I went on a quest when I was eight. I wrapped an apple, string cheese, and a piece of bread into a tea towel, tossed it over my shoulder, and called for Sammy the cat to follow.

Sammy, scrappy and thin, with short, black fur, trotted gamely after me. Together we walked, oh, about twenty feet from the house, sat under the kumquat tree, and ate our victuals. I felt wild and brave, venturing away from home all on my own. But it was even sweeter because I wasn’t really alone. I had Sammy to share the adventure with me.

The animal companion trope is as much a staple of fantasy as that bundle of apple, cheese, and bread. They can be non-speaking, telepathic, or capable of speech. Mundane or magical. Scaled, furred, winged, pawed, or hooved. And just like pets in the real world, fictional animal friends tend to bring out the best in their humans, helping characters grow kinder and braver than if they were alone.

I’m sure you will likely have a list of your own favorites, but here are seven of my favorite animal companions, plus one adorable pterodactyl you’ll meet in my historical fantasy, THE GEOMAGICIAN.  

The Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley

Talat (Horse)

I imprinted deeply on this lyrical story of a girl-and-her-horse hunting dragons. Talat is an aggressive, retired warhorse who slowly comes to trust the outcast princess who seeks to ride him. Talat and Aerin were the blueprint for fantasy horse girlies born in the 80s and 90s.

Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb

Nighteyes (Wolf)

In Robin Hobb’s epic Realm of the Elderlings series some people possess a magic called ‘Wit’ that allows them to bond with animals. The main character, Fitz, bonds to a wolf named Nighteyes, and their relationship is genuinely one of the most moving depictions of friendship I’ve ever read. But prepare yourself if you pick this one up—you’re going to cry.

His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik

Temeraire (Dragon)

This delightful series by Naomi Novik reimagines the Napoleonic Wars—with dragons. After Temeraire imprints on Captain Will Laurence, an English naval officer, the pair join the ranks of the British Aerial Corps. Clever and inquisitive, Temeraire the dragon slowly breaks down Laurence’s defenses, as the pair get themselves in and out of various military, interpersonal, and political hijinks.

Emily Wilde Series by Heather Fawcett

Shadow (Dog?)

Emily Wilde is a no-nonsense scholar researching the fae. She is accompanied (and protected) on fieldwork by her enormous gentle giant of a dog named Shadow. Shadow doesn’t speak, but he is a steady, constant friend to Emily, and I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say he is more than he appears. As a bonus, you also get to meet Orga—a cat who is also more than meets the eye—as the series continues.

The Bone Shard Daughter by Andrea Stewart

Mephi (Ossalen)

When Jovis, a smuggler, sees a tiny, fluffy animal swimming behind his ship, he pulls the creature aboard. Mephi, described as something like an otter-kitten, grows rapidly into an otter-dragon called an ossalen and learns to speak. If an otter-dragon companion isn’t enough to sell you on it, this series has one of my favorite magic systems in which coding on pieces of bone can control animal constructs.   

Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher

Bone Dog (Bone dog)

It was difficult to choose my favorite T. Kingfisher animal because she often includes pets or animal friends in her work and they’re all wonderful (honorable mention to the sarcastic armadillo from Minor Mage.) But Bone Dog stole my heart from the first ghost lick he gives heroine Mara after she assembles him in a charnel pit. Bone Dog becomes Mara’s loyal companion as she sets out to kill a prince and save her sister in this funny, dark, sweet fairytale.

The Raven Scholar by Antonia Hodgkins

Sol (Not-Quite-A-Raven)

Admittedly Sol—short for Solitary Raven—is more of a metaphysical concept than an animal, but he is the reluctant companion of Neema, a scribe forced to compete to become Emperor. Sol is as histrionic as Neema is practical, but I adored watching their unwanted bond transform into mutual respect and friendship.

The Geomagician by Jennifer Mandula

Ajax (Pterosaur)

When a fossilized egg miraculously hatches in her hands to reveal a baby pterodactyl, fossil hunter Mary Anning names him Ajax. She immediately starts scheming how to use him to further her career and become a geomagician, a magical paleontologist. But spirited little Ajax—who looks like a puffin if it were also a gargoyle—slowly thaws her heart, and will hopefully win yours, too.

What inspired you to write SNAKE-EATER?

I’ve always loved the desert. I lived in Arizona for a number of years and missed it fiercely, and one day I found myself writing about a dog lying down on the porch, thinking about dusty roads and saguaros and little quail scurrying along the side of the road, and the rest just kind of fell into place as I wrote.

What about the fantasy and horror genres appeal to you as a writer?

I’ve never been able to get the hang of realistic fiction. After a point, I start to think “You know what would solve this? Ninjas. Or dragons.”

Your writing is a combination of creepy and humorous. Why the balance between laughter and unease?

It’s a combination of two things. First of all, many humans in terrible situations make jokes. (See also the entire run of M*A*S*H*.) It’s how we cope with things. But also you can’t rachet up the tension on something indefinitely. There comes a point where the spring is wound as tight as it will go. So you need to release a little tension for the reader so you can start ratcheting it up again, and I find that humor’s the best way to do that.

SNAKE-EATER features an eclectic bunch of women. What qualities are important for your heroines?

I think they just have to feel real to me. Most of them are flawed, but like people I know are flawed, they’re not concealing some terrible evil secret, they’re just tired and overstressed and trying to do too many things. I don’t sit down and plan out their characters in advance, they mostly reveal themselves on the page, so it’s an organic process.

What are some recurring themes in your fiction writing?

Nature, definitely, particularly nature seen in weird lights. (My readers occasionally say things like, “Okay, you ruined ladybugs in the last one, what are you ruining in this book?) Newly single women alone in a scary house with their pet is my quintessential horror scenario, but animal companions show up a lot in my work.

Found family is an important theme in SNAKE-EATER. How would you define what found family is?

I’m never quite sure at what point friendship tips over into found family. For me, it’s the people who, when I say, “God, I just don’t want to be around people for a bit,” don’t count. The ones who can sit at the table with you, both of you on your phones or with a book, and you don’t feel the need to entertain each other. You can just exist in the same space without it taking effort.

On the other hand, there’s a lot to be said for the kinds of friends who, if you call them up at 3 AM and say, “I have this dead body here…” will say “Do you want me to bring tarps and lye or do you have some there already?”

Regardless of the definition, SNAKE-EATER is definitely a book about finding your people when your own family has failed you, the people who think you’re fine as you are. And maybe also have tarps and lye if the situation arises.

You often write about nature in your books. Do you do a lot of research to incorporate these details and if so, what is your research process? What is something you learned that surprised you while researching SNAKE-EATER?

Heh! No, I’m an enthusiastic amateur naturalist and I generally have to stop myself from putting too MANY details. I really want to tell everyone about saguaros and creosote and all kinds of things, but if you do too much, it risks bogging the story down. But I did learn the interesting fact that while scorpions have very poor vision, they’re quite sensitive to green light.

You are an avid birdwatcher. What about the roadrunner intrigued you to give it such a starring role in your latest novel?

Roadrunners are dinosaurs. Seriously. They are freaky little carnivores. The Warner Brothers cartoons did them a disservice because people assume they’re like a weird harmless mini-ostrich, but in actuality, every time the coyote blew himself up, the roadrunner would be cheerfully stripping meat off his corpse. I have heard so many stories about horrible things people have seen roadrunners do—lying in wait to pick small birds off a feeder, or getting into a nest of baby rabbits and…well. They’re very much an example of a species that, if they were bigger or we were smaller, would go from being funny to being terrifying.

Who was your favorite character in SNAKE-EATER to write?

Oh, Grandma Billy, by leaps and bounds. Her interplay with Father Aguirre was a total delight.

You are a very prolific writer and write for both adults and children. What is your writing process?

I get up, I get something to drink, I stare at the garden for a few minutes, then I sit down at my laptop and write a thousand words. More if I’ve got it in me, but a thousand is pretty much the minimum. I have to get 4-5k done a week or all the plates I am spinning will collapse.

What is the main message you hope readers will gain from reading your new novel?

Oh, goodness. I don’t know if there IS a message as such. Maybe to respect the desert? It is spectacular and unique and pretty much everything wants to kill you. It’s also vanishing at a horrible rate due to development because it’s not like a rainforest where you can SEE that it’s full of life. Everything is much more subtle and underground.

She came around the corner, and there was the house, tucked up in scruffy green shrubs. An impressively multiarmed saguaro grew directly across the road, and an impressively dead one lay slumped beside it. Another low stone wall, like the one at Grandma Billy’s, ran along the road here, then curved around both sides of the house, though this one was devoid of peacocks.

It was a small house. Well, the postmistress said it would be.

It might be two rooms, possibly three. Certainly no more than that. It was tea-colored adobe with two windows in the front, and a wraparound porch that sagged in the middle. Some aggressive vine had eaten two of the porch posts and was making threatening gestures toward a third. There was a rocking chair on the porch that had been cobwebbed into place and glazed in pale-white dust. Solar panels covered the roof, none of them new.

There was a dirt path up to the house. White stones like blocky skulls picked out the edges of . . . well, you couldn’t call them flower beds. Scrub beds, maybe. Whatever the difference was between bare dirt and dirt with gray-green spiky things in it.

This is it. This is where Aunt Amelia lived, until a year ago.

A year ago. A year ago. A year too late.

She set that thought aside, for all the good it did her.

Once upon a time, Selena would have gone up to the house, walked around it, looking in the windows.

Once upon a time, she could talk without worrying about it, and didn’t run every sentence through her head a dozen times first. Once upon a time had come and gone and there were no happily ever afters. She let go of her suitcase, untangled Copper’s leash, and put her hand on the stone wall.

It was hard under her fingers, the stones rough, the edges sharp. She closed her eyes. She could believe that the peacock and Grandma Billy were part of a dream, but the stone wall was too clearly a real thing. If the wall was real, then everything else was real. All right. Not a dream, then. It was all really happening and her aunt was really dead and she was really broke and stranded in a town called Quartz Creek and the dead woman’s house was really in front of her.

It looked . . . friendly.

If the two windows were eyes, then the left one was half closed into a wink by the rioting vine. The porch sagged into a smile. The desert was enormous and the house was very small, but it looked brave and rather hopeful.

It reminded her of Copper when she was a puppy, deeply convinced that the world was full of kind giants who loved her, and if she only waited long enough, one would come and play.

I am losing my mind. I mean, I already lost it, I know, but now I am getting maudlin and reading things into a falling-down porch. It’s probably heatstroke. I should sit down.

If I go up to the house, I could sit down on the porch. I could even open up the door and go inside. It might be cooler in there.

Selena stood by the wall and didn’t move.

It was a nice house. She could see why her aunt might have lived there. But it wasn’t hers.

If I go in, I might start to like it and if I do, somebody will take it away from me. You can’t just walk up and lay claim to a house. That’s not how it works.

She remembered the empty houses in the middle of town, with the boarded-up windows. The postmistress told me—she said they can’t keep people in them—but it can’t be like that, not really . . .

It was too easy, too unearned. You did not get things handed to you. It was a central tenet of Selena’s mother’s philosophy, that you did not just get things handed to you. Everything had to be earned.

The world today seems dark. A pandemic has changed life as we know it, the rising cost of living hangs hauntingly over our heads, and climate change poses a dreadful threat. It makes perfect sense that gothic horror has returned from the dead.

Gothic fiction can be seen across genres, from young adult, like Gallant by V.E. Schwab, to literary fiction, such as Our Wives Under The Sea by Julia Armfield. Staples of classic horror have been retold and updated for the modern age, like S.T. Gibson’s A Dowry of Blood, a retelling of Dracula that focuses on the stories of Dracula’s brides. Gothic horror has made its way to the silver screen with Netflix shows like “The Haunting of Hill House” and “The Haunting of Bly Manor” receiving critical success and some would argue Twilight is a modern gothic romance. In a modern and technologically advanced world, why does gothic literature, with its supernatural elements and antiquated aesthetics, remain so popular?

WHAT IS GOTHIC LITERATURE?

When you think of gothic horror, you probably immediately think of creepy graveyards, women in Victorian dresses fleeing in the night and foreboding castles on misty hills. In reality, there is no one defining feature of gothic literature. However, the most common gothic themes include an oppressive, isolated environment (think of the eponymous The Castle of Otranto or Wuthering Heights), supernatural threats, disturbing, and grotesque characters or situations and the past returning to haunt the present. These are often representations of social conflicts or the fears of the time. Present in all gothic horror is an overwhelming sense of dread and paranoia that isn’t just limited to the pages of the book, but also reflects a social paranoia.

The popularity of gothic literature has ebbed and flowed over time. The Enlightenment’s focus on reason and logic meant that gothic literature’s supernatural elements were viewed with disdain. However, like a ghost, it returns to haunt the living. This new gothic horror revival begs the question—what makes it so popular in the 2020s? Here are three novels published since 2020 that perfectly show how gothic literature can adapt to the new problems modern society faces.

THE COST OF LIVING IN HOUSE OF HUNGER
“My Lord, what is blood! What is nobility!” proclaimed Horace Walpole in the first gothic novel The Castle of Otranto, published in 1764. Power imbalances and class consistently feature in gothic literature, dating back to the evil, tyrannical prince that rules said Castle of Otranto.

Walpole’s question, “what is blood! What is nobility!” is answered in Alexis Henderson’s House of Hunger (2022). Inspired by the real story of Countess Elizabeth Báthory, who killed hundreds of her female servants between 1590 and 1610, House of Hunger follows Marion Shaw, a poor labourer desperate to escape the slums. She begins to work for Countess Lisavet as a bloodmaid, a servant whose blood is drained and consumed by her employer. Countess Lisavet presides over a hedonistic court in the House of Hunger, where aristocrats live in lavish luxury at the expense of their bloodmaids. Henderson is an excellent world-builder. She seriously interrogates what life would be like if blood was seen as a resource—blood can be used as a fuel, it’s a sweetener in tea and bloodmaids are all exclusively female. Marion’s world “runs on blood. Who has good blood. Who has bad blood. Whose blood is shed and whose isn’t.”

House of Hunger presents a world where the wealthy are bloodsucking parasites that exploit those below them. Lisavet’s court is morally bankrupt and delights in the torment of the servants. The aristocracy’s opulent lifestyle is dependent on the suffering of the bloodmaids, whose profession is draining and poses drastic health risks. Does this sound familiar?

Blood in House of Hunger represents modern anxieties around class. Marion’s life as a bloodmaid is not much different from her life in the slums. The physical building of the House of Hunger keeps her in this unequal class structure, a reality for many people today. Life for the average person is getting worse while billionaires continue to live in luxury. Taylor Swift’s excessive use of private jets is horrifying when millions of Britons cannot afford to heat their homes. With the rising cost of living, inflation, economic crisis, and declining working conditions, House of Hunger reflects our world where the wealth disparity between the rich and poor is increasingly becoming a fear that preys on the mind of ordinary people.

“What is blood?” Walpole asked. Henderson replied, “wealth and power.”

A SOUTHERN GOTHIC DETOUR: WHEN THE RECKONING COMES

You may not have heard of Southern gothic, but you’ve definitely seen its influence. Recent films and television shows have incorporated elements of Southern gothic, such as HBO’s Lovecraft Country and True Blood. As the name implies, this is a gothic subgenre that often critiques the racism, religious fanaticism and poverty of the post-Confederate South. Southern gothic reveals what is really underneath the bayous and antebellum plantations—a history of oppression and slavery.

LaTanya McQueen’s debut novel When The Reckoning Comes (2021) is a classic Southern gothic ghost story. Mira is a black woman who grew up in the racist Southern town of Kipsen. She returns many years later for the wedding of her white childhood friend Celine, which takes place on the rebuilt Woodsman Plantation. Celine, Mira and her old flame Jesse are all forced to reckon with the past, so they don’t repeat the same mistakes.

When the Reckoning Comes features all the trappings of a gothic horror—an isolated house, a heroine thrust into a mystery and ghosts returning to haunt the present. But more importantly, McQueen draws connections between the past and the present. History repeats itself and Mira cannot help seeing echoes of the past in the modern-day.

Mistakes returning to haunt the present is a common trope in classic gothic literature. Victor Frankenstein can never be rid of his creation and the sins of his past, while the eponymous Rebecca haunts the narrator, her lack of name and identity showing how overwhelming Rebecca’s presence is from beyond the grave. When the Reckoning Comes is no different. While the wealthy whites try to ignore the plantation’s history, some ghosts don’t stay buried. Likewise, the Black Lives Matter movement of 2020 showed that racism hasn’t gone away, it’s simply just changed.

McQueen warns against complacency regarding social progress, as Mira and Jesse are both forced to relive the experiences of their slave ancestors. In Mira’s case, this is quite literal and Jesse is witch-hunted by a racist mob for a crime he didn’t commit, the only evidence that damns him is his skin colour. McQueen forces us to reckon with a past steeped in racist violence because if we don’t, it may happen again.

THE HOLLOW PLACES: A HEART-WARMING EVOLUTION
Hopeful and heart-warming aren’t normally words associated with horror, but gothic horror has always been a genre for subverting tropes and centering the outcasts. For instance, female authors and characters have always been instrumental in the gothic tradition. Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein, one of the most genre-defining horror novels, at a time when female authors had to publish under pseudonyms. Mina is instrumental in plotting Dracula’s downfall and Le Fanu’s Carmilla was progressive when compared to its contemporaries for its depiction of female relationships and sexuality. H.P. Lovecraft blended gothic horror with science fiction and existentialism to create an entirely new genre of horror—cosmic horror. Of course, gothic horror is the perfect genre for authors to experiment with new types of horror.

Gothic horror reflects the worst aspects of society and humanity. But what if a gothic novel presented a positive view of the world instead? The Hollow Places (2020) by T. Kingfisher is a Lovecraftian gothic story that follows Kara, who runs her uncle’s creepy Wonder Museum, full of taxidermied animals, while he has surgery. She and her neighbour Simon discover a hole in the wall that leads to an evil dimension that puts the Wonder Museum in danger.

In her other works, such as Nettle and Bone, Kingfisher takes characters who would be comic relief or side characters in other novels and turns them into heroes. The Hollow Places is no exception. Kara is a 35-year-old divorcee who writes fan-fiction and Simon is an eccentric gay man in his 40s that runs a coffee shop and wears fishnets. They’re not the traditional Byronic heroes of classic gothic literature. They’re oddballs. The Wonder Museum is not like the claustrophobic House of Hunger or the Woodsman Plantation—it’s Kara’s home and all she wants is to return. The taxidermied animals aren’t creepy, they’re Kara’s childhood friends. Kingfisher throws our expectations of gothic horror out the window and instead turns gothic tropes into a source of safety.

The Hollow Places might be the only cosy horror novel ever written.  It’s the scariest novel in this article, yet it doesn’t leave readers depressed about the world. Instead, it wraps them in a blanket and gives them a warm mug of hot chocolate. Given the state of the world, isn’t that what we need right now? Life is scary but we can still find comfort, even in gothic and grotesque times.

If you’ve never read a gothic horror novel, now is the perfect time. The genre doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon. Gothic literature explores the terrifying issues of modern life—and there’s plenty of issues to explore in today’s world! But gothic horror is also a genre poised for interesting experimentation with classic tropes. So whether you’re a horror veteran or a complete newbie to the genre, keep an eye on new gothic novels. You never know what else might lurk in the dark.
