Get ready for a change up in sitcoms with FOX’s The Cool Kids, which instead focuses on older characters rather than younger ones such as recent sitcoms like New Girl.

From executive producer Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), The Cool Kids is a multi-camera comedy about a rowdy, rag-tag group of friends living in a retirement community who are willing to break every rule in order to have fun – because, at their age, what do they really have to lose?

Hank (Grier) is the leader of this motley crew, a gruff, opinionated, 21^st century Archie Bunker who will go to any lengths to have a good time. His loyal, but less than helpful, friends include Charlie (Mull), a bumbling wanderer who constantly goes off on tangents about some bizarre, barely believable episode from his life; and SID (Jordan), a fun-loving hedonist with a flair for the melodramatic. Complicating matters is MARGARET (Lawrence), a brash, confident woman who forces her way into their group and refuses to leave because she’s not going to take crap from anyone – especially not these three.

But what unites them all is their shared belief that they’re not done yet – not by a long shot. Growing old with dignity is for chumps. These self-proclaimed “cool kids” are determined to make the third act of their lives the craziest one yet.

The new series was inspired by Day’s time working in a nursing home. At the TCA’s, he mentioned he watched a lot of Golden Girls to inform his creative process. He also believes that while growing up, shows like Golden Girls also played to younger audiences as well.

“I thought why isn’t anyone doing this now? I beat Chuck Lorre. There was a conversation with the network about putting younger characters in, and I said ‘That’s ridiculous!’ The braver thing was that I stuck to my guns and didn’t force young characters (in the show). Fox was kind enough to relent to my yelling.”

The Cool Kids is produced by 20^th Century Fox Television, in association with FX Productions and 3 Arts Entertainment. Charlie Day, Patrick Walsh (2 Broke Girls) and Nick Frenkel (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) are executive producers. Emmy Award winner Don Scardino (30 Rock) directed the pilot.

Starring Tony Award nominee David Alan Grier (The Carmichael Show), Award nominee Martin Mull (Veep), Emmy Award winner Vicki Lawrence (The Carol Burnett Show), and Emmy Award winner Leslie Jordan (Will and Grace).

The Cool Kids premieres Friday September 28th at 8:30pm on FOX.

FOX Releases Trailers For New TV Shows

The trailers for 2018’s upcoming new TV shows continue to roll out with FOX releasing four trailers for their new TV shows. Among the trailers is the TV adaptation of Justin Cronin’s best-selling trilogy The Passage, along with a few comedies and a new legal drama.

The Passage

The Passage is an epic, character-driven thriller about a secret government medical facility experimenting with a dangerous virus that could either cure all disease or cause the downfall of the human race. The series focuses on a 10-year-old girl named Amy Bellafonte (Saniyya Sidney, Hidden Figures), who is chosen to be a test subject for this experiment, and Brad Wolgast (Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Nobodies), the federal agent who becomes her surrogate father as he tries to protect her. Brianne Howey, Vincent Piazza (Boardwalk Empire), Jamie McShane (Scorpion), Caroline Chikezie (The Shannara Chronicles), and Emmanuelle Chriqui also star.

Proven Innocent

A legal drama set in a wrongful-conviction firm. Led by a fierce and fearless female lawyer (Rachelle Lefevre, Under The Dome) with a hunger for justice, the team reopens investigations, putting their own lives in danger to exonerate the innocent that were ‘proven’ guilty. Our lead’s motivation comes from her infamous past; as a young adult she was found guilty and later exonerated in a high-profile case in which she became a tabloid sensation, household name, and national celebrity. While a hero and a victim to some, her bold and bullish tactics garner her some enemies — one of whom will do anything to see her go down for a crime we know she did not commit. We will watch her defend others as she fights to maintain her own innocence. Russell Hornsby (Grimm), Nikki M. James (The Good Wife), Vincent Kartheiser (Mad Men), Riley Smith (Life Sentence), and Clare O’Connor also star.

Rel

In a setup that’s inspired by his real life, Howery plays Lil Rel, a prideful, self-made success who lives by the code to “always believe in yourself and great things will come.” He finds that attitude put to the test when he learns his wife is having an affair with his own barber. He tries to rebuild his life post-divorce as a long-distance single father on the South Side of Chicago who’s on a quest for love, respect, and a new barber. Sinbad, Jordan L. Jones, and Jessica “Jess Hilarious” Moore also star.

The Cool Kids

Three guy friends in a retirement community are the top dogs until they’re blown out of the water by the newest member of the community — a female rebel who’s ready to challenge their place. It’s high school with seventysomethings. The project stars comedy veterans Vicki Lawrence, David Alan Grier, Leslie Jordan, and Martin Mull.
