Charlotte Holmes is accustomed to solving crimes, not being accused of them, but she finds herself in a dreadfully precarious position as the bestselling Lady Sherlock series continues.

Intrigued? Well read on to discover the synopsis and an excerpt from Sherry Thomas’s A Ruse of Shadows, which is out June 25th 2024!

Charlotte’s success on the RMS Provence has afforded her a certain measure of time and assurance. Taking advantage of that, she has been busy, plotting to prise the man her sister loves from Moriarty’s iron grip.

Disruption, however, comes from an unexpected quarter. Lord Bancroft Ashburton, disgraced and imprisoned as a result of Charlotte’s prior investigations, nevertheless manages to press Charlotte into service: Underwood, his most loyal henchman, is missing and Lord Bancroft wants Charlotte to find Underwood, dead or alive.

But then Lord Bancroft himself turns up dead and Charlotte, more than anyone else, meets the trifecta criteria of motive, means, and opportunity. Never mind rescuing anyone else, with the law breathing down her neck, can Charlotte save herself from prosecution for murder?

Miss Olivia Holmes was unexpectedly enchanted by Aix-en-Provence.

For all that she had always wished to visit the South of France, she had largely aspired to the Côte d’Azur, sunny and mild even in the deepest winter, its towns and seaside villages fashionable retreats for those who could afford to get away from England in cold, damp January.

Charlotte, however, had not asked Livia to meet with her in Cannes, Antibes, Saint-Tropez—or even the little principality of Monaco—but in Aix-en-Provence.

We have visited Aix a time or two, and it charms Mrs. Watson greatly—perhaps it will have the same captivating effect on you.

Once Aix had been the seat of the Counts of Provence, a nexus of both power and culture. Now it was but a quiet provincial town. Why had Charlotte and Mrs. Watson journeyed more than once from Paris to visit the place, and then proposed it for their reunion?

A few months ago on the RMS Provence, Mrs. Watson had told Livia, We have news of Mr. Marbleton’s whereabouts. And we plan to take advantage of that.

Livia, when she’d recovered from her astonishment, had promptly offered her assistance, such as it was. But Mrs. Watson had smiled and said, You go on with your travels, my dear. Enjoy yourself. Enjoy your hard-won freedom. Write more tales of Sherlock Holmes, if you wish. We will ask for your help when the time comes.

The time was nigh, Livia was sure. Mrs. Watson had not disclosed Mr. Marbleton’s location but dared Livia presume that he was being held right here?

Charlotte’s letter, inviting Livia to come to Aix, had reached Livia in Athens, as she and Mrs. Newell returned from Constantinople. Livia’s heart had not stopped hammering since, with both dread and wild hope. Aix-en-Provence had loomed large in her mind, a vaguely sinister locale full of locked doors and closed shutters, its public squares deserted, its very air heavy and oppressive.

When she arrived, however, she’d found the town lovely, full of edifices the colors of sunshine and warm butter. The sidewalk cafés, cool in the dappled green shade of tall elm trees, brimmed with patrons reading books and newspapers, and children looking about curiously as they drank their syrupy soda water. Fountains burbled everywhere, from splashy congregations of mythological creatures to some that were little more than a spigot on a wall spouting into a plain stone basin, yet somehow that little stream of water sparkled in the sun and made music as it fell.

She prayed that Mr. Marbleton, so talented at taking pleasure in small things, managed to enjoy the unspooling of daily life here: the vibrant produce on market days, the scent of thyme, aniseed, and good bread in the air, the soft thuds of coffee cups on marble-top café tables giving way to the clinking of wineglasses and silverware as day drifted into evening.

Was there—was there any chance at all that he had already spied her, walking about? Had he perhaps seen Charlotte and Mrs. Watson, too, on their earlier jaunts? Had he begun his own preparations, sensing that his escape was near—that maybe now, with her appearance, it was imminent?

He loved life; she never loved life so much as when she saw it through his eyes. But by that same token, as long as he remained a prisoner, her own freedom would be incomplete.

“Mademoiselle Holmes?” called out the clerk at the reception desk as she came through the hotel’s front door with enough patisserie for three Charlottes. “Mademoiselle, we have a letter for you.”

Charlotte!

Livia took the letter from the clerk, thanked him, and made sure that she walked normally out of the foyer, and up the curving staircase to her bright, high-ceilinged room on the next floor. There she carefully set down the packages in her hands and sliced open the envelope.

Dear Livia,

I hope this letter finds you well and that you have been pleasantly situated in Aix-en-Provence.

I’m afraid I write with unhappy news.

Don’t worry, no one is in danger—at least not at the moment.

I have not told you this earlier, but in the past several weeks, I have received two notes from Lord Bancroft, each expressing a desire for greater understanding and friendship. It was obvious Lord Bancroft harbored ulterior motives, but it was not obvious what exactly he wanted.

The second of these notes arrived just as Mrs. Watson, Miss Redmayne, and I began our recent journey to England to call on Lord Ingram, who fractured his limb in an accident at Stern Hollow.

Livia sucked in a breath. Lord Ingram was the last person to break a bone while proceeding under his own power.

Instead of starting immediately for Paris after the visit—Lord Ingram appeared in decent form and I could discern no signs of foul play—we headed to London, so that I might call on Lord Bancroft and uncover his purpose in writing to me.

I did just that yesterday, but was not granted an audience. Upon reaching the hotel, however, I learned that henchmen under orders from Lord Bancroft had overrun Mrs. Watson’s house in Paris and taken its residents hostage.

Livia cried out loud. “What?”

Our return journey began within hours. We reached Paris this morning and found the house indeed occupied by four armed individuals, three men and one woman.

They have an air of mercenaries about them—the sort to do evil mechanically, rather than with personal relish. But they let Mrs. Watson, Miss Redmayne, and myself into the house without raising a fuss: My lord Bancroft, it would seem, understands that I will do nothing for him unless first assured of the well-being of everyone in the household.

The mercenaries have not mistreated anyone, but hand down strict orders that they expect to be meekly and swiftly obeyed. Mr. Mears, the only man in the household, has been locked in his own room. Madame Gascoigne has to cook for everyone, Polly and Rosie Banning waiting on the mercenaries hand and foot.

Thankfully they let Mademoiselle Robineau remain with Bernadine in her room at all times.

When I saw her, Bernadine was not too badly off. Fortunately, at this point, Mademoiselle Robineau has been a part of the household for months. And she has an innate calm and a cheerful presence. So even though Bernadine must feel, to some extent, the fear and tension of the situation, within her own room, with the invaders out of sight, she seemed to be carrying on more or less normally except for a reduced appetite.

We were not allowed to remain long. After a quick visit with everyone and a few words spoken across Mr. Mears’s door, we were booted out. Miss Redmayne kindly put us up in her place, where I may compose letters and telegrams. She and Mrs. Watson are out now, purchasing enough ready-to-eat foods to supply a platoon. We will deliver all that, plus a large hamper of foodstuff from Lord Ingram, to the house this evening. It should make life easier for the staff. And, we hope, allow us another chance to see Bernadine.

By the time you receive this letter, on the morrow, I should be getting ready for the railway trip to Boulogne, there to cross the Channel back to England again.

To confront Lord Bancroft.

At this point the letter switched to a jumble of letters, which Livia recognized as the Cdaq Khuha code that she and Charlotte had devised to use with each other when they were children.

Deciphered, it read,

No doubt you feel anxious and likely wish that you could either journey to Paris to keep an eye on the situation or join me in England. But I must ask you to remain in Aix. Since I cannot be there, you must be my eyes and ears. I am counting on you.

Love,

Charlotte

Charlotte Holmes comes face to face with her enemy when Moriarty turns to her in his hour of need, in the USA Today bestselling series set in Victorian England. Intrigued? Well read on to discover the synopsis and an excerpt for Sherry Thomas’s Miss Moriarty, I Presume?, which releases releases on November 2nd 2021.

A most unexpected client shows up at Charlotte Holmes’s doorstep: Moriarty himself. Moriarty fears that tragedy has befallen his daughter and wants Charlotte to find out the truth.

Charlotte and Mrs. Watson travel to a remote community of occult practitioners where Moriarty’s daughter was last seen, a place full of lies and liars. Meanwhile, Charlotte’s sister Livia tries to make sense of a mysterious message from her beau Mr. Marbleton. And Charlotte’s longtime friend and ally Lord Ingram at last turns his seductive prowess on Charlotte—or is it the other way around?

But the more secrets Charlotte unravels about Miss Moriarty’s disappearance, the more she wonders why Moriarty has entrusted this delicate matter to her of all people. Is it merely to test Charlotte’s skills as an investigator, or has the man of shadows trapped her in a nest of vipers?

“Ma’am, miss, Lord Ingram called while you were out,” said Mr. Mears, the butler, as he welcomed Mrs. Watson and Charlotte back into the house.

It was tea time the next day and the ladies had returned from another successful small case. For the services rendered, Mrs. Watson had collected two pounds and twelve and a half shillings. The amount was no pittance: During Charlotte’s time as a runaway, that much money would have lasted her a month, if she didn’t eat very much. But she estimated that Mrs. Watson could have demanded another half crown and the grateful client would still have considered their fees eminently reasonable.

Mrs. Watson had been badly distracted.

“Lord Ingram is in town? Thank goodness!” Mrs. Watson closed her eyes and exhaled.

His lordship’s arrival came as no surprise to Charlotte. If he hadn’t rushed to London after receiving her letter, she would have been astonished—and perplexed. But now that he was here, she exhaled, too, a great tension leaving the muscles of her neck and shoulders, making her realize that all day she’d held herself stiffly.

“When he heard that you were out, his lordship asked for the key to number 18,” said Mr. Mears.

18 Upper Baker Street served as Charlotte’s office. It was where she met those who came seeking her “brother” Sherlock Holmes’s help, and informed them that the consulting detective was unwell and needed his sister to serve as both his eyes and ears and the oracle via whom he dispensed his great insight.

Mrs. Watson settled her black velvet toque back on her head. “Thank you, Mr. Mears. Let’s go see him, Miss Charlotte.”

Mr. Mears, always prepared, held out a covered rattan basket. “For your tea, ladies.”

Charlotte inclined her head. She had not eaten much this day and looked forward to an extravagant tea. She hooked the basket over one arm, Mrs. Watson took her other arm, and they exited the house.

According to the calendar, March was less than a week away. But there was no hint of spring in the wind that cut Charlotte’s cheeks, the cold that seeped in beneath her clothes, or the sky above that remained a resolute grey.

“Did you write Lord Ingram, my dear?” asked Mrs. Watson in a low voice. “I wanted to ask you to write him—oh, how I wanted to. But I couldn’t bring myself to do it.”

“Because he has children to think of?” murmured Charlotte. “True, but he would have been extremely upset if we’d kept him out of the matter.”

She sounded unhesitating, but she had wavered for twenty minutes, a long time for an otherwise decisive woman. She was not inclined to withhold the truth from those to whom it mattered. But if she could predict how someone would react upon receiving a particular piece of information, then in relaying that information was she letting a grown man make his own choice, or had she already taken away every choice except one?

He did have his children to think of. With their mother in exile, his safety was of paramount importance to their well-being. And De Lacey’s impending visit was no ordinary peril.

In the end, she had arrived at her decision as she had arrived at the decision to meet Moriarty’s representative: by relying on both the coldest logic and a rather shocking amount of intuition. It was the same problem, and needed precisely the same calculation of how much danger they faced at this specific moment in time.

And now, the fate of those who mattered the most to her rested on the accuracy of her assessment.

“It will be all right,” she said as they stopped before their destination.

“Yes,” replied Mrs. Watson a little too fast, almost as if she’d been holding her breath, waiting for this exact reassurance.

The stucco exterior of 18 Upper Baker Street had been mended and cleaned, the front door given a new coat of black lacquer. The renovation had been Mrs. Watson’s idea: If the ladies were seen outside directing masons and painters, then they must not be thinking of running away from Moriarty.

Charlotte had no way of knowing whether their act of feathering the nest convinced anyone of anything, but the door itself, freshly lacquered, certainly gleamed. The lunette window above the door was lit, as were the parlor on the next floor where Charlotte and Mrs. Watson received their clients and the adjacent room that served as Sherlock Holmes’s “convalescent” chamber.

Her heart beat a little faster. Ash. They hadn’t seen each other since Christmas. She wished she had worn something better. Her grey jacket-and-skirt set was perfectly serviceable, but hardly had the impact of the velvet day dress she’d had made recently, in a similarly overpowering pink as her tea gown.

The next moment she had her hand on Mrs. Watson’s sleeve. “Don’t look anymore, ma’am.”

She’d never prohibited Mrs. Watson from paying attention to either of the flats taken by Moriarty’s minions, but she did not want the dear lady to betray too much agitation. Their attitude toward this “unearned” surveillance should be one of bemusement and disapproval, not trembling fear.

Mrs. Watson barely took her eyes off the Upper Baker Street flat today, and just now she was again about to turn around and look.

“Right, right,” muttered her partner, her key scratching the lock a few times before she managed to open the front door.

“Is that you, Holmes?” came the question immediately—from the direction of the basement.

“Yes, and Mrs. Watson, too,” answered Charlotte.

Footsteps. Soon Lord Ingram, in his shirtsleeves and gold-flecked waistcoat, emerged from the door that led to the domestic offices belowstairs.

He looked . . . healthy. He looked like exactly who he was, a country squire who rode and walked daily, rain or shine. She could almost smell the fresh Derbyshire air still clinging to his skin and hair, this lithe, strapping young man striding toward her, the lupine grace of his gait made more lethal by the fact that he was still rolling down his sleeves over his shapely forearms.

Mrs. Watson threw herself at him. “Oh, thank goodness you’re here!”

He stilled in surprise before wrapping his arms around her, too, enfolding her in his embrace. “Of course I’m here. Where else would I be?”

He spoke to Mrs. Watson, but looked at Charlotte. The letter from de Lacey must have struck him hard; the concern in his eyes, however, was not for himself, but for her.

She inclined her head. She was not fearful by nature and the threat of Moriarty was not a new one. Moreover, short of fleeing, they had already made every preparation. Mrs. Watson still agonized over all the dire possibilities that they had not anticipated, but Charlotte’s mind was focused on the upcoming meeting.

De Lacey might be sent to interrogate her, but in speaking to him Charlotte would also gain valuable intelligence to guide her next step.

We had the pleasure of chatting to author Sherry Thomas about her new novel, The Magnolia Sword: A Ballad of Mulan, including its inspiration and the challenges she faced, along with book recommendations, what’s next for her, and more!

Hi Sherry! Tell us a little about yourself!

I am a writer of genre fiction. I’ve always said that my goal in life is to write every kind of fiction that I enjoy reading. So far, I’ve written romance, mystery, fantasy, wuxia (Chinese martial arts epics), and have dabbled a little in SF via a somewhat space-opera-y SF romance novella. I have written for both the adult and the young adult audience. And although I have set my stories in the future and the present, I seem most drawn to writing books set in the past.

I guess in the context of this book I should also mention that I was born and brought up in China and came to the US when I was thirteen.

When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

It happened in a single afternoon when I was 23, a young stay-at-home mom, and encountered a book that disagreed with me violently. I informed my husband that evening that I was going write some books. It was a wonder he didn’t think I’d lost my mind, as I’d never mentioned anything about writing fiction before—or indeed had any intention of doing so!

Your new novel, The Magnolia Sword: A Ballad of Mulan, is out now! If you could only use five words to describe it, what would they be?

Epic adventure, epic love story.

What inspired you to write this novel?

I was asked by Cheryl Klein, editorial director at Lee & Low Books, if I would be interested in writing an adaptation of the original Ballad of Mulan. When I saw that the original ballad said nothing about Mulan’s time in the military or really anything about her, I realized that I could take this adaptation in any direction I wanted.

Immediately the idea leapt to mind of marrying the story of Mulan to some traditions of wuxia, a uniquely Chinese literary genre that explores the themes of honor, sacrifice, vengeance, and forgiveness through the deeds of almost mythically adept martial artists. So that’s the direction I went in because I love writing wuxia.

Did you have to conduct any research?

So much. It was only as I began writing that I realized how little I knew of 5th century China. I had to look up everything, what people ate, what they wore, what they read. The geopolitical situation came as a complete surprise to me too, as Northern Wei, the time and place where the Ballad of Mulan is usually considered to have taken place, was not ruled by Han Chinese, but ethnic minorities.

Were there any parts of The Magnolia Sword that challenged you when writing?

The research was a huge challenge, as I mentioned above, both in terms of cultural and political background, and in how and where was going to place Mulan and her companions, to make sure that their movements were feasible.

It was also a challenge to get to know the characters in the beginning. I’ve been writing a historical mystery series in recent years and have come to know the cast very well. This was the first time that I’d created completely new characters in a while and took me some time to get those muscles working again. Such a relief when the characters became real!

What is a typical writing day like for you?

A lot of distractions. I think I said in an interview years ago that my books are written 50 words at a time and that really hasn’t changed.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

Read the best books you can find and aim to surpass the books that you find scarily good.

Also, read one-star reviews of your very favorite books. It’s good to realize early that no story is for everyone.

What’s next for you?

THE ART OF THEFT, book 4 of my Lady Sherlock historical mystery series, featuring a Charlotte Holmes, a consulting detective in Victorian London with the nom de guerre of Sherlock Holmes, comes out October 15, 2019. And I’m working on book 5 in the series as we speak.

Lastly, do you have any book recommendations for us?

I’m really late to the game but I finally started Lois McMaster Bujold’s Vorkosigan series and am enjoying myself!
