Article contributed by Jasmina Demirovska

Saru, Dr. Culber and Adira are still with Su’Kal, even though the radiation is getting worse. Michael has been captured by Zareh when she sent Stamets out of the Discovery, and the crew gets help from the sphere data in form of the DOT-23’s.

On the dilithium encased planet Saru tries to get closer to Su’Kal to prepare him for the inevitable departure from this planet. The Admiral fights against Osyraa and opens fire on the Discovery. Book and Michael are captured on the bridge. Book revealed that he knows how to get the dilithium out of the planet without being destroyed by the radiation, and Osyraa wants to torture him to get the information out of him.

Meanwhile, they find out that the crew is heading to the bridge and shut off the oxygen for them slowly. Thanks to Michael’s emergency call to her mother, Ni’Var ships have come to help the Federation defeat Osyraa. Osyraa has no other chance but to hail the Admiral and let Michael talk to him. Michael tries to persuade him to trust her and cease fire. He obliges.

As the ship breaks apart by Su’Kal’s scream, Saru attempts to calm him down by telling him that Saru, too, is a Kelpien. He wants Su’Kal to turn off the holo’s so he sees the truth, but he is too afraid of the outside.

On the Discovery, Osyraa tortures Book. Only when Michael starts to get desperate, Osyraa lets her persuade him to reveal the information. When Michael gets close enough to him, she activates a magnetic field around them and they escape. Michael sends a secret message to the crew. Tilly understands that she wants them to go to a nacelle and blow up something inside the magnetic field, so they will stop the warp and their allies can catch up to them. However, getting there without oxygen seems like a suicide mission. As they make their way through the halls, only Owo is strong enough to still walk, while the others are slowly suffocating. They urge her to leave them behind and finish the mission.

The Reason for the Burn

While the crew is fighting to get back the ship, Adira, Culber and Gray who can be seen by everyone because the holo allows it to happen, talk about Su’Kal and the connection to the Burn. Culber theorises that Su’Kal might have a genetic disorder which leads him to feel deeply connected to dilithium and subspace. Because of the amount of dilithium on this planet, his distress when he saw his mother die, is the reason for the Burn. The only solution to preventing another Burn is to get Su’Kal away from the dilithium. They try to persuade Su’Kal into turning off the holo’s, and after a lot of talking, he trusts them enough to do so. He sees Saru for the first time as his own species, namely Kelpien.

Being surrounded by too many enemies, Book tries to fight of Zareh and his men, while Michael needs to go to the data core quickly. There, Osyraa has already been waiting for Michael and fights her. After much fighting Michael kills Osyraa and gets back the control of the ship. Owo finally manages to deploy the bomb, and a DOT-23 drags her out of there into safety, even though the magnetic field destroys it. The ship’s warp system is destroyed. Back in the hall, Owo wakes up to see that every crew member has survived. They make their way back to the bridge.

Jumping without Stamets

With all the regulators gone, the crew’s only task is it to get out of the Viridian, Osyraa’s ship, into which she commanded the Discovery should pull into when they lost their warp. Michael wants to eject the warp core and blow their way out of the Viridian. Afterwards, the plan is to jump away and to the nebula, with Book instead of Stamets. Osyraa’s scientist Aurellio has switched sides and believes that Book, because of him being Kweijan, can communicate with species including the spore drive. Their plan succeeds, and they jump into the nebula. The Discovery finds Saru and the others, and beams them up, bringing Su’kal into the outside for the first time.

The crew flies back to the Federation headquarters. The Chain fell apart after Osyraa died, and the Federation is growing. Saru steps back from his position as Captain to return to Kaminar and help Su’Kal build his new life. Michael talks to the Admiral, who offers her the position as a Captain on the Discovery, bringing the planets the dilithium the Federation will mine.

The end of season three.

Overall Thoughts?

Well, for a finale that was only okay. I expected more from this season of Star Trek Discovery, as I thought that season one and two were great. This season focused too much on Michael in my opinion. Miraculously, she always found a solution to problems that seemed impossible. I also find it a bit odd that all of a sudden Book can jump and communicate with the spore drive. But nevertheless, it was still interesting to watch. Other than the previous season finales, this one did not end on a cliffhanger, but more on an actual Star Trek like future mission. Season four is already in the making, approximately finishing production mid 2021. Are you excited already?

Osyraa has taken the Discovery, while Saru, Dr. Culber and Adira stay on the planet with Su’Kal. Will the crew get back their ship?

Osyraa jumped to the Federation headquarters and fights the system to get in. The Admiral does not yet know that she is on the Discovery, and thinks that she is on another ship. She acts as if her own ship is attacking the Discovery to get inside the headquarters. However, the Admiral does not let the Discovery pass, yet. While they fight, the bridge crew and Captain Tilly are held hostages in the dining room.

Meanwhile, Book and Michael travel through the courier network in Book’s ship to help the Discovery.

The Admiral opens up a portal just big enough for the Discovery to slip through the shields, as he does not want the ship to be destroyed. At this moment, Book’s ship is entering the surface, but Michael cannot contact HQ because the comm got burned. Michael wants to get back on the Discovery because they suspect that Osyraa might try to attack once she has entered the HQ. They manage to dock Book’s ship onto the Discovery. Zareh (the guy that should have died in the ice desert in episode 2) sends his men to inspect Book’s ship and take care of the invaders.

Osyraa enters Stamet’s lab where a man in a wheelchair, apparently the best scientist in Osyraa’s chain, waits for her and admires the 900-year old technology. His job is to figure out how the spore drive works.

Michael wants to find Stamets because Osyraa cannot jump without him. Book gives her a concealing device that hides her life sign from the system. Book stays behind to distract Zareh’s men.

Because Osyraa’s ship is not doing anything to get into he headquarters, and because there is only one ship, the Admiral suspects that there has to be something wrong. He quickly deduces that Osyraa must have taken the Discovery and aims the Federation’s weapons at the Discovery. Osyraa sends a message to the Admiral explaining that she wants to talk to him about peace. He lets her get to the HQ with a shuttle.

Back on the ship, Zareh has captured Book and brings them to the other hostages. He lets Tilly know that Michael is out there. Meanwhile, Michael attacked one enemy who stabs her in the leg. She manages to strangle him and make him unconscious, and takes his comms badge. She is hiding and sending a message to her mother about what is happening, asking for help. She then makes her way to Stamets as she hears Zareh say that the scientist, called Aurellio, wants to take off the neural lock of Stamets, making him able to gain control over himself again.

The bridge crew is not allowed to communicate while they are being held hostages but manage to do so through morse code. They act as if they are about to argue with each other in order to distract the guards, and manage to incapacitate them. Tilly asks Ryn to hack into the computer, and order the rest of them to either listen to the comms or barricade the doors.

In the headquarters, the Admiral and Osyraa negotiate the terms of releasing the bridge crew with an AI holo designed to detect lies. Osyraa says she will speak the truth and that she intends to unite the Emerald Chain with the Federation so they can survive together, even without dilithium. She argues that with the Federation’s spore drive and her scientific institutions they can advance together, for the good of the people. According to the lie detector AI her intentions are pure.

During the discussions, Zareh is in charge on the Discovery. They have found the unconscious enemy and know that someone has taken his badge. They look for the badge and know where Michael is hiding and try to trap her. In the engineering lab, Aurellio takes off Stamets neural lock, making him conscious again. Stamets tries to sympathise with him by saying he has family who he cares for, so he does not get killed. Aurellio tries to get information about the spore drive from him. He says that they will not have to kill Stamets in order to get his DNA for the spore drive, with their technology.

Zareh talks to Michael through the comms badge. They are almost at her position when she begins to tie herself to the ship. Michael opens the hatch so her enemies get sucked out of the ship. She barely manages to hold on before the vents close themselves again.

Ryn tells the bridge crew that they will have to get going, while Book stays behind to buy them some time. Ryn manipulated the system so their life signs will go under thousands of life signs projected.

Osyraa wants the Admiral to acknowledge that capitalism is already happening within the Federation, and to acknowledge that their culture is important. In turn she wants to outlaw slavery, having enough support on her side. The Admiral further wants her to step away from Kweijan and the other planets so he has enough to get the Federation’s president in. They are interrupted by their assistants telling them what happened at the Discovery and of the woman sucked out of the ship. Osyraa wants the President to sign a contract she brought with her, quickly. The Admiral starts reading it.

Stamets tries to talk to Aurellio telling him what Osyraa did to Kweijan, forcing them to extinct one of their species and getting them into famine. Aurellio does not believe him at first but shows doubts about Osyraa, because he believes that she has only good intentions for the world. Stamets warns him that even though she appears to be nice to him, she is two-faced. In this moment, Michael enters the room and stuns Aurellio and the guards unconscious. Michael wants to get Stamets off the ship, but he wants to jump back to the nebula immediately, to get back Adira and Hugh. Michael has to perform the Vulcan Nerve Pinch on him to get him off the ship, as he grows more and more panicked wanting to save his family.

While the Admiral acknowledges that the contract Osyraa made is real, he asks her who the face of this new Federation should be. Osyraa says that it can certainly not be herself because of her reputation, but wants Aurellio to be the face of the Chain. When the Admiral asks her if he would not just be her proxy she says no, but the AI catches her lie. The Admiral says that the face has to function independently of Osyraa and has to punish her for her well-documented crimes. This enrages her and she leaves the room and comes back to the ship.

Back on the Discovery, Book and Ryn have been caught. Osyraa warns Zareh to get back the hostages and Stamets or he will die within the next ten minutes, because he should have done a better job. Aurellio witnesses this and asks her to not use violence. He stays at the bridge and sees her kill Ryn, because he does not help her fix the sensors. Before she kills him, Book wants to save him by revealing his knowledge about how to get in and out of the nebula to get dilithium, in an attempt to save Ryn’s life. She orders her crew to jump out of there.

Michael uses an emergency capsule to get Stamets out of the ship and forcefully opens an airlock. Stamets begs her not to do this so they can get Hugh and Adira, crying that they even came to the future for her. But she does not budge. When he got out, Zareh finds her. The bridge crew gets more weapons and plan to take over the bridge when three little robots come into the room. Tilly quickly realises that these are the sphere data hiding in these robots called DOT-23’s. The sphere data wants to help them take back the ship.

Overall Thoughts?

Wow, so much has happened in this episode. The producers once again manage to surprise the audience with Osyraa. It is a bit odd that she uses the methods she does because she genuinely wants peace. Taking into consideration that she wants to have power too, of course. But as only one episode is left in this season, we can only ask ourselves if this peace treaty will be accepted by the president. Also, will the crew get back their ship? What will happen to Saru, Dr. Culber and Adira? Finally, will Stamets ever forgive Michael?

Article contributed by Jasmina Demirovska

During Georgiou’s memorial service, Grey is finally revealing himself to Adira again. He apologises for leaving them, but explains that he did not know how to feel as it is not natural that only Adira can see and talk to him. He was simply upset.

In this moment Stamets gets the signal that they have found a life sign in the ship that has crashed and sent a distress signal just before the Burn. Everyone is shocked, as it has been 200 years since the crash, but Saru tells them that Dr. Issa has been pregnant, so it must be the child who survived. The Discovery immediately jumps to the Verubin Nebula to look for the ship, but the radiation storm is too strong for the Discovery to navigate through it. Book offers to go with his ship, as his is smaller and can morph. But even he has difficulties getting through it unharmed. He transmits the coordinates and finds a spot for the Discovery to jump to safely, and gets back to it. Culber has to tend to Book, though.

Meanwhile, Tilly finds out that the Khi’eth crashed into dilithium, because the planet is made out of it. Michael concludes that this planet has to be the source of the Burn.

Worry

Saru, Michael and Tilly talk to the Admiral and reveal what they have found. Even though the radiation is very high, inside the crashed ship the radiation should be low enough for the Discovery to save Dr. Issa’s child. Saru intends to accompany Michael during this mission, and leaves Tilly the command. Before ending the call, The Admiral tells Saru that the Chain is doing military exercises at Kaminar, Saru’s home planet. They think that it is a trap to lure the Discovery because Osyraa wants their spore drive, so the Admiral does not want to involve the Discovery.

Before leaving, Michael worries that Saru might not be fit enough to go on the mission with them because he might need to make a hard call when it comes to the Kelpien. Book encourages Michael to be there for Saru if he might need her. Meanwhile, Stamets argues with Culber, because he does not want Culber to join the mission, as he does not trust the Kelpien. According to him, the odds to survive that long are vanishingly small, so he suspects that there might be something wrong. But Culber wants to go because he sees it as his purpose to help a survivor that has been alone for too long.

The Planet

As they land on the planet, Saru, Burnham and Culber have transformed into another species and lost all of their communication devices, weapons and uniform. Michael has become Trill, Culber is now Bajoran, and Saru has become a human. They conclude that they must have landed inside the ship because the radiation would have killed them already if they were outside. Culber recommends to bring back the ship as scheduled within four hours, in order for them to survive. They hear a voice and follow it only to discover that a program has started. Saru tells the computer’s hologram what they are up to, and the computer tells them that they are in the wrong program. Burnham says that this might be the reason they have changed, because the computer thinks they are part of a program. They want to follow the holo’s lead to find the life sign.

By investigating further, they find the Kelpien and a closed door. The door starts to rattle as Saru explains the Kelpien why they are here. The Kelpien gets scared and runs away from the door, thinking that there is a monster inside. Culber thinks that the Kelpien is the only life sign here, so the monster has to be a holo. He cautions Saru and Burnham to be careful, as he might be mentally fragile. Burnham agrees and thinks that the Kelpien might not even know anything else but the program, so they have to deal with him as they would with a child. Burnham wants to stay and guard the door, while Saru and Culber look for the Kelpien.

Back on the Discovery, Stamets orders the team to get the shields back up so they can jump into the nebula again to get them. They can hear Burnham, but cannot respond to her. Tilly wants Stamets to take full power and get the shields back up, when they discover that a Federation ship is approaching them. Tilly hails them but they are not responding, only sending back the correct codes.

Holo’s and Su’Kal

Saru and Culber find a holo that shows the day Kaminar joined the Federation. The holo wants to help find the child.

Burnham goes into the room and finds the monster. She drops the stone she has been holding and introduces herself to it. It charges and follows Burnham. Burnham falls off the stairs but something drags her into the sky.

Tilly concludes that the ship that has masked itself as a Federation ship is actually Osyraa. Tilly orders to cloak the ship, making them invisible, but in this state they cannot jump if something should happen.

Burnham awakes to see the Kelpien. The Kelpien asks if she is a program and she says that she is one teaching the dynamics of social interaction. He thinks that the Outside might be dead because he did not hear of it for a long time now. Michael acts as if she initiates the program and the Kelpien sits with her.

Saru and Culber find an elder. They also find a drawing with a family of Kelpiens. The drawing is called ‘Su’Kal’ and they figure that this must be the name of the child. They ask the elder where Su’Kal might be. He reveals that Dr. Issa created the holos to raise and protect Su’Kal. There is a forest where he goes to when he is afraid.

Burnham tries to find out about Su’Kal’s past before the holos but he panics and goes away again. The mission crew finds radiation injures on their hands, so the time is running. The elder tells Saru that Su’Kal has to face his deepest fears or else he will not leave this place.

Losing Control

Osyraa hails the Discovery, but has not fired yet because she probably needs the ship whole. Osyraa tries to make Tilly uncomfortable and lose her confidence. Osyraa wants the ship, the crew and the spore drive.

While Su’Kal builds a totem to protect himself from the monster, Burnham, Saru and Culber watch him. Su’Kal’s scream destabilises the dilithium within the Discovery and decloaks both ships, meaning that he almost caused another Burn. Book leaves to get the others with his own ship, while Tilly wants to jump away from Osyraa.

In order to calm Su’Kal, Saru starts soothing him by singing a lullaby. The disruption stops which makes Osyraa hail the Discovery again. Tilly goes so far as to tell Osyraa that she will self-destruct the ship before she lets her get it. Two people have beamed themselves into the capsule where Stamets wanted to jump away and hold him. More enemies enter the ship elsewhere.

Book tells Michael that he is on his way. They suspect that something might have triggered Su’Kal as a child to cause the Burn. Saru wants Michael to stay on this planet to help Su’Kal not cause another Burn, but Michael says it has to be Saru. Because of the lullaby they have a connection. Dr. Culber wants to stay too. He does not want Su’Kal or Saru to be alone. They will die if Burnham does not come back more than a day later.

Book discovers Adira in his ship. They have beamed themselves there with medication against the radiation and take a pill. They beam themselves on the planet.

Someone puts a device on Stamets’ head which causes him to lose control over his own body and mind. Osyraa beams herself into the control room and takes the crew’s badges and control over the Discovery. She jumps away to Federation headquarters. When Book and Michael arrive at the Discovery, they are too late.

Overall Thoughts

Wow, what a twist! Finally, the cause of the Burn has been revealed. It was a bit unexpected for me that the cause was a distressed child. What made this episode interesting though, was not the reveal of the Burn in my opinion. Osyraa coming after the Discovery after seemingly leading the Admiral to the conclusion that she is at Kaminar and taking control over the ship when Tilly is captain made it exciting. I am really looking forward to see how they will beat Osyraa and take back the ship. Also, I hope that Saru, Adira and Culber survive on the planet and come back in the next episode.

During ‘Terra Firma, Part 1’ Georgiou finds herself in her own parallel universe, where she is still the Emperor, with this being the only chance for her to find a cure for her disease. Having the knowledge of Burnham’s and Lorca’s betrayal already, she gets Burnham arrested and into the agonizer, after a failed attempt to assassinate Georgiou.

Michael gets thrown into a cell, where she continues to tell Georgiou that she is weak. In her rant, Michael says that the Romulans, the Andorians, the Tellarites and the Klingons are forming an alliance to destroy them, called the Coalition. Burnham wants to attack first, but she gets thrown into the agonizer, because Georgiou thinks this Michael will only learn from pain.

Co-conspirators

Killy (this universe’s Tilly) enters the Emperor’s chambers to ask why Michael is not dead, yet. Georgiou wants to change the course of this universe’s future, and wants Killy to turn Michael into a loyal subject for her, in order to send a message to her co-conspirators, which Killy believes involves Detmer. In a monologue, Georgiou says that terror is love, but she wants Michael back. Georgiou has clearly changed throughout her time in the other universe, and she wants this universe to become better than they are now.

After trying to break Michael, Detmer comes to the cell to ask Michael to give in, because they cannot endure more and have not heard anything from Lorca. While Michael sleeps, Georgiou also visits her in the cell. She tells a sleeping Michael that she had night terrors as a kid and once sleepwalked into a field of fireflies. Georgiou then sets down a glass sphere full of fireflies, which shows that Georgiou actually loves Michael as her own daughter. Michael awakes and starts to eat for the first time since she got into the cell, although we do not know how much time has passed until then.

Burnham finally swears allegiance to the Emperor and apologises. This is not enough for Georgiou and she demands that Michael makes amends with everyone on the ship. Michael suggests to kill the other traitors herself to prove her loyalty, and is allowed to get assistance from Detmer. She kills Landry, Bryce and a lot more. After showing this to her mother, she also kills Detmer in front of her.

Burnham and Georgiou eat together in Georgiou’s chambers. Michael admits to not know the whereabouts of Lorca but wants to find him, because he left her to die. Georgiou tasks Burnham with the finding of Lorca.

Saru brushes the Emperor’s hair when he tells her that Vahar’ai is coming for him, so he might not remain in her services for too long, and wants Georgiou to be the one to kill him. But, as we know, Vahar’ai is not what he believes it is. Georgiou tells him that he will only be insane for a few days, and will be normal again afterwards. She tells him that the other universe’s Saru survived the Vahar’ai and even was a captain of a Starfleet ship. This Saru tells Georgiou to return to where she is from, because he suspects that she is not Terran. He tells her that so she can survive. But she counters that this is her home and she will change her home to what she wants and needs it to be, in order to survive.

The Showdown

One of Lorca’s top lieutenants, Duggan, sent a coded message to Lorca’s alias. They immediately travel to Risa, the location where the message is from. Duggan knows that they are here. They quickly disable his ship but keep him alive. Duggan sends a transmission where he tells Georgiou that Lorca has made new friends, mainly Romulans and Klingons. He wants them to fight against the Emperor together. They bring Duggan aboard and into a cell.

Michael kills Duggan and aims her weapon at Georgiou, while other traitors kill some of the Emperor’s guard which Georgiou foresaw. Killy and others were in hiding, and have now opened fire. Even the Kelpiens fight for the Emperor. Georgiou fights against Burnham. Georgiou kills Michael with a sword, but Michael also stabs the Emperor in her neck.

Back Again

Georgiou wakes up in Burnham’s arms. She demands to know who Carl is, and if all what she has been through these last months was real. According to the device on her arm, there is bio data for three months, so apparently it was real. But, Georgiou is not cured. Now Michael demands to know who Carl is, and he introduces himself as the Guardian of Forever. Another portal is opened.

Back on the Discovery, Stamets and Adira try to find more information about the distress signal sent by Kelpiens 125 years ago. Book enters and knows why they could not hack into the ship. He received a tool from the Emerald Chain that might help.

Michael asks the Guardian of Forever what he actually is and does. He says that he is in hiding, because as a space-time portal, people have tried to use him in wars to kill everyone else. Only the sphere data could track down his location. Carl tells Georgiou that she was not sent back to be cured but weighed and tested. To see if the time in this universe has changed her or not. Philippa tried but failed to save her daughter. But Carl says that she actually tried for peace and saved at least the Kelpiens. He opened this portal to help Georgiou this time, and wants her to walk through it. He wants to send her back to the time where the mirror universe and the prime universe were still aligned, thus curing her. Carl leaves.

Georgiou and Michael have to say goodbye. Georgiou tells Michael that she is thankful for her time here, and that they have changed her for the better. Georgiou steps through the portal and it closes.

The Admiral is not happy about the discovery’s approach to get the data with the Chain’s technology and warns them to be cautious because of their spore drive. He fears that Osyraa might get to it. He also warns Book to follow Starfleet protocol if he wants to stay at the Discovery. The Admiral gives Adira and Stamets the permission to use the tech under supervision. They end the conversation when Burnham beams back into the ship by herself.

Book quickly looks for Michael to comfort her. As she beamed into the ship herself, everyone that knew about the mission thinks that Georgiou is dead. Saru asks if Georgiou is deceased, but Michael just answers that she will never return. Dr. Culber makes a toast and Tilly follows, admiring that nothing intimated her, that she was always honest and a badass.

Overall Thoughts

In my opinion, this was by far the best episode in this season. I will definitely miss Philippa Georgiou as a character, as Michelle Yeoh played this badass (to quote Tilly) so well. This episode was full of twists, which could not be foreseen, especially with the Guardian of Forever. I am excited to see if the Discovery will need his help once more in the future, as only he can bring them back to their own timeline, or even help prevent the Burn.

Osyraa’s secret that the Emerald Chain is running out of dilithium got out, so what will the consequences be?

Dr. Culber talks to the man that investigated Georgiou before, in order to talk about her illness. The problem seems to be that Georgiou traveled not only through time, like everybody of the crew did, but she also travelled through dimensions as she is from a parallel universe. The man advises Culber not to tell Georgiou anything, because her Terrarian instinct will drive her to find a way to die in battle. The computer offers another solution.

In the dining room, Georgiou is seen not being able to grab her glass, as the molecules seem to be dividing. Before Georgiou starts a fight with Tilly, Michael interrupts her to escort her to Culber. The computer found a cure for her condition on a planet called Dannus V, but the chance for her survival are only 5%. The Admiral, Culber, Michael and Saru discuss what to do next. Saru wants the crew to be ready to face the Chain near Argeth, instead of helping Georgiou. However, the Admiral authorises the mission to go to Dannus V, but warns Burnham to let Georgiou go if need be. Everyone but Saru is dismissed. The Admiral asks him what Saru would have done in his situation. Saru replies that he would have made a different choice. The Admiral reminds him that he should not forget that neglecting one crew member can lead to the entirety of the crew seeing him in a different light.

Phillipa is in the gym boxing, when Burnham wants to persuade her to trust the mission. Instead, Phillipa wants to start a fight with Burnham, in order to die in a fight. She even holds a sword to Michael’s throat, but Michael doesn’t budge. Wearing a ‘death clock’ which tells her when the time has come, Phillipa and Michael get ready for the mission.

Distress Call

Meanwhile, Adira and Stamets found a distress call. Adira seems to be missing Gray and was unable to sleep in the last days, which led to some mistakes on their side. They call Saru. While Saru is making his way over, Book stops him to ask if he might be of any help when they deal with the Emerald Chain again. Saru wants to rely on protocols, instead of Couriers like Book suggested, and turns him down.

On Dannus V, Michael and Phillipa walk through the snow to find the cure. They encounter a man sitting on an armchair reading a newspaper which says that Emperor Georgiou died of a horrible death. He introduces himself as Carl and shows them a portal. He advises Georgiou to go through it, while Burnham doesn’t detect anything out of the ordinary. They do not know what will happen on the other side of the door.

Back on the Discovery, Adira and Stamets encoded the distress signal, which shows a Kelpien, Dr. Issa, asking for help. They have been stranded somewhere for 100 years. The Khi’eth are still broadcasting this signal, so Saru wants them to analyse the signal further and to report it to the Admiral once they have more information.

Emperor Georgiou

Phillipa goes through the portal alone and finds herself on her own ship in her Terran uniform. Her old crew welcomes her. It seems that Georgiou is reliving a part of her live, the day of Lorca’s betrayal to be precise. Michael and Lorca have a relationship in this universe, and have plotted against the Emperor together. Phillipa wants to persuade Michael to change her mind, instead of punishing her right away for the treason she commits.

Kelpiens are slaves in this universe, so they serve drinks and food during what seems to be a welcoming party for the Emperor. However, one Kelpien accidentally spills a drink on someone’s shoe and is immediately taken away and sentenced to a cruel death. Another Kelpien, which seems to be this universe’s Saru, brings Michael wine. To which she responds that no one asked for it, so he will face the same fate as his Kelpien friend. Georgiou, being softer through all her experiences, stops Burnham, and takes Saru away from her as her slave. Instead, she disguises this as punishment for Saru, saying that he will wish he was dead when she is done with him.

In her chambers, Georgiou talks to Saru. The other Kelpien was in the stage of Vahar’ai. In this universe, they tell the Kelpien that they kill them during this stage as they will get insane afterwards. But actually, Kelpiens only get rid of their ganglia, which is an organ responsible for their response to fear and threat. When they lose the ganglia, they no longer have a high rate of fear. Thus, they pose a bigger threat to their masters. Saru tells Georgiou that Michael and Lorca plot her death, because she seems to have changed. Georgiou then wants Saru to be her spy.

The Assassination

A dedication ceremony for the Emperor begins. It starts with a play about the Emperor’s life. The crew shows her their new flagship, the Charon. The Emperor stands to give a speech, and Stamets, who was the play’s narrator, stands beside her. He slowly approaches Georgiou with a knife in his hand, but before he can strike, Georgiou already stabs him in the neck. Watching this unfold, Burnham grows more and more mad. But she hails Georgiou after her failed attempt.

When Burnham leaves the room, Tilly and the others corner Burnham and take away her weapons. Georgiou tells her to confess to her crimes and she will spare her life. Michael only says that Georgiou’s weakness is growing. As Georgiou asks Burnham why she did that, Burnham replies that she is nothing but a reflection of Phillipa, merely a tool. Lorca however, loves her for herself.

Michael dares Phillipa to execute her, but Phillipa only scrapes her neck. Phillipa does not kill Burnham in this scenario, because she wants to know what will happen if Burnham still lives. Instead, Burnham is taken to the agonizer.

Overall Thoughts

Oh my, the evilness is back everyone. For the first time in this season, we get to see the opposite of what the Discovery stands for, and I especially like seeing the actors variety here. Seeing the evil Burnham again makes this episode so much more exciting, in my opinion. Also, confident Tilly still being loyal to the Emperor shows that loyalty is a trait Tilly doesn’t lose in any scenario we have seen so far. Even if it means betraying her friend and roommate, as we’ve seen in the past.

Because this episode has ended so abruptly in the portal, I guess we will see more of this alternative universe for at least one more episode. It will be interesting to see how it all connects in the bigger picture, maybe it even has something to do with the Burn?

After the successful T’Kal-in-ket and being reunited with her mother, Michael decided to stay with her crew and the Discovery, finally feeling like she belongs again.

Episode 8 begins with Georgiou, seeming to have told the Discovery’s primary physician Culber that she experiences black outs, and he wants to get to the depth of it. However, Georgiou is not making it easy for him, barely revealing any information. Culber warns her about her condition and she lets him examine her.

While Culber examines Georgiou, Book finds Michael at the corridor and hastily tells her that he has to go home to Kweijan. Apparently, Osyraa and the Emerald Chain got to the planet. Michael suggests to get help since the planet is two weeks away at full warp. They ask the Admiral for help. Saru suggests to go there as observers and the Admiral agrees under the condition to jump away when they feel threatened.

We finally get a first look at Osyraa, and see Tolor from episode six, who wanted to trade dilithium with Georgiou and Michael, who were actually looking for Book and the black box. During their fight in episode six, a few of the captured fled and one of them was Ryn. Osyraa asks about him. But she already knows that he left with Book. Osyraa kills Tolor by feeding him to a Tranceworm, a creature Book tamed in the first episode.

The Data

Stamets and Adira analyse the Ni’var data and comes to a conclusion that the Burn started in the Verubin Nebula. They not only find the point of origin but also a signal coming out of the nebula. The signal sounds like music, it is the melody that Adira played on the cello and the Barzan family hummed. Saru reacts to the signal and after combining the melody with a star near the nebula, they find a Federation’s distress signal, meaning that a ship must have sent the signal and is lost there.

After Saru and Tilly leave the room, Adira corrects Stamets when he said “she” can find an algorithm. Adira prefers the pronouns “them” or “they”, and Stamets responds with a heartwarming “okay”.

Later, Adira reveals that Gray is not talking to them anymore. Stamets says that maybe Gray needs some space.

The crew gets ready for the jump to Kweijan. They do not get a response when hailing Kweijan. An armed ship approaches them, so Saru sends Book and Michael to the planet. Meanwhile, Ryn demands to speak to the captain as he wants to leave the ship, because he doesn’t trust the Federation.

Michael and Book reached the Sanctuary. Some people cornered Book and Michael. As it turns out, the leader of this group is Book’s brother, Kyheem.

As Culber examines Georgiou, she is having another episode. Georgiou is seeing a dead person, and screams “San”. With that scream she awakes and hurries away.

The Enemy

Book and Kyheem argue. Kyheem doesn’t want the Federations help, but he seems to work with Osyraa. Osyraa apparently demands to get Ryn, who is currently at the Discovery.

Osyraa’s ship arrived at the Discovery and scans the ship. Saru wants Michael and Book to come back and tries to get a message to them, while Osyraa is hailing the crew. Osyraa calls Ryn a wanted criminal, demanding to get him transported to her immediately. According to Osyraa, Ryn has signed a contract and broken it. Saru reminds her that this is slavery. She threatens the Discovery to transport Ryn to her vessel within five minutes, or she will destroy the Discovery and Kweijan.

Osyraa talks to Kyheem. Kyheem mentions bringing Book to Kweijan was his end of the bargain, so Osyraa now wants Ryn, Book and Michael. He refuses, so she threatens to cut Kweijan off from her help through the harvest, meaning famine. As Kyheem doesn’t budge, Osyraa opens fire on the planet, burning the beautiful forests.

Saru demands to know why Ryn is so important to Osyraa, but he won’t tell them.

Philippa is overwriting a security code and takes a look at her medical record, which is completely red, which probably means that she is in a critical condition. Culber finds her, while Philippa just wanted to run off to help Michael.

Kweijan’s defence system gets destroyed, so Burnham and Book want to repair it, while the Discovery tries to find them to get the messages to them and get them back on the ship. As the Discovery cannot find them, Ryn says that he knows where to find them. He wants to help them for Book’s sake. As the Discovery is at the scene under the condition to only observe, they are not allowed to shoot Osyraa’s ship. So Tilly suggests to use a non-federation ship to shoot. Detmer and Ryn fly Book’s ship and open fire on Osyraa’s ship.

Kyheem sends his people to get Book, as Osyraa demanded. But Michael and Book fight their way out, until Kyheem shows up himself and starts fighting Book. Kyheem almost kills Book, but Michael stops him.

Osyraa hails the Discovery after Detmer damaged her ship quite severely. Osyraa only says that she will have her revenge and bring down the Discovery and the Federation and vanishes.

The Discovery helps Kyheem with Kweijan’s harvest, by moving the locusts. When the work is done, Ryn reveals to Tilly that the reason Osyraa wants him back is his knowledge about their dilithium. The Chain is running out, and he was the only one to know.

Overall Thoughts

So, we finally got to see the enemy’s face and a battle between her and the Discovery. Personally, I think that Osyraa did not make much of an impact, at least not as much as the other enemies in the earlier seasons, but we will see what tricks she has under her sleeves, hopefully.

It is also beautiful to see that the series is introducing a character under their preferred pronouns, proving once again that the series is tackling important issues while entertaining their audience.

In the last episode Burnham and Georgiou went to look after Book and a black box, which might help them find new evidence about the Burn.

This episode starts with Michael, who says that she is not sure if she still belongs to the crew and the Federation, as she has changed so much during the year she has been without them. Book would want to leave the Federation and go somewhere else, together with Michael.

Michael reveals her insecurities to Tilly while Tilly is analysing the black box. Tilly does not want to engage in too much conversation with Michael, as she is still upset about Michael leaving without telling her. They find that an experiment called SB-19 seemingly didn’t report any data to the Federation, so they hope that by looking at the data, they can pinpoint the location of the Burn more exactly. Up until then, they only have a point in two dimensions, but not in three.

Michael and Saru talk to the Admiral about this, and he reveals that they will not get the data from the planet Ni’var, or formerly known as Vulcan, as they have left the Federation. Ni’var is also the planet of not only Vulcans, but also Romulans, who have been enemies in the past. But Spock, as an Ambassador, reunited these two nations on the planet. The SB-19 was essentially an experiment with the goal to find a new way to transport ships in an instant — like the spore drive — but the scientists explained that the experiment is too dangerous. The Federation forced them to continue, as dilithium got more scarce and they needed the system, until something went wrong. The inhabitants of Ni’var now believe that the Federation forced them to cause the Burn with their experiment.

The Admiral wants to send Michael as Spock’s sister to open discussions and reveal their own findings in order to get the data from SB-19.

While getting ready to jump to Ni’var, Saru approaches Tilly to ask her to be his First Officer only until he found a proper replacement for Burnham. Tilly is taken aback by his request, because she is only an ensign and does not feel ready yet. But Saru believes that it is in the best interest of the crew. Tilly goes to Stamets to reveal her insecurities and Saru’s request, but Stamets has to go back to work.

They jump to Ni’var and talk to T’rina, the president of Ni’var via transmission. She is honoured to speak to Burnham, but immediately denies access to SB-19 because the reunification is still vulnerable politically and culturally.

Michael practically forces T’rina to hear her out by invoking the traditional T’kal-in-ket, a philosophical trial to get to know the truth, which cannot be denied. Michael has to defend her assumptions in front of the scientific institute, and gets an advocate to help her out. Since the joining of Romulans and Vulcans only sisters from the Qovat Mulat can be advocates. The advocates that had an interest in Burnham according to the President, and who will help Burnham during her trial, is her mother.

While preparing for the trial on board of the Discovery, Saru shows the President around and tells her that the Federation surely feels the loss of Ni’var. He hopes that they might start diplomatic discussions again after Michael’s trial. The President answers that they might need more than that, because SB-19 was merely the final blow, and they had more complications with the Federation. The President thinks that the rarity of dilithium was only caused by the Federation and their many members. The Federation wanted to please everyone, so they dismissed smaller issues in her eyes.

Michael’s mother tells her that her case is lost, because the sisters of the Qovat Milat only take on lost causes. Michael reveals that she does not know if she belongs here anymore. Her mother gives her the advice that she should be true to herself.

The T’kal-in-ket begins and Michael gets interrupted immediately, because one of the members wants to end the quorum as he says that there is not enough reason to be there. The other two hear Michael out for a few minutes, and contemplate whether they want to join her, as there might be the slightest chance that the Burn was not caused by them. As the discussion is getting heated, Michael’s mother wants to have a break as the advocate of the hearing.

Her mother once again urges Michael to be true to herself, and to reveal her thoughts even though they are private, as she can only tell the truth this way. She even goes so far as to say that Michael cannot be trusted if she does not reveal her insecurities, by which Michael is appalled.

Once the hearing started again, Michaels own mother attacks her claims revealing everything Michael said to her in private. She accuses Michael of being manipulated by the Federation, of not being truthful to her own self, and thinking that her mother would not fulfil her own duties as advocate so she can help Michael out. Michael starts crying and admits that she does not know why she feels like she does not belong, but that she fears that she will do something wrong and hurt her crew while doing so, after all they have been through. She finally speaks truthfully to the peers, and to Saru and the President who are watching in the background.

The member that interrupted her earlier wants to end the discussions once again, but another peer clearly decided that he trusts Michael and wants to share the data, so they know if they were at fault or not. The peer even says that if the Vulcans don’t want to share their data, the Romulans will. A fight almost breaks out, but Michael stops them by reminding them that this is not what Spock wanted. In order to not destroy the peace of Ni’var, Michael withdraws her request. Before leaving the room, she tells them that she will keep searching for evidence and share all her data with the Ni’var scientific institute.

After seeing Michael opening up, President T’rina decides that she wants to give Michael the data through her mother. Michael and her mother part ways once again, but now Michael knows where to find her.

Back on the ship, the bridge waits for Tilly to arrive. Stamets told everyone about Tilly’s news and everybody urges her to take the offer. They trust her so they want her to say ‘yes’.

The episode ends with Michael and Book. Michael now feels like she belongs to her crew again. Book does not know what he will do, now that Michael stays on the Discovery, but Michael feels like home to him.

Overall Thoughts

The heated discussions Vulcan style reminded me of the new Star Trek movies, where Spock gets mocked for being too emotional. I think they could have made the arguments seem to be even more logical and less emotional, but as some members of this board were Romulans, and not very logical-thinking Vulcans, it might make more sense like this. The new findings about the Burn are revealed very slowly in these past episodes, and I hope that we can soon see a big wave of revealing information that might shock us.

The Discovery is repaired and ready to start its first mission. Saru and the higher ups of the Federation discuss tasks during a meeting, and the Discovery is set to stay on alert, should the Federation need their spore drive. The Admiral expects the Emerald Chain to make a move within the next few hours, so they are on yellow alert.

Message

The crew tries out the new technology on the bridge when they get hailed by a ship outside of the Federation’s security system. It is Book’s cat, Grudge.

Michael and Saru got a message from Book, telling them that he knows of a black box they needed, and that he will retrieve it from Emerald Chain’s territory on Hunhau. He recorded this message in the case that he wouldn’t come back within 24 hours and send Grudge to the Discovery, which is the case now. However, they only got the message three weeks ago.

The black box contains the ship’s last moments, so if the Burn happened at one moment, like everyone think it did, every black box should have stopped recording at the exact same time.

During the year Burnham lived in this time zone, she found two black boxes that had stopped at another time, and now suspects that Book has found a third one, meaning new revelations about the Burn.

Michael wants to go to Hunhau, but as the Admiral has ordered the Discovery to stay alert and jump to Argeth anytime within the next 12 hours, Saru denies her request.

Behind Saru’s back, Burnham goes to Georgiou to ask her to come with her to Hunhau. Of course, she agrees.

Unsolicited Mission

They fly to Hunhau with Book’s ship, discussing the possibility of Burnham having a crush on Book, she firmly denies — maybe even a bit too firm. Georgiou suddenly has a flashback, seeing blood on her hands and a dead body which she calls “San”. She is clearly shocked by this but they have no time to discuss it, as they arrive on Hunhau and are being hailed. Philippa persuades the unknown person by saying that they have dilithium, so he lets them land.

Back at the Discovery, Grudge stays in Tilly’s room. Tilly looks for Burnham and quickly realises that she is not on the ship anymore. Meanwhile, Adira is redesigning the spore drive with nano gel, so Stamets would not have to use the shunts anymore.

We see Book on Hunhau, but a person injects everyone with a device on their neck. It is not revealed what this device is for, yet. Michael finds Book with a device, which Book usually used to find Grudge. The “workers” seem to be Osyraa’s slaves there, and Book is one of them. One of these workers gets caught stealing a water ration and gets killed while running through a fence.

Philippa is trying to buy Burnham some time, so she can speak to Book. They hug and Book tells her that he got the black box and that Burnham should get it from his quarters. She obviously would not want to leave him here and has an idea to get everyone out of there.

Saru talks to Tilly in private, about Michael. He asks her about Michael leaving and revealing that it was, in fact, against his orders. Saru says that he is not trusting her anymore, and probably couldn’t ever trust her again. Tilly tells Saru to tell the Admiral, because she thinks that the Discovery has a lot to proof and that the crew might be punished for Michael’s wrongdoings. But she thinks she would have done the same thing as Burnham.

A drone follows Burnham and Georgiou around, so they destroy it and build a weapon from scratch. Book has made a friend there, called Ryn. Ryn brings him the black box, and explains the plan to as many people as he could.

Saru tells the Admiral about Michael. The Admiral tells Saru to be ready to jump very soon.

Michael and Philippa get caught, while the enemy finds dilithium in the ship. He does not kill Michael and Georgiou yet as Michael says that Osyraa might not like that, if she wants to know their story first. During this, Book starts a fight — or shall I call it revolution — so its now a more even fight, while guards rush to the site. Philippa has another flashback and collapses while Burnham gets choked and urges her to get the controller for the fence, in which the slave died earlier. She manages to get up and get it, turning off the fence, so Book and the others can escape to the ship. Ryn takes a “bullet” for Book and gets injured, while the others can escape.

Consequences

Michael and Philippa start fighting the others from their ship, and beam Book and Ryn into the ship. Philippa destroys the other ships, and with it, the whole site.

Book gives the black box to Michael as they fly back to the Discovery. Michael then asks Philippa what is going on with her, and realises that she doesn’t know it herself. The flashbacks have been happening for a couple of weeks, but are getting worse. Philippa doesn’t want to tell anybody about this.

Stamets catches Adira talking to herself, but we know that she is talking to her boyfriend, Gray. She reveals it to him, and Stamets thinks that she is holding on to someone she loves. As he did before, when Hugh was dead. Stamets believes Adira, which clearly soothes her. Gray tells Adira that he likes Stamets. Adira then removes the spore drive control in Stamets arm.

Later, Stamets talks to Culber about Adira. He is grateful to her and wants to help her, because he was in the same position as her.

Back on the Discovery, Ryn is in sick bay and will probably survive. Burnham and Book walk to meet Saru. While in the elevator, Book and Michael have a moment and kiss.

Burnham and Saru talk to the Admiral. The Admiral says that he may have “deemed the intel worth the risk” if they would have asked him. Burnham tells the Admiral that she has looked for the source of the Burn for a year now, and that without knowing why it happened, the Federation can never be the same again. The Admiral leaves the punishment to Saru. Burnham does apologise to Saru, but he cannot trust her anymore and demotes her from being Number One to solely being a chief science officer. Michael tells him that he is doing the right thing. The End.

Overall Thoughts

This episode had more action than the last two or three episodes altogether, so it was more exciting again. The fight scenes reminded me a lot of the first episode, where Burnham met Book the first time. Also, we got to see Book again, which I hope to continue in future episodes, as the character has a lot of mysteries to solve, such as why Grudge is called a queen? It could only be a name for a cat, but I think there is more to it.

Also, the mystery surrounding Philippa’s condition is another exciting story to look forward to.

The crew finally arrives at the Federation headquarters and is amazed by their new technology. They do not yet know if the Federation still values the same morals, or if they have changed much.

First Impressions

Saru, Burnham and Adira Tal are being beamed to the headquarters and meet Charles Vance, the Admiral and Commander in Chief of Starfleet, and Chief Security Officer Lieutenant Willa. They are clearly suspicious of Saru, Burnham and Adira, and do not trust them yet. But the crew members tell them exactly what has happened to them, and how they got through the wormhole.

The Admiral explains that communication with Federation planets has been limited since the Burn, including the planet Kaminar, Saru’s home.

While Adira gets a full medical examination, Saru asks the Admiral what has happened to the Federation in the last 1000 years. He answers that only 38 planets belong to the Federation, as opposed to the 350 at its peak time, mainly because they have difficulties finding each other. Upon being asked about the Burn, the Admiral tells them that he has no obligation to tell them anything, because he does not trust them yet. Also, per law they are criminals at this moment because time travelling is illegal. So, he cannot even tell Burnham and Saru if the Command, the AI that tried to kill them in season two, is still active or not. The Admiral concludes that he needs evidence to trust them, and until he has that he does not allow the Discovery to work anymore. However, the crew will be reassigned, which also means that they will be separated.

Proof

Then, the crew gets interviewed by their AI, but no one is making their job easy. They try to play with them. Especially Georgiou has made it a mission to not give any answers, and even manages to destroy the holograms. However, another man is in the room with her and immediately knows that she is the Terran Emperor.

When they entered the headquarters, they saw Kili in need of medical attention. The Admiral told them that they are already working on a cure, that they have been poisoned by a plant. But in order to save them, they need the antidote, which they do not have.

Burnham then offers Saru that the Discovery can locate it by jumping to a seed vault and retrieve the needed seed. Burnham and Saru discuss the idea, and while Burnham just wants to jump there right away, Saru wants to do it by the Federation’s protocol and asks the Admiral. After a little dispute, they do it Saru’s way and thanks to Burnham’s persuasion skills they get to jump to the seed vault with the whole crew, and Willa as per the Admiral’s orders. Saru has to stay with the Admiral during this mission.

The Mission

After jumping to the “Tikhov” — the ship containing the seed vault, Burnham, Culber and Nhan are beamed on board. Nhan is specifically chosen for this mission by Burnham, because the last family to guard the vault was Barzan, like Nhan. They start to look for the family of two scientists and their children, but only find a hologram of them singing a melody — the same melody Adira played in the last episode. Burnham goes to the seed vault, which can only be entered by beaming inside of it, while Nhan looks through the logs. Meanwhile, Culber finds the actual family in capsules that are supposed to keep people in them alive, but the family is dead. Only the father is missing. Nhan concludes that the father must still be alive and tried to save his family.

Burnham wants to get the seed for the Kili but is not able to due to restricted access. The father finds her and attacks her, saying that he seeds belong to him. However, his face is folding into itself, and he seems out of sync. Burnham and the others contact the Discovery, mainly Stamets, Tilly and Reno. They immediately know that the reason he is doing that, is CME — a stars burp as Reno calls it. During this the family died, but the father is still alive because the beamed into the vault in the exact moment of the CME. They showcase their teamwork in front of Willa, who watches from the Discovery, and even compliments them on their work.

The only way to get the father out of his current status is to beam him again. Tilly beams him into the vault, causing a power outage at the Tikhov and thus the family’s capsules collapse — however they have been dead already. Nhan and Burnham talk to the father and ask him to give them some seeds, as he could save another families life. Realizing that his family is gone, he agrees.

Decisions

Culber wants to get the father to the Discovery to treat his internal wounds, but he does not want to leave his family. The three crew members discuss if they should leave him or take him against his will. Culber and Burnham want to take him against his will, or at least the Tikhov, because of the historic significance of the seeds. Nhan, being a Barzan herself and understanding the culture’s grief process, tells them to leave him with his family. Culber returns to the Discovery to work on the antidote for the Kili, while Burnham still talks to Nhan. Nhan would not let Michael persuade her, and makes the decision to stay on the Tikhov and guard the seed vault, giving up everything. She wants to be closer to her home again, and Burnham accepts this.

Back in the headquarters Saru and Burnham discuss their success with the Admiral, and he lets them operate again. He gives them the condition that they will only work under his commands.

Michael asked Lieutenant Willa if she found anything about the melody the family sang, but Willa only answers that everyone knows the melody. Burnham finds it odd that the family knew about the melody, if they did not have any contact with anyone else, but Willa cannot give her any answer.

Burnham then finds Georgiou on the ship and proceeds to ask her about the melody, but Georgiou seems to be fazed out, not even realising that Michael is standing there. Michael asks her if she is okay, and being as petty as ever, Georgiou only answers that she should not ask such a question.

Overall Thoughts

Episode five seems to be a little more dull than the episodes before, so I hope that it will get more exciting in the future again. I am very curious about the melody and wonder if it has anything to do with the Burn, knowing that everyone who was affected by it knows the melody.

Article contributed by Jasmina Demirovska

In episode 3, the crew of the Discovery got to visit their home planet Earth, and got a new member called Adira, who has joint with a Trill symbiont that can access memories of its previous hosts. One of these hosts was Admiral Tal, who sent the message to the Discovery.

This episode begins with Culber, who describes the trip to earth as eye-opening but also as a reality check. He checks all members of the ship for their health, and offers some crew members to talk as they seem to be sad. He also checks Adira, which seems to be completely fine, but she cannot access the memories of Admiral Tal. He suggests bringing her back to the symbiont’s planet Trill in order to get back her memories, but the crew does not know if the Trill are still peaceful all these years later. Saru establishes contact with a commissioner from Trill, and he seems to be more than delighted to help Adira and thus the symbiont, as the Trill’s population has decimated due to the Burn and every symbiont is needed.

Stress Levels

The scene cuts to Stamets, Tilly and Saru, when Saru asks Stamets about his well being after the last jump. He explains that Stamets and his abilities are too valuable for the Discovery and he wants Tilly and Stamets to have a back-up plan, should something happen to Stamets. Saru leaves, and Tilly suggests an idea to Stamets, namely to build a new interface with dark matter energy. Stamets quickly dismisses the idea, clearly being annoyed about her suggestion.

Meanwhile, Dr. Culber interrupts Burnham in her research about the Burn, to ask her to accompany Adira to the Trill. He explains that Michael and Adira both have lost a lot in the past year, and that Michael can empathise with Adira and offer her emotional support while on Trill. Michael agrees and accompanies her.

Dr. Culber then goes on to Saru after all his tests on the crew members. He tells him that everyone is physically healthy, but their stress levels are way too high, due to the circumstances. He thinks that the crew does not feel connected to the new world, or rather the new time. Saru then searches for ideas to reduce their stress levels.

Adira and The Symbiont

The scene cuts to Michael and Adira on Trill. They meet the leader and a few guardians in a beautiful garden of theirs and explain that Adira has joint with a symbiont. They realise that Adira is a human, which is an abomination to them because she is connected with a symbiont. Usually, a symbiont only connects with Trill. They dispute whether or not they should help Adira, or if they should forcefully disconnect the Symbiont from her. One guardian wants to help her, so they can build up their population again, another guardian is disgusted by their joint and wants to immediately disconnect them, which would lead to Adira’s death. The leader, however, decides on a middle ground and lets Adira live, but wants her and Burnham to leave Trill. Their leaving would mean that the Discovery cannot access Admiral Tal’s memories, and all their efforts were in vain.

The guard that wanted to disconnect Adira and the symbiont gets the task to escort them to their shuttle, but instead he corners them and attempts to go through with his own plan. It turns out that Burnham does not act according to the Federation’s ethics anymore, because she stunts all of them with her gun, instead of talking to them first. The other guard, in favour of the joint, sees them and wants to lead them to the Trill’s sacred cave called Mak’ala in order to access the symbiont’s memories and help them. Adira enters the cave’s pool, while Burnham and the guard watch over her.

The Crew’s Solidarity

During this, Saru searches for ways to reduce the crew’s stress levels through the ship’s computer. Upon asking for tips, the computer glitches and suggests a private meal with the bridge crew and a free night for the rest. At this point, some viewers might remember that the computer and the ship got hacked by an AI system in season two, but we do not know what caused this glitch now.

The meal with the bridge crew begins with a few encouraging words from Saru, and they seem to genuinely have fun with Haiku’s. They urge pilot Detmer to also say one, but she loses it because she is mad at Stamets for taking all the credit for flying the ship by jumping with the spores, even though she is also flying the ship as the official pilot. Tilly stops their arguing by pointing out that they can only get through this hard time as one crew. The mood is ruined, and they start leaving the room one by one. Saru’s mission to reduce their stress has failed with this attempt.

Adira’s Memories

Burnham, Adira and the guard get caught by the Trill’s leader, while Adira’s levels are dropping. Because of this distress, Burnham is allowed to enter the pool and help Adira. However, Adira is gone. Burnham has to find her and guide her back out. Michael finds herself in the symbiont and finds Adira. It appears that the symbiont wants to connect with Adira. Only after Burnham talks to her and gives her emotional support, she lets the symbiont get closer to her.

We see Adira’s memories now. She is seeing her boyfriend “Gray”, a trill who was supposed to join with the symbiont while Adira watched over him. He did successfully join with it. After the joint, Adira is giving Gray a present, a box with a blanket that she made herself. Just seconds after receiving the present, an asteroid hit their ship and Gray did not make it. In order to save the symbiont, Adira lets it join with her, even though she is human.

Back to Burnham and Adira in the symbiont, the past six lives of the symbiont’s host show themselves to them. One of them is Gray, and one is Admiral Tal. Adira can now access all of their memories, even though they are slowly coming to her. They get out of the pool, and the leader and other guardians apologise for their previous behaviour. They offer to lead Adira, but she wants to stay with the Discovery.

Peace

On the ship, Tilly tells Saru that everyone made the decision to come to this time, as to say that it is not his fault alone. Stamets also apologises to Tilly for not appreciating her enough, and even offers to talk about the new interface. Detmer also apologises to Dr. Culber, and wants to accept his offer of talking to him, as she thinks that something is wrong with her.

The scene cuts to the whole crew sitting and watching a movie, filling the room with laughter. Saru theorises that the sphere data they protected in the past, now wants to protect them and set up this movie. Which would also explain why the computer glitched before — it was the sphere data, attempting to find a solution for Saru.

Meanwhile, Adira shows Burnham the algorithm from Admiral Tal. He knew how to find the Federation’s headquarter. When Burnham exits the room, Adira is not alone. Gray is sitting beside her, but neither of them knows how that is possible.

Overall Thoughts?

I really liked this episode. We do have the usual action and excitement we know from Star Trek Discovery, but this episode seemed a little more refreshing and positive with lesser fight scenes than normal. It focused more on mental well-being, which I think we need to see more in movies and series in general. Also, it did not really end on a cliffhanger this time, but rather with more hope for the future, and once again, new characters.
