The last episode of the second season of The Gifted has aired and we definitely have someone to mourn over, but not the person we expected to. Reed makes the ultimate sacrifice, accepting that he has powers and using them – or more like not having control over them – and leaves the world in hopes for a better future for all people.
In general, this episode felt like a goodbye to Reed from the start. We see the Struckers 5 years ago watching the news about July 15th, the mutant attack which leaves everybody in shock. It shows how Reed has changed from fighting against mutants to sacrificing himself for mutants.
Reeva is not really bothered by Loran and Andy’s so-called-betrayal because there will be another way to succeed and sends the Purifiers to the apartment building to kill them. There our mutants have only 24 hours to stop Reeva’s plan to destroy Sentinel Services and all other government buildings. There are no other stations of the mutant underground to call because there is no one left who is willing to fight. Lorna sees what she helped do and feels responsible for their deaths and is willing to stop Reeva at any cost to make up for it.
Unfortunately, the Frost Sisters kidnapped Lauren and Andy, while the others prepared for leaving the building. So when the others have to go after them, John creates a distraction and putting on his comic-inspired outfit. This makes me so happy to see because after fighting alone against the Purifiers – shout out to Blair Redford for this amazing fight scene – he gets wounded very badly. Erg finds him and offers him help, for Clarice’s sake, and he starts calling himself Thunderbird. A mutant name does not need to be anything bad, right?

The Frost triplets are mind controlling Lauren and Andy and succeed in forcing them to bring down the Sentinel Services HQ. Just minutes afterwards, their friends find them and thanks to Lorna who talks sense into the already doubting Esme, they are able to bring them to safety.

This brings us to the end of Reed’s journey as a mutant. After Lorna says that everything stays and falls with Reeva, Reed goes up into the penthouse to face her alone. She uses her power on him after calling him a complete disappointment to the Von Strucker family and this, as expected, does not force Reed to suppress his powers, but they are even more out of control. His powers take over completely and Reed explodes and takes half of the building with him.

Reeva is defeated and there is new light on the world. While Cate, Lauren, and Andy mourn Reed, Lorna and Marcos are reunited with Dawn/Aurora and Erg and John become friends. Esme seems to have separated herself from her sisters and forces Benedict Ryan to tell the truth to the media about his role in the mutant attacks, and so the Purifiers are no more.
Have faith in family. 💚

What about Turner? Every time I write my hopes for him down, he does the exact opposite in the following episode. It is frustrating! Why does he still acts that way when he clearly sees that it is not the right way to change anything?
The Gifted leaves us with a cliffhanger, which is great and shocking at the same time. John senses Clarice and a couple of seconds later, she jumps through a portal, looking nothing like before and with improved powers.
We see a bit trough the portal and you can see buildings burning, it looks like a big attack took place wherever Clarice came from. So where does this lead us for a potential third season? Can Clarice now jump into the future? Is this a new mutant uprising attack? Or is this in another town where mutants have been inspired to make a move against humans or the other way around?

The show leaves us with no real clues as to what could come next and where our beloved mutants will find themselves, now that no one is after them. It is possible that we will see them form even a new X-Men group. We have a lot of time to think about it and hope that we will see them again in the Fall.
