Intrigued? Well read on to discover the synopsis and an excerpt from Sarah Rees Brennan’s Long Live Evil, which is out July 30th 2024.

When her whole life collapsed, Rae still had books. Dying, she seizes a second chance at living: a magical bargain that lets her enter the world of her favorite fantasy series.

She wakes in a castle on the edge of a hellish chasm, in a kingdom on the brink of war. Home to dangerous monsters, scheming courtiers and her favourite fictional character: the Once and Forever Emperor. He’s impossibly alluring, as only fiction can be. And in this fantasy world, she discovers she’s not the heroine, but the villainess in the Emperor’s tale.

So be it. The wicked are better dressed, with better one-liners, even if they’re doomed to bad ends. She assembles the wildly disparate villains of the story under her evil leadership, plotting to change their fate. But as the body count rises and the Emperor’s fury increases, it seems Rae and her allies may not survive to see the final page.

And in this scene, our scheming villainess and her newly acquired evil minion, an assassin turned bodyguard from the gutter, have just stormed into the throne room intent on escaping execution… and meeting our villainess’s favourite character.

Courtiers turned towards them like flowers towards a wicked sun.

Rae took a deep breath.

“Nervous?” Key asked.

“Well. Yes. But I can’t wait to see the king.”

Key seemed vaguely surprised. “Isn’t he about to execute you?”

“I love him despite the death sentence. He’s the handsomest man in the world, he’s funny, he has an enormous menagerie—”

Key smirked.

“—He has an enormous collection of cool monsters,” Rae explained. “He makes epic speeches, he wins unwinnable battles, he’s loyal past death, and he’s lonely.”

“Aren’t we all,” Key murmured.

The throne room was treasure laid out before her. Court officials lined up against the walls, but in her excitement Rae perceived them as simply gold-braided blue-uniformed wallpaper. The riches of Eyam had only been words to her, but now they were more than words.

A divine tragedy had occurred in this land. The very earth here was strange, and strange jewels and metals could be mined from it. Metal from Eyam could be wrought into enchanted weapons. Though few visitors travelled here, merchants came offering fabulous prices for what was known as orichal steel and orichal silver. The pillars of the throne room, as outside, were ruddy orichal gold. The walls and domed ceiling were lined in green crystal, facets tinged crimson, shimmering as though they were all trapped in a broken mirror.

The floor was hammered red-gold mosaics, showing the lost goddess

disappearing into the sun.

The master of all these riches waited to meet her. Even the air between her and the throne shimmered. Rae prepared to be dazzled.

She quoted the Emperor in the future. “Love is the song that wakes us from the grave. Death cannot stop my heart.”

Key sounded impressed but doubtful. “Love survives execution?”

She recalled an internet manifesto on why villains were better lovers. “Love burns down the world for a kiss.”

“Did you say, burns down the world for kicks?”

“Hush, minion,” Rae murmured. She only had eyes for the Emperor now.

The king’s throne stood on vast golden talons holding rubies big as dinosaur eggs. A minister stood on either side. One must be the prime minister and the other the commander of the king’s armies, though Rae couldn’t tell which was which. The throne was backed by a representation of raven wings, jet and red-gold feathers fanning out. The bird’s rapacious beak was enamelled with human bone. Diamonds and rubies trailed after the wings to signify sparks cascading against a lapis- lazuli sky.

Against the gold and glitter, the black of the king’s clothes made him stand out like a void opening up in the sun.

Rae hit Key’s arm in high excitement. “It’s him! I love him!”

“So you keep saying.” Key started to laugh. “Don’t strike me, I stab when startled.”

Here he was. The most powerful and merciless man in the world. The future Emperor. Rae’s favourite character.

An antihero was just a villain with good PR. The Emperor might sympathize with Rae. She’d always sympathized with him.

Sarah Rees Brennan is back with an amazing new book, Fence: Striking Distance, inspired by the popular graphic novels, Fence! We were lucky enough to chat with her about this upcoming new release, including the Fence characters to what to expect of this contemporary novel about fencers, we covered it all in today’s interview! So keep on reading if you adore the Kings Row boys as much as we do!

Hi, Sarah! Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Why hello there! I’m an Irish writer who’s been writing works of—mainly—YA fantasy for several years now. I live near a cathedral and a river, and I grew up by the sea. I love to read and write things that induce tears, fear and laughter. All three are essential!

Fence: Striking Distance is a novel inspired by Fence, the graphic novels! What did the writing process for it look like? How much did you collaborate with C.S. Pacat regarding the storylines and characters?

C.S. Pacat was incredibly open and helpful in collaborating! When I lived in Australia for six months, C.S. Pacat and Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff were all basically petal darlings who wrote with me and showed me the ropes. (Some of the ropes were attached to pirate ships on the Yarra river.) So we were used to having involved conversations about our work. We would get on video chat and planned out the book together, cooking up plots and backstories in detail, then I sent her bits as I wrote them, then we had a mid-way chat and a revisions chat scheduled, and if there was a hiccup in the process we’d get on skype again. There’s a prank war in the book, and several very bad pranks suggested were actual suggestions I made while C.S. Pacat looked at me scornfully. (Not really. But I deserved to be looked at scornfully.)

This is one of your first dips into writing YA contemporaries! How does it differ from writing a fantasy book? Did you have to get into a particular headspace, faced any new challenges?

That was actually my biggest challenge! I do love me some magic, monsters and murder giving my story shape. I did ask C.S. Pacat if I could put in a murder for the fencing team to solve… maybe I’ll get to do a murder someday. (She says wistfully, getting strange looks.) But I have a long-time love for a swashbuckling swordfight, and I did fencing class in school, plus I love characters and the connections between them the most. Having very different people in the insular world of an elite boarding school, with this competitive sport binding them together and ratcheting up tension, is a way to turn an island of misfit toys into a found family. I think that’s why people love team stories, so to get into the headspace of a contemporary I’d think about the teams I’d loved, from the Mighty Ducks to Naruto, and how building a team is a great way to tell a love story.

If you had to describe this book in five words, what would they be?

Fake dating, band of misfits! And if the words ‘fake dating’ mean nothing to you, well, you’ll see…

Now tell us a little more! What can readers expect from this fun story about the fencers at Kings Row?

I was thinking about team building… and the boys’ coach is too! Fresh off their first major fencing victory, Coach sets the team—responsible captain Harvard, carefree playboy Aiden, well-meaning prankster Eugene, fencing prodigy Seiji and Nicholas from the wrong side of the tracks—a series of challenges in order to bond as a team. These challenges escalate beyond anyone’s expectations. Suddenly Harvard is dating, Aiden is losing his mind about it, and serious Seiji may have become a criminal mastermind. I hope the story works as a fun time for existing fans, and a fun place to jump in for those intrigued by fencing and friendship… and more than friendship…

Fence: Striking Distance is told from four points of view! Did this prove challenging to write? Which character’s perspective did you love writing most and why?

I love playing games with points of view, actually! It’s fun to show that everyone is living in a different world inside their minds, drawing conclusions from what they see and hear which may be completely at odds with another characters’ conclusions. I also wrote tie-in novels for Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and I found when you’re writing tie-ins for a visual media, where you’re used to seeing many scenes with many different characters, you definitely need the books to have several points of view to give the same effect of having scope. Plus books provide the opportunity to dive deeper into a psyche, showing you what people are thinking and their pasts as visual media can’t, and I thought readers would appreciate getting that perspective on more than one character.

I loved writing Seiji Katayama’s perspective the most. He’s a guy of few words and intense focus, and presents a cool façade that covers up loneliness and social awkwardness. It’s an interesting challenge to write someone so talented he never really thought he needed to be anything else, learning otherwise at last. He’s the most different internally as opposed to externally. He’d be formidable and unreadable in other points of view, and then I’d get to flip the script.

What was your favourite part of writing Fence: Striking Distance? Are there any characters or parts of the story that didn’t make it into the final version of this book?

There is a whole kiss scene that didn’t make it into the final version of the book. C.S. Pacat thought we should cut it, and was totally right. But I just wanted you all to know there’s a kiss scene you didn’t see. Who is it between? What happens? You can only imagine.

If Fence were to be adapted, what format would you prefer and why?

I’d love to see it as a TV show, either animated in Johanna’s style or live action! The way the fencing contests are set up lends itself to episodic telling, and the setting of Kings Row is so much fun visually. C.S. Pacat sent me a folder of pictures to consult for the school, and I’ve spent a lot of time in the Massachusetts and Connecticut area, and now I’m freaking out my friends there by being like ‘send your children to stately academies! Pics please.’ Old red brick buildings, deep woods and a deeper lake, and a school motto. I’d love to see that in motion!

What’s next for you? Can you tease any new projects (maybe even in the Fence universe)?

Maybe even so in the Fence universe! I’ve been told the end of Fence: Striking Distance was mean, so maybe I make it up to people in the next installment. Or maybe… I get even meaner…

Let’s finish this interview with some recommendations! Which new releases should we keep our eyes peeled for?

Naomi Novik’s A Deadly Education is coming out in September. She’s an amazing writer and it’s such a fun, scary, thoughtful take on a familiar setting.

The post Q&A: Sarah Rees Brennan, Author of ‘Fence: Striking Distance’ appeared first on The Nerd Daily.

Fence is a series of very popular graphic novels created by C.S. Pacat (author) and Johanna the Mad (illustrator)! Three volumes have been published so far and now we are getting a YA novel inspired by said comic, written by Sarah Rees Brennan!

Now if you’re a fan of Fence, you already know most of our main players, but in this book we learn more about their lives in Kings Row, including their families to relationships and aspirations! I’ve been following Fence graphic novels for a while now and when I got the chance to read and review this novel, I jumped at the chance (with a lot of enthusiasm and screaming, may I add).

Before I go into more depth about certain parts of the novel, here are my general thoughts: Fence: Striking Distance is a fun and quick read, filled with witty one-liners, angst, friendships, and relationship drama! It was pretty heavy on that last bit, but I can’t say I really minded that even if it was slightly unexpected.

Fence: Striking Distance reads like a cute LGBTQ+ contemporary and here’s my only complaint: where is the sports component? As the name implies, our main protagonists are brought together due to being team members in Kings Row fencing team, but we don’t see a lot of fencing being done. Apart from that I really enjoyed this novel and I just know every fan of the graphic novels will love it! Now let’s look more closely to some aspects of this story!

What to expect from Fence: Striking Distance?

This novel has 4 points of view!

This came as a bit of a surprise, as we mainly follow Nicholas Cox in the graphic novels. But here we also come to know Nicholas’s main rival, Seiji Katayama, and two other clasmates: Harvard Lee, the team captain, and his best friend and the school flirt Aiden Kane. Every point of view offers a new perspective on the events as a whole, and the author made a great job of making them sound distinct! All four narrators have unique voices and Brennan even plays with different writing styles and structures of sentences. While Aiden has a quick and witty mind and Nicholas is best known for his shorter and to-the-point sentences, Seiji sees the world very literally and Harvard is more poetic and introspective.

Another thing I simply have to mention is how my favourite point of view was definitely Aiden’s! He is presented in Fence as this charming flirt who couldn’t care less about fencing or feelings of others – and while this is still the front he keeps up in this novel, we also get to dig deeper with his chapters. We get to really know him and his past and you can’t help but root for him (and break down at his failures). I also really loved Harvard’s chapters, which are filled with so much sunshine that you can basically feel Harvard hugging you. Yes, he is that guy. As sweet as they get.

Seiji… Well Seiji is Seiji and his chapters are filled with that *something* that makes him such a one of a kind character! He is very literal, no-nonsense guy and I am really curious to see what will come of his friendship with Nicholas in the future books.

I must admit that I was slightly disappointed by Nicholas’s chapters. He is the main focus of the graphic novels, but in this book, his voice didn’t really carry. In his chapters, Nicholas comes off as childish and immature. Now mind you, he is only a freshman, but I guess reading a lot of YA, you get used to more mature voices. So I’m not really sure if this is an advantage… finally a teenage boy who sounds like you imagine a teenage boy would, sassy and saying ‘bro’ too many times. I refuse to believe that people use the word ‘bro’ that often. (please tell me I’m right)… or a disadvantage as it makes his chapters somewhat dull and repetitive.

To sum it up, all these distinct voices and writing styles make for a great and entertaining read!

New love interests!

This book brings forth some interesting developments in the love department. The main ship in Fence (as popularised by fans) are Nicholas and Seiji, but in this novel, we can see some other relationships evolving. There were tears and all, so now I need a sequel so I can find out if those certain characters are endgame or not! (No spoilers!)

Did you say fencing?

As I said already, despite this being a novel about fencing, there is sadly not a lot of fencing being done, which was basically the only let down for me. Sports fiction is still not as main-stream as some other subgenres, but series like All for the Game made a big break in it. Now personally, I am not much for sports, but I always love to read about sports in books – mostly fictional ones such as quidditch in Harry Potter and Exy in All for the Game. And as much as Fence graphic novels do widen your knowledge of fencing in general (I am a total newbie but those graphic novels do teach you some basics), this novel barely had any fencing in it.

All in all, Fence: Striking Distance was an entertaining YA novel with a diverse cast of characters and surprising depths when it came to certain topics such as love, family, and acceptance. There was also an inkling of a found family trope and I am super excited to see what comes from this! If you loved Fence graphic novels, you will love this book as well! So mark your calendars and get ready for these four badass fencers to swoop you off your feet! Happy reading!

Fence: Striking Distance is available from Amazon, Book Depository, and other good book retailers, like your local bookstore, as of September 29th 2020.

Synopsis | Goodreads

The boys of Kings Row bout with drama, rivalry, and romance in this original YA novel by The New York Times bestselling author Sarah Rees Brennan–inspired by the award-nominated comic series by C.S. Pacat and Johanna The Mad.

Sixteen-year-old Nicholas Cox is the illegitimate son of a retired fencing champion who dreams of getting the proper training he could never afford. After earning a place on the elite Kings Row fencing team, Nicholas must prove himself to his rival, Seiji Katayma, and navigate the clashes, friendships, and relationships between his teammates on the road to state championships–where Nicholas might finally have the chance to spar with his golden-boy half-brother.
Coach Williams decides to take advantage of the boys’ morale after a recent victory and assigns them a course of team building exercises to further deepen their bonds. It takes a shoplifting scandal, a couple of moonlit forest strolls, several hilariously bad dates, and a whole lot of introspection for the team to realize they are stronger together than they could ever be apart.

The first installment of this enticing original YA novel series by Sarah Rees Brennan, rich with casual diversity and queer self-discovery, explores never-before-seen drama inspired by C.S. Pacat’s critically acclaimed Fence comic series and boasts original cover and interior art by Johanna The Mad.
