About This Monster of Mine (released 1 April 2025): A dazzling Ancient Rome-inspired romantasy debut, This Monster of Mine is a bloodbath of manipulation, deception, and forbidden love.

Morally-grey has become fantasy’s favourite colour, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Once relegated to painting antiheroes and villains, the past decade has seen a resurgence of protagonists and broody love interests all swathed in the same murky shade. Perhaps it’s the nuance in these characters or their subtle flirtation with darkness that entrances us, or perhaps we’re living our best life through them. So, whether your preference is a darker shade of heroism or full-on villainy, here’s a curated list of book and tv show character recommendations based on your favourite shade of grey.

Heavy fog blinding the skyscrapers on an overcast day = Nasir from Hafsah Faizal’s Sands of Arawiya duology

Hafsah Faizal’s exquisite debut plants a conflicted assassin and a huntress disguising her identity in the middle of a kingdom encircled by a deadly forest. Nasir is known far and wide as the Prince of Death, but he takes no pleasure in the title. The reality is that he’s the hitman for his father, the Sultan, and has had to do away with everyone his father wants gone. This isn’t a role Nasir plays willingly and one that he wishes he could escape. That chance comes when he’s sent on a mission to bring back a long-lost artifact and kill off an infamous archer known as the Hunter. Little does he know that said Hunter is the girl he’s starting to have feelings for.

Despite all the death Nasir’s dealt out, he’s an assassin with a conscience and a deeply empathetic man who fears the consequences of his father discovering that he has a heart—not to himself but to those he cares for. Faizal’s duology paints the portrait of a man struggling with what he has done and who he wants to be. He’s grey, but he never wanted the colour.

Light glinting off steel = Inej from Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows duology

Slight, reserved, and brilliant, Inej Ghafa is often considered the beating heart of The Six of Crows. She may carry fourteen knives on her person, but holds deep moral convictions about how she uses them, despite working as a spy for Kaz’s gang, the Crows. Inej’s friendship is hard won but deeply felt, and she’s violently protective of the other Crows, especially her leader and her love interest, Kaz. 

Nicknamed, the Wraith, Inej is familiar with the scent of death and has doled it out often. Yet, her motivations are always fair, and Bardugo brilliantly conveys that she only operates outside the law, because the law itself is not willing to correct injustice. She’s impossible not to love.

Seething and roiling storm clouds with snaps of lightning = Galadriel from The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power

To call Galadriel a hothead in her younger years would be the understatement of the millennia. Long before she was the regal elven queen of LOTR fame, she was 3,400 years old and a military commander with an enemy to grind to dust—Morgoth, the orcs who formed his army, and his righthand man, Sauron (who’s going to be relevant pretty soon). And Galadriel does this so well that her elven compatriots start having difficulty distinguishing her from the evil they’re fighting.

She has a kill count higher than the population of a small country, and the fact that she’s eradicating an entire species in the name of fighting evil doesn’t entirely hit her until later on—a deliciously nuanced incorporation by the showrunners. Galadriel is vengeful, prideful, and determined to prove that she’s right to her fellow elves, but she’s also deeply compassionate, kind, and fair. All of which makes her a fascinating character, lovingly brought to life by Morfydd Clark.

Ash spewing from a volcanic eruption = Connor Rogan from Ilona Andrew’s Hidden Legacy Series

There are men, and there is Connor Rogan. Nevada Baylor, private investigator, learns that the day she takes on a run-of-the-mill assignment for a House—egomaniacal, magical dynasties with their own armies, global corporations, and deeply entrenched corruption—and runs afoul of the man who’ll change her life. Connor Rogan aka Mad Rogan earned his nickname as a military vet, and compounds it every day by keeping powerful Houses in check. As a Prime—a rare magic user with an ungodly quantity of magic—and the head of a House himself, he has it all, wealth, power, and looks. And he decides he wants Nevada.

What follows is no billionaire-seeking-to-wear-down-a-woman, but rather a game of intellect and strength between two equally matched individuals who give as good as they get. Connor is ruthless, driven, has decimated entire cities with sheer power, and is a mass murderer who thinks nothing of dropping a building on those in his way. But he’s also one of the most deeply-devoted men ever written and would drop a building on himself for Nevada in a heartbeat. Impossible not to stan.

A Chartreux cat sitting on top of your keyboard = Lanfear from The Wheel of Time

Lanfear is the very definition of “black cat energy.” Competent, power-hungry, and consistently inconsistent in her loyalties, she’s one of the thirteen Forsaken—a group of magic-users who had dedicated themselves to darkness and got themselves imprisoned for it. When released back into the world, Lanfear takes immense joy in destabilizing it and seeking out her former lover’s reincarnation thousands of years since, because she never did get over him dumping her.

Lanfear will gladly kill everything in sight between her and her goals (having the world at her feet), but she’s also hilariously petulant, gorgeous, has an incredible wardrobe, and is an occasional ally to the good guys when it suits her. She’s pretty hard to dislike. Trusting her is a terrible idea, but you can bet that she’ll make even falling off a cliff a rollicking good time.

Hornfels cliffs on a warm summer evening = The Stranger from The Acolyte

Hornfels rock is a unique sight. Smooth and fine-grained yet extremely durable, with natural striations of grey and white throughout. So is the Stranger, who could be the finest Sith Star Wars has ever seen. In addition to having a delicious penchant for wearing a mask and a voice modulator and being a ruthless killing machine, the Stranger has a hero’s quest of his own and subscribes to a philosophy that doesn’t seem too off-base.

Convinced that “the Jedi justify their galactic dominance in the name of peace,” the Stranger seeks to train a powerful acolyte of his own, who can take on the Jedi’s quasi-colonial empire and disrupt their forcible training of children to suppress emotion in the name of learning control. Is he a mass murderer who has killed innocents and corrupt Jedi alike? Absolutely. But it’s hard to dislike him when the Jedi keep proving him right by focusing more on the threat he poses rather than the evil within their ranks. And look at his arms? Who wouldn’t follow those anywhere?

Veins of galena running through granite = Kadra from This Monster of Mine

Part lead and part silver, galena is a mesmerizing mineral not unlike Drenevan bu Kadra, the enigmatic Tetrarch at the heart of my debut, This Monster of Mine. One of the four judges ruling the country and a monstrously powerful magic-user to boot, Kadra is renowned for his commitment to justice and eradicating corruption—the brutal way with beheadings and burnings. Naturally, when a rash of deaths plague the capital, Kadra becomes suspect #1. And no one is more convinced that he did it than the new prosecutor assigned to work with him: Sarai. Four years after being pushed off a tower and left for dead, Sarai is back with a new face, a new identity, and deep determination to hunt down the man responsible for her near-death. When Kadra’s voice matches the bits she remembers of her assailant’s, she’s determined to see him ruined. But nothing is truly as it seems in the capital, and Kadra may be the biggest surprise of all.

I’m quite biased about this one, but Kadra’s a lovely dark gray. Few hard lines in the way of morality? Check. A kill count in the thousands? Absolutely. Ice-cold and in control? Almost always. If you’re curious, you know where to find him!

The depths of the Fold = the Darkling from Leigh Bardugo’s Shadow and Bone trilogy

No good list of morally grey men is complete without the Darkling. Leigh Bardugo’s Shadow and Bone trilogy and Six of Crows duology hosts some of recent fiction’s most memorable characters, but none as beloved as the Darkling. General Kirigan is a Shadow Summoner and a reminder of a problem that plagues the country: the Fold—a swath of impenetrable darkness that splits the land in half and within which monstrous creatures reside.

Being descended from the man who created the Fold, the Darkling despairs of putting things to rights until he meets Alina Starkov, Shadow and Bone’s heroine, a rare Sun Summoner and who seems the answer to his every dream. But few of those dreams are benign and the Darkling keeps dangerous secrets as Alina rapidly finds out. Played to perfection by Ben Barnes in the Netflix adaptation, the Darkling is a complex, unforgettable experience, megalomania and all.

The bowels of a silver mine = Sauron fromThe Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

I could go on about hot Sauron for the next two eons, but suffice it to say that the Dark Lord is seriously smoking. Fans of The Lord of the Rings books will know that Sauron was never actually a giant eye atop a tower as depicted in the movies but rather a stunning demigod who fell from grace, and warped his body into a monstrous form during his quest for power (Sauron means “the Abhorred”). The show took that portion of the lore quite seriously.

Sauron’s as power-hungry as most of the people on this list, but for a different reason. This demigod loves order. His entire plan for world domination revolves around healing the world of chaos and misery. By taking away everyone’s free will of course, but no more war and no one has to pay for clean water. It’s quite a compelling argument at times. Sauron isn’t without some humanity, as demonstrated in the show’s depiction of the fact that he felt something for Galadriel. But his narcissism, devaluing of anyone he deems as beneath him, ruthless manipulation of everything and everyone around him, and remorseless constant murder make experiencing him like entering the depths of a silver mine. Sure, it glitters, but it’s primarily just darkness.

The ocean floor = Empire from the Foundation TV show based on the books by Isaac Asimov

If “the bar is the floor” was a person, that person would be Brother Day. Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series posits what would happen if one man, Cleon, sought to keep his rule infinite by cloning himself over and over. The result is a ruling trio of Cleon clones, also known as Empire—Brother Dawn (teenage Cleon aka emperor-in-training), Brother Day (the currently reigning Cleon), and Brother Dusk (retiree-age Cleon who serves as an advisor to Brother Day).

Of these, Brother Day, played to the hilt by the impeccable Lee Pace, is utterly magnetic. Alternatingly narcissistic, vicious, and maniacal but deeply insecure and occasionally fearful, Day is a brilliant depiction of a man who truly has it all and will do anything for more. Unlike Sauron, he has his Empire, but it’ll never be enough. The man simply is cancerous craving, and it’s still impossible to take your eyes off him. It’s no wonder he’s been called “Intergalactic Emperor Daddy.”

Described to be an era during which kingdoms rose and fell, when great powers were forged, and when a villain threatened to cover the world in darkness, the new series will follow an ensemble cast of new and familiar characters as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth.

Rick and Morty Season 6
Hulu, Out Now

They’re back (again!). The new season of the hit adult-animated show will pick up with Rick and Morty stranded in space, floating in the remnants of the citadel. Featuring killer robots and alien armies, plus a multitude of explosions (and just as many quippy comments), the trailer for the new season promises more of the violent, snarky sci-fi fun that audiences have come to love.

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5
Hulu, Out 14 September

The Emmy award-winning, dystopian drama series is back for a fifth season. The official synopsis teases a bumpy ride ahead for the characters; June (Elisabeth Moss) faces consequences for her actions after the events of last season, while the widowed Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) attempts to rise up and raise her profile. The show will return with two new episodes, after which new episodes will premiere weekly.

Do Revenge
Netflix, Out 16 September

Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, Netflix’s upcoming dark comedy film tells the story of two American high-schoolers: Drea (Camila Mendes), a queen bee dethroned after the leakage of a sex tape, and Eleanor (Maya Hawke), an unassuming new student. The pair form an unlikely friendship after agreeing to go after each other’s bullies. A twisted revenge story à la Strangers on a Train, the subverted, Hitchcockian affair also features Rish Shah (Ms. Marvel), Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones), and Austin Abrams (Dash & Lily).

Don’t Worry Darling
In Cinemas, Out 23 September

After winning several awards for her feature directional debut (the refreshingly fun coming-of-age comedy Booksmart), director Olivia Wilde has shifted genres, and helmed a twisted, psychological thriller. Don’t Worry Darling follows a 1950s housewife (Florence Pugh) who is living with her husband (Harry Styles) in an experimental town when she begins to worry that the glamorous company her husband works for may be concealing disturbing secrets. Alongside Pugh (Black Widow, Little Women) and Styles (Dunkirk), the stacked cast includes Wilde herself (Drinking Buddies), Gemma Chan (Crazy Rich Asians), KiKi Layne (Coming 2 America), and Chris Pine (Wonder Woman 1984).

Ana de Armas stars as Marilyn Monroe in Netflix’s fictionalised take on the iconic actress’ life. Written and directed by Andrew Dominik, the long-awaited psychological drama explores the split between Monroe’s public and private selves, from her volatile childhood as Norma Jean, through her rise to fame, and her romantic entanglements.

Former American President, Woodrow T. Wilson, once said that: “Friendship is the only cement that will ever hold the world together.” This quote does well in successfully capturing and highlighting the importance of friendship as a concept. which exists both in reality and in the fictional worlds which are created.

Within the world of fiction, the theme of friendship is perhaps just as crucial as the plot of the story is in the telling of the tales which we are told. The characters who we are introduced to in the stories we read, face not only the trials of the journey ahead but the joys and difficulties that come with interacting with other characters who they are introduced to, as well as the impact which these interactions have upon the evolution of their characters in turn.

Just as they do in reality, friendships in fiction spark and evolve in a variety of ways and this makes for an intriguing sight to bear witness to whether it’s on page or on screen. Some friendships are already or easily established between characters, whilst others take some time for the bond between the characters to form. No matter how the friendship came about, the trials which the friends face over the course of their journey acts not only as an obstacle to the individual(s), but to the friendships made between them. These challenges which the friends face are much like the challenges faced by friends in real life in that they – no matter how fantastical they are – help to either strengthen the bonds between them or, unfortunately, succeed in driving or tearing them apart… And so, from the undying loyalty shown by Samwise Gamgee to Frodo Baggins in Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings series to the deterioration of the friendship between Guinevere and Morgana in the BBC TV show Merlin, this exploration of a few popular fictional friendships sets to highlight just why they are in fact the most memorable.

Much like Frodo and Sam’s friendship, another dynamic duo which exists in fiction is none other than Scott McCall and Stiles Stilinski from MTV’s Teen Wolf, these two partners-in-crime are inseparable for the most part of the six seasons of the show.

Throughout the show, Scott and Stiles experience various trials and tribulations which lead to disputes of varied consequences. However, these two may not be brothers in blood but they have a connection that is impossible to miss throughout the show as they continuously resolve their differences and manage to come together again to prove that the power which the bond of friendship holds is strong enough to overcome the deadliest of obstacles.

Indeed one of the most memorable friendships from fiction known for their undying loyalty to one another during times of hardship is the friendship which exists between three iconic characters: Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley.

Known as the ‘Golden Trio’, what makes this friendship work – oddly enough – is not the similarities between these three friends, but the differences. They balance one another perfectly and are the ‘ultimate friendship goals’ both for readers of the series and even the characters, as shown in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child when Draco Malfoy, Harry’s very own school nemesis, recalls how he felt about the trio’s friendship:

Of course, when it comes to friendship, if you think three is a crowd then what about the groups who share that friendly bond in fiction? Whilst it is often portrayed on page and screen, one would think that the clash of so many personalities coming together to form a group of friends may make the strength of the bond between them weaker… how wrong that belief would be.

Take for example the Losers Club – the given name which this band of misfits adopted as their own in Stephen King’s novel IT.

If you’ve read Stephen King’s IT then you’ll know that whilst it is a horror novel telling the events surrounding the killer supernatural being known as IT, it is also a tale of friendship and strength, which bonds the characters and allows for them to overcome the most deadly of adversaries. The seven of them create a force to be reckoned with and even in adulthood, it is their friendship which shines through most of all as they return to their childhood town to battle their foe once more together.

And it’s not just the Losers Club who recognise the power which their friendship holds…

From the duo friendship of Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes to the unbreakable bonds formed between each of the Avengers’, Marvel is a fandom which explores a variety of friendships in many forms! The comic books and movies alike explore the individual characters flaws and strengths and how this in turn reflects on their interaction with those around them – particularly how friendships are formed, challenged, and even broken… One thing that Marvel does well at is also showing how those broken friendships can also be mended.

After all, friendships are no fragile thing and more often than not the people who come into the lives of the characters we read about in books and watch on screen often do for a reason and are most likely there to stay, much like the friendships formed in our reality.

Almost 20 years after The Lord of The Rings Billy Boyd, who played Pippin, reflects on his career and the impact of Peter Jackson’s trilogy.

How do you choose your roles?

As an actor, if you’re lucky enough to get any roles then that’s a good thing. If you can choose a little bit, then even better. I try and read things that are coming up and see what looks interesting. Things morph over the years as you get more and more interested in different things. There’s all different reasons but mainly it’s normally down to your ratings.

And didn’t they try to typecast you after The Lord Of The Rings?

Yeah. And still do, I think. I think every actor, or almost every actor, gets typecast a little bit.

Especially after such a big thing, right?

And because our characters were so recognizably different, because we were small, to this day casting directors think I’m four foot tall. It’s crazy.

John Rhys Davies John got it worse, because he played a dwarf.

He’s like 6’2 or something.

I looked at for example what Elijah Wood did after The Lord Of The Rings. His next roles were hooligans and a psycho killer in Sin City. He said with this: ‘I’m not a hobbit’. He played a stone-cold serial killer. Did you think about this, when those typecasts happened? Did you want to do something totally different and show them?

Well it’s different. Elijah’s got a real love for horror movies and he has his own production company that makes horror movies. I’ve never been a huge fan of that genre, so I like much more positive stories and so I never really looked for that. Although, I did play a few characters who were hard men or killers, because I think some directors and some writers like the idea of getting a hobbit on a killing spree.

And I’ve got no problem with that, but I never think of a specific character. It’s much more about story, because I came from theatre and knew about writing for theatre, it’s normally about the writing rather than me trying to find a course for my career. I’m much more about finding a good story that’s well written and just being part of that.

As you said, you started with theatre. And after The Lord of the Rings you came back to theatre.

I still love to go back and do some theatre and I know always will. In fact the last time I was in Warsaw was about 15 years ago. I was studying at the academy doing theatre, learning Russian writers like Chekhov. That was the last time I was in Poland. But it’s weird because the thing about big movies is you sort of lose a little bit of self-reliance. Everything’s done for you. Everyone takes you places. You get on a plane, you don’t know where you’re going. And then to go back to something where it’s like: ‘Get yourself here, we want you here at 10 o’clock. Can you bring your own costume?’. That kind of thing you know is actually funny?

There’s this romantic vision of actors and their job, but the reality is that you just have to sit an wait a lot between takes.

Because of the amount of time, ours is a hard job. And yeah, there’s a lot of waiting around. There’s a lot of killing time, finding ways to keep yourself amused. I like to sleep, so that’s good. But Dom Monaghan would never let me sleep, because he was always wanting to do something: play a video game or something. It’s nowhere near as glamorous as you would think.

When I’ve read about you, the thing that struck me was that you saw Star Wars and then you decided to be an actor. Was that true?

It’s sort of true. I was on a holiday vacation with my family and The Empire Strikes Back had just come out, and I watched that every day, when it was on. I just thought: ‘I want to do that’. And when I went to drama school to learn to be an actor, it was to be a movie actor. I had no interest in theatre and it’s only when I was at drama school that I got an interest in theatre. So in some ways it is true. I wanted to be in Star Wars.

And you kind of got your Star Wars, because The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and now Game of Thrones are those one-in-a-generation or even one-in-history productions that define everything. And do you see any cons in terms of that you played this role and it was at the beginning of your career?

It’s always hard because you make decisions and then that’s the path that you’re on. And there’ll be parallel universes where you didn’t have that, but you never know what it was going to be. I was quite happy in theatre and small independent films and then The Lord of Rings happened, and it takes you down a certain path. I’ll always be thankful for it, because to act, to be an actor and be part of anything that’s remembered is just great. But to be part of something that changed movie history… The Lord Of The Rings is really special. So in some ways, whatever happens, I’m happy that that.

It will be twenty years next year.

I can’t believe that. And I don’t think, in fact I know there was never a time when I resented it. There was a time when it was weird, when it was huge. And it was difficult to walk around and go on vacation or do something. And that was that was weird. I didn’t resent that. It was just like something to have at that one point in your life, to feel in a small way what it would be like to be in The Beatles or something. It was weird. And it was a few years of that. And it’s nice to be able to go on the underground again and be able to travel around.

And did you have the sense that there was a challenge to do something at least as big?

No, I never felt that I’ve got to do something bigger. As long as it is good work, as long as it feels like I’m proud of that then I don’t mind. I don’t mind if it’s a movie that eight people see, as long as the eight people thing that’s good work.

The trope of the chosen one is a well-known element in genre literature, whether you like it or not. It is also extremely common in modern media like movies and television series. Some of the most famous literary genre characters who fit this trope include King Arthur, Frodo from the Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter, but what exactly constitutes the trope of the chosen one and why is it so commonly utilised?

You’re A Wizard Harry!

“The Chosen One” trope is very similar to, and sometimes interchangeable with what in narrative theory is known as “The Hero’s Journey” or the “Monomyth”. American mythologist Joseph Campbell describes the hero’s journey like this:

A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won […] – Campbell, Joseph (1949). The Hero with a Thousand Faces.

Sounds familiar, right? Often the difference between “The Chosen One” trope and the hero in “The Hero’s Journey” is that the hero almost always has a choice. The hero assumes this role because of the active choices he or she makes to end up in certain situations. The chosen one usually has no choice in the matter at all because they are special or unique in one way or another. Although, exceptions to the rule do exist.

The chosen one is usually a person with special talents or gifts, or someone who has been marked by a prophecy or by a deity to perform a certain heroic task. In Harry’s case, he was born a wizard, which is special in and of itself, but he is also prophesied to be the only one who can defeat Lord Voldemort. In The Lord of the Rings, Frodo is chosen to carry the one ring to Mordor because he has shown a remarkable ability to resist its dark powers. In the Arthurian legend, Arthur was the only one able to pull the legendary sword from the stone, because he was destined to be the rightful king of England.

Some Love It…

According to a post made by writer Bryn Donovan, the trope of the chosen one might be so popular because it is a form of wish fulfilment. Sometimes we all feel small, like we’re not special or like we don’t matter, and her post implies that “The Chosen One” trope has the potential to supply us with hope. It can also give us the opportunity to believe that we can be special or gifted in some way too, or at the very least live vicariously through the chosen one’s adventures. I mean, how many of us didn’t grow up dreaming about secretly being a super hero, a Jedi, or a wand wielding wizard? I’m personally still waiting for my Hogwarts letter.

Often the chosen one is also an outsider. They usually have gifts or traits that set them apart from their community or the society they live in. That feeling of being different and of not fitting in is something that a large number of people deal with every day. Being able to identify with a character that is going through something similar can potentially be comforting or encouraging, and might be a contributing factor to the seemingly ever-present popularity of this trope.

Some Hate It

If you do a quick Google search on “the chosen one trope”, it becomes quite evident that a lot of people dislike it, find it to be boring, or outright hate it. The most common, negatively charged opinions which keep popping up over and over during my research was the notion that the trope is outdated, and has become unoriginal and too predictable. To be fair, there is a grain of truth to these statements as this trope is a staple of genre literature and media. It is often harder to think of a book series where the hero is not “The Chosen One”.

In an article for Fantasy Magazine, freelance writer Naamen Gobert Tilahun takes a closer look at The Chosen One and juxtaposes it with a trope he calls “The One Who Chooses”.
