Hi, Vaishnavi! Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

Hi! I’m the author of Kaikeyi, Goddess of the River, and Ten Incarnations of Rebellion, along with my new release We Dance Upon Demons, a contemporary fantasy set at an abortion clinic. In my day job, I’m a civil rights lawyer and a longtime abortion clinic volunteer, so I’m deeply passionate about reproductive rights and excited to share this story with the world!

When did you first discover your love for writing and stories?

I have loved writing and stories for as long as I can remember. My very first word was “book,” and my mom has saved little stories I wrote back when I was five years old, so it’s always been a part of me. I lost my passion for writing somewhere toward the end of high school, and rediscovered it several years later at the beginning of law school when I needed a creative outlet. I’m so fortunate that stories have always been there for me, and that they embraced me as an old friend when I found my way back to them.

Your latest novel, We Dance Upon Demons, is out now! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

Abortion + Depression + Demons + Dance = Catharsis

What can readers expect?

Readers can expect a mix of real world horror and fun fantasy elements. We Dance Upon Demons follows a depressed abortion clinic worker, Nisha, who accidentally acquires magical powers from a demon. There’s a realistic look at the daily functioning of reproductive health clinics and their struggles, mixed with demon hijinks all across the city of Chicago. So expect a story that acknowledges the bleak politics of women’s autonomy while also providing hope and strength.

Where did the inspiration for We Dance Upon Demons come from?

The idea for this book came about when I was struggling to come to terms with the fall of Roe and to find the motivation to keep fighting. I drew on my own feelings of hopelessness, as well as my knowledge of the reproductive justice movement, both as a lawyer and a longtime volunteer. Other bits of We Dance Upon Demons were added because I thought they would bring some lightness to the story—I love Indian art and mythology and dance, so all of those elements got folded in.

Were there any moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?

I really enjoyed writing all the scenes between Nisha, the main character, and Muya, the demon that she accidentally frees from a statue. They start off having an antagonistic relationship, but as time goes on, it becomes a bit of a buddy comedy, although tinged with suspicion because he is a demon. I loved writing their evolving relationship and banter, as well as exploring how a demon of ignorance would react to being in the modern world.

Did you face any challenges whilst writing? How did you overcome them?

The hardest part of writing this book was balancing the bleakness of the reproductive rights landscape with the message of hope that I wanted to leave readers with. The book started off very dark and hopeless, but as I revised, I myself had the experience of regaining my resolve. I integrated that experience into the book, and gave it a slightly more hopeful character—but striking that balance took a lot of time and care.

What’s next for you?

Next up for me is The Library of Lost Time which is coming in fall 2027. It’s a time travel novel about book banning with my first ever romance! I’m so excited to share it with readers next year. In the meantime, I will be disappearing for a bit after the launch of We Dance Upon Demons because I am also launching a baby this summer.

Lastly, what books are you looking forward to picking up? Any you’ve read so far this year that you’ve enjoyed?

I’ve recently enjoyed Shay Kauwe’s The Killing Spell, which is an urban fantasy with Native Hawaiian representation. I’m looking forward to the release of Emily Varga’s The River She Became; I read it last year and can’t wait for it to be out in the world.

Matsya, Fish

I learned how to hope at nineteen.

It started with a song. I did not, could not, know what was to come—the blood that would stain the streets, the fire that would fill the skies, the scars that would carve our souls—but even if I had, still I would have chosen it. Still I would have set myself on the path of rebellion.

On a windy March day in 1962, I pulled on my best and newest frock, a long navy-blue gown that Aai and I had commissioned from the local tailor. The high-waisted bust loosened into draped pleats, embroidered with silver sequins, and the sleeves went down to my elbows, pretty and modest. British styles often took some years to come to India, so the trend here had probably already gone out of fashion on their island. But I could not wear anything else, for saris or lehengas were not considered formal enough for British events.

The pointed heels were my least favorite part of the outfit, as they looked painful and felt worse. But Aai had insisted on buying them for my “promising career,” and so I reluctantly slipped on the heels and staggered out of the flat. No matter what the British had done to my Baba, Aai was proud that I had been selected as one of the token students attending the chancellor’s annual education night, a glittery affair meant to help philanthropists and educators feel better about the British project in India.

I had not told her my plan for the night. She would not have approved.

The headmaster had given me fare for a rickshaw, so I flagged one down and directed the driver to go to City Hall. He looked surprised but did not question it. After all, it was over an hour’s ride from our neighborhood in Kingston, the Indian section covering the north of Salsette Island, to Old Bombay, the British peninsula of Salsette that had once been the southern tip of the Seven Islands. He would earn a good fare.

As we traveled toward southern Kingston, the homes became progressively nicer, the streets cleaner, the shops pricier. Here, the richest Indians could own their land—or at least rent it in ninety-nine-year terms from the British, who were the true owners of the isle. I passed by my school, which was twenty minutes by rickshaw but over an hour by the chain of buses and walking I usually undertook. Without fanfare, we crossed the invisible dividing line into Bombay. It was the first time in my memory I had left Kingston. The fare to Bombay was out of the question, and there was no reason to go anyway. I was almost disappointed, at first, for the homes here looked worse than the homes in Kingston. They were small, crowded, dilapidated.

But the deeper we traveled into Bombay, the nicer things got, and I realized—just as the richest Indians lived next to the British, the poorest British lived next to the Indians. As the buildings became more ornate, the clothes changed too; suddenly it appeared that every man was wearing a suit. People were out and about, not preparing for a curfew that discouraged leaving home after work for fear of getting caught outside after hours. I leaned my head out of the window to observe, glad that it was still March, before the muggy heat enveloped the city and melted even the tar on the roads. So this was how the British lived. The raucous colors of Kingston were nowhere to be seen, replaced by an unrelenting gray dullness.

As we approached downtown, the rickshawala asked, “Madam, can you spare ten more minutes?”

“Why? Is there a disturbance up ahead?”

“Nothing like that. I want to take an alternate route,” he said. “No extra charge.”

I had left early, so I figured it didn’t matter much. “Yes, whatever way you think is best.”

“This is best,” he assured me. We drove for a little while longer, rounded the curve, and—

“Queen’s Necklace,” the rickshawala declared proudly.

I gasped before I could stop myself. We stood at one end of Back Bay, the southernmost bay of Salsette. In the setting sun, an arc of streetlights connected us to the other side of the bay in an unbroken chain of golden pearls, more striking than I had ever imagined. The Old Bombay skyline stretched ahead of us, and with it, the promise of this city.

He drove us down Marine Drive. For a moment we too were a part of the Queen’s Necklace, the blurred, ever-moving lights that formed the string connecting each pearl. My lips stretched into a smile, but my shoulders tensed. The contradiction of it all—the British lights creating true splendor—made my head hurt.

Finally, we reached my destination. City Hall was beautiful. Far more beautiful than I had expected, and far more beautiful than it deserved to be. A century ago, just after the Sepoy Mutiny, Indian laborers built this palace out of marble, with columns of white and gray adorning the outside. The steps leading up to the doors were nearly pristine, despite the fact that the city never was. It appeared as though every light in the building was on. I supposed electricity rations wouldn’t apply to those doing the rationing.

For the first time, I doubted my plan.

I had wanted to refuse the headmaster’s invitation. What kind of daughter was I, to kiss the boots of those who drove my Baba from my home? It had been over a decade since I last saw him, and my memories of him were fraying at the edges. But when I told my mother, she said, “Of course you will go!” Then she hugged me tight and whispered, “Do you think they don’t still watch us? Do you think they do not monitor us for odd behavior? I did not raise an idiot, Kalki. We must not do anything to raise their suspicions. You cannot refuse their invitation.” She made a good point, and I hated it.

That night I tossed and turned, not knowing what I should do. I tried to remember Baba, his favorite song. I could hear his voice in the back of my mind, singing, but the words were lost. Vande mataram . . . ​and then nothing. What would he want me to do? That was when it hit me. The songs my Baba sang were long banned, the public’s copies collected and burned. Nobody alive would dare sing them, if they remembered them at all. But City Hall would have them, I was sure, because the British loved their paperwork.

Now, looking up at the soaring white columns and marble doors, I wondered how I would possibly search their files. How would I even know where to look? If they had the power to build this place, then they certainly could prevent me from ever reaching my target. But it was too late to turn back.

I squared my shoulders and climbed the steps slowly, hitching my dress up so I wouldn’t fall. A guard at the door checked off my name and gestured me into a lobby even more breathtaking than the outside. Above me, a tapered dome curved gracefully, adorned with glittering stones and brightly colored paint. Busts of men lined the edges of the room, and a banner reading “1962 Kingston Education Summit” hung above a small stage. The people in the great hall were equally gorgeous. For a moment, I felt awe toward them; the women’s dresses utterly eclipsed mine, and I had never seen men’s suits as crisp or dark. I felt vastly underdressed, the embroidery on my dress faded and plain in comparison.

Of course, most of the people in the room were British. I spotted a few Indians scattered among them, but they were obviously there for the same reason I was, to be the chancellor of Kingston’s tokens. Servers, all of them Indian, ducked in and out of the crowd. I did not spot Yashu, my good friend who was supposed to be in attendance with me.

As I took all this in, a British woman approached me. “What is your name?” she asked.

“Kalki Divekar, madam,” I said, wondering why she was talking to me.

“And which school are you from?”

“I’m from the Clarke Young Women’s Academy, madam.”

“That’s a great school for your people,” she told me, as if I didn’t already know. “The Clarke family is so esteemed. You must be proud to go to a school bearing their name.”

“Thank you,” I forced out.

“We are so glad you could be here tonight. Please, get some food and mingle. Many of the people here will want to speak with you. Your perspective is so important for the work we do. The chancellor will start his remarks in an hour or so.”

I tried to hide my total shock. But she seemed sincere, as if she really did believe my perspective was important. I suppressed a wild urge to laugh.

The woman put her hands on my shoulders and gave me a little push forward, as if I were a bullock cart that just needed to get started. I stumbled into the crowd. True to what she had said, people began turning to talk to me.

“So, what do your parents do?” a mustachioed man asked me.

“My mother is an assistant to a doctor, sir,” I replied, omitting the fact that her “assisting” work consisted of sorting files, sanitizing supplies, and organizing rooms more than providing medical care. “My father—isn’t with us anymore.”

“Did he die?” the man asked thoughtlessly. In a way, in this moment, he owned me. Disobedience and disrespect were punishable offenses. Numbness crept into my heart.

“No, sir, he left us,” I said quietly.

Kaikeyi is the story of a woman who wants to make a difference in her husband’s kingdom and women’s lives when in her own homeland, she was a nobody in spite of being a princess. She is an amazing horse-rider, a fearless warrior, and an aspirational mother who understands that as a woman she has a role to play that is also set in stone by society, but that does not mean that she will not challenge it and forge her own path.

Knowing the Ramayana made this a very enjoyable book as many of these characters were known, even if some only by name, and finally got a glimpse of what their story would have been like! My reading experience of this book is incomplete without my background in the Ramayana, so here’s a brief summary!

The Ramayana is the story of Ram. King Dashrath of Ayodhya had three wives and, at the time of marrying his youngest wife, Kaikeyi, he had promised her that her son would be the king. When Dashrath is ready to abdicate the throne, Kaikeyi reminds him of his promise and Dashrath is forced to send Ram, his eldest born from his first wife, Kaushalya, on an exile. Plenty happens in the long years of exile and when finally Ram returns, taking his place on the throne, he forgives Kaikeyi. This video offers a more detailed summary of the epic. However, there are many versions of the Ramayana and some details may differ. For example, in Kaikeyi and stories I grew up with, Ram was not blue as well as recalling Kaikeyi being a jealous third queen who wanted more influence and was manipulated by her maid.

This is where this novel comes in—allowing people like me who are familiar with this epic and never questioned why she really sent Ram on exile to imagine her and get to know her side of the story. The focus is so much on Ram in the childhood tales that I was curious about who Kaikeyi was a person.

Vaishnavi Patel writes a beautiful version of this queen, imagining her as a young girl whose mother has left her and her brothers with their father. The journey of how she grows to be an amazing person who is sharp and aware of the pain that girls go through in a patriarchal society is depicted. Kaikeyi has discovered magic, but at the same time, she is forsaken by gods. She is not perfect and has learned ways to manipulate people, but she is also not all-bad that the Ramayana summary videos make her to be.

Patel succeeded in redefining what little I knew of Kaikeyi and making her into an unforgettable character that would fight gods to keep her morals and mortal world at peace. Her portrayal is refreshing and immersive. The court of Ayodhya is described vividly and it sounds like a peaceful kingdom that Kaikeyi built with her sister wives. She has some magic and the part of her being god-touched was new to me. The power Kaikeyi had was intriguing and how she grew to understand and use it better—how it caused her so much more pain for her decisions, but she had to undertake those actions anyway to stand by her morals.

The presence of Ravana in Kaikeyi was also quite interesting. Ravana is the antagonist of the Ramayana, the ashura that Lord Vishnu has reincarnated on earth as Ram to destroy. His friendship with Kaikeyi was something unexpected to me. This book plays with a certain version of the Ramayana where Sita is actually Ravana’s daughter. Kaikeyi sets it up as something that can be explored in the future. Through the time it does cover, the story sets up the stage for the Ramayana, and like all hindu epics, there is a semi-frequent reminder by gods that it is all inevitable anyway.

I don’t know much about Ram’s childhood, but in all stories I grew up with, he was portrayed as an amazing person. In some aspects, the version of Ram in Kaikeyi makes perfect sense: as someone who knows he is god incarnate, he would exert certain influences, bordering on manipulation, on the people around him. He would take the teachings of the gods very seriously and would not be open to change, particularly the changing role of women. Where it got a little out of hand for me was when he decided to get a god’s help to teach Kaikeyi, his mother, a lesson. I cannot reconcile this version of Ram with the benevolent prince and king of the original epic. How could he be so disrespectful towards Kaikeyi, especially considering the values he was brought up with? This is one of the few points where I felt that this book differed from the sentiments of the original that I am familiar with.

The way this was written gave me the opportunity to understand the pain that Kaikeyi and the mothers felt as they saw Ram’s transformation too late to correct it and had to send him away. It also makes me curious to see how this Ram evolves into the one I grew up knowing, because with retellings, the main events cannot change and one can’t deviate too much from the fundamental teachings and characters.

Kaikeyi and Ayodhya have been the highlights of this book, especially the portrayal of Kaikeyi as a powerful queen who was misunderstood and yet always tried to do what was in the best interest of her family and kingdom. The men in her life sometimes claimed promises made to her as their own and caused meaningless war to defend their pride. There were many times when I felt angry towards the men and the way they treated the women in this book. I loved that she had the support of Dashrath’s other wives and that the three of them held the kingdom together in times of chaos.

Kaikeyi is not just another mythology fantasy to me. It stands by itself, as a unique work inspired by the earlier history that led to the Ramayana, portraying one of the many takes on the events. It made me feel at home. Little things like the use of regional dialects of that time in the writing (this is most obvious with the use of the word ‘radyni’ which means ‘queen’. In Hindi, we use ‘rani’.) added a lot to the book for me. Kaikeyi is complete with powerful women, court intrigue, magic, war with humans, fights with supernatural beings, familial and political tensions of the time when the world was composed of princely states. This will be a cherished addition to the Hindu mythology and retelling section in my home library.
