There’s been countless of adaptations over the last few decades. With Percy Jackson receiving a reboot by Disney+, I thought it’d be nice to share other adaptations from books worth checking out, but this list is just the start to so many films and TV shows.

Game of Thrones

One of the hugest fandoms and what truly set television into motion was the adaptation of Game of Thrones. Written by George R. R. Martin and published in the nineties, HBO adapted it into a series in 2011. From there it attained popularity and became one of the most binge-worth shows. After its eighth season, the books are still being read, and the show is still watched. Truly, a hard adaptation to top for the next few years. 

Stand By Me

A film released in 1986 was from Stephen King’s short story collection, Different Seasons and the novella became highly regarded and published separately. Originally published as The Body, when adapted, it became Stand By Me and with a few differences compared to the book, the film still became a classic. I remember analysing it in high school and loved the film. Starring River Phoenix, who was bound to become as big as his brother. May he rest in peace.  

Crazy Rich Asians

Most people know this film as it has become an iconic romantic comedy. Written by Kevin Kwan in 2013 and its sequel, China Rich Girl in 2015—Kwan topped the New York Times Best Seller’s list multiple times. The book and movie is a pleasure to come back to repeatedly!

The Hate U Give

Appealing to young adult readers, THUG has won the Goodreads Choice Awards three times! Angie Thomas changed the norms of YA and brought out its lack of diversity. The movie itself came out in 2018 and really gave a name to Amandla Stenberg who stars in it. With the book always being in the NYT bestsellers list, the book and movie are definitely worth it. 

Little Fires Everywhere

Recently adapted by Hulu into a miniseries that released in March, Little Fires Everywhere touches on subjects like racism, privilege, wealth, family, and motherly love. The adaptation filled its potential with a minor change at the end, but it got the word across. The book written by Celeste Ng is definitely a must-read before binge-watching the show. 

Holes

A classic children’s novel published 1998 and written by Louis Sachar, the film adaptation came out in 2003 featuring actors such as Shia LaBeouf, Patricia Arquette, and Zane Holtz. The book and film became popular for its crime driven adventure story. 

Life of Pi

Written by Yann Martel and published in 2001, Life of Pi became a beautiful story for readers around the globe and then viewers when it adapted into a movie in 2012. The movie has won over ten awards and took the world by storm with how well they adapted it. Certainly a novel to look back on!

Looking For Alaska

Like any John Green novel, Looking For Alaska captured the hearts of readers when it first came out in 2005 and over the years, it has won many literary awards. After a decade and a half of trying to get the book adapted, Hulu finally bought the rights to the book and gave readers a beautiful series. 

Fight Club

First published in 1996 and written by Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Clubbecame popular for its unique plot and driven characters. Adapted in 1999, people all around the world were in for a wild ride. First rule of Fight Club. Don’t talk about it, so you must either read or watch to find out all the hype. 

Room

Written by Emma Donoghue comes the heart-breaking story of a woman raising her son in one tiny room. Jack finds the room a home while his mother sees it as a prison. Published in 2010, Room earned many awards and landed an adaptation in 2015. Starring Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay, the book and film will shatter your soul. 

There are so many books that have been adapted. This is just the beginning.

Starring Ryan Gosling (La La Land), Claire Foy (The Crown), Pablo Schreiber (American Gods), Ciarán Hinds (Red Sparrow), and Christopher Abbott (The Sinner).

Bad Times at the El Royale

Seven strangers, each with a secret to bury, meet at Lake Tahoe’s El Royale, a rundown hotel with a dark past. Over the course of one fateful night, everyone will have a last shot at redemption – before everything goes to hell. The Hate U Give

The upcoming film is based on the 2017 YA novel of the same name by debut author Angie Thomas, and it quickly became a bestseller and the winner of multiple awards with its powerful and timely story.

The film and novel follow Starr Carter, who is constantly switching between two worlds: the poor, mostly black, neighborhood where she lives and the rich, mostly white, prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Now, facing pressures from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what’s right.

Despite the film already being well-known for those who have read the book, the film gained some attention earlier this year when a video of Kian Lawley, who at the time filmed his role as Starr’s boyfriend, was seen saying the n-word multiple times in a YouTube video. 20th Century Fox announced they would recast the role and refilm, and the role was taken up by Riverdale star KJ Apa.

News has broken that YouTuber and actor Kian Lawley will no longer be starring in the film adaptation of the best-selling YA novel, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. Kian Lawley had made his start on YouTube before becoming an actor but it was his YouTube days that became the reasoning for the decision.

The video that sparked Lawley’s leave was of him saying the n-word multiple times in a video two days ago with another YouTuber. Lawley was to play Starr’s boyfriend in T.H.U.G until Fox released a statement saying,

“Due to the controversy surrounding his past comments and behaviour, Kian Lawley will no longer appear in ‘The Hate U Give’.

Lawley has now made a series of statements on his Twitter:

“if u don’t learn from ur mistakes, u can never grow as a person. i’ve learned a lot & i am grateful to have the power to change. i never want to be who i was yesterday. we’re in a constant battle to become a better version of ourselves, use ur voice as ur weapon.” [Tweet 1]

“First of all, I am deeply sorry to those that were effected by my choice of language. I understand that I am in the public eye & have many supporters, but none of my actions that took place should be supported. Words have power and can do a lot damage. I own mine and I am sorry.” [Tweet 2]

“I respect Fox’s decision to recast this role for The Hate U Give as it is an important story, and it would not be appropriate for me to be involved considering the actions of my past. I understand the impact and I have grown a lot and learned since then.” [Tweet 3]

“With that being said, I am fully aware of the mistakes I have made and strive every day to become a better me than I was yesterday. We all have a voice, whether it’s big or small, we need to use it to spread love & light. From now on, I plan to use my voice for positive change.” [Tweet 4]

Lawley has also starred in other movies including Before I Fall, which is another film adaptation of Lauren Oliver, and The Chosen. He is also starring in the television adaptation of Zac and Mia, which is scheduled for another season. However, no information about him being on the second season has been released.

Fox has also said that they will recast Lawley’s character and will reshoot scenes if at all necessary.

News: Elle Fanning has been the only casting announcement made so far and she will be playing Violet. However, the author is playing games on who she wants to play Finch on her Instagram, so we highly recommend following her! There is no set release date for the film yet.

Let It Snow by John Green, Maureen Johnson, & Lauren Myracle

Plot: A girl is supposed to go to her grandma’s house after her parents get arrested, she gets stuck on the train due to a snow storm. A group of friends try to make it to a Waffle House, in the middle of the same snow storm. A girl set’s out to find something which is later stolen from her.

News: Although this was supposed to be out in 2016, the film was pushed to November of this year. Luke Snellin, the same director from the adaption of John Green’s The Fault in our Stars, will also be directing this movie. With official date having been released or even a cast, the film looks like it will be getting pushed back once more!

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han

Plot: When Lara Jean is over a boy, she would write them a letter to tell them how much she had loved them. When those mysterious letters get sent out to all of the boys she has written to, she must live with the consequences.

News: IT IS FINALLY BECOMING A MOVIE!! They already have a full cast list, including Lana Condor (X-Men: Apocalypse) as Lara Jean and Noah Centineo (The Fosters) as Peter. Filming has also begun, but no official word on release date, although it will more than likely be around May or June next year.

Sandcastle Empire by Kayla Olson

Plot (from Goodreads): “Before the war, Eden’s life was easy—air conditioning, ice cream, long days at the beach. Then the revolution happened, and everything changed. Now a powerful group called the Wolfpack controls the earth and its resources. Eden has lost everything to them. They killed her family and her friends, destroyed her home, and imprisoned her. News: It hasn’t even been three months since this book was released and we already have news on it being turned into a film. Leonardo DiCaprio is on board to be a producer for the movie with Paramount Pictures.

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

Plot: In the middle of the Black Lives Matter movement, it is tough for Starr (Amandla Stenberg, The Hunger Games) since she is one of the few African-Americans who goes to a prep school. When she sees her friend get shot down by a police officer, heat starts to rise inside Starr.

News: Only few have been cast in the production alongside Stenberg. The director for the film is George Tillman JR (The Longest Ride) and screenwriter is Audrey Wells (A Dogs Purpose).

Dumplin’ by Julie Murphy

News: The film is well underway with casting and they have found their lead actor in Danielle Macdonald (Patty Cake$). Alongside Macdonald, Jennifer Aniston, Dove Cameron (The Descendants), Odeya Rush (The Giver), Bex Taylor-Klaus (Arrow), and Maddie Baillio (Hairspray Live!) will also star. Kristen Hahn will write (Anthem) and produce the film with Michael Costigan (Ghost in the Shell, 2017).
