This has such a phenomenal premise—a Dark Academia fantasy murder mystery anthology set in a school of magic? Sign me up immediately! I just fell in love with the idea of an interlocking fantasy and murder mystery anthology, making such a unique collection of stories. The way this collection is set out is also really interesting, placing characters against the clock to discover the truth of what happened.

The Galileo Academy is a magical campus that has recently changed its focus to be more inclusive and reflective of its contemporary reality. Septimus Dropwork, a professor and embodiment of many forms of hatred, did not welcome this and when he turns up dead, there are plenty of suspects to follow. That interplay of inclusion, diversity and the respective discussions around it (often nonsensical and bigoted) mixed with the murder mystery thread is endlessly fascinating.

It is also really important to highlight the sheer amount of diversity in this collection. As always, seeing more of this and more normalised representation is incredible. Diversity should be the standard, rather than the exception. Just seeing so much BIPOC, disability, queer, and mental health representation brings light to my heart. The running thread throughout these stories is facing and sometimes overcoming adversity with the hatred and bigotry faced being truly sickening. You get a sense of a rotten heart at the centre of this institution, which is only exposed more as the collection continues.

We get all of these differing voices, all of whom have at least a glimmer of what happened or a seed of a potential motivation. It is also really interesting how the expansive setting of a school celebrating many forms of magic allowed for each writer to put their own stamp on a magic system and sprawling setting. In addition to this, I thoroughly enjoyed getting to spend time with all of these incredible characters, particularly as they started to interweave. They all really burst off the page and were three-dimensional. The way the authors managed to condense these complex, interesting and sometimes challenging character arcs and twists into such a short form is nothing but commendable.

While all the stories were brilliant, some did shine a little more for me. In particular, 2: A.M.: Wren Willemson by Marieke Nijkamp; 5:00 A.M.: Taya Winter by Darcie Little Badger; 9:00 A.M: Irene Seaver by Kayla Whaley; 5:00 P.M.: Jamie Ellison by Victoria Lee; and 8:00 P.M.: Lupita Augratricis by Natasha Díaz all snuck into my heart and really remained in my head after finishing the book. However, every section had such distinctive character voices and covered a lot of material in a very short space. These are stories that cover a lot of ground, giving you time with their respective protagonist, while also moving the machinations of the over-arching plot along. In that sense, every story is an awe-inspiring piece of art and an intriguing piece of the puzzle. There was no story that did not totally captivate me. I sped through this collection, wanting to race the clock like the characters. The pacing and tension was very high and I just needed to know who and whydunnit.

The best summary of this book is that it is a collection of amazing stories: princesses warring in space, the devastation of climate-change, haunting ghost stories in Argentina, and mermaids off of the coast of the Caribbean. When you break down the borders and barriers of these fantastical and science filled realms, you’ll find that stories are truly universal.

I don’t know how it’s possible, but each and every story in this anthology had a warmth to it that I can’t possibly put into proper words. Maybe it’s because I identified with each character, or something resonated within me to the point that I loved every story…but there’s no doubt that people will fall in love with these stories as I did. For this review, I will focus on the stories that I loved the most. The first of these stories was The First Day of Us by David Bowles. It’s undoubtedly romantic, with a novio, novia, and novie. I was hooked by the confidence of the narrator, and the space world they were in. It genuinely felt like it could have been expanded into a full story. Many of these tales felt the same way to me.

This is Our Manifesto is a story full of grit and of teenage rebels who refuse to back down in the face of people who would put them down. This story is poetic and full of righteous anger that will fill readers with the fury of the children who refused to let their voices die. Who plotted their freedom after they were imprisoned. It’s incredible, and such an elaborate world is built in only a few pages. I LOVED the ending.

Immediately following this story I fell right into Circe Moskowitz’s Creatures of Kings. It’s a story of a mother and daughter that death won’t take, and about what it takes to become a king. It’s powerful and if death is triggering for you, approach this with caution. It’s a story that’s very honest and blew me away.

Moonglow by Sara Faring is fraught with growing and needling tension. It builds into a phenomenal ending that will leave readers shivering. This could be the beginning to a historical horror film, and it would be one that I’d watch with the lights on. At the same time, the love of a mother shines through and through.

Tame the Wicked Night by Zoraida Cordova is the longest of the tales in this anthology, and is a gorgeous finale to the whole anthology. It’s a story full of tension and romance, where a young man seeking the love of his life is challenged to bring back something that is sure to cause his death, but in the darkness finds so much more. It’s so imaginative and lovely, and the ending is perfect for the way the story unfolds.

With the tales in this anthology being so short, I am deliberately vague to avoid spoilers. However, I urge everyone to pick up a copy of this book. For the sake of brevity I picked the tales that I loved the most, but I could spend pages upon pages telling you the delights of each and every story in this book. Each author brings in a unique perspective on life, whether it’s reimagining what the world looks like in the not so distant future, or the fantasy lands that tantalise, delight, and beguile readers to return time and again.

This anthology is a 10/10 for me. Add it to your reading list, and if you find a favourite story, make sure to pick up the author’s other book(s). You never know when you’ll find a new favourite story.

Game On is filled with fifteen stories by star-studded contributors: Gloria Chao, Sona Charaipotra, Kika Hatzopoulou, Katie Cotugno, Isaac Fitzsimons, Kathleen Glasgow, Shaun David Hutchinson, Kim Jones & Gilly Segal, Amanda Joy, Yamile Saied Méndez, Anna Meriano, Nina Moreno, Laura Silverman, Kayla Whaley and Francesca Zappia. And it’s of course the magic of anthologies that they bring you stories from your favourite authors while also introducing you to new voices you might not have heard about before. Need an example? I’d been itching to get my hands on this book because of well-known names like Francesca Zappia (and that story did not disappoint), yet after finishing all fifteen stories, I had an entire cart full of books to order at my local indie bookshop because I discovered authors like Sona Charaipotra and Anna Meriano I hadn’t heard much from before but now couldn’t wait to read more from.

What I absolutely adored about this collection is how diverse and inclusive it was. It might not seem like much to others, but for me to pick up an anthology (and believe me, I’ve read quite a lot this year) that’s not marketed directly as a queer anthology and yet for more than half of the stories to star LGBTQIAP+ characters? Chef’s kiss right there. On top of that, the characters came from a variety of different backgrounds, races and religions and I loved how, even if that wasn’t always the focus, it coloured the stories with so much authenticity and diversity.

Now, my reading experience turned out to be quite a nostalgic journey. Obviously, this book is about games and competition, about winning and losing and everything that comes with being on the right team—or the wrong one. I loved how, beyond the actual games in these stories—whether it’s Spin the Bottle, Settlers of Catan, or a fun scavenger hunt—there was always the sense of community that comes with playing games. Whether you’ve ever been part of a sports team or ever lost epically during an online gaming session, there’s usually that sense of camaraderie, which is the beauty of playing games. Games and competitions can bring people together in so many ways. And in the end, it’s not so much about winning or losing, it’s about who you’re winning or losing with. There’s also this theme of competition bringing out the best and worst in people and some stories in here discussed this so beautifully. While I obviously won’t talk about any of the stories in detail, I do want to mention one in particular.

One of the short stories follows a group playing a game called Werewolf. That story was such a throwback for me because it made me miss those summer days where my friends and I would get together after school and sit in the garden, eyes closed, waiting to be assigned “our roles” as a werewolf hunted us down, one by one. Truth be told, I hadn’t thought of that game in nearly a decade and that story just threw me back in time completely. That’s short stories at their best, in my opinion. When authors manage to momentarily transport you to this other place and remind you of the things you love(d). I hope that if you pick this up, there will be such a moment for you as well. Whether it’s in the short story that has two people falling for each other during a puzzle-filled scavenger hunt on campus, the one that finds a group of friends playing card games up on the roof during those lovely summer nights or even the one where two teams battle it out for Team Retro or Team Modern at an amusement park.

Game On is a love letter to games and competition. Whether you’re a fan of sports, board or video games, chances are there is at least one story in Game On will bring out your inner champion. With inclusive narratives and diverse characters, this anthology is a fun addition to any bookshelf!
