Wynonna Earp is what you would call a horror-western. A genre that I didn’t know existed until I watched the show and one that I can definitely get behind. Based on the comic books by Beau Smith, created for TV by Emily Andras (who worked on Lost Girl), it first aired in the USA in 2016 on Syfy and has finished its third season. You can find it on 5 Spike in the UK, and it is also on Netflix so is perfect for binge watching.

The show follows Wynonna Earp (played by Melanie Scrofano, Being Erica, The Listener) as a descendant of the renowned Wyatt Earp as she heads back to the town of Purgatory in the aptly named Ghost River Triangle. She finds herself faced with the “Earp curse” where every 27 years, all of Wyatt Earp’s kills rise as zombie-like “revenants” that can only be put down by the Earp heir Wynonna, and Wyatt’s legendary weapon, Peacemaker.

The witty banter in the show, dark comedy value, and the supernatural elements mean I would recommend this show to those that were fans of Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Supernatural.

Here are 5 reasons why you should add this kick ass show to your to watch list!

1. Doc Holiday

Wyatt Earp’s one time companion Doc Holliday is one of my favourite characters on the show. He has a lovely accent and an “old timely” way of speaking, and has a wonderful style, and look at that fine moustache! Canadian actor Tim Rozon (Instant Star, Schitts Creek) does a brilliant job portraying the gunslinger and putting his own spin on the role.

One of my favourite scenes is when Doc learns to drive his stolen pink 1979 Lincoln Continental car, as well as coming to terms with using a mobile phone. He provides humour to the show, but also tends to be involved in most of the drama, as he doesn’t always make the best decisions, and has a lot of history and a fair few enemies.

2. Diversity and Inclusivity

Wynonna Earp has a picked up a large LGBTQ following which is thanks to the popular, long-standing same-sex couple that is bisexual Waverly Earp (played by Dominique Provost-Chalkey) and Police Officer Nicole Haught (Kat Barrell). This fan favourite pairing is affectionately known by its ship name – Wayhaught.

Comic nerd and scientist Jeremy (played by Varun Saranga) also identifies as gay on the show. The show has been recognised and nominated for a GLAAD Award for the outstanding drama series.
Wynonna Earp also won a People’s Choice Award for the best Sci-fi/fantasy Show of 2018, beating competition including Shadowhunters and The Originals.

3. The Fandom

The fandom itself is another reason to watch the show. Proudly known as Earpers, some fans have taken to buying billboards in New York’s Times Square to share their appreciation for the show and to show the TV networks just how loved it is. The movement #fightforwynonna has come about after there are rumours that IDW Entertainment, the studio behind the show, may not be able to proceed with the season 4 as first promised. Not content with just tweeting a hashtag, the Earpers decided it was go big or go home.

The actors on the show have been getting involved with the campaign, recently with Tim Rozon (Doc Holiday) and Michael Eklund (Bobo) taking a trip down to the action now known as Earp Square to hang out with the fans. The actors and the creator Emily have a lot of time for the fans, always hanging out on Twitter and responding to as many Earpers as possible.

Thank you!! This is truly amazing. You support is unmeasurable. @WynonnaEarp @IDWEntertain pic.twitter.com/SdcFDRKG6r

The Earpers are a very inclusive community, with many conventions taking place around the world. Examples include Earpapalooza in October in St Louis in the USA, Earpercon in September in London in the UK, Next Stop; Purgatory in November in Paris and The Earper Homestead Convention in August in Toronto.

4. Villains You’ll Love To Hate

I love a show with a grey character. Are they good or evil? Are they friend or foe? Bobo Del Rey (that has to be one of the best names ever right?) takes up this role in season one. He is played by the talented Michael Eklund (Bates Motel, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency) and I love every scene that he is in, and I cannot imagine anyone else playing this unstable character. No spoilers here, but there is definitely more to his complex story than first meets the eye. Also – the fashion is ridiculous. Look at the coat, Lady Gaga would be proud.

5. It’s Funny!

I mentioned this briefly earlier, but the show is hilarious! Sometimes it verges on the ridiculous. Each character has their own sense of humour, and there is banter back and forth, silly one-liners and plenty of innuendos. Of course there are serious moments, and dark moments, but I’ve found that watching Wynonna Earp cheers me up when I’ve had a bad day, which gives it the feel good factor. Hopefully, it would do the same for others too. Seriously, give this show a go!

The Russo Brothers bring the 2014 comic series Deadly Class to life on Syfy with the new television series set in the 1980’s and following a private assassin academy called King’s Dominion.

Deadly Class is based on the 2014 comic by Rick Remender and Wes Craig and the series picks up with the introduction of Marcus, a homeless yet cunning teenager, who is invited to join the academy and introduced to some deadly teens who come from the likes of mob bosses and mass murderers. It’s most definitely an unusual coming-of-age story, but it does well to chronicle the ups and downs of growing up.

The series comes from the Russo brothers, who are well-known for Doctor Strange and Avengers: Infinity War. Comic creators Remender and Craig also serve as co-showrunners on the series. In a previous teaser and interview video, Joe Russo said that “it does an amazing job of exploring teenage years and the sense of alienation that you feel. The first time we read the book we were blown away. That’s why we’re standing here working on the show.”

THE CHARACTERS

Master Lin (Benedict Wong): The headmaster of the School for the Deadly Arts. Deadly and feared. He’s an ever-changing chameleon who keeps his students desperate for his approval.

Marcus (Benjamin Wadsworth): At one point we were all Marcus, an awkward outcast full of social anxiety struggling to find his place in the cold and brutal world of high school. Marcus is bottled rage, if his life had been normal this kid might have been an artist, even a poet. Instead he’s had to survive life on the streets of San Francisco. His eyes show it. He’s morally centered in an unethical world.

Saya (Lana Condor): Mysterious and guarded with a deadly reputation. Saya was banished from one of the top Yakuza clans in Japan, sent to the School for the Deadly Arts to redeem herself. Driven to be the valedictorian, nothing will stand in her way.

Maria (Maria Gabriela de Faria): One minute Maria’s an extrovert and an exhibitionist, a tornado of ever changing emotions—fierce, charming, beautiful and oozing femininity — the next she’s murderous, feral, and crippled by rage. At the School for the Deadly Arts her instability is treated like a super power.

Willie (Luke Tennie): A hardened gangster, but underneath is an honest and thoughtful person who would rather be reading comic books and listening to music than engaging in blood work. Forced by his mother, leader of an LA gang, into the School for the Deadly Arts, he is under endless pressure to become the thing he hates most.

Billy (Liam James): Skater punk, son of a corrupt cop and now a misfit at the school. He’s off kilter and high energy. Billy combats every situation with sarcasm and humor. Always a glimmer of mischief in his eye.

Chico (Michel Duval): Scary, muscular, son of a cartel drug lord. Everyone knows not to mess with Chico. The only one who can hurt him is his girlfriend.

The series stars Benjamin Wadsworth (Teen Wolf), Lana Condor (X-Men: Apocalypse), María Gabriela de Faría (Pacific), Luke Tennie (Shock and Awe), Liam James (The Killing), and Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange).

Deadly Class premieres January 16th at 10pm on Syfy.

As the crew nears their destination, they discover that the ship’s artificial intelligence and never-seen captain may be steering them into deadly and unspeakable horrors deep in the dark reaches of space.

During their panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2018, executive producer David Bartis said, “the teaser is how we sold the show.” Later on, a fan during the Q&A portion of the panel asked about their inspiration from 2001 and The Shining. “We leaned heavily on the shoulders of the greats,” executive producer Jeff Buhler said. “We were not shy about pulling the themes and even some imagery. There’s a lot of 2001, The Shining and Ridley Scott’s Alien.”

The series stars Eoin Macken (The Night Shift), Gretchen Mol (Manchester By The Sea), David Ajala (Fast & Furious 6), Jodie Turner-Smith (The Last Ship), Phillip Rhys (Doctor Who), Sam Strike (EastEnders), Maya Eshet (Teen Wolf), Brian F. O’Byrne (Million Dollar Baby), and Angus Sampson (Fargo).

Nightflyers premieres December 2nd at 10/9c on SYFY with a new episode every night from Sunday to Thursday for two weeks, finishing up with Episode 10 on December 13th. The series is also set to be available in other countries via Netflix, but no date has been announced yet.

Since then, no information was given and the world is waiting for casting announcements, first set pictures, and so on. That being said, the series is definitely still in the works with Stiefvater constantly being asked questions about the series on her social media. You may be asking, what is the story about and why should you read and later watch it? Read on and you will learn why you definitely should!

I’ve been told by psychics my whole life that if I kiss my true love, I’ll kill him.

The Raven Cycle, or often called The Raven Boys by fans, is a book series of four books written by Maggie Stiefvater. The series introduces you to Blue Sargent, a 17-year-old daughter of a psychic mother, and she lives in a house with her two psychic aunts, but has no similar power herself. One day four boys from the all-boys private school called Aglionby Academy, also known as The Raven Boys, walk into Nino’s, the restaurant Blue works in as a waitress to earn money for college.

Blue cannot believe it. One of the boys is destined to die soon. Why does Blue know that? Because she saw his ghost on her latest ghost watch with her aunt. Driven by this, she befriends them and finds out that the group wants to find the sleeping Welsh king Glendower, who they believe is hidden in the magical forest that surrounds their hometown.

The Raven Boys is the first book in the contemporary fantasy series, which was published in 2012. Followed by The Dream Thieves in 2013, Blue Lily, Lily Blue in 2014, and the series finished with The Raven King in 2016.

On March 1st 2018, Stiefvater released an e-book short story about Ronan, one of the boys, and it has been announced that a spin-off trilogy is in the making, which will focus on him.

What makes the books special and unique is the way Stiefvater tells it alongside the placement of the characters. She intertwines myths and creates intriguing characters that I have personally not seen in another stories as of yet.

Let’s take a closer look at the characters!

Fate is a very weighty word to throw around before breakfast.

Blue has never had it easy. Being born into a psychic family and having no powers of her own is not easy to handle. But after seeing a boy’s ghost in the cemetery, she does not understand anything anymore. Through helping the boys with their task, Blue finds out that she can amplify the energy of other psychics and supernatural beings. At first she sees all the boys as her friends, but later finds more feelings in her heart for Gansey. But, she cannot ever love him, because she is destined to kill the boy she loves the moment she kisses him.

Wanting to live, but accepting death to save others: that was courage. That was to be Gansey’s greatness.

Richard “Dick” Campbell Gansey III, or just Gansey, comes from a wealthy family and almost died seven years ago by a bee sting. After, he recovered from his near death experience he is obsessed with finding the sleeping Welsh King Glendower, who he believes saved his life and who can grant a wish. He is the leader of the Raven Boys and has a big heart for his friends. He cares for each and every one of them and would do anything for them. Among those he loves is also his old Camaro he calles Pig.

I took Chainsaw out of my dreams.

Ronan Lynch is the opposite of Gansey. He has his whole back is covered in tattoos and he is more of an introvert. He didn’t have an easy childhood with his mother in a coma and without a loving father. After his father’s murder, he and his brothers were forbidden to ever enter the house again. Due to this, he can never visit his mother who still resides there. He is called Greywaren by the magical forest surrounding their hometown called Cabeswater. Greywaren describes a person who can take things out of their dreams and that is how he got his Raven Chainsaw. However, Ronan is a character with more than just one secret.

If you never saw the stars, candles were enough.

Adam Parrish is able to attend the private school thanks to a scholarship. He comes from a family with financial problems and lives in a trailer park with his mother and abusive father. Later in the story he is able to press charges against him and move out into an apartment above St. Agnes church. Adam sacrifices his free will to Cabeswater and promises to fix the ley lines and help restore them. Never has he experienced love through his family, but he later finds it when he least expects it.

You will live because of Glendower. Someone else on the ley line is dying when they should not, and so you will live when you should not.

The last of the Boys, but not the least is Noah Czerny. Noah is the one who in a way needs the others the most, because Noah is dead. He died on the same day as Gansey, but he actually stayed dead. He was used as a sacrifice by his old latin professor to wake up the ley lines and Noah is stuck and needs to be near the ley lines to be seen by the others.

In that moment, Blue was a little in love with all of them. Their Magic. Their Quest. Their awfulness and strangeness. Her Raven Boys.

A few spoilers ahead, but the first book obviously introduces all of our characters and gets the story into motion, while the second focuses on Ronan more and his ability. A hitman is after the Greywaren, which happens to be him. Ronans learns more about his family legacy and that he is not the only one who can take things out of his dreams. Because he is exhausts the power of the forest and it disappears. Adam successfully restores the ley lines and the forest comes back. However, they cannot celebrate that, because Blue’s mother disappears.

Blue Lily, Lily Blue focuses on finding Blue’s mother and brings her father into the picture and the final book is packed with one shocking scene after another and ultimately results in finding the Welsh King.

Maggie Stiefvater is the master of unique storytelling. She uses mythology that has not been used often or never and makes her own thing of it.

Cross your fingers that we will see soon the first pictures of an old brick stone warehouse with the name “Monmouth Manufacturing” on it, then you can expect to see diverse characters with realistic development with a deep complex history and sad stories. There are so many details in these four books that could fuel a TV show for a couple of seasons!

So let the stalking begin!
Written by Nadia Dardon

The cast from Syfy’s The Magicians attended San Diego Comic-Con to talk all things season four!

San Diego Comic-Con has come around again once more and the fantasy TV series The Magicians has delivered multiple surprises for what is to come. The main cast of the series was present for the panel, including Jason Ralph, Stella Maeve, Hale Appleman, Olivia Taylor Dudley, and Summer Bishil, along with the series creators, Sera Gamble and John McNamara. They were joined by Felicia Day, who played Poppy in the last season, and she was the moderator of the panel. All of them brought the news of what to expect for the future of the series.

First of all, The Magicians will return for its fourth season in 2019! After the epic finale of the third season, we were left with multiple questions. The cast is currently filming the episodes, which will be released early 2019. At the beginning of the SDCC panel, they showed a recap of everything that happened in the last season, and then the cast continued to share some of their experiences while filming some of those episodes.

Hale Appleman surprised us all especially during the panel as he was very involved in his character, responding to the questions not as an actor but as Eliot. Upon his acting, a fan asked him how it felt to play Eliot’s sexuality. Hale answered “There weren’t characters like Eliot when I was a kid. There should be more queer characters in television so sexuality is not a topic of conversation. There should be more queer characters, period.” The audience burst into applause at his response.

Olivia Taylor Dudley confessed she would like to see Quentin and Alice back together. However, it seems that in the new season Olivia will be reconnecting with the Alice of season one. Though Olivia said she had a fun time playing Alice Niffin.

The creator Sara Gamble commented how hard it was to write the plot for the upcoming episodes. “At the season finale of a TV series…you just mess up as much as you want with all the characters. That way you keep the audience alert and you invite them to guess what is happening next. That’s why getting writer’s block while writing the script is not a bad thing. Actually, it is very good because it means the public also has no idea.”

The Magicians are known for having one musical episode each season. Even though they did not confirm if there will be one in the fourth season, they did mentioned artists like Britney Spears, Madonna, Prince, or Taylor Swift would be good options.

The fourth season of The Magicians will come in 2019 and it will have 13 new episodes. Although we still don’t have a trailer, the cast delivered a video in the form of a fake documentary where the actors seem to be affected with memory loss from their characters. Without a doubt, it is a very fun video to watch, in the true style of The Magicians!

Syfy debuted the first full-length trailer for its upcoming 2019 series, Deadly Class at San Diego Comic-Con 2018.

Deadly Class is based on the 2014 comic by Rick Remender and Wes Craig, which is set in the 1980’s and follows a private assassin academy called King’s Dominion. The series picks up with the introduction of Marcus, a homeless yet cunning teenager, who is invited to join the academy and introduced to some deadly teens who come from the likes of mob bosses and mass murderers.

Attending the Comic-Con panel were showrunners Remender, Craig, Miles Orion Feldsott, and Mick Betancourt. The creatives were joined by cast members Lana Condor, María Gabriela De Faría, Benedict Wong, and Luke Tennie.

During the panel, EP Joe Russo spoke about the series. “We’ve been huge fans of the book and huge fans of Rick Remender and we’ve put a lot of time and thought and energy and passion into bringing that book to the screen as authentically as possible.”

Attendees of the panel were treated to a 15-minute long preview. Unfortunately for those not attending, we only have the trailer, but it certainly causes some excitement. Naturally with it being set in the 80’s, one can expect the series to have a constantly killer soundtrack with plenty of excellent choices to accompany fight scenes. This was further reiterated by Remender since music plays a big part of the comic, “Generation X has been forgotten and music needs a little infusion of what we were snorting back then.”

The series stars Benjamin Wadsworth (Teen Wolf), Lana Condor (X-Men: Apocalypse), María Gabriela de Faría (Pacific), Luke Tennie (Shock and Awe), Liam James (The Killing), and Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange).

Deadly Class will premiere on Syfy in 2019.

Syfy hosted a panel for Nightflyers at San Diego Comic-Con 2018 and released the first full length trailer for the upcoming space horror series.

Based on George R. R. Martin’s novella, Nightflyers is a psychological thriller set in the future of 2093 on the eve of Earth’s destruction. A crew of explorers journey on the most advanced ship in the galaxy, The Nightflyer, to intercept a mysterious alien spacecraft that might hold the key to their survival. As the crew nears their destination, they discover that the ship’s artificial intelligence and never-seen captain may be steering them into deadly and unspeakable horrors deep in the dark reaches of space.

While the novella has previously been adapted into a film back in 1987, judging by the new trailer and previous teasers, the series looks quite literally deadly serious.

George R. R. Martin was set to join the panel, but was unable to attend and sent a video message expressing his sorrow for missing the convention (he’s busy writing) and set up the first scenes of the drama. That being said, he describes Nightflyers as “a haunted house story on a starship. It’s Psycho in space.”

During the panel, executive producer David Bartis said, “the teaser is how we sold the show.” Later on, a fan during the Q&A portion of the panel asked about their inspiration from 2001 and The Shining.

Nightflyers is yet to announce a release date other than sometime in fall, but it will premiere on Syfy and internationally on Netflix.

It’s not a bird, and it’s not a plane, but it is another superhero series although it does take place long birth before the birth of our beloved Superman is born.

Krypton is set 200 years prior to the birth of Superman and it will follow Seg-El, Superman’s grandfather — whose House of El was ostracised and shamed — as he fights to redeem his family’s honour and save his beloved world from chaos. Now rankless, Seg tries to live his life, except it only becomes more complicated with the arrival of Adam Strange—a man from both the future and Earth who travelled across the galaxy and time to help prevent a threat to Krypton that could ultimately wipe out the planet way before Superman could even be born.

At the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, the producers already have a seven to eight year plan for where the series could go and that doesn’t necessarily follow Kryptonian lore. “The time travel element does give us some unpredictability and some creative license to do some stories you don’t know or stories that play out differently than what people might assume,” said DC Entertainment CCO Geoff Johns.

While this is a DC television series, it isn’t tied to the DCTV universe that includes The Flash and Gotham, so Krypton will more than likely explore their own versions of characters. With the Phantom Zone being teased towards the end of the new trailer, it seems the series will have plenty of characters, planets and times to visit, which will offer up a very intriguing show ahead.

We’ve included some details about each of the houses and the central characters which will be popping up!

HOUSE OF EL

The House of El are founders of the Kandorian science guild and they are one of Krypton’s oldest and most accomplished houses. They are known for their resolve, sacrifice and their defiance in the face of oppression. More than anything, they are defined by a belief in a better tomorrow.

The El sigil comes from an ancient Kryptonian word that means “hope.” Seg-El is our main character, however, after Seg’s family was de-ranked, the El sigil was outlawed. Seg grew up as a Rankless street rat, scamming drunk Guildsmen with his best friend, Kem.

Val-El is Seg’s grandfather, who is a great scientist and will do anything to protect his house and home planet. Charys and Ter-El are Seg’s parents and after their de-ranking, Ter worked as Daron’s clerk in the Lawmakers Guild. Before the Voice of Rao took power, Charys was a Military Guild pilot who had plans to explore space.

HOUSE OF ZOD

The Zods are an ancient house dating back to pre-cataclysm times. Zods are the protectors of Krypton, defined by their honour, not their blood. All Zod children undergo a test of honour endurance and loyalty to officially earn their place in the house. Once they prove themselves, Zods kneel to no one.

In the series, Lyta-Zod is a Private in the Sagitari who is set to bind with fellow Sagitari Commander Dev-Em. Lyta disagrees with the increasing militarisation of the Sagitari, yet she knows a Zod’s duty is to defend Kandor and protect Krypton. Donor, not blood, is what makes a Zod. It is placed above all else: family, love and life. Meanwhile, her mother is Jayna-Zod, the Primus of the Military Guild.

HOUSE OF VEX

The Vexes are the lawmakers and Krypton’s most powerful political family. They live lavishly and stay tightly bound to Krypton’s other power families through carefully arranged marriages. The House of Vex is synonymous with cunning, ruthless manipulation and lead by Daron-Vex who believes that he is the only man with the vision and strength to lead Kandor.

Nyssa is a Junior Magistrate in the Lawmakers Guild. As Daron’s daughter, she grew up learning how to manipulate others and use them to achieve her political agenda. Her father married into House Vex twenty years ago and continued to rise through the ranks of Kandorian society.

HOUSE OF EM

The founding father of House Em lost to a Zod in a Kandarian duel. The two house have been linked ever since with the Ems offering deference to the Zods. Ems tend to rise to the top rank of the military guild, finding inner peace in their duty and purpose.

Dev-Em is a loyal Sagitari commander and Lyta-Zod’s intended. He comes from a traditional house, but only goes through the motions of Raoism. His heart lies with Lyta and his loyalty lies with his Primus, Jayna-Zod. Dev-Em’s family was killed in an attack by Black Zero. Though Dev survived, he is haunted by the fact that those responsible were never found.

Krypton stars Cameron Cuffe (The Halycon), Georgina Campbell (King Arthur: Legend of The Sword), Ian McElhinney (Game of Thrones), Elliot Cowan (Da Vinci’s Demons) and Ann Ogbomo (Wonder Woman).

Based on DC characters, Krypton is executive produced by David S. Goyer (Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, The Dark Knight trilogy). Damian Kindler (Sleepy Hollow) will serve as executive producer and showrunner.

Krypton premieres Wednesday, March 21 at 10/9c on Syfy.
