Hi, Susan! Your latest novel, The Executioners Three, is out now! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

90s vibes cozy horror romance!

Were there any moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?

I loved writing Freddie. She is just SUCH a fun, cheeky voice—and so confident in herself. She has no embarrassment about who she is or her desire to be The Very Best Detective Indeed. Plus, her banter with her best friend, Divya, was an absolute delight to explore!

With it set in the 90s, what are three 90s-set movies, TV shows or books you love?

Well, definitely the classic 90s horror are always a must recommendation—as well ase the classic 90s teen romcoms. Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, She’s All That, or Never Been Kissed.

)Did I mash Freddie Prinze Jr. together with Sarah Michelle Gellard to name my heroine? You bet.)

This is your first standalone novel! Was your approach or planning any different than your previous releases?

Not really. It took me 14 years between starting it (2011) and finally seeing it hit shelves because it was a “dabble every autumn when I want the fall vibes” book. But my process is always driven by character and voice—where do they take me? What do they desperately desire and what’s in their way?

What’s next for you?

I have the final Witchlands book, Witchlight, hitting stores on November 4! It’s a beast, and I am so proud of it. The culmination of a six-book series with seven core POVs, a sweeping landscapes, and so many earned plot payoffs…

I can’t wait for fans to finally get to read it!

Lastly, what books have you enjoyed reading this year? Are there any you’re looking forward to picking up?

As a fantasy lover, I have really enjoyed Daniel Abraham’s Kithamar Trilogy—of which only the first two are out. I am absolutely feral waiting for the final installment! It’s such brilliant plotting and character work.

Hi, Susan! Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

I’m the New York Times bestselling author of a few different series, ranging from steampunk to high fantasy to urban fantasy. I’m a big gamer, and I used to work in marine ecology before become a full time writer.

When did you first discover your love for writing and stories?

My whole life I’ve been a storyteller. I truly cannot remember a time when I wasn’t telling stories or daydreaming stories or writing them—at first, just for myself. Then when the internet became A Thing, on Fictionpress. Then eventually as an author.

Quick lightning round! Tell us:

• The first book you ever remember reading: the Nancy Drew original series, when I was 8. I know there were books before that, but those are what really got me—a reluctant reader at the time—to get into reading.
• The one that made you want to become an author: The Wizard of Earthsea. That book and all of Le Guin’s changed me as a human.
• The one that you can’t stop thinking about: Right now, I’m totally existing in the world of the Queen’s Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner. I just reread all of those books for an event with Turner, and wow. They are as amazing as I remember them.

The Hunting Moon is the highly anticipated sequel to The Luminaries and it’s out now! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

Monsters, dark forests, secret societies.

What can readers expect?

The Hunting Moon picks up right where The Luminaries left off, and Winnie is discovering that the triumph doesn’t taste nearly as good as she was promised. She’s struggling under the impossible weight of family expectations, and there is still this nightmare in the forest that no one will believe is real and killing people.

What challenges did you face whilst writing the sequel?

I always struggle with sequels. First books and standalones are so free! I can write whatever I want! Let’s add this and this and this…oh wait. Now I’m in the sequel and I must actually resolve all those introduced storylines and character arcs.

I often pants more with first books, but then in sequels I have to outline and get a lot more granular in my planning. I aim to find the perfect balance of all my plot threads (why do I always add so many?!) and forward propulsion. I don’t like wasted prose—I try to keep things tight—which means I often write, rewrite, and edit a lot before I ever even finish a first draft.

Were there any moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring further?

I love exploring the past between Winnie and her two ex best friends, Erica and Jay. There’s just so much character growth you can explore when you’re dealing with characters who have a lot of secrets and a lot of past.

What’s your process when it comes to writing?

Every book demands something different, to be honest. The complexity and scale of the Witchlands makes those books very different to write from my shorter YA stuff like the Luminaries series. I work everyday, but what that “work” looks like can vary. Sometimes it’s adding words to a document, other times it’s brainstorming on my white board, and other times it’s reading my entire book and making handwritten edits.

What’s next for you?

I have the sixth book in my sweeping high fantasy series, Witchlight. Then the last Luminaries book will come out after that. Then a standalone YA horror set in 1999 called The Executioners Three. So a lot ahead!

Lastly, what 2024 book releases are you looking forward to?

I’m really excited for The Mirrored Beasts from Alexandra Bracken! I loved Silver in the Bone so much, and I can’t wait to see where she takes those characters next.

Before we continue, this is a review of the fifth book of the Witchlands series. You’ll definitely want to steer away if you haven’t caught up because there will definitely be spoilers in this review. I feel like of all of the Witchlands books, this one was the one that took me a little bit to get into until I went back and read the series recap on Susan Dennard’s website. There’s a bit of past and present perspective going on that can make the story a bit disorienting, but once things really get going, it feels like it all goes very quickly. While the story primarily focuses on Iseult, it also switches to a few other beloved characters. There’s just enough space between each storyline for them not to become confused with one another, and when the storylines start to overlap, it makes their perspectives even more important.

For most of the series, Iseult has been consistently portrayed as a young woman who struggles to keep her feelings under wraps. There’s always been a building undercurrent of something more, and Witchshadow doesn’t disappoint. Her character growth in this book is stellar, and I was so riveted by her journey. Readers will find a confidence and questioning that has been missing throughout the story, and it rounds her out as a character. Iseult has always been a badass, but in Safi’s shadow. As she stands on her own and her struggle to define herself becomes even more intense, Iseult makes some pretty tough decisions.

My favourite thing about this whole series is Iseult and Safi’s unwavering love for each other. It’s better than the romance to me, because while these two aren’t sisters by blood, their bond transcends much more than that. What’s more, despite the fact that they seem to always be spending more time apart than together, they always manage to find each other again somehow. Even in the darkest of moments, these two share an inherent trust of each other to do the right thing in the end. With this book focusing on Iseult, I also loved looking deeper into Owl’s relationship with her. From the last book we know that there was a lot of tension between them and this book further explores those threads and amplifies it into something more.

Of course, I’m also always waiting for the tantalising bits of romance that Dennard always manages to tease in between moments of tension. They’re the types of moments just before the kiss, the anticipation builds, and then blazes into something more. Iseult’s romance is my favourite, but Vivia’s is also a very strong second. I honestly cannot wait to see what will happen in the next book.

This is absolutely a series I think fantasy lovers should read. The worldbuilding is incredible and I love getting to know more of the Witchlands without sacrificing character or plot development. It’s such a well rounded series, and with the next book being the finale, I’m both excited and dreading what’s to come. For now I sit in anxious anticipation, and will rate this book a 9/10. It takes a little bit to start (make sure to read the recaps!), but once it gets going you’re in for a fantastic ride.

The last book on this list is the third in a series, but nonetheless worth the read. The Witchlands series by Susan Dennard follows a bunch of people with magical powers all set in a fantastical universe. Bloodwitch specifically focuses on the Bloodwitch Aeduan who is forced to hunt Iseult, a threadwitch. This series is full of amazing worldbuilding, an awesome magic system and features the most intriguing hate to love romance you’ve read in a long time.

The Witchlands series by Susan Dennard is a delightfully dark fantasy that is full of action and adventure. The series begins with a punch and continues to pull in readers with amazing fight sequences, the dangerous scenery, and of course, swoon-worthy characters. You’ve got some amazingly written female characters who step toe to toe with those who would oppress or belittle them. There’s also slow burn romance of course, designed to make you squeal in delight. Bloodwitch continues the series in that same kick-ass way. From start to finish I was pulled into the Witchlands world and spit back out a hollow husk of a girl. I really need the next book of this series.

Each book features several stories at once, with a focus on one character as a main arc. In Truthwitch, we got to see Safi and Iseult’s struggles. In Windwitch we caught up with Merik. In Bloodwitch, we’re catching up with Aeduan, our wretchedly lovely bloodwitch monk. A man who has several dark stains on his soul is teaming up with Iseult and a young girl named Owl to try to stop his father’s destructive path. Several paths will start intertwining to get a bigger picture of what is getting ready to happen in the Witchlands world. Alliances will be formed, broken, and reforged. This story is going to be bloody, and in the end, who knows what will happen next.

Getting back into the Witchlands after reading Windwitch was exciting, I’ve been waiting for this book for about a year. It was very fast paced and honestly, I have a bit of a crush on Aeduan. It was so fun to get to see his story unfold, getting to know the past that haunts him, and motivates him. Gah, and we get to see more Aeduan and Iseult action. Don’t get me wrong, I do love the threadsister bond that Safi and Iseult share, but that slow burn romance is so enticing.

We get introduced to some new character arcs, small ones, but nevertheless meaningful to the story. If I had to pick a couple of side arcs that I loved while reading Bloodwitch, it would be Safi and Vaness’. The respect that blossoms in that relationship as well as Safi’s own struggles with the realities of her world are so raw and gut wrenching. Lots of betrayal happening there, and so many hidden motivations. I wanted to keep reading more of these, but the teasing tidbits throughout the story were very well placed within the timeline of what’s happening in the story.

I’m trying not to be too spoilery, because the book hasn’t been out very long, but Merik’s arc was so heart-rending. Although most of these characters are going through some awful things, I think Merik was truly in the thick of it in Bloodwitch. Not only was he in physical torture, but he’s also agonising mentally and part of me just wanted to protect him from everything. Needless to say, I felt very connected to Merik in Bloodwitch. And Safi. And Iseult. And of course Aeduan.

How Susan Dennard keeps track of all of the things happening at once is amazing. In other fantasy stories I’ve read, it can be very difficult to keep switching back and forth between different characters and points of view, but she does it so flawlessly. She could be argued to be a weaverwitch, pulling on her loom to seal the fates of her characters in one way or another.

The ending of Bloodwitch was so devastating and satisfying at the same time. Readers will set this down and want the next book, if only to know what happens to certain characters. I know I really do. There wasn’t anything about the story that I didn’t like, aside from the fact that I want to know what happens next. You can’t leave us like this Sooz! More importantly, now we must wait for another year (hopefully) to find out what happens next in the Witchlands.

I’d rate this book a 10/10. I was captivated from beginning to end, wishing I were part of the Witchlands. All these lands are in turmoil, and our characters play pivotal roles in the potential re-shaping of a world. I love that I get to sit there with popcorn and watch it unfold in front of my very eyes.
