Hi, Tia! When did you first discover your love for writing and stories?

From the moment I could read, I was obsessed with writing. I’d read my favorite books over and over again, and copy my favorite lines into school notebooks. I didn’t realize that I was teaching myself how to write fiction! I actually wrote my first “book” in second grade in one of my mom’s Steno Pads. The book was called “Peter and the Crystal Bunny,” and I even taped my second-grade photo to the back and wrote a little About the Author section: Tia, 7, is probably the youngest riter you know.

Your latest novel, Audre & Bash Are Just Friends, is out now! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

What can readers expect?

A sweetly romantic journey to falling in love for the first time, during one sizzling-hot Brooklyn summer! It stars Audre, a type-A overachiever (president of her class, captain of debate team, thriving student therapy business…). She’s good at almost everything, except having fun! So she hires the new bad boy in town, Bash, to teach her how to have a good time. Antics ensue!

Where did the inspiration for Audre & Bash Are Just Friends come from?

Audre is actually a returning character! Audre & Bash Are Just Friends is a spinoff from my adult novel, Seven Days in June. In that book, she’s a precocious, witty 12-year-old daughter of the female protagonist, Eva Mercy. And she became the fan favorite! Readers thought she was funny and quotable, and I’d always get DMs asking when she’d get her own book! I decided it’d be fun to catch up with her four years later, as a sixteen-year-old navigating first love.

Did you always have in mind to explore Audre when Seven Days In June released in 2021?

Not at all! I had no idea that she’d be a fan favorite. I wrote her as sort-of an audience proxy; the person in the room who was wiser than everyone else. She had Eva and Shane’s number!

Were there any moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?

I loved writing Audre’s best friend Reshma. She was a character unlike any others I’ve written—but I see Reshma-types all over NYC. She’s the child of famous, wealthy, absent parents, trying to figure out how to live with little-to-no guidance. She gets into trouble and makes risky decisions, but she’s got a great heart.

Did you face any challenges whilst writing? How did you overcome them?

My biggest concern was that I wouldn’t know how to write teens in a convincing way. But my sixteen-year-old daughter (and her friends!) were extraordinarily helpful. Especially with slang, and anecdotes about high-school scandals!

What’s next for you?

I can’t say too much, but I have an adult novel coming out in summer 2026. It’ll be a juicy one!

Releasing on April 16th 2024, When I Think Of You is a sweeping second chance romance from debut author Myah Ariel where the unexpected spark of two former flames may force them to choose between their dreams and each other.

As a nineties kid with an old-soul, I feel like I was destined to become a romance author. Whether I was riding in the backseat of my mom’s station wagon belting out to R&B icons like Mary J. Blige and Toni Braxton or getting dressed for school with the antics of Hillman College’s coeds as background noise–I’ve grown up surrounded by potent illustrations of Black Love. Naturally, when I sat down to write my first book, When I Think of You–which is itself a romance novel about making a romance film–I wanted to create something that felt just like the Black love stories that made me a hopeless romantic in the first place. One that evoked the chemistry and longing my favorite artists sang about, and that featured the vibrantly authentic characters that have been immortalized in movies and on TV. In that same spirit, I’ve compiled a list of some of my favorite romance novels written by Black authors, and the classic films and TV shows to pair them with based on vibes alone.

Vibe: When you find ‘the one’ but seemingly never at the right time…

Queen Move by Kennedy Ryan & Sylvie’s Love (Film, Dir. Eugene Ashe, 2020)

Read this contemporary romance that features a seering take on the childhood friends to lovers trope which brings us on an angst-filled journey of two soulmates with the worst timing–much like the gorgeously lyrical film Sylvie’s Love which, set in the 1960’s, highlights a “right person-wrong time” connection between a deeply conflicted woman who is soon to be wed and the jazz musician who swept her off her feet.

If there’s one thing I love in life—or at least on the page, it’s a second chance romance. There’s something about the mix of regrets, nostalgia, and the opportunity to right some lovelorn wrongs that just makes my brain short-circuit and my heart leap a thousand bounds. While I don’t actually know many second-chance romances that have worked in real life (though we’ve all given it our best shot at one point or another, am I right?), in a novel, they never fail to deliver an absolutely satisfying happily ever after. Maybe that’s why I can’t stop writing them —in my latest novel, Take Two, Birdie Maxwell, my heroine begrudgingly takes a road trip with her high school crush, and in my last novel, The Rewind, two acrimonious college exes wake up in bed together with no memory of how they got there. Not necessarily circumstance we aspire to in our actual love lives, but that’s the magic of great romcoms with winning characters: no matter what the baggage, you root for those two crazy kids to find a way to make it work and live happily ever after.

SAME TIME NEXT SUMMER by Annabel Monaghan

Honestly, I will read every single thing that Annabel Monaghan writes until the end of time. And Same Time Next Summer is no exception. Send one semi-happily engaged lady back to her family beach house (to plan her wedding, naturally), and put her on a collision course with the boy (now a man!) who wrecked her heart as a teenager, and you have the delicious makings of this second chance romance. Add in Monaghan’s sharp-shooting wit and writing, and just don’t blame me if you neglect your work and family to turn page after page.

FUNNY YOU SHOULD ASK by Elissa Sussman

Take one down on his luck movie star and pair him with a journalist whose last profile of the star made her famous in her own right and reunite them ten years later for another interview (and possible one-night stand – or longer). This book is one of my favorite romcoms in recent memory. The chemistry between the characters absolutely crackles, and Sussman’s dialogue and writing leap off the page. I stayed up well into the early morning hours devouring this one.

KISS HER ONCE FOR ME by Alison Cochrun

After a ho-hum engagement, our heroine takes a trip home with her fiancé for the holidays, only to discover that she had a previous fling with his sister, who she may or may not like more than the man who proposed. OMG. So juicy. I love a second chance romance that is pure mess, and this one is so messy and so simultaneously delightful. An absolute gem that will have you screaming and cringing and cheering.

EVERY SUMMER AFTER by Carley Fortune

I think everyone I know has already devoured this one because it topped so many bestseller charts but I loved it so much that I have to implore the remaining hold-outs to dive in. Set over six years, Every Summer After captures that perfect blend of love, heartbreak, nostalgia and a whole lot of that intangible magic that makes two fictional character feel totally real. Ughhh, it was so real and so so good.

BEFORE I LET GO by Kennedy Ryan

I’ve read multiple Ryan books, and I think she is a master at unraveling real life circumstances that gut you and then put you back together, all in three hundred pages. Here, she tackles divorce and regret, and masterfully brings one couple back from the brink, as they wade through child-rearing, lingering attraction and overcoming all the obstacles that life can throw at you. Ryan’s writing always sizzles, and her books genuinely never disappoint.

WHAT YOU DO TO ME by Rochelle Weinstein

Weinstein was inspired by the song “Hey there, Delilah,” and wrote a swoony, romantic book about the story behind the song. In this version, a journalist with her own bruised heart tracks down both the musician and the song’s subject, and carefully, tenderly finds a way to lead them back to happily ever after. Perfect for anyone who loves love and loves music. (So all of us.)

SEVEN DAYS IN JUNE by Tia Williams

Let me start with the tag line because it encapsulates this book better than I could. Seven days to fall in love, 15 years to forget, and seven days to get it all back again…I mean…Sign. Me. Up. Williams’ novel dives into the entanglements and complications of two writers who were once high school sweethearts, and whose paths, naturally (and a little begrudgingly), find their way back to each other. The characters wrestle with some very real-world problems, which I appreciated, and Williams’ writing pops off the page and punctures your heart simultaneously.

It doesn’t matter whether you’ve devoured the books or seen Keira Knightley running through a field, sporting a bonnet and petticoats or not—everyone knows something about or at least has heard of Jane Austen. Her literature can be seen in modern adaptations, such as Clueless (1995) or parodied in Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001), there are tours of the homes she lived in, theories over her love life, and her face is even on the ten-pound note. Since her death, Austen has become a character in herself. So, in our modern times of technology, socially acceptable showing of the ankles, and Harry Styles, who is our new “Jane Austen”?

Well, the name of this article is misleading because simply there cannot be another Jane Austen as her cultural impact remains her own and there can never be someone whose career and life align perfectly with her. We will never have another Austen, just as we will never have another Shakespeare or Chaucer, however, that does not mean we will not have ground-breaking romance and contemporary novelists following in the steps of our beloved writer. Brilliant in their own right, we’ve rounded up just a few stellar authors!

EMILY HENRY

Do you want friends to lovers? Or is enemies to lovers more of your cup of tea? Do you love fiction about people that also love fiction? Emily Henry is your gal. The queen of the summer romance novel, Henry keeps delivering bangers of a novel time and time again. The stories she continuously creates and has you devouring will undoubtedly leave you smiling and giddy. Henry has currently written three novels, Book Lovers (2022), Beach Read (2020), and People We Meet on Vacation (2021). Her newest book Happy Place released in April.

SALLY ROONEY

Now if you’re looking for something that has the intimacy of an Austen novel and the societal observations of an Austen novel, but without the required happily ever after, Sally Rooney is the author for you. Rooney rocketed to authorial fame through her novel Normal People, which looked at the lives of two teenagers and how society and class identities get in the way of their love for one another. Think, Marianne in Sense and Sensibility without the charming Colonel Brandon to come and eclipse her love John Willoughby. Rooney has three published novels under her belt, two of which have been turned into TV shows of the same name—Normal People (2018), Conversations with Friends (2017) and Beautiful World, Where are You (2021).

TAYLOR JENKINS REID

This is a must-read author for cinema and TV fans with multiple of her works currently being adapted for screen and TV. Taylor Jenkins Reid is a powerhouse, who is constantly working on mastering different types of genres—all under the umbrella of contemporary fiction. If you’re looking for some heartwrenching romance, Reid has books such as One True Loves (2016), which has just been released starring the magnificent Phillipa Soo, and Forever Interrupted (2013). Or if you’re a fan of Fleetwood Mac and all the drama that went into the fabric of their music, you should try Daisy Jones and the Six (2019), which released earlier this year on Prime Video.

It would take an entire article to go through all of Reid’s wonderful novels, but the one that prompted the Taylor Jenkins Reid fan frenzy was the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo (2017), also in production to be become a film. Evelyn Hugo will leave you believing in love again and crushed to the core, Mr Darcy is nothing compared to Cecilia St. James, but he’s a whole lot better than Mick Riva.

TIA WILLIAMS

As many an literature teachers will tell you, Austen’s characters were complex. You just needed to look at the details of what they did and spoke. Tia William’s takes these romantic, flawed, three dimensional characters and gives them space to express themselves beyond implications and connotations. Williams has written and published six books, her two most famous books being Seven Days in June (2021) and The Perfect Find (2016), which is being turned into a movie. Her beautiful work gives romance to the everyday person. She does not gloss over the character’s issues and she does not make that a reason for them not to deserve a happy ending because, after all, everyone deserves a happy ending.

HOLLY BOURNE

One aspect of Austen’s novels that are often ignored is the female sisterhood that is promoted. Think of Anne Elliot in Persuasion, who is always there for her sister Mary and shows no hostility towards Louisa and Henrietta whilst they flirt with the man she loves. Holly Bourne takes this sisterhood and focus on female friendships and turns it up to the max. In her novels we have the romantic love story, but what really shines in Bourne’s writing is the platonic friendships and their importance in our lives. She brings to centre stage the beauty that is friendship and celebrates all its iniquities. Plus, her books are wonderfully and promotingly feminist, an extra bonus. The Spinster Club Trilogy is a brilliant place to start when reading Bourne’s work as you follow a trio making their way through college and discovering themselves in the least cliché ways imaginable. 

SARA DESAI

Another aspect of Austen’s novels which literature teachers will sing about is that her novels are funny. Yes, some of her jokes do not translate as well in modern day and often they fall flat in comparison to the works of Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Romesh Ranganathan, but she is funny. A brilliant romance author, who prioritises the comedic aspects of her novel with the intimate moments of her novel is Sara Desai. Sara Desai’s most popular works are The Dating Plan (2021), The Marriage Game (2020) and The Singles Table (2021). Desai gives us funny, sexy female protagonists that make us laugh and leaves us applauding when they get their man. She also constantly provides a fun, enjoyable family dynamic that helps push the story forward and creates a more enjoyable reading experience.

So, here are six wonderful female identifying authors who are taking the romance genre by storm. They may not be Austen, they are their own magnificent selves and have done and will do amazing things within the genre or whatever genres they decide to explore next. And just remember, if anyone tries to shame you for reading romance novels, remember people once did the same to the original readers of Austen’s work. Look who’s laughing now!

I love me a good, old-fashioned listicle, especially a bookish one in time for the hottest (at least in the Northern Hemisphere) quarter of the year: who has time to read chunky blocks of words when you’re zipping out to soak up the precious sun, a cold brew in one hand and aviators in another? Not you! Certainly not me either, but then again I live in the tropics, and we’re blasé about the sun. What we yearn for instead is the sweet embrace of snow, gently enveloping all the mosquitoes around us in slow, horrible, unpreventable deaths.

Anyway, where was I? Yes, for all of you anticipating summer, here’s my listicle, or an article craftily masquerading as a listicle, of all of my must-read beach reads, both current titles and backlisted ones, broken down by category with barely any plot details to help you out. So sue me, I’m a vibes girl. You’re welcome anyway.

THE LIST!

Transportive Contemporary Romance: Where We End and Begin by Jane Igharo: Lagos becomes a sizzling backdrop to a beautiful second-chance romance that also serves up a side helping of family drama.

‘Destroy me’ romance/women’s fiction: The Heart Principle by Helen Hoang: delicately wrought, beautifully fleshed out love story with a timely spotlight on burnout in the age of social media, and layered ASD rep.

Contemporary fiction featuring a woman who feels trapped by her life: Fault Lines by Emily Itami: an affair in metropolitan Tokyo unfurls to shimmering prose you can snap your fingers to. Also, Sorrow and Bliss by Meg Mason: Funny, poignant, layered, heartbreakingly wonderful, of a woman’s (and her family’s) experience of an unnamed mental illness.

Contemporary fiction with a polarising lead: Milk Fed by Melissa Broder. Melissa Broder’s writing, like most port-novelists, grips. Compelling, erotic and honest, it follows a young woman obsessed with her diet who becomes smitten with a froyo scooper. Bonus: Woman, Eating by Claire Kohda: a mixed-race millennial vampire dreams of eating human food—and more.

Suspenseful general adult/Women’s fiction: At Least You Have Your Health by Madi Sinha: Shady wellness business, impressionable doctor-mom, witty dialogue, Liane-Moriarty energy and pacing.

Heart-warming Fantasy: The House On The Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune: I’ve never called a book ‘delightful’ until I read this.  A cozy hug of a fantasy book.

‘Hear me Roar’ Fantasy: She Who Became The Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan: punchy, cinematic, brilliant.

‘Destroy me’ young adult romance: You’ve Reached Sam by Dustin Thao: Bring tissues and cancel your weekend.

Clever, compelling middle grade murder mystery from SE Asia: Queen of The Tiles by Hanna Alkaf: Hanna, who’s Malaysian like me, is the queen of fierce, character-driven writing. Twisty and fun, with great hijabi rep.

Folkloric middle grade from SE Asia: Mist Bound by Daryl Kho: Atmospheric, touching, richly illustrated and written, featuring folktales from this part of the world.

Funny, fun contemporary romance: The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood. Chemistry of the best kind.

General adult/women’s fiction exploring identity and culture:  Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows by Balli Kaur Jaswal.

Moving Bildungsroman:  Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart: heartrending, utterly memorable from its first line.

Thriller, ish: Girl A by Abigail Dean: suspenseful and heart-breaking, it lingers.

Quiet, meditative fiction: Brood by Jackie Polzin: Wry observational humour, surprising, tender, with no fowl play (sorry! I couldn’t resist the pun!)

Sheer chaotic genre-bending fun: Dial A for Aunties by Jesse Q. Sutanto. She took all my Asian auntie nightmares, added murder, and somehow made it LOL. Sorcery.

Sheer romance: Seven Days in June by Tia Williams: Exuberant, sexy, funny, and just absolutely smashing. Also, The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren.

Pure joyful, romcom escapism: Twelve Days in May by Niamh Hargan: Witty, delicious Cannes escapism. Also, On a Night like this by Lindsey Kelk: Nobody writes romcom like Lindsey.

Meta beach reads: Beach Read by Emily Henry. All the feels, all the prose, the angst, the banter.

A modern classic to cherish and re-read: The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy: prepare to have the map of your literary world re-drawn.                        

Bonus category (auto-read writers): Am I even Asian if I don’t throw this in? And it’s a two-fer!

Short story collections: Anything by George Saunders

Think about it for a moment. Be honest with yourself. Would you take the chance? Or would it be too painful to revisit the past, the reasons it didn’t work out the first time around? Would the flame even still be there?

Tia Williams has created the perfect balance of romance and heat, tension and desire, humour and relevant social context. This novel is sexy and smart. The characters are complex, not canned or one-dimensional. The pop culture references are timely and often hilarious. And the commentary on current issues (like the publishing industry’s tendency to focus on stories which centre the suffering of Black characters, for example) is spot on.

Overall, Seven Days in June is an uplifting yet realistic romance, in the sense that we all have our own history, but this history does not have to define us. Life is too short to live in the past, after all; we must find a way to move on. And Williams explores whether Eva and Shane can do just that. Can they forgive each other and move forward? Is there even something real left between them to move forward towards? You’ll just have to read the book and find out for yourself!
