More often we are reading stories where heroines wield their anger as a weapon and a force to reclaim their power in worlds designed to keep them small, and it’s striking a chord with millions of women.

While these stories are so often entertainment and escapism from the real world, they also provide a space where the complex, often silenced emotion of female anger is not only validated but celebrated. It becomes the driving force behind rebellions, the fuel for mastering long-dormant magic, and the courage to stand up to oppressive systems, whether they are patriarchal rulers or ancient curses.

For many readers, including myself, seeing this on the page is a deeply cathartic experience, which is precisely why I wanted to explore it in Songbird of the Sorrows. Aella’s anger is a slow burn that refuses to be extinguished. As a banished princess reduced to a spy for the very kingdom that cast her aside, she enters a deadly set of bridal trials to infiltrate another kingdom. But as she uncovers the harsh truths of both her realm and her mission, Aella’s quiet rage becomes her greatest asset, and she must decide whether to remain a weapon in someone else’s hand or to let her fury guide her.

The Legendborn Cycle is one of my all-time favourite YA series, so it will come as no surprise that Oathbound was a book I was counting down towards release day for. It is just such an epic tale with characters that find a space in your heart and a plot that is compulsively readable. With each book, Deonn has elevated her world even more. Everything is intentional and placed so well, giving us space to learn more about details from previous books and how they slot into the overarching jigsaw puzzle of this series. Deonn is also ruthless for ending these books with cliffhangers that make you almost drop the book and are desperate for more.

Bree is the beating heart of this series and a protagonist for the history books. She has been through so much and a lot of Oathbound grapples with the titles and expectations that have been forced upon her. At the end of the day, she is a grieving teenager thrust into a world that does not want to accept her but is reliant on her power. That is an incredibly heavy burden to bear—all of that responsibility and expectations. Bree’s journey in this book is linked to her reclamation of her power, honing it even further and understanding her abilities around it more. This comes with some severe consequences that are heart-breaking to watch play out. In particular, there is a scene in the final third of the book that epitomises the impossibility of her situation. I fear what Deonn might have in store for us in the next book.

Alongside Bree, we get some new viewpoints this time around. I won’t give anything away, because I think readers will enjoy finding these out for themselves. I will just say I loved these new perspectives and what they added for our understanding of the wider world and plots going on around Bree. It adds a depth and intrigue that is always expanding. On a lighter note, they also spark some potential new connections that are enjoyable. The romance within this book is angsty and gives a new spin on familiar tropes. These are teenagers caught up in complex and deadly games of chess as well as grappling with the traumas they have faced in the past. You get a little more of some characters’ backstories here and the details are just a gut-punch. So when they get to have these more romantic moments of escape and connection with one another, they feel bittersweet. You know they’re a temporary moment of hope amidst the darkness.

This series has such fascinating worldbuilding with roots in real-life evil. I love how unafraid Deonn is to tackle racism and white supremacy, clearly showing the way power structures reinforce this and work to maintain it at all costs. There is a power in calling it out for what it is, especially in this political climate. Black girls deserve to see themselves represented in badass but three-dimensional protagonists like Bree. Even just having her front and centre on all three covers so far is an impactful choice for representation. Within the series, the magic systems we see are so well-constructed and intriguing, but they are forged from places of unimaginable pain. Deonn continues the threads from Bloodmarked to widen our understanding of this world and the power systems at play here, as well as adding new dimensions. It is so immersive and all-consuming.

Oathbound floored me. The Legendborn Cycle continues to be one of the best YA fantasy series out there with a phenomenal protagonist in Bree. This is a powerhouse of a book and I am so excited to see what comes next.

Bloodmarked picks up just after Legendborn and the book hits the ground running. The pace is absolutely brutal and readers will reach the halfway point before they are aware of it as the speed and nature of the events unfolding magnify the intensity of every single moment. Every word in this book is crafted efficiently; any inconsequential scene or unnecessary occurrence is edited out or was perhaps not written at all. The book is tight and it remains so, despite the length being 576 pages.

The plot is intricate and layered with the secrets in this book even having secrets of their own and nothing is as it seems. As a reader we tend to categorise authors and their styles in our mind and create general ideas or predictions about how a story will grow and which direction it might bend. These might not even be conscious conclusions we arrive at, but subconscious calculations. None of this works with anything that Deonn writes. Her writing and the book’s plot are in cahoots and they redirect, allure and intrigue the reader to see exactly what they’re supposed to when they’re supposed to.

Deonn does with Bloodmarked what she did with its predecessor with the emotional ingredient in the story. Legendborn was not just about the larger mission that could seem to be the most important aspect of the book. This book, this series, is also about the destiny that Briana Matthews writes for herself. Her journey of understanding her past, the influence it has on her choices in her present and her decisions for the future are all a big part of Bloodmarked. Briana is a young, brave, scared, powerful teenager with a heavy destiny on her shoulders and Deonn does right by her. She upends the narrative to reflect the truth we never thought to exist and those are moments I’ll always remember reading.

Legendborn laid a strong foundation for the worldbuilding and Bloodmarked builds on it, further strengthening the story and deepening the connection the readers have to it. Deonn has clearly planned this out to the last word and her imagination to create this world with all its layered complexities is awe inspiring.

The friendships in Bloodmarked are some of the most heartwarming parts of the book. Friendships forged over decades and those that are lifetimes old all hold a special and sacred place in this story (the extent to which is astounding and emotional). Sel and Nick too have large presences in both, Briana’s life and the book, and revelations about the relationship between the three of them play out before our eyes. For readers who have never been fond of a love triangle, Deonn somehow manages to skate by the typical pitfalls that come with the category. You see past these tropes, past the words, past everything, to the heart of the story.

If as a reader your heart clenched and your tear ducts were jerked at the injustice and racism the protagonist and her friend are subjected to in Legendborn, prepare to be inflamed. This book, just like its predecessor, isn’t here to dull the truth. It’s a knife, sharp to our ribs to truly see the truth of how beautiful differences are perceived in the most abhorrent and unapologetically cruel ways. Deonn reminds you with every word just how deeply racism has sunk into the actions and thoughts of people; so much so that they don’t even perceive it as what it is in themselves and neglect to perceive or recognise it in others as well.

Bloodmarked by Tracy Deonn was a 10 for me. Expect betrayal, love, unending adventure, plot twists, sacrifice, magic, chaos, and balance. You should most definitely expect to forget everything you’re expecting because the book is an adventure no one can be ready for.

After her mother dies in a car accident, Bree Matthews keeps the grief from swallowing her whole by separating from her old self. When she begins attending UNC Chapel Hill, her mother’s former college, as part of an Early College program, Bree suddenly finds herself thrown into a new world beyond anything she knew was real. A world that is somehow tied to her mother’s past and death. With the help of the absolutely charming Nick and the absolutely aggravating Selwyn, Bree uncovers secrets about herself and her heritage that have been hidden for generations. But as it always is with magic, there is a cost.

There are books that will stick in reader’s minds for days and months and years to come, and after finishing Legendborn, I am positive this will be one of those books. Deonn’s writing is nothing short of impactful. Whether she is making a slight dig at a popular vampire story or shining a spotlight on racism Black people face daily, every single word Deonn writes hits an emotion. I cannot think of another book I have ever read that has been so well balanced with fantasy and modern day realities.

Drawing from her time studying at UNC Chapel Hill, Deonn is able to craft an intensely real setting for the reader. And within the worldbuilding, Deonn brings everything that is real about life for Black people in the South. To walk on land where enslaved people built the very buildings you are in is not something any should have to endure, but Deonn brings Bree’s experiences to the page in a way that will strike chords with many readers. The stark realities about the South are woven into the story, not for shock or education, but because they are real and should not be ignored.

Bree Matthews is the kind of main character I want to see more of. She is not defined by any one aspect of herself, but multifaceted and imperfect. Bree is powerful as a human, but begins to find new powers and aspects of herself as she grows throughout the story. She has confidence and doubts and poor reactions and incredibly smart moments and so much more. So often, when we are presented with a female main character in a YA fantasy novel, she is all powerful and knows how to kill a man 17 different ways with a toothpick, and that’s fine, but it’s not real. Bree is real. She is so real that while reading, I found myself tearing up just from feeling her emotions. I can’t even remember the last time a book has done that to me.

The one aspect of the book that may trip some readers up is the secret society structure While it is easy to get lost in the intricacies of The Order’s ways, there is never a moment when it isn’t interesting. There is a lot going on within The Order, and though it can be hard to navigate, Deonn always keeps the line of what we need to know for the story in the forefront. And while the magic within The Order is interesting, the real star in the magic of this story is the Rootcraft. For the sake of spoilers, I won’t go into it in this review, but the way Deonn weaves Rootcraft into the story is so well done and I look forward to watching Bree learn more about it.

There is so much to love in Legendborn and I feel that if I were to lay everything out in a single review, we’d be here for days. Being a constant reader of YA novels, I sometimes feel like I’ve seen and felt it all, but Legendborn rekindled that fire in me that burns for stories that are outside my own experience. Bree and Tracy’s story will stay with me for a long time and I believe I am not the only one who will feel that way.

Simply put, Legendborn by Tracy Deonn is one of the best books I have ever read.

Hello and thank you for taking the time to answer some questions for The Nerd Daily! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and Legendborn?

Sure! Sometimes I describe myself as a second generation fangirl who happens to write books, and I think it’s actually pretty accurate! I am an 80’s kid who wore out her VHS of The Neverending Story, a former academic, and an author. Legendborn is my debut novel, and it’s a contemporary fantasy set on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill. It’s about a sixteen-year-old girl named Bree who infiltrates a campus secret society that she believes may have a connection to her mother’s death. When the secret society, who call themselves the Legendborn, reveal that they are the descendants of the knights of the Round Table and are fighting a centuries-old magical war, Bree’s mission to find the truth gets more fun, more complicated—and more dangerous.

What was your writing process like for Legendborn? Do you have any particular writing traditions?

My favorite writing rituals include incense (I prefer amber, but nag champa is a close second!) and my Spotify playlist of movie soundtracks. The one I had on rotation the most for this book was the Captain America: The Winter Soldier score. I also like the score to Jupiter Ascending. Both have a big, epic feel but focus on different emotions that all felt very appropriate for Legendborn.

What kind of research went into the crafting of this story?

I did tons of research for Legendborn. Tons. One of the more challenging aspects of working with the legends of King Arthur is that there are so many stories in a very old canon. I call it “fifteen-hundred-year-old global fanfic” because there truly is no single King Arthur story or legend; there are multiplicities of them. Writers and storytellers across the centuries and in different countries have introduced new characters, put their own spin on existing stories, and found new ways to tell even the same story in movie or TV adaptations. I treated the big wide canon of Arthuriana like a giant toolbox, and pulled the aspects I knew I wanted to most work with to tell my story and left others behind. I also worked with a Welsh language consultant and medievalist, two American medievalists, and consulted with two people trained in swordplay for fight scenes. For the history of the campus, I did a lot of primary source research and consulting about UNC’s campus, and drew on my own experiences there as a double graduate.

What was your favorite scene to write in Legendborn? And were there any that were particularly challenging?

I have tons of favorites, but one that stands out is the tunnel sequence about two-thirds of the way through the book. I won’t say any spoilers, but the back and forths between Bree and the other character, and the revelations in that scene, were circling my brain probably 2 years before I actually wrote it. The climax scene was very challenging; endings usually are for me. You have to bring all the threads together in a satisfying way and keep the reader engaged while fulfilling the promises from earlier in the book.

There are a lot of hard issues handled throughout the story, particularly Bree dealing with the death of her mother. How do you decompress from writing such heavy topics?

Writing through those very topics is actually a way to process them for me, so I didn’t always need a ritual afterward. Other times, I had to escape into something completely different that used a different part of my brain, like a humorous Webtoon that has lots of artwork and tells a story in a visual medium.

Legendborn has one of my favorite covers of the year! Did you have any input with the process of creating the cover? What was your reaction when you saw the cover?

Isn’t it fantastic? I actually sent my very short wishlist of input to my publishing team before the cover was even discussed because I wanted my thoughts in the mix as early as possible. I knew I wanted an illustrated cover like the fantasy novels I grew up with, I knew that Bree had to be prominent with big, curly hair, and I gave them a suggestion of using one particular image from the book. When I saw the cover I was totally stunned that they’d taken my input at all—that’s not a given in this industry.  I immediately recognized the image as Bree, and could tell in the way that Bree was illustrated that Simon and Schuster had made it a priority to select a Black artist. Hillary D. Wilson, the cover artist, went above and beyond and completely floored me.

In the author letter that came with the Legendborn ARC, you mention how your mother introduced you to comic books and Star Trek. Were there other fandoms that you shared? And how have these shared fandoms shaped you as an author?

My mother was such a fangirl. She loved Star Wars so much that she even geeked out about Return of the Jedi in my baby book, so I definitely fell in love with Star Wars through her!  She and I both loved X-Men, the Indiana Jones movies, and tons of 80s and 90’s SFF TV shows. Anything from SeaQuest DSV to Hercules and Xena to Quantum Leap and Alien Nation. I was introduced to Frank Herbert’s Dune through her old, tattered paperback copy.  I grew up staring longingly at her science fiction and fantasy-filled bookshelves, so the SFF genre has always been around me. In more ways than one, I wouldn’t have the career and passions I have without her influence, so when I call myself “a second generation fangirl” it’s an homage to her. But my engagement with fandom looks a lot different than her engagement, because I grew up with the internet. Participating in fandoms online has definitely changed the way I think about story and informed how I craft relationship dynamics in my writing. I very much wrote Legendborn with lots of invitational “openings” for fandom, whether that’s fanfic or fanart.

Do you have any favorite books, movies, or TV series from 2020 that you can recommend?

I haven’t seen it yet, but I’m really looking forward to the third season of Star Trek: Discovery. I can’t wait to read Naomi Novik’s A Deadly Education and have already bought two editions. This isn’t out in 2020, but I am really looking forward to Marvel’s Loki TV show whenever that premieres.
