After attempting the impossible, Zelie and Amari have brought magic back to Orïsha, but their ritual had unintended consequences. When they brought the magic back, they not only did so to the maji, but to the nobles with magic ancestry too. Now Zelie is struggling to unite the Orïsha when the enemy has a power just as great as their own. When the monarchy and military unite to maintain control of Orïsha, Zelie must fight to secure Amari’s right to the throne, while protecting new maji from the wrath of the monarchy. As things begin to escalate out of control, Zelie must find a way to unite Orïsha, or watch as they each other apart.

I dove into this book with hopes that things were finally going to look up for Zelie and Amari. Instead, this is only the start of things getting much, much worse. Now that magic has returned, they also have to contend with nobility that has been given magic power. It’s an intense period for everyone. The scenes where the maji and nobility clash are so intense and bloody, and unyielding. Orïsha remains broken, and there seems no way out of this darkness. As Zelie and Amari attempt to fix things, a character emerges that shakes everything up and my goodness, I was so mad about it. I don’t want to spoil it, so if you’re curious, you’ll need to go pick it up and read it.

What I truly wasn’t expecting was the division that comes between Zelie and Amari. Wow, does it hurt both of these girls. I could see the pain that both of these girls are experiencing and empathise with both, however, neither seems to be really thinking with any sort of logic outside of winning their battles completely and without fail. Unfortunately, the tensions that rise because of their disagreements only serve to put them each in a darker place. Especially Amari. I’m not sure that either of them experience growth in this book, in all honesty, it feels as though we regress.

Everything is honestly happening so quickly in this book that I times I found myself going back and reading things again a second time because I would get a little lost. We’ve got three character’s point of view to contend with, and lots of new/old characters. However, I loved reading the battle/action scenes. They were ruthless, unapologetic, and very bloody. We have some tragic deaths that made me grip the book in horror because of the devastation that it causes our characters.

In everything there’s going on, of course we still have a bit of romantic development happening, which can arguably be for better or worse. At this point, everything is uncertain to me. I have so many theories that my brain can’t handle them all. If I’m being honest, I just want the characters that I love to be okay. Man, this book gave me a lot of feelings.

Aside from the breakneck pace that surrounds this book, I really don’t have anything else to complain about. I did want to have a little more development between certain characters, but only because I think it’s vital for the readers to get that insight, especially in terms of some of the more villainous characters. However, this book is already very long, so I can only imagine how much longer it would be if those POVs got added in as well.

I’m rating this book a 10/10. Although the pacing felt very fast, the story itself continued to be an amazing tale. I’m so in love with all of these characters and I can’t wait to see what’s next for them. The ending was so *redacted for spoiler*, that I just…ARGH. You should read this book, add it to your TBR, borrow it from your library, but let me know when you read it, because boy would I love to have someone else to shout to about it.

To kick off the second half of the year, July sees Riley Sager, Michele Campbell, and Paul Tremblay deliver the thrills, while Kayln Josephson and Elizabeth Lim bring the fantasy, and Jasmine Guillory gifts us with a great new romance novel.

Well-known and best-selling authors Ruth Ware and Philippa Greggory deliver new novels in August, along with thrillers from Alex North and Lauren North, a debut YA fantasy novel from Erin A. Craig, and a fun romance from Hannah Orenstein.

September has some highly anticipated books awaiting us with the final instalment in Jay Kristoff’s Nevernight series, a sequel to Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, and of course, a new novel from the King himself, Stephen King. If you’re in need of some fantasy, be sure to turn to Adrienne Young, Tamsyn Muir, and Alix E. Harrow.

With only three months left, October holds Leigh Bardugo’s first adult fantasy novel, along with exciting titles from Garth Nix, Renée Ahdieh, Christina Lauren, and Joe Hill. There is absolutely no denying that 2018 has been a fantastic book year thus far. Whether you read Romance, YA, or Adult Fantasy, there are a ton of great new releases to satiate even the most insatiable bookworm. What has really made 2018 a great book year though is the number of debut authors coming out of the woodwork. The best thing about these debut authors? Their novels aren’t reading like the works of first time authors.

Who doesn’t love a dark retelling of The Little Mermaid? To Kill A Kingdom was dark, fast-paced, and exceeded all expectations. With a heart stealing siren as one main character, and a siren killing prince as the other, it was bound to be an interesting adventure. Christo’s writing flowed smoothly and made the book a quick and enjoyable read.

The cover of this book may be a little bit deceiving, I certainly didn’t expect for The Kiss Quotient to be such a steamy read. When Stella decides that she needs relationship practice, she hires a male escort, Michael to teach her the ins and outs of dating. Stella and Michael’s chemistry jumped off the page and their romantic development felt so genuine. Hoang is releasing another book with an autistic main character next year and we can’t wait to read it.

Laura Sebastian – Ash Princess

Fake date: one of the most entertaining tropes in the romance industry. When done right, it can be a ton of fun to read about. Fortunately for readers, Guillory did a fantastic job with this beloved trope. When Drew needs a last-minute date to his ex-girlfriend’s wedding, he does the unthinkable and invites a total stranger. Alexa and Drew’s relationship seems doomed from the start, but their journey is full of laughs and yes, quite a few steamy moments as well.

Adrienne Young – Sky in the Deep

Sky in the Deep has an incredible message, one that readers can really connect with, particularly in this day and age. It is a wonderfully deep novel about hate and the negative impacts it can have on a culture. With Vikings, betrayal and a strong family presence, it is a powerful read and a stunning debut for Young.
