume that while we were occupied with Andy and Rebecca that Lorna was with her, but I thought that we would get to see a bit more of her because she is the reason mummy is with the Inner Circle in the first place.
I am already afraid of next week’s episode, because I do not want to see what Turner means with “we hit them where they live”.
Even though I do not agree with Urg’s opinion, this was highlight of this episode. What started me to love the X-Men universe is that they show you our past and present. That we should not label people, we should be proud of ourselves but we do not need a mark to show it. Live and let people live. And most importantly, do not judge people by their looks, by their believes and what they can or cannot do. And do not forget, in the end, there is always a glimpse of hope that one day the world will be a better place.
