The Dilemma of Reorganising Bookshelves

Reorganising Your Bookshelves

Written by Mary Beth Mitchell

We’ve all been there. Whether you’ve just gotten new shelves, books, or trinkets to display, it all leads to the inevitable: reorganising your shelves! There are so many different ways to arrange them, and some of you booklovers may find it hard to pick, because really, a bookshelf can be a  work of art and feature in itself!

Read on to discover some our favourite ways to organise your shelves and tell us in the comments below which one your favourite is!
AUTHOR

Are you a “find the book by the author person”? Then this is the way for you. Group all of the books by that author together, but from there what to do? You could arrange them by series, publication date or by order of your most favourite books by that author.

GENRE

Do you look for the genre of a book first? Try it this way! Make it easier to find your next sci-fi, young adult or non-fiction book by arranging your books by genre! You could alphabetise the genres or put your favourite genres on the shelves within easy access. You might also consider how you organise within your genres, but let’s get into that later.

COLOUR

The most aesthetically pleasing method by far, and perfect for those #rainbowshelfies. This is for all my super artsy people out there and this in itself will open up your bookshelves to a myriad of other options. Do you make a rainbow diagonally across your shelves? Vertically? Do you devote a shelf to one colour all on its own? All my #bookstagrammers, this one is for you!

SERIES

I personallydo this with my own shelves a lot. I like to have a shelf devoted just to books that are parts of series and one for stand-alone books. Sometimes I will arrange them by colour for the stand-alone books, or I’ll organise that by author, or genre. All of these can be combined or interchangeable.

Feel free to mix and match all the ways—regardless of which way you decide to organise your personal library, what matters is the books! Can you find the ones you want? Do you like the way it looks? Is it conducive to your collection of bookish goodies?
