With A War of Wyverns, S. F. Williamson delivers a knockout sequel that heightens my favourite aspects of the first book and expands the mythos, history and scope of this world. This is a must-read for YA fantasy fans.

This is the epitome of an excellent sequel. It expands the world in wonderful ways as we travel to a new location complete with its own secrets for the characters to unlock. This is a setting that is close to my heart so I was predisposed to love it but Williamson conveys it in such a beautiful and intricate way. You get the sense of isolation and how it is like its own world, that sense of timelessness caught in a stunning manner. It has a rich history and lore for Vivien and the ragtag bunch of characters assembled in A Language of Dragons (plus some great new additions) to immerse themselves. I loved the way Williamson lets us explore more of dragon culture and history in this world that mimics our own so closely. There are plenty of topical allusions and the core message of fighting for what is right in a world determined to crush you is one that resonates even stronger in today’s climate. The politics are heightened here as we get to explore life outside of Bletchley a little. Vivien is originally acting undercover until she is exposed and must travel to these remote Scottish Isles. Her subterfuge is an interesting way to explore the social hierarchy from a new lens than that of the bubble of Bletchley.

We also get to explore more of the wider world of this series with a look at the history and the complexity within that. It is a wonderfully detailed fleshing out of the mythos of the world and we get to explore hidden secrets that enrich previous events. Sequels thrive in fantasy when they can deliver this kind of inventive and expansive world-building. It nods to a plethora of unexplored stories in a way that adds depth and texture to the world, making it feel even more real. We learn more about dragon culture and how it has dovetailed with human history and branches off into regional culture, history and legends. I also really enjoyed how it ties in with setting, mirroring our world in plenty of brilliant ways but with a twist.

Williamson is delivering a pertinent message through this trilogy in such wonderful ways. This is a book deeply concerned with the construction and forced upholding of certain narratives. It is a deeply dangerous and murky place, especially for a series concerned with linguistics and the ethical dilemmas held within this sphere. Vivien has been on quite a journey and unfortunately this does not let up here. She is challenged and pushed to her limits once more, testing the strength of her character and beliefs in the face of adversity. Her character arc is phenomenal and I am very interested to see where Williamson may place her by the end. She has become an important figurehead for the movement, but Williamson is interested in unpicking what this means and what actions she must take in order to uphold this reputation. Again, it is the weaponising of language, both literally and in the use of propaganda to keep one narrative dominant. I loved the way Vivien’s intellect is used as a weapon against her at times and how it ensures that she is in a murky place morally, where she is deeply aware of the implications of her own actions.

A War of Wyverns continues to deliver YA fantasy excellence with a firestorm of a sequel that promises yet more twists, turns and turmoil in the next instalment of this excellent trilogy. If you are not already immersed in this world, you are missing a delight.

20 Anticipated Titles From YALC 2025

Late last month, the annual Young Adult Literature Convention (YALC) took place in the UK as part of London Comic Con. There were plenty of fantastic books being talked about, so read on to discover twenty of the most buzzed-about upcoming titles featured at YALC. These are featured in no particular order and there were so many more amazing books, so I would highly recommend seeing what fantastic titles are coming soon.

The Heirs by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé

Straight out the gate, the queues to enter the competition for a proof of this title were humungous and spoke to the quality of Faridah’s previous work and the killer concept. Five geniuses, one murder and one hell of a whodunnit is in store. This sounds like Knives Out meets The Inheritance Games and I am here for it. Faridah is one of my all-time favourite authors and if she’s not already on your radar, you need to correct that immediately.

Survival Show by Juno Dawson

Simon and Schuster organised an attention-grabbing stunt for the cover reveal at YALC with a flashmob performance in keeping with the theme of this book as a deadly reality TV competition to join the latest hot pop group. It sounds like everything you could ask for.

The Fox Hunt by Caitlin Breeze

This is an intoxicating-sounding debut, blending Dark Academia with magic and revenge. Emma Curran is drawn into the prestigious, all-male Turnbull Club after falling for its leader and things take a dark turn when a fox hunt game gets underway.

We chat with debut author S.F. Williamson about A Language of Dragons, which is set in an alternate London in 1923 where one girl accidentally breaks the tenuous truce between dragons and humans in this sweeping debut and epic retelling of Bletchley Park steeped in language, class, and forbidden romance.

Hi, S.F.! Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

Hello! I’m a translator turned fantasy author living in Northern France with my husband and baby. I’ve been writing for years but things really took off after I did a Master’s Degree in Writing for Young People in the lovely English town of Corsham and secured a literary agent. A Language of Dragons is my debut novel.

When did you first discover your love for writing and stories?

I’ve been writing since I was about six. I used to type up stories onto my dad’s pre-historic desktop computer and print them out. Then I discovered that “author” was a real job and that’s all I’ve wanted to be ever since.

**Your debut novel, A Language of Dragons, is out January 7^th! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?**

Political, rebellious, atmospheric, complex and a love letter to languages.

What can readers expect?

Plot twists, politics, thoughts on linguistics and privilege and lots of DRAGONS!

**Where did the inspiration for A Language of Dragons come from?**

I had a dream about dragons landing on the cliffs where my dad lives on the South East coast of England and a girl was running from them. This got mixed up with my work as a literary translator and interest in Bletchley Park and suddenly I had a very vivid character in Viv and the perfect dark academia setting.

Were there any moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?

I loved writing Viv. I know she’s not always likeable, but that’s the point. We are all, as humans, ridiculously complex creatures and doing the “right thing“ is rarely easy. On top of this, she’s a seventeen year old girl, which is a hard age to be. Being in her head was deliciously complicated and healing for me, because I didn’t have to worry about making her the perfect hero. I just wanted her to be real.

Can you tell us a bit about your process in creating an alternate London?

I had to think about how society might have evolved if humans and dragons lived side by side under an almost totalitarian government, which is how things like the Peace Agreement, the studying of Draconic linguistics and the Human-Dragon Coalition emerged. My world-building process is gradual in that I make up details as and when I need them for each scene, instead of building the whole thing before I start writing, so it felt quite easy and natural.

Did you face any challenges? How did you overcome them?

Writing the codebreaking scenes was very difficult as the language Viv is working on is echolocation-based, so I couldn’t really take inspiration from any of the languages I know. It’s hard to have a character deciphering a language you don’t even speak and I had to make sure everything was consistent and making sense to the reader.

What’s next for you?

I’m currently working on the sequel to A Language of Dragons, which publishes January 2026!

Katabasis by R.F. Kuang — I cannot wait as her writing never disappoints! Also Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins and Gifted and Talented by Olivia Blake.
