Filled with roses, chocolates, and love letters, February 14th is a celebration of connection, and what better way to add to the joy of the day than with some bookish love? Below you’ll find four bookish date ideas to help you capture the magic of the day! They’re fun for Palentine’s/Galentine’s, too, or you can embark on these adventures solo. You never know who you’ll meet along the way…

1. Annotating Your Favourite Scene(s) from Your Favourite Book

Annotating your favourite scene from one of your favourite books might just be even more romantic than a letter. It offers a chance to re-explore one of your favourite stories to share it with someone you love. Highlight why you connect with the characters, what makes you laugh, what makes you feel seen…the list is endless! Spread out some pens and sticky notes, take your seats, and dive in. Once you’ve finished annotating, swap to read each other’s choices!

2. Bakery & Bookstore Crawl

For my fellow sweet-toothed friends, a bakery-and-bookstore crawl is the perfect way to try delicious treats while exploring new (or old) bookstores. I’ve found that many bookstores are serendipitously located near the tastiest bakeries. For a sweet memento, pick out a book for each other as you browse the bookshelves.

Tip: Keep an eye out for any Valentine’s Day-themed events your local bookstores might be hosting!

3. Crafting or Puzzling while Sharing an Audiobook

Crafting or puzzling while listening to audiobooks (either out loud or with shared earbuds) is always a delightful choice, combining forced proximity with the excitement of working towards a finished product and the transportive experience of listening to an audiobook.

Some of my favourite crafts include shaping bowls or figurines out of clay, building book nook kits (especially the ones from Anavrin), and painting or drawing. To add to the fun, set a 5 to 10-minute timer and switch paintings/drawings until you have a finished piece! For creative and immersive puzzles, check out Piecework Puzzles.

If you’re looking for audiobook recommendations, here are some of my favourites with swoon-worthy love stories:

Oh, and if you’re looking for a book with platonic love, Serra Swift’s cosy fantasy debut, Kill the Beast, is a must-read!

4. Book-to-Screen Club

This date requires a bit of preparation before the big day, as you’ll want to read your selected book beforehand, but it adds to the anticipation. Together, you’ll answer the age-old question: Was the book or film better? You’ll have lots to discuss!

Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen, Heated Rivalry by Rachel Reid, People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry, and Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston are some novels that have been adapted for the screen.

Tip: Before you start watching, make a snack or dish inspired by the book to enhance the cinematic experience. If you pick Red, White & Royal Blue, Henry and Alex would certainly approve of falafel, Jaffa Cakes, and pork tamales with salsa verde.

Happy (almost) Valentine’s Day!

Article contributed by Stacey Lannigan

Love is in the air everywhere you look around, and it can be on your TV or laptop screen too! Whether you’re in a relationship or not, why not settle down this Valentine’s Day and work your way through watching a movie, and we have a few recommendations for you!

Waiting For Forever

How long would you wait for love? When Emma (Rachel Bilson) comes home to visit her terminally ill father, she is reunited with her childhood friend, Will (Tom Sturridge). While Emma has grown and matured, Will has kept his childlike and eccentric personality, and it seems as though the two had never parted ways until Will admits that he has been following Emma for years. When Emma demands that Will stop, he leaves town before being framed for the murder of Emma’s lover and arrested. Waiting For Forever is, as the title suggests, the story of waiting for that right moment and the right person that gives you not only a reason to love but a reason to live.

The First Wives Club

The First Wives Club tells the story of three friends who reunite after the suicide of their old college friend. Despite their attempts to feign that they each live perfect lives, Annie (Diane Keaton), Brenda (Bette Midler), and Elise (Goldie Hawn) each reveal that they are divorced and their husbands have all left them for younger women. The trio then join forces in order to get revenge on their ex-husbands and form what becomes known as ‘The First Wives Club’ in dedication to their friend with the aim of helping women who suffer abuse at the hands of their partners. This movie is the ultimate display of women power and that ‘old’ age truly shouldn’t matter when it comes to love.

Shirley Valentine

Just like time, love changes us and sometimes it doesn’t seem like it was for the better. Sometimes falling in love with someone means falling out of touch with your true self and Shirley Valentine is a movie that explores that in full swing. Tired of her mundane life as a housewife in a relationship that has lost its spark and reminiscent of her more youthful days, Shirley (Pauline Collins) escapes to Greece where she finds comfort in her new lifestyle and in herself. The movie is one of self-discovery and being true to who you are, exploring Shirley’s past and present as she defies all expectation and learns to live life as she likes.

Something Borrowed

It’s one thing for your dream man to be in a relationship already, it’s another for him to be about to marry your best friend. For Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin) this nightmare is her reality in Something Borrowed, directed by Luke Greenfield. The movie does well in portraying Rachel’s relationship with her best friend, Darcy (Kate Hudson), and how the difference in their personalities affects their friendship and feelings, particularly when it comes to Darcy’s outgoing nature in comparison to Rachel’s introverted personality. Is the power of friendship strong enough to withstand the desire that love brings, or is true love a bond strong to tear this friendship apart?

How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days

An expert writer of the “How-To” section of a popular women’s magazine, Andie Anderson (Kate Hudson) wants nothing more than to write about the subjects that matter. Following her best friend’s break up from her partner, Andie plans to write an article stating all the things women do that make men want to put an end to relationships, all the while carrying out the experiment in her own life! Unfortunately for her, the man she chooses just so happens to be attempting to prove that he can make any woman fall head over heels for him. What happens when one party in a relationship is determined to have the other end it when they’re intent on keeping you both together? And is love strong enough to overcome the truth? Why not give How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days a watch to find out?

Love Actually

We can hear it now: “But Love Actually is more a Christmas film!” and while that may be true given the time in which the events in the movie take place, it is ultimately a film about love and so what better time to watch it that Valentine’s Day? Love Actually covers a wide range of the different types of love stories out there, from a lost love, finding love, moving on, unrequited love, and even unfaithful love. The amazing collection of actors and actresses in this movie show their talent in bringing these characters to life on screen that you’ll no doubt find yourself getting teary-eyed and rooting for your favourite couples. What else could you ask for in a romance movie?

The Yellow Handkerchief

Having been imprisoned for six years, Brett Hanson (William Hurt) sets off in search of his ex-wife in an attempt to rekindle their relationship. His search for his lost love causes him to cross paths with a younger couple, Martine (Kristen Stewart) and Gordy (Eddie Redmayne). The road-trip that the trio embarks on a journey to unite Brett with his ex-wife is a journey of self-discovery and the struggle of relationships. Whilst it may not be your average rose-tinted love story, the realism that The Yellow Handkerchief portrays in the characters’ stories show just how powerful love is and how far people would be willing to go for those they did love.

Leap Year

We all know how the story goes: boy meets girl, they fall in love, and then one day he gets down on one knee to propose… Right? Wrong. Based on an old Irish tradition in which women are allowed to propose to them on leap day, this movie puts an interesting twist on your typical ‘romance’ film. When Anna Brady (Amy Adams) travels to Dublin in order to propose to her boyfriend, fate seems to want nothing more than to stop her. However, sometimes fate works in mysterious ways and Mr Right isn’t always the man you expect. Leap Year is a movie all about female empowerment and what it means to fall in love and the changes love can make to us as individuals. For that reason alone, it is most definitely a must-watch this Valentine’s Day.

Love, Simon

The movie adaptation of the 2015 book Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli, Love, Simon is a romantic movie topped with comedy. The movie tells the story of high school student, Simon (Nick Robinson) who is yet to come out as gay as he struggles with the everyday drama of high school, family, friends, and life, in general, all the while being blackmailed and slowly falling for someone he doesn’t even know the identity of. This movie portrays all too real issues, such as life as the trials of teenage life, the importance of friendship and more so the importance of being yourself. On top of that, the movie has an almost fairytale, Cinderella story type flourish to it, making it one of the perfect films to watch this Valentine’s Day.

Love, Simon: Everyone and their mother needs to watch this movie about closeted gay teen Simon who falls in love over email (hello, You’ve Got Mail) and is succinctly blackmailed to keep that fact under wraps. This is the queer romantic comedy we need and deserve. Nick Robinson captures the trifles of first love and teenage awkwardness perfectly and will solidify your faith in love finding its way.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before: Love always seems wonderful and perfect in movies, right? But in reality, it can be scary to open up to someone, to let them see the real you. Lara Jean Song, the protagonist of this beautiful Netflix adaptation of Jenny Han’s novel, has the same concerns. Fall in love with her journey of first love, first heartbreak, and epic love letters (and stay tuned for the sequel like the rest of us lovelorns).

Step Up: Okay, it was a hard day for all of us when Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan-Tatum announced their separation, but we’ll always have the movie on which set they fell in love with each other. Follow young Tyler, a boy from the wrong side of the tracks, as he gets into trouble and ends up helping out a beautiful dancer in achieving her dreams – and maybe, just maybe finding his own calling as a bonus.

Crazy Rich Asians: Boy loves girl. Girl loves boy. Boy’s mother meddles in the relationship because she doesn’t think girl is good enough for boy. Sounds like an easy concept, right? Now mix in an amazingly diverse cast and an unforgettable setting and you’ve got yourself the romantic comedy of the year.

Broken-hearted and Wallowing In Self-Pity

Your heart is broken and your faith in true love needs to be restored? You’ve watched all the Nicholas Sparks movies on a loop (been there, my friend) and still, you need another sign from the universe that people are meant to be together. Also, you just want to bawl your eyes out, but in a cathartic way? Say no more:

Me Before You: A young, energetic, and optimistic woman becomes the caretaker of a sullen, depressed man who has to accept his new life after a horrendous accident. I don’t know what more to tell you. You know where this is going. It’s going to end in heartbreak. And tears. Loads of them.

The Pursuit of Happyness: Okay, I can’t be objective about this. I’ve seen this movie once in my life. When I was a young gal, full of notions of romantic love and big dreams for the future. To this day I can’t bring myself to watch it again because it was too emotional and hit too close to home. So, tread lightly, and at your own risk, and with loads of tissue boxes. Yes. entire boxes. And watch Will Smith pursue his happiness…and maybe even get it. Or not. No spoilers here. Except for the crying thing. You will dissolve in tears. But cathartic ones.

Sweet Home Alabama: McDreamy before his Grey’s Anatomy days. Reese Witherspoon looking the exact glorious same as she does today. It’s the romantic comedy you dreamed of. Except they’re not the endgame. There are also some amazing opportunities to hurl your drink at the screen when Witherspoon makes the wrong choices and ample scenes to cry at. Honestly, this movie should be in every self-help break-up book ever written as the go-to solution.

You Want To Inflict Injuries On Anyone Who Is Happy On Valentine’s Day

Maybe you’ve just broken up with someone. Or found one of those pesky exes pop up in your DM’s like “sup?”. You think love is stupid or at least something that people should be sceptic about. You need fun, light movies that will reinstate your belief in love. Or at the very least, make you laugh out loud at the stupid things people are willing to do for it.

Death Becomes Her: Women fighting over the real thing – power. And immortality. Sure, Bruce Willis also plays a component. But Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep being immortal women who make men fall at their feet because of their illustrious beauty? That’s the real show stealer. And yes, this is ultimately a movie about female friendships, even if it doesn’t seem like it at the beginning. Friendships are for life. And death. And everything that comes after it.

The Proposal: Pretending to date your boss to get a promotion and falling in love with her in the process? Her being Sandra Bullock? Well, count me in. Betty White also stars in it. Betty White. Enough said. You will laugh and cry as you watch these two dummies realise that the real prize isn’t success in your career – it’s all about love. Cue the happy sighs.

Charade: Everyone loves Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, but Charade might be her most underrated movie. Hepburn shines in her role as a young widow caught up in an involuntary heist to find her late husband’s fortune. Cary Grant – changing personalities like suits and blessing us with a hilarious shower scene – makes this comedy unforgettable.

When Harry Met Sally: Yes, I know everyone keeps going on about Sleepless in Seattle, but you have not lived until you’ve watched Meg Ryan fake an orgasm in a crowded restaurant. Trust me. Harry and Sally are like two magnets – try to push them together, and they bounce off each other, mostly with witty but biting remarks. These two take ages to find their way to each other and it’s incredibly fun watching them be pulled together only to fall apart.

You Don’t Understand This Fixation On A Single Day In The Year

You might love love. You might never want to speak to a human again in your entire life. Nevertheless, you don’t get why people put all these expectations on one single day when there are 365 in a year to make sure people know you love them. You just want to lie back, drink some wine, and watch a movie that will take you someplace else for two hours. Preferably something that will make you laugh. Your recommendations are:

Friends With Benefits: Back in my day, no one could shut up about this movie. Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake? Undeniable chemistry. From friends, to friends with benefits, to lovers, this is a silly, heartwarming comedy that will show you that love sometimes isn’t found in the most conventional of ways. (Disclaimer: This movie was around before Tinder. Tinder would have solved these guys’ problem within minutes. Alas, a time before Tinder gave us this masterpiece of quips and quotable lines and we are forever grateful).

Easy A: When Olive Penderghast’s fake loss of her virginity becomes the school’s hot gossip, she finds a way to turn her predicament and sudden fame into a worthwhile business opportunity. Starring the hilarious Emma Stone, this movie will have you laugh out loud as you wonder when someone will stand outside your house with a boombox held above their heads.

What Happens in Vegas: Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz accidentally get married in Vegas and win the jackpot in the casino. Now, neither of them wants to end the marriage and give up their claim on the money. Follow them as they try to trick the other one into violating the rules of their court-set marriage, and end up realising that money might not be the most important part about this relationship.

If you’re really going for the cringe-laugh vibe, I recommend watching Twilight, especially with the cast commentary. Nothing will make you happier than hearing Robert Pattinson laugh about his own lines. Or glittering abs. Or pale makeup. Honestly, it’s basically just Pattinson roasting himself for two hours straight and it is golden. Who cares about love when you can have actors roast themselves, right?

And that’s a wrap! I hope you will enjoy some of these movies! And whatever you decide to do on Valentine’s, remember to have fun. You do you. The Nerd Daily loves you, regardless.

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz | Goodreads

Aristotle is an angry teen with a brother in prison. Dante is a know-it-all who has an unusual way of looking at the world. When the two meet at the swimming pool, they seem to have nothing in common. But as the loners start spending time together, they discover that they share a special friendship—the kind that changes lives and lasts a lifetime. And it is through this friendship that Ari and Dante will learn the most important truths about themselves and the kind of people they want to be.

Empress of the World by Sara Ryan | Goodreads

Nicola Lancaster is spending her summer at the Siegel Institute, a hothouse of smart, intense teenagers. She soon falls in with Katrina (Manic Computer Chick), Isaac (Nice-Guy-Despite-Himself), Kevin (Inarticulate Composer) . . . and Battle, a beautiful blond dancer. The two become friends–and then, startlingly, more than friends. What do you do when you think you’re attracted to guys, and then you meet a girl who steals your heart? A trailblazing debut, reissued with an introduction by acclaimed author David Levithan, and copious back matter, including three graphic novel stories by Sara Ryan (and artists Steve Leiber, Dylan Meconis, and Natalie Nourigat) about the characters.

Cinder Ella by S.T. Lynn | Goodreads

Ella is transgender. She’s known since she was young; being a woman just fit better. She was happier in skirts than trousers, but that was before her stepmother moved in. Eleanor can’t stand her, and after Ella’s father passes she’s forced to revert to Cole, a lump of a son. She cooks, she cleans, and she tolerates being called the wrong name for the sake of a roof over her head. Where else can she go? An opportunity to attend the royal ball transforms Ella’s life. For the first time, strangers see a woman when she walks down the stairs. While Princess Lizabetta invited Cole to the ball, she doesn’t blink an eye when Cinderella is the one who shows. The princess is elegant, bold, and everything Ella never knew she wanted. For a moment she glimpses a world that can accept her, and she holds on tight. She should have known it wouldn’t last. Dumped by her wicked stepmother on the farthest edge of the kingdom, Ella must find a way to let go of the princess and the beautiful life they shared for an hour. She’ll never find her way back. But it’s hard to forget the greatest night of her life when every rose she plants is a reminder.

We Awaken by Calista Lynne | Goodreads

Victoria Dinham doesn’t have much left to look forward to. Since her father died in a car accident, she lives only to fulfill her dream of being accepted into the Manhattan Dance Conservatory. But soon she finds another reason to look forward to dreams when she encounters an otherworldly girl named Ashlinn, who bears a message from Victoria’s comatose brother. Ashlinn is tasked with conjuring pleasant dreams for humans, and through the course of their nightly meetings in Victoria’s mind, the two become close. Ashlinn also helps Victoria understand asexuality and realize that she, too, is asexual. But then Victoria needs Ashlinn’s aid outside the realm of dreams, and Ashlinn assumes human form to help Victoria make it to her dance audition. They take the opportunity to explore New York City, their feelings for each other, and the nature of their shared asexuality. But like any dream, it’s too good to last. Ashlinn must shrug off her human guise and resume her duties creating pleasant nighttime visions—or all of humanity will pay the price.

That Certain Something by Clare Ashton | Goodreads

Love or money? Follow the head or heart? Pia and Cate seem to be flip sides of a coin. But when they meet, they definitely have that certain something, and these questions aren’t so simple after a night like theirs. Pia Benitez-Smith has her head in the clouds of ideals and romance. She’s a photojournalist out to prove herself with her compassionate eye and although not exactly accident prone, most days trouble seems to find her. On one such day, she literally falls into the arms of the beautiful Cate. Elegant, intriguing and classy, Cate is Pia’s polar opposite. When the two dispute the importance of love versus money, Cate is adamant that her perfect night will always be an expensive one. Working class Pia can’t resist the challenge and with the assistance of a beguiling summer night in London, she begins to enchant her new friend. An irresistible couple, a charismatic city, a priceless supporting cast – That Certain Something is a sparkling romcom from Goldie award winner Clare Ashton.

When the Moon Was Ours by Anna-Marie McLemore | Goodreads

To everyone who knows them, best friends Miel and Sam are as strange as they are inseparable. Roses grow out of Miel’s wrist, and rumors say that she spilled out of a water tower when she was five. Sam is known for the moons he paints and hangs in the trees, and for how little anyone knows about his life before he and his mother moved to town. But as odd as everyone considers Miel and Sam, even they stay away from the Bonner girls, four beautiful sisters rumored to be witches. Now they want the roses that grow from Miel’s skin, convinced that their scent can make anyone fall in love.
Henry “Monty” Montague was born and bred to be a gentleman, but he was never one to be tamed. The finest boarding schools in England and the constant disapproval of his father haven’t been able to curb any of his roguish passions—not for gambling halls, late nights spent with a bottle of spirits, or waking up in the arms of women or men. But as Monty embarks on his Grand Tour of Europe, his quest for a life filled with pleasure and vice is in danger of coming to an end. Not only does his father expect him to take over the family’s estate upon his return, but Monty is also nursing an impossible crush on his best friend and traveling companion, Percy. Still it isn’t in Monty’s nature to give up. Even with his younger sister, Felicity, in tow, he vows to make this yearlong escapade one last hedonistic hurrah and flirt with Percy from Paris to Rome. But when one of Monty’s reckless decisions turns their trip abroad into a harrowing manhunt that spans across Europe, it calls into question everything he knows, including his relationship with the boy he adores.

It’s Valentine’s Day! For some, it’s the time where love is in the air and it’s essential to share that love with your significant other and every social media account you have. But for others, it’s a time for copious amounts of eye-rolling and even though you may deny it, deep down there’s a bit of romantic inside you.

To restart that heart of yours, we’ve found some rom-coms that you can’t help but feel the love! Maybe it’s because they are fun with a hopeful atmosphere that everything will be better and work out in the end, or perhaps its the actors who you can’t help but to crush on…

Whether you spend V-Day with your significant other, with friends or family, here are some great rom-coms for a marathon!

Let us know in the comments below what your favourite rom-com is!

Mean Girls
The ultimate classic. Despite being very stereotypical and, with modern values, problematic, the level of pettiness and drama in this movie is hilarious and will give you a good laugh to start V-Day off the right way!

10 Things I Hate About You
It’s always fun when there’s a fake relationship and a love-hate relationship. While Kat and Patrick are not exactly hating on each other, they aren’t on friendly terms, and watching them fall in love with each other is so cute! Not to mention Kat has a no-nonsense attitude that makes it so fun to watch Patrick finding ways to get to her. Plus Heath Ledger!

The Princess Diaries
While not exactly a romance movie, it has the same feeling with watching other chick flicks as it’s lighthearted and fun. It has a more serious theme which is about finding yourself and taking responsibility, but also about not forgetting your friends and family. Mia finally learns to embrace herself and becomes confident in who she is.

27 Dresses
27 Dresses will make you feel sad but also know that it’s for the better. Whenever Jane was hurt by George, Kevin was always there, and so you know exactly who she will end up with. It also portrays the complexity of sisterly relationship perfectly!

Love, Rosie
Best friend turn lovers, with a high level of angst. Whenever they are getting closer, the universe keeps pulling them apart. You’re so hopeful while watching the movie even though it’s heartbreak 99% of the time. This movie is literally a roller coaster of emotions!

A Walk to Remember
Obviously romance isn’t always sunshine and rainbows, so to play the mood a bit, we suggest A Walk to Remember. The movie isn’t quite as good as the book, but it’s still captures all the feelings and sadness lingering throughout the whole movie. Some people will prefer The Fault in Our Stars, but I will take this movie any day.

Mamma Mia!
To finish it off, how can you not have a musical? You can’t help but sing along and get in the mood with Mamma Mia. It depicts amazing an mother-daughter relationship, amazing girl friendships, so many fun and catchy songs with the beautiful Santorini as its backdrop. What’s not to love about this movie?
