In the world of video game entertainment, streaming reigns supreme. Platforms like Twitch host countless entertainers glamouring for attention and ad revenue. Watching others play video games has become a cultural phenomenon. Turner Tenney, better known in gaming circles as Tfue, owned the most followed active Twitch account as of July 2020, with a mind-blowing 7.8 million subscribers.

Streaming, however, is not the alpha and omega of gaming-related entertainment. On YouTube, fans of video games have a long history of creating imaginative and unique content. In the streaming arena, content creators set themselves apart based on the games they stream or the personalities they adopt. YouTube content creators, however, have achieved a delightful diversification and specialisation.

YouTube gamers offer some of the most unique, interesting, and informative takes on gaming-related content. Here are five YouTubers who deserve a lot more subscribers.

5. Larry Bundy Jr. – 385K Subscribers

Larry Bundy Jr, also known as “Guru Larry”, is a well-known entity, particularly among European gamers. He’s popped up on several British gaming television channels in the past, including Rapture TV, XLEAGUE.TV, and Game Network. A former manga-style artist who worked with companies such as Bungie and Rockstar, Bundy now creates several series on his YouTube channel.

The best of these series, by far, is Fact Hunt. The show, by its very nature, deals with obscure, weird, and fascinating gaming facts. The Fact Hunt banner covers a diverse range of topics, including Six celebrities who ruined their own games, Five angry programmers who hated their own games, and Four cases of idiotic censorship of retro games. Bundy has a real knack for digging up little-known facts about gaming history.

The success of Bundy’s YouTube series has even spawned a book, Fact Hunt: Fascinating, Funny and Downright Bizarre Facts about Video Games. Much like his YouTube videos, Bundy’s book digs deep for weird, obscure, and forgotten incidents in gaming history.

In short, Bundy’s channel is a treasure trove of information for any fan of the gaming industry.

Derek Alexander began his YouTube career paying homage to James Rolfe’s work. Rolfe, of course, created the “Angry Video Game Nerd” character, whose profanity-laden reviews of retro games have made him one of the most successful YouTubers of all time.

Alexander started his YouTube career as the Happy Video Game Nerd, reviewing games in a style that mimicked AVGN while shifting the tone from outrage to joy. In 2015, Alexander began collaborating with filmographer, writer, and producer Grace Kramer and renamed the channel Stop Skeletons from Fighting.

The overarching theme of Alexander’s work is still “the joy of gaming”, but the style and quality of content has changed radically. Freed from the constraints of trying to imitate AVGN, Alexander and Kramer have created an exuberant examination of video games.

Although SSFF has created several series, the best, by a country mile, is Punching Weight. Alexander describes the series as “a celebration of the weird, ambitious, and unnecessary” and it delivers in spades. Topics range from Ambitious Game Boy Color Ports to Randomly Generated N64 Games. With a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye, Alexander explores games that were ahead of their time or bit off more than they could realistically chew.

Punching Weight is simply a fun series, made all the more special thanks to Alexander’s unapologetic love for all things video games.

3. Game Sack – 248K Subscribers

Game Sack is such a blast of fun. The show began in 2011 with hosts Joe Redifer and Dave White. Recently, White left the show and Redifer decided to continue on solo. Although the interaction between the two hosts is sorely missed, Game Sack continues to create high-quality content.

Game Sack is all about presenting the breadth of video games. Episodes usually last 30 to 40 minutes and create a fast-moving overview of games that fit into a particular category. In essence, most episodes are a string of mini-reviews. It’s a blast of content that allows viewers to fully explore a particular gaming niche.

Game Sack includes console and gaming series overviews, but its absolute best content is focused in two series: Left in Arcades and Left in Japan. Left in Arcades focuses on video games released in arcades that were never ported to home consoles. Left in Japan, on the other hand, focuses on Japanese video games that were never localised in the west.

Both of these series allow gamers without extensive arcade experience or extensive collections of imported games to explore some of the very best, and worst, those gaming experiences have to offer. Redifer’s delivery is detail-oriented, yet filled with humour.

With less than 250,000 subscribers, Game Sack is an often-overlooked gem of a show.

2. SNES Drunk – 174K Subscribers

Whereas each Game Sack episode presents a variety of games, SNES Drunk keeps it short and sweet. SNES Drunk is the brainchild of Alex, a mid-30s gamer from Minnesota who attempts to answer a simple question: is a particular retro video game still worth playing today?

Although SNES Drunk features some list-based content about rom hacks or forgotten games, the bulk of content focuses on short reviews that explore the modern playability of retro games. Reviews are usually three to five minutes in length and are perfect little sips of content in between activities.

Modern gamers who are curious about exploring retro games through services like Nintendo Switch Online or the various mini-consoles released in recent years can rely on SNES Drunk to provide succinct evaluations of retro games and how they mesh with modern sensibilities.

1. Jeremy Parish – 53.5K Subscribers

In the world of games journalism, Jeremy Parish has certainly been around the block a time or two. He’s been an editor at 1UP.com, IGN, and USGamer, and currently works as a media curator for Limited Run Games. He also creates a podcast, Retronauts, and regularly publishes content on YouTube. Although he did not coin the term, Parish famously played a role in popularising the term “metroidvania”.

The crown jewel of Parish’s YouTube content is, without a doubt, his Works series. Here, Parish attempts to chronicle the entire output of games for a particular console in order of release. Some videos focus on a singular game, while others combine an overview of two or three games into a single video.

What works best about Parish’s videos is that he brings his experience as a gaming journalist to his video projects. His content is meticulously researched; he always makes an effort to place a particular game into its historical context. His delivery is authentic and authoritative. There have even been several spin-off books of the Works series, which each chronicle a single year’s releases for a particular console.

The biggest drawback of Parish’s project here is that it is simply too big. Given the sheer number of video games released, and the fact that he has begun separate series focused on the NES, the Game Boy, the SNES and the N64, it is highly unlikely that Parish will ever actually manage to achieve completion.

The journey, however, is definitely worth it, even if the destination seems out of reach. The fact that Parish barely has over 50,000 subscribers is a crying shame.

YouTube is a huge part of the modern life where one might use it to watch music videos, movie trailers, or even videos by content creators from across the world. While many of them may seem all fun and games, there are also channels that could help you ace that test or give more information on weird and wonderful stuff. Today we have compiled six channels that we highly recommend you check out!

If you need to ace that exam: Crash Course

It can be pretty hard to pay attention in school; you always seem too tired, the class started too early, and there are just other things that grab your interest more than the subjects. We can count many times where it’s near exam time, but we barely understand anything and the panic starts to set in. Worry not because true to its name, Crash Course provides crash courses for school subjects.

From common subjects such as biology and engineering, to even move history. The videos discuss the subjects per chapter, so if you are only confused about a certain parts of the subject, you can head directly to a certain video instead of having to sit through an hour-long one. Each video is around 12 minutes featuring catchy music, fun animations, and of course, an upbeat host. I mean, if Hank Green is teaching you biology, how could you be bored?

If you want to know more about science and eventual fate of the world: Kurzgesagt

What is a wormhole? What would happen if you detonate a nuclear bomb in the Mariana’s trench? Do robots deserve rights?

If you like science fiction, Kurzgesagt would be a great fit for you. This channel makes science look beautiful with its vibrant and cute animations, as well as concise explanations. Not only that, most of the topics discussed here is what science fiction is made of: robots, aliens, black holes, ageing, and more.

If you are going to college and would like to know more about the college life: Crimson Education

Crimson Education channel provides an insight for college life and career pathways, that could help you in making decisions and prepare you for that part of your life. Their series, A Day In the Life, is one of their most famous videos as it follows the life of college students from different majors and universities. From the most coveted one such as Harvard medical student, to international ones like Hokkaido University and Seoul National University. Not only giving insight, they also provide consultations for scholarships and college applications.

If you like to educate yourself more on different topics: TED-ED

Why some birds can fly while others don’t? Is the legend of King Arthur real? Why don’t poisonous animals poison themselves? What is the Cambodian myth of rain?

The world is so full of wonders and questions, and some of them are not so easy to answer. Ted-ED is one of the most popular educational channel because they give informative answers with beautiful animation from various contributors. The videos encompass a wide variety of fields, from science, history, to cultures. Each videos are not long either, only 3-5 minutes which make them perfect even if you don’t have the time.

If you like to listen to inspiring people from different perspective: TED

Arguably one of YouTube’s most famous channel, TED creates conferences all around the world where the speakers are individuals and communities that have ideas worth sharing. They then shares the speakers’ session on their YouTube video, where you could listen to their ideas and get inspired too. Their videos are around 15-20 minutes and an inspiring way to start your day.

If you want to dive into pop culture conspiracy theory: supercarlinbrothers

Months later, Infinity War still drives Marvel fans and casual movie goes alike crazy on how it will impact the Avengers 4 movie. There are tons of theories out there, some crazy and others make perfect sense. SuperCarlinBrothers is one of the many accounts that discuss these theories, but what I love about them is how they deliver it. They give a background story, the theory, and what they think about it. Not a Marvel person? This channel also discussed other fan theories from other fandoms, such as Harry Potter, Pixar, and Star Wars.

[Credit: Katja Kuhl / Left Bank Pictures | YouTube Premium © 2018]

German-born actor Philipp Christopher is set to star alongside Harry Potter alums Tom Felton and Natalia Tena in YouTube’ new original sci-fi thriller series, Origin.

The 10-episode series, from director Paul W.S. Anderson and the producers of The Crown and Outlander, follows a group of outsiders who find themselves abandoned on a ship bound for a distant land. Now they must work together for survival, but quickly realise that one of them is far from who they claim to be…

We had the pleasure of talking to Philipp Christopher about the new series!

Origin is a new YouTube original series—what can viewers expect?

A show with a diverse cast, unique characters and filled with twists and turns. It’s dark, it’s a bit bloody…but most of all viewers will have a hell of a good time.

The new series certainly gives viewers a few scares! Do you feel this blend of sci-fi and horror will propel viewers to keep watching?

I certainly think it’s a good mix as it brings two genres together. In the end, it’s about the story and the characters. I’m so attached to the project so it’s difficult for me to be objective but I’m pretty sure I’d dig it and binge watch this thing within a few days.

So, your character causes quite the drama in the first episode. What drew you to the role of Baum?

I tend to fall for characters that are very unlikeable in the beginning but start to get to you once they reveal their true self. Baum in no different. He has a hard and rather despicable shell but of course it’s all out of protection. He is scared to get emotionally attached to anything because he’s been hurt before. All and more we find out in his flashback. He’s a tragic figure, the outsider. Who wouldn’t fall for that guy.

Straight away Origin shows its diversity with its international cast—what was it like working with such a diverse range of actors?

Just splendid. I did pick up a few great British words such as “bonkers” and I was able to teach Tom a few German words. He’s pretty bad at it, to be honest. But seriously…it’s one of the things that makes the show so unique. The international episodes were shot in their original language and viewers will watch them with subtitles. That’s pretty ballsy, if you ask me.

Were there any highlights for you while filming?

I think working with Tom because it was just pure pleasure. The man is such a giving and professional actor and our storyline was just a blast to work on. Hindsight we joke about how we were very cautious about each other in the beginning but pretty soon it was nothing but love.

Is there a certain scene or episode that you found the most enjoyable, or perhaps even challenging?

I think the shower scene in episode 2 was pretty challenging. It was the first scene I shot for the show and I had to wear what’s called a cock-sock. It wasn’t my first time to do so, but my first time on a spaceship.

BAUM (Phillip Christopher) [Left Bank Pictures | YouTube Premium © 2018]

You’ve done some ‘behind the camera’ work yourself, do you find you are intrigued by what’s going on when filming?

I actually went to film school and my major was directing. I love filmmaking just as much as acting. Being part of the process makes one appreciate this art form so much more. As an actor however I try to turn that part of my brain off because I can become very critical. We were in good hand on this show though so that part of my brain never turned on.

We saw you posted a sweet photo on Instagram of you and your family dressed in Star Wars costumes! Are you a bit of a sci-fi fan yourself?

I absolutely am. Although I have to admit that my Star Wars Fandom hasn’t really gone beyond the original trilogy. And I would throw in Rogue One. Other than that I do love all sci-fi that has a cool look and atmosphere. I am, however, the only one in the family thus far.

What’s next for you?

I had some gigs in Germany and now started working on a play. I miss the stage. After that I’ll have a little convo with the universe…see what’s in store for me.

Lastly, do you have any words of wisdom for those trying to break into the industry?

Someone out there is looking for YOU exactly. Always keep your eyes open.

The new series is essentially a mash-up of Lost, Alien, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and somehow the series has nabbed Harry Potter alums Natalia Tena and Tom Felton. But anyway, in Origin, a chilling new original series, we meet a group of troubled passengers as they wake up on a damaged spaceship abandoned in deep space. Each having left behind a dark past in search of a fresh start on a newly colonised planet, they’re desperate to survive at all costs. But as their terrifying situation spirals into paranoia, they come to realise that the greatest threat to their dream of starting over – and indeed their lives – might actually be within their midst…

As for the structure of the series, around 60% of an episode will take place on the Origin, a ship built by the Siren corporation who transport colonists to a distant and habitable planet called Thea. While the other 40% will consist of a series of flashbacks to the colonists’ previous lives on Earth and explore as to why they left in order to take this perilous journey into the unknown.

The series stars Tom Felton, Natalia Tena, Sen Mitsuji, Nora Arnezeder, Fraser James, Philipp Christopher, Nina Wadia, Madalyn Horcher, Siobahn Cullen, Adelayo Adedayo and Wil Coban. The series is created and written by Mika Watkins, and is directed by Paul W.S. Anderson. It comes from the producers of The Crown and Outlander and will run for 10 episodes.

Origin premieres November 14th on YouTube Premium. Find out more about YouTube Premium subscriptions here and you can also get a free one month trial.

The series is inspired by the novel written by Steven Gould and the movie Jumper from 2008, which starred Hayden Christensen in the leading role. In July, it was announced that Impulse had been renewed for a second season, which will premiere in 2019. Since I enjoyed the movie, this was all I needed to give the web series a chance to see what it was […]

In June 2018, YouTube Premium released 10 episodes of their new science fiction drama series, Impulse. The series is inspired by the novel written by Steven Gould and the movie Jumper from 2008, which starred Hayden Christensen in the leading role. In July, it was announced that Impulse had been renewed for a second season, which will premiere in 2019. Since I enjoyed the movie, this was all I needed to give the web series a chance to see what it was all about.

Impulse follows 16-year-old Henrietta, or Henry for short, who has been forced to move around a lot because of her mother’s love interests and restlessness. They currently live in Reston with Thomas and his daughter Jenna where Henry ties to keep a low profile. Henry takes pills which are meant to help with her seizures, but she feels like a prisoner because of her sickness and finds her freedom at night where she heads out to spray paint. However, after a sexual assault on her, she finds her seizures turn out to be an ability to teleport. During her first teleportation, she accidentally injures the boy and he ends up as a paraplegic in a wheelchair. The series then continues on with Henry trying to forget what almost happened to her and discovering the source of her new ability.

The Characters

Henrietta Coles (Maddie Hasson) and her mother Cleo (Missi Pyle) move every 6 months to another town. After her husband and Henry’s father disappeared, she cannot find a place to feel home and does not have any luck with her boyfriends. Another reason for the constant moving are Henry’s seizures. Henry is introverted and expresses herself through her art. Why find friends if you probably will be gone in a couple of weeks? After being assaulted by Clay, a fellow student, she discovers that she is able to teleport. When she feels stressed, she teleports herself to her bedroom, which her subconsciousness relates to a safe haven. While being in a relaxed state or being asleep, she teleports and has no control over it. After a bigger seizure and ending up in a coma, Henry starts to remember details about her father’s disappearance.

Clay Boone (Tanner Stine) is the star of Reston High and the captain of the basketball team. Due of his father’s power in the city as he owns the majority of the town and owning a car business, he thinks he can do everything and does not have to deal with possible consequences. Henry turns to him for help after her mother sold her car. Afterwards, he tries to rape her which triggered her first jump and makes him paraplegic. Over the course of the series, he realises that all his fame slowly goes away because he cannot be the sportsman he always was.

Jenna Hope (Sarah Desjardins) is Henry’s future step-sister. The girls do not get along for a while and Jenna tries her best to at least be friendly to Henry while driving her to school in her car. After her first jump, Jenna is the first person she sees and Henry admits what Clay almost did and that she teleported. While exploring her first interest in a real relationship and still dealing with losing her mother to Alzheimer’s, Jenna helps Henry cope with everything the best she can. It does come in handy that she is a science genius, but seems to be ashamed of it.

Townes Linderman (Daniel Maslany) shares a class with Henry and is the first to witness her powers before she even made her first jump because she moved his pencils, which leads him to the result of Henry using telekinesis. He is in the same science team as Jenna and because of his autism he has an eye for details, which comes in handy. After befriending the two girls, Townes is very loyal and defends them while always being polit.

One would think that the jumps would be the focus of the series. Well, you are wrong.

Instead it focuses on the catalyst of the all the drama and how it affects everyone. Henry suffers from PTSD and except Jenna no one knows about it until the end of this season. On the other hand, Clay cannot remember what exactly has happened to him and when Henry confronts him, he denies it. Through Clay, the meaning of ‘no’ is once more explained and it seems that he understood that what he did was in fact very wrong. Then we have Bill Boone (David James Elliott), father of Clay and his older brother Lucas Boone (Craig Arnold), who owns a car selling business, which he uses also for secret drug deals. Bill accuses one of his business partners to be behind his son’s accident that he threatens Henry to tell who it was. Little did she know that Bill would send Lucas to this person for taking revenge. When Amos, the son of his business partner Jeremiah Miller (Shawn Doyle), was found dead, the butterfly effect is unstoppable. The person who connects those two storylines is Deputy Anna Hulce (Enuka Okuma) who is new in town and determined to get behind those crimes.

The story also explores Jumpers who have been captured or killed. One of them is Dominick (Keon Alexander) and the organisation which is hunting him thinks that his ability could be genetic and they want to make tests on his son. Unfortunately this storyline is not further explored and the audience has to wait for answers.

Impulse feels dark and the story is slowly moving forward, which gives the show the space to explore the triggers of teleportation and gives the audience the possibility to understand them better in the next season. I was looking forward to see the main character explore her abilities more eagerly and maybe have a bit of fun with her little group of insiders.

To me, it also seems that may have also been too much happening at once. There were some plot holes causing confusion, which are eventually explained at a later point. However, I would like to know why Henry sometimes destroys everything around her during a jump and sometimes not. At the beginning of every episode, there is a warning of possible triggers and after every episode the audience is made aware of RAINN, a helpline for victims of sexual abuse.

Impulse for sure is worth a try because of its versatility. My hopes for season 2, besides to get to know about more about the Jumper’s, is to see more of Townes and his friendship with Jenna and Henry, as well as exploring Lucas’ character more. On the one hand, he has no problem with violence, but on the other he cannot stand it, suffers, and feels lost in the shadows of his father.

Have we piqued your interest?

Before you start binge watching, you have to subscribe to YouTube Premium to be able to watch the entire season. A couple of years ago, YouTube started their own movie and series streaming platform called YouTube Red, which is now known as YouTube Premium and includes YouTube without the ads, YouTube Music, and access to all YouTube Original movies and series.

The first three episodes are free to watch without the need to subscribe. If you wish to continue watching, you have to sign up to a one month trial. If you do not unsubscribe, a monthly fee is charged to your Google Pay or credit card. You then will be able watch your shows offline and you can download them and watch on any device of your choice.

YouTube debuted the trailer for Origin, an original space thriller series, at San Diego Comic Con 2018 and it has some unexpected actors…

After the panel at San Diego Comic-Con, attendees were treated to the first 12 minutes of the episode. During the extended sneak peek, fans received a glimpse and flashback of Sen Mitsuji as his character who is a Japanese gangster in a futuristic Tokyo alongside his estranged brother who is a different line of work. The flashback then shows how he caused his brother’s death, and perhaps that will lead to some issues for him in space, which there was also a brief glimpse of!

The series stars Tom Felton, Natalia Tena, Sen Mitsuji, Nora Arnezeder, Fraser James, Philipp Christopher, Nina Wadia, Madalyn Horcher, Siobahn Cullen, Adelayo Adedayo and Wil Coban. The series is created and written by Mika Watkins, and is directed byPaul W.S. Anderson. It comes from the producers of The Crown and Outlander and will run for 10 episodes.

The new series will be available on YouTube Premium (formally YouTube Red) later this year, so maybe save your dollars for a subscription if you think it’s worth it?

Well The Karate Kid fans, Daniel and Johnny are about to face off once again thanks to a new series coming to YouTube Red.

In the highly-anticipated return of two iconic characters, the arch-rivals from the legendary Karate Kid film series reunite over 30 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament. Their lives inevitably become intertwined and the rivalry is reignited, setting forth the next generation of “karate kids”.

Cobra Kai features ten half-hour episodes and it is produced by Overbrook Entertainment in association with Sony Pictures Television.

Starring The Karate Kid alums Ralph Macchio and William Zabka, along with Xolo Maridueña (Parenthood), Tanner Buchanan (Designated Survivor), Courtney Henggeler (Mom), and Mary Mouser (Body of Proof).
