It’s been ten years since my novel Dorothy Must Die came out, in which another girl lands in Oz and has to fight an evil Dorothy. Having my tenth anniversary the same year the Wicked movie feels oddly full circle, because Dorothy Must Die is the reason why I write retellings. This week also marks the release of Spell of the Sinister, the sequel to my fairy godmother novel Wish of the Wicked.

Here are five retellings that I love:

Wicked by Gregory Maguire

The best retellings answer a question, or explore an underdeveloped character. Wicked does both. I was endlessly fascinated with the witch from the first time I read The Wizard of Oz. Gregory asks and answers why, and also redefines the witch for this generation and maybe every one after.

Cinder by Marissa Meyer

Perhaps my favorite retelling aside from Wicked. Cinderella in space! If Marissa could take Cinderella to space, then I could place my characters anywhere I wanted, as long as I kept a few touchstones from the original tale. Just wholly original with impeccable worldbuilding.

Cinderella Is Dead by Kalynn Bayron

I absolutely love how Kalynn expands the Cinderella universe. 200 years after the original tale, we meet Sophia and a generation of woman forced to attend balls where they are picked by their future husbands. Sophia wants no part of it, and discovers an alternate history that suggests that Cinderella, too might have had her own qualms about the marriage ball.

Neon Gods by Katee Robert

Such a sexy, refreshing take on the Hades and Persephone myth. I’ve always been fascinated by the myth; the story of a love that literally created seasons has always been intriguing to me. In Katee’s mind, it’s pure fire.

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

Hello Feyre and Tamlin! Sarah’s work starts as a real homage to Beauty and Beast, but she expands it into a vast sprawling fantasy world that goes way beyond the original lore.

Review: House of Flame and Shadow by Sarah J. Maas

I don’t think I have ever feared walking into a store that sells books more than on the days a new Sarah J. Maas book is released. This newest release was no exception, as I watched a very angry fans harass a Walmart employee over an exclusive copy of the book… Like the other books in her series, I ended up devouring this book over the course of 48 hours and I went through quite a few emotions as I was reading. The most recent installment in the Crescent City universe hints at some epic battles as everything that Bryce Quinlan is fighting for comes to a head.

Before we get into the meat and potatoes of this review, please know that there will be spoilers of the previous two books. If you haven’t read them, please click away, but I encourage you to try them out. In the previous book, Bryce Quinlan ended up doing what few that was possible. She has travelled between worlds to save Midgard, but has not ended up where she thought. Stranded in a new and unknown world, she’s going to need her strength and wits about her in order to survive. Meanwhile, Hunt Athalar finds himself in the Asteri dungeons once more, being tortured and stripped of his freedom while his mate’s fate remains shrouded in mystery. The future rests upon the shoulders upon them, but only if they can make it out alive.

Okay! After that very exciting summary, I can honestly say that this book attempted to deliver on a lot of promises, and in my opinion, fell a little short of the expectations. The story had left us in suspense, and with an opportunity to connect the ACOTAR and CC worlds in an amazing way. I will endeavour not to spoil anything about this, but what I will say is that I was a little disappointed in the way that this was executed. It felt like something was missing from Bryce’s interactions with the characters that were featured, and while I understood part of why it was done that way, there was an opportunity to create a deeper connection with some of our favourite characters. What was even more upsetting is that there are bonus chapters within the exclusive editions that give you glimpses into some meaningful moments between certain characters, but you’d have to buy several copies of the book in order to be able to have access to them. This felt more like a marketing opportunity than an actual plot point.

There are some characters that really shined within this book. Ruhn and Lidia was the storyline that I was most excited about. One of them did feel like it came out of nowhere, however, it made sense for the character (won’t say which one because of spoilers). Tharion was another character that had a fascinating story line within House of Flame and Shadow. The romance was great, as usual. It’s a little more interspersed within this book than it was in previous books, but makes sense for the pace.

Although the spice was a little more spaced out, there was a lot of relationship work between characters. I really appreciated that readers got to have more time seeing the development of the relationships, because it helps us understand Bryce and Hunt’s motivations to protect their loved ones, but also establishes a bond between the reader and the characters. I know I’m being deliberately vague, but I am also actively trying to avoid spoilers, despite this review being a couple months past the release of the book. While there was a lot to love about this book, there were also some things that made me love it less than some of the other books/series that I have read by Maas.

The biggest bone I have to pick with this book is the amount of loose threads that were left. We were introduced to several new characters in this book, which had fascinating stories beginning, but ultimately left unfinished. In theory, this is fine because we’ll likely see them come up in future stories…however, it could be years before those stories see the light of day. There were also things that came up within the book that weren’t resolved or seemingly forgotten about. I won’t get into them here, but certain bits about Hel, certain character inconsistencies, and small little plot points that made it feel like something was off. This review is getting quite long, so I’ll stop, but ultimately, this was not my favorite book within this series.

I picked up the first book that Sarah J. Maas wrote (Throne of Glass) when I started college back in 2012. I’ve been a fairly loyal reader since then, and while I have enjoyed each and every one of her books, I have to say that I was a little let down by House of Flame and Shadow. Sometimes, there are books that are trying to be everything for the reader and they fall just shy of that, and in my opinion, this one did not grip me the way that I thought the others would. Perhaps it was over-hyped, but I felt like something was missing from the story and there was some development that was missing that would have further tied everything together. Don’t get me wrong, I ended up devouring the book, which was quite the feat considering I had a very early morning with a toddler looming. If you’re a loyal fan or reader, of course you won’t want to miss it, but for me, this was a 7 out of 10.

A year or so back, I was texting in my favorite group chat about, what else, romance novels, and I asked my best friends what they wanted in their love interests? We’re a diverse group of 40-year old women with complex backgrounds and preferences, but the feedback was unanimous: they wanted, no needed, regular guys. We all love an alpha billionaire with cut abs and a growly bedroom voice, but none of us have ever met one of those in real life. They wanted someone they could actually see themselves encountering at the grocery store, or who might pack their lunch with a note about kicking ass in their board meetings… and not only that, they wanted that to feel just as hot as the (oft toxic) alpha stories they were reading.

To be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever written an alpha male in my life, so this was good news for me. I married my college sweetheart who is the most secure beta male you’ve ever met. He’s my partner, my best friend, and my biggest fan… and he’s inspired every love interest I’ve ever penned.

Out of this conversation, Craig “Huckleberry” Boseman was born. I’d initially planned for Lorelai’s love interest to be her superstar alpha ex Drake Colter, but… I couldn’t stand the guy. Certainly not enough to put Lorelai through the task of falling for him. Craig had just the tiniest cameo in my debut Built to Last. A paragraph or two, tops. He was just some guy I threw in there as a space holder.

And hold space he did. Craig writes erotic poetry, wears reading glasses, has a motorcycle, and likes to hang out with his 12-year-old nephew. He owns his own indie record company, has a soft middle, and loves to give over receive in the bedroom. He drinks good wine, takes care of Lorelai when she’s sick, and wants nothing more than for her to realize her worth. He thinks she hangs the moon and loves her for exactly who she is, and isn’t threatened by her potential.

If you know me, you know I’m a reader first, writer second. So I asked Craig to help me put together a list of our Top 10 “Secure AF Beta Love Interests” for all of you. Mind, these are in no particular order because, obviously, it’s not a competition for these fellas (unless we were comparing how their ladies rank… then they might, I don’t know, raise their voices or write a strongly worded email, I guess).

West Ravenel in “The Devil’s Daughter” by Lisa Kleypas

Ah, West. Ruggedly handsome, utterly masculine, with a voracious appetite for food, life, and sex. Former childhood bully and wastrel, West doesn’t think he could possibly deserve Lady Phoebe even though he’s built his own small empire, complete with a glowing reputation as a fair and honorable man of the people. Despite his self-deprecating ways, he’ll stop at nothing to give Lady Phoebe everything he has if only to make her smile.

Beck Ryder in “America’s Geekheart” by Pippa Grant

Former boyband member and current underwear model and fashion mogul, Beck Ryder has it all. Is it strange to have a demon on this list? Maybe. But Malkom Slaine defies reason. He’s massive, fearless, and loyal. He’s hidden away for centuries, ashamed of who he’s been turned into until it turns out exactly who he is, is exactly who Carrow needs. He’s protective, which maybe some might call an alpha trait, but I don’t see it that way. Protective is fine as long as he sees her value and what she brings to the table, and boy does he! Also, a half demon, half vampire, and his fated witch mate? Sheesh. *fans self*

Meyer Harrington in “Funny Feelings” by Tarah DeWitt

Meyer is a former superstar comedian who stopped touring in order to raise his deaf daughter (DILF alert!) and manage the younger, prettier, up and coming comedic genious Farley Jones. His admiration and respect for Fee, letting her be exactly who she is and pushing her to challenge herself… while clearly pining for her, well. The result is both hilarious and bittersweet. Just like the best comedies.

Rhys, High Lord of the Night Court in “A Court of Mist and Fury” by Sarah J. Maas

“High Lord” doesn’t exactly say “beta” but hear me out. Rhys is secure A.F. He would do anything for his friends (including giving himself up for fifty years of torture to hide his kingdom). He would do anything for Feyre (including watch her marry his enemy). The pride Rhys displays at Feyre’s growth and ascension into power is unmatched and sexy as hell.

Noah Barden in “In a Jam” by Kate Canterbary

Childhood friends to (modern day) marriage of convenience? Yes please. But the real highlight for me is that Noah has been in love with Shay for most of their lives, so much so, that he’ll put himself through the sheer torture of “fake marrying” her just so she can gain possession of her late grandmother’s tulip farm. Oh, and did I mention he’s a dirty talking beta, who makes jam and is ALSO raising his niece as his own?

Jamie Fraser in “Outlander” by Diana Gabaldon

Jamie Fraser has position and power, but not when we first meet him and never when it comes to his relationship with the headstrong and brilliant Claire. It’s not only their age difference, or even the jumping back and forth through the centuries, it’s his straight up loyalty to Claire and his self-assuredness when it comes to handling everything that comes the pair’s way. There’s is a true partnership grown out of respect, adversity, and love.

Josh Im in “Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating” by Christina Lauren

Hazel is the perfect characterization of “if I’m too much, go find less” and Josh Im doesn’t want to. They become best friends on a mission to help each other find love, but as Josh watches time and again as different men fail to understand the brilliance of Hazel, he realizes their mistake is his gain. She’s not too much for him, she’s exactly who he needs and he’s secure enough to love her out loud.

Jason Orson “The Line Up” by Meghan Quinn

It was hard to wrap up this list, but if any one of these characters would be comfortable being last, it would be Jason Orson. Major League baseball player, loyal brother, amateur chef and owner of the “best ass” in baseball (at least according to him). Jason’s undeniable sincerity and unwavering self-confidence hold up to and eventually melt Ice Queen Dottie’s chilly façade. He wears down her rough edges and convinces her to take a chance on him.

Review: House of Sky and Breath by Sarah J. Maas

I was on the edge of my seat the entire time that I read Crescent City: House of Sky and Breath. This highly anticipated sequel managed to tear open the already massive world that had been introduced in the first book, and take it to a whole new level. New characters are introduced, and I feel like this book manages to combine the fantasy aspects of Throne of Glass and the romance of A Court of Thorns and Roses in a whole new story. Then there’s the ending because holy smokes, I’m sure I won’t be alone in this, but I just know there’s some incredible fanart coming over the course of the next year. However, readers be warned: you will need to find something fluffy to read, because this book is going to hurt you.

If you haven’t yet picked up the first part of the Crescent City books, you’re going to want to stop here. There will likely be some spoilers of the previous book, which I recommend you read if you don’t want to get lost in what’s happening.

Bryce and Hunt are doing their best to return to normal after saving Crescent City. However, their every move is watched by the Asteri, who are waiting for any misstep in order to take them down. Unfortunately, peace isn’t long-lasting, and soon Bryce, Hunt, and their friends are thrown into a rebel plot that could turn everything upside down. When faced with the choice of keeping their heads down or doing what’s right, there’s no doubt that they’re going to stare their oppressors dead in the face. The world is getting ready to explode and Bryce and co. will do their damnedest to save it.

Unlike House of Earth and Blood, this novel is well-paced from the very start, which is likely because there isn’t as much worldbuilding to do. Every chapter will leave you wanting to continue, which is hard considering the book is an 800 page monstrosity. However, I would have wept if it had been any shorter.

So much happens in this novel and all of it leads back to Bryce somehow. With all of our favourite characters back and some new ones are introduced, the branches within the story for each of our character perspectives made for an enjoyable read. My favourite character in this book had to be Ruhn, especially when he interacted with his sister. I loved that he and Bryce got to have a sibling relationship on page that isn’t toxic and even better, he treats his sister as an equal and isn’t offended by the fact that his sister’s strength might surpass his.

Of course, a lot of people aren’t reading this book for the sibling relationship, but for some Hunt and Bryce spice. Let me just say, you’ll get what’s coming to you, and you’ll definitely love it. On the other hand, there’s also some serious dialogue about their relationship and where it’s headed. I think readers will appreciate the route that the story is taking as there’s a lot of building trust within one another and acknowledging that they’ve gone through trauma and giving each other space to work it out. There’s exploration of themselves as individuals as well as a couple, which I appreciated.

Hunt and Bryce aren’t the only ones that are getting their romantic relationships. A few of our beloved characters are pulled into play, and it’s anyone’s guess where they are going to wind up. I did have one relationship pairing that I didn’t love, but I will hold off on judgment until the next book to see what will happen. I wish I could say more without spoiling anything, but this one is kind of big.

The plot itself is very engaging. The prologue leads into a much larger mystery for Bryce and Hunt to solve, and of course, there’s some extremely spoilery reveals that are setting things up for an intense next book. What is certain is that nothing in this book seems to be what it’s supposed to be. I won’t say I was surprised by the ending, because it had been hinted at by Maas before, but there will be some very happy readers at the turn of events, I think.

Between the two books, this was by and far better than the first book. I had trouble when I first started House of Earth and Blood because I felt like the pacing was off for around 200 pages, when it suddenly picked up and became quite a bit more engaging. This one was engaging from the start, but also eased readers back into things. I would definitely recommend that readers go back through and catch up on the last book’s events because I felt a little lost until I went back.

10 New Adult Book Recommendations You’ll Love

New adult is a genre for the readers who feel they are too old to read about or relate to the young teen protagonists in a love triangle, but also feel too young to read about older housewives with marital troubles. Authors writing for the new adult genre recognise the transition from teen fiction to early adult as their protagonists are typically aged between eighteen and thirty years old.

Whilst the following books may not necessarily be classified as new adult at your bookstore (since you likely won’t find a dedicated section), they do feature older protagonists that face an array of intriguing topics such as university life, royalty, magic, fantasy, romance, and dysfunctional families.

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Identical twins, Cath and Wren, begin their freshman year of college. Wren wants adventure, to have different experiences, and to make new friends, whereas Cath wants to stay in and work on her fanfiction which can be read alongside the main plot. The girls are pulled in opposite directions. This heartwarming story tests the bonds of sisterhood and opens the door to romance.

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

Ninth House is Leigh Bardugo’s debut into adult writing as she sets her story in Yale University. The protagonist, Alex Stern, investigates the activities of some of Yale’s oldest secret societies in this exciting tale of power, forbidden magic raising the dead and murder. Leigh is well-known for her other series, Shadow and Bone, which has recently been adapted into a television series that is now streaming on Netflix.

Crescent City: House of Earth and Blood by Sarah. J. Maas

This fast-paced story follows Bryce Quinlan, who is half-fae half-human, as she fights for justice for her werewolf friends who were brutally murdered by a demon. She has unwanted help from Hunt Athalar, an enslaved fallen angel. Secrets, betrayals, disowned families and romance are just the tip of the iceberg in this high fantasy. The much awaited sequel, House of Sky and Breath is out February 2022.

Chosen Ones by Veronica Roth

Chosen Ones takes place 15 years after five teenagers, Sloane, Esther, Matt, Ines, and Albie, saved the world from their enemy known as, The Dark One. On the tenth anniversary of his defeat, the gang realise the Dark One’s plans are just beginning and he’s back for revenge. Each character deals with their fame in different ways which makes for interesting insights into their lives. Veronica Roth is also known for the YA series, Divergent.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E Schwab

This story begins in France in 1714 and spans over 300 years across different continents until settling in modern day Manhattan. It flashes back and forth to give the reader a clear understanding of Addie’s past. In what is like a race against time, Addie faces demons from her past in her present life because of a deal with the devil gone wrong. Travel to Venice, London, and Paris alongside Addie on her quest to have someone, anyone, remember her.

Vicious by V.E Schwab

V. E Schwab’s talent as a writer shines through as this story is completely different. Hero, villain, or both? Victor Vale (even his name sounds like a good superhero or a bad villain) lands himself in jail following dalliances with near-death experiences in order to create the supernatural. The story flashes back to before Victor went to prison and to present day when he has been released of his own accord. Eli Ever, Victor’s once friend and now enemy, is not happy about Victor’s escape and plans to stop him. Memorable characters, interesting plot, and a new take on the supernatural, this book has it all. There is a sequel called Vengeful and the third book, Victorious, is yet to be released.

Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

Royalty hasn’t looked this good since Mia Thermopolis took to the throne. After an international incident at a wedding, the Royal family and the President of the United States make arrangements to ensure Prince Henry and Alex, the First Son are seen keeping the peace. In a world of royalty and presidential politics, romance is the last thing on anyone’s mind especially Prince Henry of England and Alex, The First Son.

Vinegar Girl by Anne Tyler

Anne Tyler, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, brings us this modern retelling of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. Kate Battista is a single, 29-year-old who gets wrapped up in one of her father’s latest schemes. Eccentric fathers, little sisters and scientific discoveries makes this book a fun, easy read. For fans of the iconic film 10 Things I Hate About You, this is a must-read for you.

Sweetbitter by Stephanie Danler

This coming-of-age story features 22-year-old protagonist Tess as a small town girl from Ohio who comes to the glamorous city of New York to navigate the restaurant scene. Cocktails and champagne, midnight hours and a dark love triangle shape Tess’ life in ways she could never have imagined. This has also been adapted into a television series on Starz.

Remember Us by Lindsay Blake and Layne James

This list started with twins so why not finish with twins? 25-year-old Ben rings his twin sister, Reese, to inform her of a family illness. She immediately returns to her childhood home in Nebraska where her estranged mother shows up after 13 years. Dysfunctional families make for great stories as this one must confront their past whether they want to or not.
