What a beautiful thing Pride Month is. It’s an entire month dedicated to acknowledging and celebrating love, identity, and sexuality in all its forms and flavors. It’s a pause in the middle of the year to uplift love and community. Pride is also a protest. It’s a radical declaration that everyone has a write to love whoever and however they want, to express themselves fully, and be told they are worthy, that they belong, that they are loved. In a time when queer folx rights to simply exist are under daily attack (as of writing this, there are 530 anti-LGBTQ+ bills in the US being tracked by the ACLU) and our access to books telling queer stories are being threatened at an alarming rate through book bans and censorship, it is more crucial than ever to advocate for queer communities and uplift marginalized voices, and one joyful way to engage with that is by reading queer romance novels that celebrate love, identity, and happily-ever-afters for everyone. Below are six (out of many) of my most beloved queer romances that I think everyone should pick up.

Take a Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert

Talia Hibbert is one of my all-time favorite romance authors, every page of her books making swoon or laugh or cry… or all three at once, but Dani Brown, in my humble opinion, is Hibbert’s best character. Dani is unapologetically brilliant, gorgeous, and emotionally removed. But nothing could’ve prepared her guarded heart for Zaf, the hopeless romantic that upends her cool, detached bubble. The bisexual and ADHD rep in this book was so beautifully done, and I guarantee this book will leave you giggling and kicking your feet

A Shore Thing by Joanna Lowell

I cut my teeth on historical romances and it easily my most-read romance sub-genre, so I can safely say that Joanna Lowell is one of the best in the game. A Shore Thing is a tender, gentle, and decadent romance about Kit, a trans, unreformed rake who’s decision to leave a life that didn’t fit and embrace his true identity has also left him unable to paint/express himself creatively. No matter! He’ll spend his days selling bicycles and fooling around with Victorian vacationers at the shore. Enter Muriel, a firecracker of a woman that needs Kit’s artistic help. The pair strike up a deal and spend a summer of scorching intimacy and heart wrenching vulnerability.

The Queer Principals of Kit Webb by Cat Sebastian

Some books I’ll borrow from the library, read the first two pages, then rush out and buy my own copy because I know it will be one that I’ll be re-reading over and over again. This is one of those books. Unfairly clever and hilarious, this book is essentially “be gay, do crimes, eat the rich, Georgian style,” and I find that very sexy. When Kit, a reluctantly retired highwayman, is solicited for a little thievery by a desperate aristocrat, he agrees to teach the highborn some tricks of the trade, and they both lose their hearts along the way. This book is not only enthralling and witty, but it takes a close look at dismantling systems of oppression and never shies away from discussions about wealth disparity, disabilities, and queer joy.

Finding Joy by Adriana Herrera

I’m not sure there could be a more fitting title for this perfect MM romance because it will leave you with the biggest smile on your face and the consuming rush that we all hope for from our romance novels. I think what makes Herrara an expert at her craft is her ability to layer her characters and make them so profoundly real and nuanced, which results in a queer love story that does not shy away from the difficulties the main characters face, especially Elias who has been forced into the closet for fear his family and community won’t accept him as a queer person, but these roadblocks to their happy ending are handled with so much care, it never feels like an element is added for the sake of drama but instead to show the power of love between two people and the freedom that comes with living honestly and proudly as your truest self.

Ladies in Hating by Alexandra Vasti

If Alexandra Vasti writes it, I’ll be reading it, no questions asked. But a sapphic gothic historical romance by Alexandra Vasti? I actually do have a question: HOW DARE YOU WRITE THE BOOK OF MY DREAMS MS. VASTI?? Ladies in Hating is one of those books that had me hooked from the first page, and left me wanting to light my laptop on fire because the story and prose is that good. Rival authors Georgianna and Cat find themselves trapped in a spooky manor, and lots of moaning ensues (of the creepy and sensual variety because this book has range).

Greta & Valdin by Rebecca K. Reilly

While this book was not technically marketed as a genre romance to my knowledge, it is perhaps one of the gayest books I’ve ever read filled to the brim with happy endings for all, and so it counts in my head and deserves a spot on any romance reader’s shelf. Greta & Valdin chronicles the antics of the queer, chaotic titular siblings as they navigate love, identity, and what it means to find fulfillment in life. This story has stuck with me for years, and every character in this story feels like family in a way I’ve never experienced from a book before. The choices Gret and Valdin make are messy and outrageous as they navigate adulthood, and their dialogue and observations are some of the funniest writing I’ve ever encountered.

Ruth Kabbah is the town pariah in Ravenswood; she is generally disliked and bullied by most of the residents, so she doesn’t have many friends and tends to avoid unnecessary social interactions. That is, until Evan, a handsome blacksmith, moves in next-door and starts to break down the walls that Ruth has put up. Unlike the rest of the town, Evan doesn’t want to gossip about or shun Ruth. Instead, he seems to enjoy talking about comic books and insists on bringing her homecooked meals, however Ruth’s traumatic past with the town’s “golden boy” causes her to be wary of her growing feelings for Evan.

A Girl Like Her is the first book in the Ravenswood series of interconnected smalltown romances. It deals with themes and topics like autism, racism, reputation, abuse and harassment, family, parental illness, friendship, secrets and lies, trust, loneliness and isolation, social standing, guilt, self worth, appearance versus reality, gossip, infidelity, and military life. A Girl Like Her is perfect for fans of forced proximity romances like Give Me Butterflies by Jillian Meadows, Into the Woods by Jenny Holiday, No More Secrets by Lucy Score, In Your Dreams by Sarah Adams, and Fall I Want by Lyra Parish.

A Girl Like Her has been on my TBR list for a while now and I’m so glad that it is being rereleased as a deluxe edition as it gave me an excuse to finally pick it up. The book took a while to get going, but once it did, it became much more engaging to read. Ruth’s ASD and quirky, comic book-loving personality were super relatable; Evan and Ruth’s “friends/neighbours to lovers” relationship was super swoony and spicy. I loved how Evan was super patient and sweet with Ruth and that he formed his own opinions, instead of believing the town’s horrible false impressions of Ruth. I also appreciated that A Girl Like Her introduced a few of the other main characters in future Ravenswood books, as I feel like that will make the series flow nicely as a whole.

I’ve read quite a few of Talia Hibbert’s books in the past and, even though I enjoyed A Girl Like Her, some of her other books, such as her Brown Sisters trilogy, were a better read. Furthermore, much of the plot in A Girl Like Her revolved around Ruth’s toxic ex and the bullying that Ruth endures, which was challenging to read in tandem with Ruth and Evan’s budding relationship.

A Girl Like Her is perfect for fans of spicy smalltown and forced proximity romances. I’m excited to see what’s up next for Talia Hibbert—I previously enjoyed her romantasy book Mating the Huntress and I’ve heard that she’s been working on another fantasy book, so I’m definitely watching out for that one!

A Girl Like Her is available from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org, and other good book retailers, like your local bookstore, as of March 3rd 2026.

Synopsis

She’s hard to hold onto, but he’s good with his hands…

Prickly, autistic, and shadowed by a scandalous past, Ruth Kabbah will always be Ravenswood’s black sheep. It’s a lonely life, but at least it’s safe… until Evan Miller comes to town.

Calm, confident, and instantly accepted by their small English town, Evan is Ruth’s opposite in every way―yet he meets her suspicion with a smile, handles her awkwardness with ease, and watches her with a hunger that threatens to tear down her all her defenses.

The gossips want to know how she’s bewitched him. Ruth just wants to know when he’ll get bored and leave. Because if there’s one thing she’s learned, it’s that girls like her don’t get happily ever afters.

But when a monster from Ruth’s past comes back to haunt her, she’s forced to make a choice: should she trust Evan completely? Or is her heart safest alone?

She loves writing about messy women, platonic and romantic love, and happily ever afters.

Erin lives in the PNW with her spouse, two large dogs, two lazy cats, and more houseplants than she can count. When not exploring fictional worlds, she enjoys hiking, cooking, emo nostalgia, and slowly but surely actualizing her lifelong goal of becoming a forest witch.

About Unromance (out Jan 14, 2025): A recently dumped TV heartthrob enlists a jaded romance novelist to ruin romance for him—one rom-com trope at a time—so he never gets swept off his feet again . . .

My upcoming debut novel, Unromance, is a love letter to rom-coms, celebrating all the tropes and cliches that readers have come to know, love, and expect. Each chapter of Unromance begins with a trope definition, and I wanted to pay my respects to some of the authors that inspired me, as well as books that excelled at making these tropes their own, making the familiar feel both fun and fresh. Here are a few of my favorite rom-coms that live rent free:

The Meet Cute
The love interests meet. It’s cute. It upends their entire lives.

The One-Night Stand
Romance math dictates that the less likely a character is to have a one-night stand, the more likely they are to run into said one-night stand again.

Business or Pleasure by Rachel Lynn Solomon

I respect Solomon for writing a one-night stand that’s bad, actually. I respect her even more for writing the sex lessons trope where the female main character is the expert, with a male main character that is very eager to learn. This book contains one of the hottest first kisses I’ve ever read and should be studied.

But when they run into each other again, they realize they can help each other: she can cure him of the hopeless romanticism that keeps landing him in the tabloids, and in return, he can use it to help her with her writer’s block. Surely, acting out romance tropes together won’t have them hurtling towards a happily ever after neither of them saw coming.

Guest post written by To A Darker Shore author Leanne Schwartz
Leanne Schwartz is the author of A Prayer for Vengeance. She has spent her life at either the library or the local theater, where she has played Lady Macbeth, Lady Capulet, Clytemnestra, and Hera—perhaps one reason she writes such vengeful, murderous girls. When she’s not teaching English and poetry, she can be found baking pizzelle, directing scenes for the student Shakespeare festival, and singing along to showtunes. She lives in California with her family.

About To A Darker Shore: Dante’s Inferno meets the mythic atmosphere of Hadestown in this darkly romantic, tale from the author of A Prayer for Vengeance, featuring two autistic protagonists—Alesta, a plus-size inventor, and Kyrian, her best friend and heir to the throne.

My first exposure to the concept of autism was in a book: Baby-sitters Club #32: Kristy and the Secret of Susan. But it would be many years before learning I was autistic myself. I remember being fascinated but confused by Ann M. Martin’s description of Susan (based on her work with autistic children and made with every good intention), and considered it just one of the never-ending stream of books I devoured while hiding away from other people (hello, hyperlexia). Any later stories I read with autistic characters were vanishingly few and always written by neurotypical authors, similar to the examples of autistic characters in film and television that presented a very narrow, often inaccurate, view of autistics—always male, white, and robotically cold, if not utterly cut off from the rest of the world. No wonder it took so long for me to finally discover my own autism, with only that to go by. And some of the most egregious examples are still on our shelves and screens now, as anyone who’s seen the memes of the infantilized, “for some reason autism makes me a bigot” Good Doctor knows.

April is Autism Awareness/Acceptance Month, but most people’s awareness of autism remains based on these sorts of media depictions, which has a real impact on how we’re accepted—or not—out in the world.

Fortunately, a burgeoning number of books by autistic authors are offering us more authentic and varied autistic experiences on the page, excitingly more in more in fantasy. I’ve gone from head-canoning Lazlo in Laini Taylor’s Strange the Dreamer and Rook in Margaret Rogerson’s An Enchantment of Ravens to not being able to keep up with all the books coming out with stated autistic representation. (Rogerson has even confirmed her Vespertine is neurodivergent.) The growth isn’t surprising, with a threefold increase in diagnosis nationally the past few years, but with many autistics still being missed (Black autistics typically take years longer to get a diagnosis, and as many as 80% of girls go undiagnosed), who can say that books by autistic authors won’t be what sets undiagnosed autistics on the path to finally naming, understanding, and managing their experiences better? Or what helps other readers gain insight into all the nuance of what life is really like for autistics?

So if you’re inspired this Autism Acceptance Month (and beyond, I hope!) to read some actually autistic books, here are my personal recommendations, admittedly shaped by my preference for fantasy, romance, and angst balanced with triumph.

The Spirit Bares Its Teeth by Andrew Joseph White

Autistic, trans Silas finds himself trapped by Victorian social expectations for young ladies blessed or cursed with violet eyes and the ability to speak across the Veil with the world of spirits. Wanting nothing more than to escape arranged marriage and ply his skills as a surgeon, Silas is diagnosed with Veil sickness and sent to a finishing school where ghosts of murdered girls beg for his help. White’s book is full of building horror at the insidiousness and all-too-mundane evils of the patriarchy, but also shows where both autistic and trans communities find each other even in the darkest places (and makes readers or at least me feral over Silas and Daphne’s supportive relationship, along with a standout supporting cast of complicated girls).

I adore how Spirit shows how there have always been trans and autistic people in every era, and touches upon the theme of autistics often being valued only for how they can be exploited; Silas is sought after for his ability to produce heirs with his magical abilities, but forbidden from practicing them himself, which stirred up all my feelings about how those with “autistic superpowers” that can serve capitalism are most accepted by neurotypicals. I was rooting for Silas to take his scalpel to the entire pack of Speakers, swept along as he plunged into all the horrors of enforced girlhood and autistic masking. This young adult book is brutal and bloody and and an absolute page-turner.

Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett

Oh, Emily. I adore the autistic heroine of this fantasy that teeters enchantingly between cozy and folk horror in the wintery northern reaches where Cambridge scholar Emily has traveled to study faeries in person. The book grows only more charming with the arrival of rival scholar Wendell Bambleby, his mysterious connection to the faeries, and his obvious-to-everyone-but-Emily affections for the curmudgeonly researcher.

Emily’s a genius academic but struggles with people, and her irritation with Wendell’s ease among the townsfolk—as well as his lack of academic rigor—offer endless delight as together the two must save the town from encroaching supernatural threats.

This adult fantasy book conjures up darker moments than I expected, delving into stories of lost children, stolen lovers, and banished fae royalty, adding a rich atmosphere to the humor found in its banter, Emily’s foibles chopping wood and talking to other people (which goes almost worse than the near-dismemberment), and Wendell’s obsession with proper tailoring. I’m eagerly looking forward to reading the next in the series.

Act Your Age, Eve Brown, by Talia Hibbert

This contemporary adult romcom is the book I yell at everyone to read if they want to understand what it’s like to be autistic. So many times upon first reading this book (it’s one of my top comfort rereads—the audiobook is fantastic), I had to set down my e-reader and take a minute because it captured so precisely one of my own experiences, putting onto the page something I’d never seen included in any form of media, putting into words something formative about my relationships I’d never even crystalized in my own understanding—not only in romance but friendships and family.

This is what I love about reading autistic books: finding those experiences that made us feel so other and apart are actually commonalities among autistics. And that’s why I love how both heroine Eve Brown, seeking a way to prove to her family and herself she can get a job and get her life together, and hero Jacob Wayne, who’s desperately seeking a cook for his B&B, until Eve runs into him with her car, are autistic.

Their love story demonstrates both the variety of autistic experiences—fat, purple-haired Eve is intuitive and stims by singing, bespectacled Jacob is deliciously starchy and buttoned-up. And it dramatizes how, while autistics may be seen as having deficits in communication and relationships in the view of neurotypicals, when they find each other the connection can be easier, deeper, and more affirming than any other. Jacob was diagnosed as a child, while Eve’s arc includes discovering her own autism, her late self-diagnosis and the way it helps her better understand herself and navigate her relationships something bound to be very relatable among many readers. And this book is both funny and hot as hell, full of hilarious banter over the best way to feed a B&B owner with a broken arm, hijinks of fighting waterfowl and falling into ponds, and both characters slowly losing their minds over each other and their tight (ironed) jeans or obnoxious orange lipstick. (This autistic may not be able to handle spicy food, but the spice in this book gets all my stars.)

The dual perspectives enhance the romance, as the story moves from Eve and Jacob’s initial antagonism, to surprising friendship between two people who’ve mostly been ignored or considered “too much” by others, to scenes so steamy they should be curling the pages. Just trust me and read this so we can all be completely normal about Eve and Jacob together.

Unseelie by Ivelisse Housman

I was so excited when I saw a book announced with autistic representation in young adult fantasy, which artfully plays with the theory that fae changelings are in fact autistic children. Iselia “Seelie” Graygrove and her twin sister are on the run, getting by as thieves, until a heist goes awry as they encounter an adorable redheaded shapeshifter and a misfit healer—and trouble with a magical compass. They team up to go after the fae treasure it points to, a search that leads them closer to secrets of the fae and entails Seelie learning to control her magic.

I enjoyed how Seelie’s struggle to manage her powers mirrors many autistics’ experiences with sensory overwhelm and regulation. The story is so good at weaving together classic aspects of fantasy resonant with autism and literal explorations of Seelie’s neurodivergence on the page.

Overall this is the kind of book that evokes your favorite childhood fantasy reads while delivering fresh takes on those tropes. Again, it’s so heartening to see a charismatic, humorous love interest taken with an autistic heroine. Plus, there’s a magical cat! And we’re getting the conclusion to this duology, Unending, this summer.

Daniel, Deconstructed by James Ramos

Just as Unseelie gives us classic fantasy with an autistic protagonist, this young adult contemporary gives us a classic high school story with an autistic twist. We get to see multiple Black autistic characters (still all too much a rarity in autistic representation across media), including Daniel Sanchez, who hides behind his camera just as he hides his autism from even his best friend—who he tries to set up with the cute enby who just transferred to their school, because the scripts Daniel lives his life by tell him that his cool bestie and this cool new kid naturally belong together.

As Daniel aims to get his friends to prom, the story draws him into new and unexpected experiences (and autistics know how scary and confusing new and unexpected can be), including at the heart of his own romance. I love how we get to see just how hard autistic masking can be, how exhausting it is and how much downtime he needs to recalibrate, as well as how Daniel’s spirit drives him to nevertheless go after what he wants.

The book gives us insight into both Daniel’s habit of masking and natural personality through scenes of another of his special interests, LARPing, and has amazing representation of not only autism but a variety of queer characters including bi and aro.

The post Leanne Schwartz’s Recommendations for Autism Acceptance Month appeared first on The Nerd Daily.

She went on to earn an MA degree in specialized journalism for the arts from the University of Southern California where she now works as chief program officer of a research center for Black media and social justice.

Releasing on April 16th 2024, When I Think Of You is a sweeping second chance romance from debut author Myah Ariel where the unexpected spark of two former flames may force them to choose between their dreams and each other.

As a nineties kid with an old-soul, I feel like I was destined to become a romance author. Whether I was riding in the backseat of my mom’s station wagon belting out to R&B icons like Mary J. Blige and Toni Braxton or getting dressed for school with the antics of Hillman College’s coeds as background noise–I’ve grown up surrounded by potent illustrations of Black Love. Naturally, when I sat down to write my first book, When I Think of You–which is itself a romance novel about making a romance film–I wanted to create something that felt just like the Black love stories that made me a hopeless romantic in the first place. One that evoked the chemistry and longing my favorite artists sang about, and that featured the vibrantly authentic characters that have been immortalized in movies and on TV. In that same spirit, I’ve compiled a list of some of my favorite romance novels written by Black authors, and the classic films and TV shows to pair them with based on vibes alone.

Read this contemporary romance that features a seering take on the childhood friends to lovers trope which brings us on an angst-filled journey of two soulmates with the worst timing–much like the gorgeously lyrical film Sylvie’s Love which, set in the 1960’s, highlights a “right person-wrong time” connection between a deeply conflicted woman who is soon to be wed and the jazz musician who swept her off her feet.

Releasing on February 13th 2024, her hilarious debut adult rom-com Hannah Tate, Beyond Repair is all about starting over that sparkles with intelligence, wit, and compassion—think Bridget Jones meets Steel Magnolias!

As a devoted romance reader, viewer, and now author, I’ve had a long time to hone my ideal love interest. Sure, I like the occasional dark, brooding, dangerous type that’ll help you with your dragon or whatever, but what really makes me tick, in real life and in fiction, is a hot, lovable goofball. I’m not alone, either. Matt Berry’s Lazlo in What We Do in the Shadows, Jessica Williams’ Gaby from Shrinking, every single character in New Girl—TV is full of lovable goofballs, and the good news is, so are romance novels.

What is it that makes a goofball so incredibly attractive? If the adage that we fall in love with how a person makes us feel is true, it makes perfect sense. Goofballs are fundamentally positive people. They look at life through a fun, playful lens, which makes them great flirts and someone you want around when life gets hard. Also, it takes confidence to be so unabashedly silly and positive. While sarcasm screams I make fun of others because I’m terrified of looking uncool, a goofball doesn’t care what others think of them—they just want everyone to have a good time. That kind of confidence is so mmmm.

My debut adult rom-com Hannah Tate, Beyond Repair was the first romance novel I’d ever written, and I knew as I set out to write this book, the love interest needed to be a goofball. Someone who is warm, loving, attentive, and playful, who can alternate between making you laugh and making you blush. There is simply nothing hotter to me! And once Hannah meets River, the handsome carpenter with a man bun and a cat named “Battle Cat” who lives in the tricked-out treehouse next door, she definitely agrees.

So, if you’re like me and you’d rather laugh and snuggle than manage some wicked fiend out of his cloak, grab one of these lovely novels featuring goofballs of the highest quality:

I love Alicia Thompson’s work (and also her newsletters, sign up if you haven’t yet), and this is my favorite of her romances so far.
Okay, maybe you like your goofballs to be of the Duke variety? Alexandra Vasti is my absolute favorite historical romance author because she gets every bit of it right—the voice, the period, the HEAT (OMG), and also the cheeky humor that makes me reach for historicals in the first place! I absolutely adored her Halifax Hellions novella series, and this is her debut full-length novel and y’all, it does not disappoint! Pick this up when you’re ready to blush, swoon, and pull the drapes closed for an evening. Out July 2024.

Another classic, Jeremy Wentworth is primo goofball love interest—mischievous, sexy, loving, hilarious—and also the owner of the whole village. Being serious isn’t generally how he rolls, but he’s serious as sin when it counts. Whew!

Dukes fall in love. Werewolves fall in love, and so do small town bakers and big city billionaires and farmers and firefighters. Neurodivergent people also fall in love in some of my favorite romance novels, and it’s even sweeter watching how the same beloved tropes play out when the full range of human diversity is represented on the page.

Chloe Liese’s Two Wrongs Make a Right

Liese has long promoted her philosophy that “everyone deserves a love story,” and many of her books feature main characters with physical or mental disabilities. In Two Wrongs Make a Right, autistic free-spirit Bea falls for uptight Jamie, an anxious pediatrician with daddy issues. Liese’s characters’ disabilities are never portrayed as the obstacles they’re overcoming to find true love—instead she focuses on their relationships, communication, and steamy moments.

Lisa Kleypas’ Love in the Afternoon

The first time I ever read romance novels that featured main characters with mental illness or conditions like alcoholism, it was in historicals. It’s often more subtle, because Regency England did not exactly have a robust mental health system, but characters like Captain Phelan deal with the same challenges as contemporary love interests, just using different language. This book has a heart wrenching mistaken identity plot complicated by what modern readers will realize is PTSD arising out of Phelan’s service in the Crimean War. Kleypas deftly contrasts the lovers’ points of view, demonstrating that Phelan’s mental illness isn’t the problem—it’s his fear of it.

Helen Hoang’s The Heart Principle

Hoang doesn’t shy away from showing the pain of unaccommodated autism and untreated mental illness in the middle of a tender love story. This romance has a lovely steamy slow burn but also makes brilliant points about a character trying to push herself into a role her brain will simply not let her perform. Raw and beautiful.

Managed by Kristen Callihan

Kristen Callihan’s Managed became an instant grumpy/sunshine classic from the day it released—and for good reason. On her way to London for a job interview, the incredibly likeable Sophie ends up sitting next to Gabriel “Scottie” Scott, the tightly-buttoned, grouchy manager of one of the world’s most popular rock bands. They’re oil and water, but the reluctant sparks are there from the beginning, and when they end up working and touring together, and chronic insomniac Gabriel discovers that he can relax and sleep for the first time…as long as it’s cuddled up next to Sophie, the path is laid for one of my all-time favourite pairings.

The War Priest by Ann Aguirre

Ann Aguirre excels at opposites-attract pairings (for anyone who enjoys sci-fi romance, I also highly recommend Renegade Love, in which an abducted human heroine is taken yet again, this time by the universe’s most feared bounty hunter, Toth Krag, who’s been trained as the ultimate weapon of destruction and vengeance, taught to follow orders without question—and who falls like a ton of bricks for the strange “Tiny Nightmare” who’s having none of it.)

In her paranormal series “Ars Numina”, however, The War Priest is one of my favourite romances of the past few years; it sees another unlikely pairing in a soul-singing, soft-hearted lynx shifter and the bear-shifter warrior monk she adores. He’s taken vows of celibacy, there’s a war knocking on the door, and every chance that neither of them will survive the coming weeks—and the bond between them is so heartfelt it just resonates off the page.

Written in the Stars by Alexandria Bellefleur

I have a long list of beloved tropes, but grumpy/sunshine and fake dating will always be top-tier for me, and Alexandria Bellefleur’s totally delightful rom-com Written in the Stars hits on both counts—and in every other way. After a terrible blind date, straight-laced, practical Darcy and starry-eyed astrologer Elle are in no doubt whatsoever that they haven’t met their perfect match. However, when Darcy skews the truth to avoid any further family matchmaking, the pair find themselves embroiled in deception, having to pull off the image of romantic bliss until New Year’s Eve. Naturally, sparks begin to fly, and their journey from “absolutely not” to soulmates is witty, sexy, and an instant comfort-read.

Coldest Fire by Juliette Cross

Taking a turn into urban fantasy, an icy archangel set on vengeance is forced to call on a human witch for help, a woman he remembers with bitterness from one of the worst moments of his existence—but as they fight against a common enemy, they both realise that the other isn’t what they assumed. Coldest Fire is another excellent romance from Cross and the epitome of love and light triumphing over evil.

Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hibbert

Talia Hibbert’s writing is just a pure joy to read—even when it’s packing an absolute emotional punch, it remains a comfort read, because she infuses every paragraph with such warmth and love, for her characters, for their world, and for the story, in a way that draws the reader in and makes them immediately part of the experience. The first in the Brown Sisters trilogy was one of my first Talia Hibbert books, so holds a place in my heart—but I think Eve’s story is my favourite of the trilogy.

On the surface, Eve is the epitome of the sunshine character, but she’s worked to have that positive attitude despite her earlier dreams not turning out as she’d hoped—and when she meets Jacob, the grumpy B&B owner (…and then accidentally runs him over), she can let her guard down for the first time, and the two find strength in each other. Through what they become together, they can more clearly see themselves for who they are as individuals. It’s a beautiful book and an amazing love story.

Hunt the Darkness by Alexandra Ivy

Part of Alexandra Ivy’s paranormal “Guardians of Eternity” series, Hunt the Darkness is the happy-ever-after of vampire clan leader Roke—notorious for his icy, practical nature—and the unintentionally chaotic (and lonely) witch Sally. After Sally accidentally casts a spell that triggers Roke’s “true mate” instinct, the pair find themselves seemingly irrevocably tied together—to their equal horror. It’s a road-trip romance as Sally takes off to find a way to break this seeming curse, with Roke in hot pursuit, as like it or not, she’s his mate and in potential danger. As they transition from enemies to reluctant allies and then lovers—with the well-intentioned but disastrous assistance of a tiny gargoyle named Levet—it’s an excellent mix of adventure and romance.

It’s a Jackie Lau romance called “Grumpy Fake Boyfriend”; it couldn’t have been more obvious this would land on my keeper shelf if there were neon signs pointing at it. I adore Lau’s writing—it’s warm and heartfelt, but it’s also frequently laugh-out-loud funny. I loved the banter between sci-fi writer Will and event-planner Naomi, as the introvert and the extrovert pretend to be dating, in order to help Naomi save face in front of an ex. A relatively low-angst, warm hug of a story, like all of Lau’s novels, in which two very different people find common ground and accept and love each other for who they are.

There’s something absolutely perfect about two people who seem like total opposites finding each other and falling in love. It is, without a doubt, my favorite character pairing when it comes to romance—opposites attract, grumpy/sunshine, whatever you want to call it. It’s why I chose this particular pairing for my new contemporary romance, ACCIDENTALLY IN LOVE. When two people with fundamentally different personalities find a way to overcome obstacles (often deliciously angsty and pent-up in nature), argue a bit (or a lot), and end up completely besotted.

Here are a few recent-ish Grumpy/Sunshine pairings that I’ve enjoyed…

HIGHLY SUSPICIOUS AND UNFAIRLY CUTE by Talia Hibbert

Talia Hibbert is, in my opinion, one of the best authors writing grumpy-sunshine pairings. In her YA romance debut, Celine and Bradley are former childhood friends and current academic rivals for a competitive and prestigious internship. Celine—the grump—is totally flummoxed by Bradley—the sunshine—who has seemingly coasted through school on his charm, good looks, ease with academics, and athleticism. Bradley, on the other hand, finds Celine both annoyingly correct all the time as well as adorably nerdy, all with the incessant ability to prove him wrong. Their former friendship means they know what makes the other tick, which ramps up the rivalry. I adored watching these two overcome their past grievances and show true vulnerability!

If you want to lean into witchy cottagecore ahead of Halloween, this is the book for you! Mika is a secret witch and member of a society of witches living in England. After spending most of her life alone and hiding her powers, she’s tapped to train a few orphans with magical abilities. Mika is charmed by the wonderfully welcoming group of people she meets at Nowhere House, and wonders if she has found a new family to be a part of… that is, if she can figure out a way to get along with the incredibly broody librarian, Jamie. Mika is lovely in spite of her solitary upbringing. Jamie is a perfect foil and love interest—he’s a bit taciturn and quite introverted (what else do we want in a grumpy librarian? Nothing, as far as I can tell!), and can’t help but be enchanted by Mika’s warm demeanor.

FORGET ME NOT by Julie Soto

A second-chance romance about a wedding planner who has to work with her florist ex on the highest profile wedding of her career? When I heard this premise, I was intrigued. But when I found out it was also a grumpy-sunshine pairing, I was INVESTED. Ama takes on this influencer wedding to raise her profile in the wedding industry, but she’s taken aback when she has to work with her ex, Elliot, on the floral arrangements. When these two put aside their differences (sort of, LOL) and work together, they are so in sync and create something spectacular… which of course leads to absolutely *fire* steamy scenes.

The character of Raven is my favorite type of sunshine; she has a heart of gold but is totally chaotic in everything she does. When she inherits an outdoor tourism business, she decides to spend a few months working there, even though she’s not sure she wants to keep it and she’s never really done anything like it before. Silas is grumpy for *reasons* and had his sights set on taking over the business, but he’s thwarted—and intrigued—by Raven’s arrival. The banter between Raven and Silas is top notch and when they finally get together it’s SO much fun.

Nina Blackmoore is known around town as an ice queen. After her fiancée jilted her at the altar a year ago, Nina finally lets her guard down for one random date with Morty Gutierrez, the nonbinary bartender at the local dive bar. But when things go awry and Morty suddenly has magical powers—perhaps because of a spell Nina accidentally cast that may or may not have caught the attention of a goddess—Nina finds herself drawn to Morty and their easygoing acceptance. Morty is the perfect person to get under Nina’s skin but they also made it clear that they support her no matter what comes next… even if it means they’ll both lose the favor of a goddess! Nina has to learn to let go of control, both for the safety of Thistle Grove and her own happiness.
