Intrigued? Well read on to discover the synopsis and an excerpt from Sophie Jordan’s A Scar In The Bone, which releases on October 14th 2025.

It’s been a year since Tamsyn transformed. From royal whipping girl in the palace of Penterra to the bride of Fell, the Beast of the Borderlands. From the enemy in the Beast’s bed to the wife he sacrificed himself to save. From an ordinary girl…to a dragon. And not just any dragon—a powerful fire-breather…and the best hope to keep magic from flickering out forever.

With Fell gone, torn from her side in the dangerous swirling mists of the Crags, Tamsyn is heartbroken and alone among the dragon pride. An unwelcome outsider still learning to survive in this fiery skin of hers within a new cutthroat society, she trains in the arena until her muscles burn and her blood spills. Slowly, Tamsyn forges herself into a warrior in the shadow of Fell’s enigmatic brother, Vetr, whose silver eyes track her with distrust…and maybe something more.

But is Fell truly beyond her reach? Their bond pulls at her, as fiercely as the drive to protect both humans and dragonkind from the growing threat posed by Stig, once her closest friend, now a relentless enemy determined to hunt her down and destroy her—and with her, all things magic.

Magic stirs in the darkness, strengthening all who believe in it. But will it be enough to save Tamsyn, the pride, the kingdom…and a fiery love fated to endure for centuries, as deep as a scar in the bone?

New York Times bestselling author Sophie Jordan returns to the high-stakes, sweeping world of dragons, romance, and drama first evoked in her bestselling young adult Firelight series, in a brand-new epic adult romantasy series.

Intrigued? Well read on to discover the synopsis and an excerpt from Sophie Jordan’s A Fire in the Sky, which is out September 24th 2024.

Dragons are extinct. Witches are outcast. Magic is dying.

But human lust for power is immortal.

Dragon fire no longer blisters the skies over Penterra, but inside the lavish palace, life is still perilous…especially for Tamsyn. Raised in the glittering court alongside the princesses, it’s her duty to be punished for their misdeeds. Treated as part of the royal family but also as the lowliest servant, Tamsyn fits nowhere. Her only friend is Stig, Captain of the Guard…though sometimes she thinks he wants more than friendship.

When Fell, the Beast of the Borderlands, descends on her home, Tamsyn’s world becomes even more dangerous. To save the pampered princesses from a fate worse than death, she is commanded to don a veil and marry the brutal warrior. She agrees to the deception even though it means leaving Stig, and the only life she’s ever known, behind.

The wedding night begins with unexpected passion—and ends in near violence when her trickery is exposed. Rather than start a war, Fell accepts Tamsyn as his bride…but can he accept the dark secrets she harbors—secrets buried so deep even she doesn’t know they exist? For Tamsyn is more than a royal whipping girl, more than the false wife of a man who now sees her as his enemy. And when those secrets emerge, they will ignite a flame bright enough to burn the entire kingdom to the bone.

Magic is not dead…it is only sleeping. And it will take one ordinary girl with an extraordinary destiny to awaken it.

Intrigued? Well read on to discover the synopsis and an excerpt from Sophie Jordan’s The Duchess, which is out now!

“I liked my husband well enough … but I like him even better dead.”

It’s been a year since her wretched cad of a husband died and Valencia, the Dowager Duchess of Dedham, is finally her own woman. Flitting from party to party, freedom is sweet and life should be perfect. Until the new duke surfaces.

Nothing like the haughty noblemen who populate the ton, Rhain, the newly minted Duke of Dedham, is a big brawny Welshman with an accent that makes Valencia’s knees go weak as he boldly moves into her home with his six wild unwed sisters. The rude and humorless usurper thinks her vain and spoiled. But with a pittance to her name, Valencia needs his support to remain in London and enjoy all the pleasures her new position as a merry widow has to offer.

So a bargain is struck. Valencia will usher his sisters into Good Society and see them happily betrothed. In return, he’ll give her the financial security and independence she craves. But the more time they spend beneath the same roof, the more she realizes it’s not safety she wants but the dangerously seductive Rhain. Valencia has vowed never to risk marriage again. And yet how can she resist the tempting man when he might be the greatest adventure of her life?

The Duchess of Dedham’s husband was dead.

The wretch had expired nearly a year ago, found with a broken neck at the bottom of the stairs. No one was surprised given how poorly his health and how dependent he was upon whiskey and laudanum to get through each day. No secret, that. Perhaps the only surprise was that he had survived as long as he had before plummeting to his death in the midst of a country house party.

Now, as the Dowager Duchess of Dedham, Valencia was free and ready for revelry. Truth be told, she had been ready upon the discovery that she was a widow, but there were rules. So many rules. Rules that she had followed all her life. Not that they had ever served her well. Rules, she found, rarely served women well. And yet those rules had changed now that she was no longer Dedham’s wife. At long last.

She was done with mourning. Done with her widow’s weeds. Done with hiding away in her Mayfair house.

She had made it a year. Eleven months to be precise, but that was time enough not to raise eyebrows. Time enough devoted to starched bombazine and the denial of all Society, to eschewing drawing rooms and teas and soirees and balls and nobles with their false smiles. At first, she was fine with that. Preferred it, even. After her husband expired in so dramatic a fashion, she needed her solitude. She had cloaked herself in isolation, taking comfort in her own company, growing stronger with each and every day, until she felt ready to emerge and rejoin the Living.

She was now ready.

Today was her birthday, and her husband was gone from her life forever. That was perhaps the greatest present of all. Terrible as the thought was, it was the truth of how she felt. The Dedham she had once loved died years ago when he was thrown from a horse. Another man took his place. Not her true husband. A ghost. A stranger. That stranger had died nearly a year ago, and she could feel no remorse for the loss.

She no longer had to suffer Dedham’s glowering, controlling presence anymore. No more hugging the shadows. No more making herself as small as possible. She was celebrating life—the rest of her life—and she had long years of marital misery to make up for.

More than a dozen revelers, all her closest friends (and foes), occupied the less-than-steady vessel as it departed the docks and glided slowly down the dark waters of the Thames to the South Bank as dusk descended. Destination: Vauxhall. Objective: a carousing good time. And who knew? Perhaps she would find a handsome gentleman to take her down one of the infamous dark walks. She would like that very much indeed. It had been far too long since she had been touched. Since a handsome gentleman had made her heart race. Since she had been held. Kissed.

Oh, she liked kissing. She had been good at it. There were many things at the start of her time with Dedham that seemed a hazy dream now, but that bit was true. Her pleasure in kissing had been real.

The yacht’s weight limit had perhaps been exceeded, but that did not concern the guests. They laughed. They drank. They applauded the opera singer who performed for them on a small dais. They hooted at neighboring boats—calling to people they knew across the water . . . and people they would like to know.

Ladies in gowns of every color lounged among the cushions, laughing and sipping champagne distributed by liveried servants managing the deck with acrobatic dexterity. Torches blazed along the perimeter of the conveyance, popping and crackling and doing wondrous things for the glittering silks, satins, and brocades. Not to mention the jewels. Extraordinary gems winked from deep decolletages and coiffed hair.

The marchioness’s improbable red wig flashed like flame on the night air as she laughed gaily. Valencia narrowed her gaze at her stepmother. Witch. If the woman was not married to Valencia’s papa, she would not have been invited, to be sure. Societal expectations and all that rubbish. Valencia rolled her eyes and sighed before sipping her champagne.

“Do not let the sight of her ruin your night,” Tru advised, very correctly guessing the reason for Valencia’s sigh.

“I cannot believe I must tolerate her. Especially tonight.” It was a celebration, after all, in her honor, and yet she must endure her father’s ridiculous wife.

She eyed Papa in distaste. His gnarled, paper-thin-skinned hands clutched the gold-knobbed and gem-studded cane as the conveyance rocked its way toward the entrance of Vauxhall. His equilibrium was poor, and yet somehow, with great assistance, he had managed to climb up the ramp of the yacht. She had not thought he would brave a party to Vauxhall, and yet here he was.

A nearby barge of gentlemen noticed their yacht. It was hard to miss. They waved and hooted across the waters at them. One young man stepped dangerously close to the edge and pressed both hands over his heart as he called to them, “Beautiful ladies, please accept my escort throughout the Gardens!”

Valencia gripped the railing and waved gaily back with a laugh. She glanced again to Tru. “Look at all those randy young bucks.” And then in a lowered voice, “Could Hazel not have chosen one of them? Why did she have to pick my father?”

Maeve, ever rational, shrugged from beside Tru. “Why not your father? He is wealthy and titled and dotes upon her.”

Valencia shook her head. “All these years later, and I still cannot believe Papa married her.” His mistress. He had married his mistress. It shamed her mother’s memory. “Of course you can,” Maeve returned. “Like so many men, your father is a vain man, and it feeds his ego to have a young and beautiful wife. He’s not extraordinary in that respect.” “Could he not have chosen someone who was not a paramour to half the gentlemen in our set?” she grumbled.

“Oh, you exaggerate,” Tru chided.

“Exaggerate she does not,” Lady Ashbourne inserted, stepping close and sliding into their conversation, nodding in the direction of the marchioness and lifting her glass in mocking salute. “I just know my dear Ashbourne dipped his quill in that inkpot.” The lady deliberately lifted her voice, making certain to attract Hazel’s notice with these inflammatory words.

Hazel frowned and inched closer toward them. “Are you speaking of me, Lady Ashbourne?” The lady looked Hazel up and down with a flare of her nostrils, clearly ready for battle. “In truth, I was speaking of your . . . inkpot.”

Hot color splashed Hazel’s cheeks, and Valencia almost—but not quite—felt sorry for her. Valencia could not deny it. She enjoyed watching her stepmother’s discomfort. Until Hazel reacted.

The marchioness lifted her hands and shoved Lady Ashbourne hard, pushing her squarely in the chest. The action sent the lady colliding into Valencia, the force of which propelled her directly over the railing of the yacht.

Valencia plunged into the dark waters of the Thames with a scream. Brackish water rushed into her lungs. The weight of her beautiful gown pulled her down, down, down.

She fought, clawing water, kicking at the tangle of skirts, fighting to rise to the surface. It was impossible. She writhed and twisted. Suddenly she was no longer certain which way was up or down. The fight seeped out of her. Her lungs burned like fire, and her limbs turned to lead, powerless to move . . . to save her.

She was drowning, dying . . . dead.

On her birthday, no less.

Bloody hell.

Sixteen Scandals by Sophie Jordan was a short and simple read. Not too much happened and the actual pacing of the story made the read a slow one as perhaps the simplicity of the story made it suffer. Characters weren’t really fleshed out, allowing the plot to only show the surface of their personalities which made them not very unique or likable, but rather generic and stereotypical. This story had a cinderella-esque vibe which I did like, especially when it came to her own mother who really seemed to nail the evil stepmother role from the original tale. The addition of the Lady Druther’s Guide to Perfect Deportment and Etiquette passages at the chapter breaks were also enjoyable because it provided a clever way to incorporate how the ‘ton’ functioned within the society. There were aspects of the story that I thoroughly enjoyed, but the overall readability didn’t work out as well as reader would hope. It read too slowly and the plot was overall too predictable to keep my attention in check.

This book would be perfect for fans of the Bridgerton novels by Julia Quinn as they also heavily feature society’s formal rules of the ‘ton’. I also respect and enjoy Jordan’s writing as a whole and although Sixteen Scandals wasn’t a hit for me, I loved her Reign of Shadows duology that features a Rapunzel without sight. This series is amazing and perfect for people who love unique fairytale retellings!

Our main character Primrose started off really likeable. She was stubborn when it came to her mother and her rules, she was an avid reader, and she was hilarious as hell to read! But I didn’t like how much she would lose her confidence and sneak back into her shy shell because it really set her character back and it made it harder for me to respect her and the growth that her character would achieve by the end of the story. There’s being shy and then there’s being too cautious and self-conscious. And I think that way of thinking stunted her growth too much.

“Her temper prickled at his clear insinuation. Prim let go of his arm, disliking his tone. He was no longer the only one annoyed now. He did not think her concerned with propriety? Well, on this night, she was not. True enough. But while she may have temporarily cast aside the trappings of decorum, she did not appreciate his judgment of her. He did not know anything about her. Excluding the facts that it was her birthday and she was acquainted with Mrs. Zaher, and that her hair was a rather unfortunate shade of red.”

I liked her temper here, especially when it came to her first initial meetings with the “man-boy” Jacob. This gave her some cred because she shared her opinions and I like how she was bothered by the assumptions that he was making. It created the perfect amount of tension to start the romance off. You could sense the chemistry and the attraction that was going to come from this and I was excited for more!

“My hair is too…brazen.’ Mama had told her that plenty of times.
‘Your hair is beautiful.’ The rejoinder came quickly. Forcefully.”

The only part that I hated which she constantly brought up as an insecurity was the colour and vibrancy of her red hair. This is even after both her friend and love interest recognise it as a beautiful thing that she shouldn’t be ashamed of. It was interesting for the author to include this trait as a negative in the main character’s eyes because they don’t usually have this insecurity, it’s usually a distinctive feature that makes them extraordinary or a stand out to all the other characters.

“See there.’ Olympia nodded to the stage as they wove through the room, locating a vacant table. ‘You bemoan your hair while there are those desperate to replicate it.”

I get why she did it because Prim didn’t want all this attention and the red hair created a sort of beacon for it, which her mother obviously hated, but she should have embraced it from the beginning and that would have shown her character to be stronger. Building up her confidence just a bit more at the start would have helped her character shine and this could have been done through her bright hair.

“Why wear it, of course. I’ll look quite the lady, don’t you think?’
Simon jerked a thumb in Prim’s direction. ‘This one’s got more meat on ‘er than ye. It won’t even fit. The thing will hang off ye.’
Nell slapped his arm. ‘Watch yer tongue. I’ll not ‘ave ye insulting another female for the shape the good Lord saw fit to bless ‘er with.’
Simon sputtered, gesturing at Primrose. ‘I merely pointed out that ye and she do not–’
‘Enough.’ Nell waved a finger to silence him. ‘Next thing you’ll be insulting me.”

One thing I did really appreciate was the inclusion of this scene because although it was an altercation between a female thief and Prim, the message she gives to the main character and her male companion was beautiful! It was a body positive comment in an era that didn’t recognise it as so and it was great the direction and concept that Jordan wanted to give to readers. It didn’t matter that it didn’t fit with the society the story takes place in because this is an important message to all women and the body shaming that happened during this time was not okay. This woman calls it out straightaway and that made me like the story more.

The way Jordan depicted her female characters was great! She gave them scenes where they didn’t care if they had a healthy appetite and would eat their fill. No one should be ashamed for their diet and I know a woman’s diet is highly judged, especially when this takes place and despite it being that way she gave Aster and Primrose the confidence and defiance to strike back from that status quo. Having a healthy love of food with none of the shame made this reader happy!

“She suffered a quick stab of guilt at the memory of all the times she had joined Aster in poking fun at Violet when she returned from Bond Street with some ridiculous confection that she insisted was the height of fashion. Prim shoved the memory aside. Violet was a sister. Insults were their love language.”

‘Insults were their love language’ struck a chord with me. Being a middle child of four, I got this right away and it is 100% accurate. The bonds she has with her sisters were real and genuine, you will not get along with your siblings all the time and there are definitely personality clashes and this book represents them perfectly with Primrose and her sisters. It was a masterclass in sibling relationships.

“Matches were made for practicality, not because of things like flutters. Mama had lectured on that point too many times to count. Along with the warning not to expect emotion or sentimentality from a future husband. According to her mother, it was not in a man’s disposition, as they were far too concerned with masculine pursuits. And why was she thinking of matches anyway? She was not in one of the gothic romances she purchased from the local bookshop and then hid from Mama. Mama blamed such books for filling Prim’s head with rubbish. And it was not as though Jacob was a viable marital prospect.”

Once again I loved how much Prim loved to read. It made me relate to her easily. The use of the word ‘flutters’ stood out to me as ingenious, It’s a new take on butterflies that’s very similar and yet unused to convey the same emotions one has when attracted to another, it was brilliant! It was a refreshing take on an exhaustive cliché and I loved its use here! It’s just so clever and simple and yet reads so much better than it’s cliched other half.
