Heavenbreaker is one of those books that come around once in a while that has the ability to grip the reader’s mind and never let go. Heavenbreaker was certainly not the longest book I’d read this year, but somehow Wolf has written this book in a way that ensures you feel the weight of the burden the protagonist carries. Every single page is one inch more, that the metaphorical hold this book has us in, sinks its talons in; you never lose sight of the measure of danger, desperation, risk, pain and social evils the book highlights. I honestly cannot imagine the state of Wolf’s mind as she wrote this book; was she just as much in the grips of the narrative as we were? Just as devastated and angry? Or was she the puppeteer to whose strings our hearts are pinned to?

The narration in this story alternates between the characters; and depending on the character, the style of narration changes as well—be it first person or third person perspective. Usually I’m not fond of flipping perspectives, I find them disorienting and confusing sometimes. However Wolf has many aspects working for her: from her writing and the artwork, to the very stark difference in each character’s voice that Wolf maintains throughout. The story reads like a movie, flipping camera perspectives to provide greater depth (both into the characters and the plot), clarity and increase the stakes. Heavenbreaker might just be my absolute favourite multiple-POV read.

The plot in Heavenbreaker begins with a very simple idea that can be explained in a single line; but with every page that you turn, you realise that Wolf is dragging you deeper into the unique and dangerous world she has created and you’re absolutely helpless but to follow her through, riveted and in the thrall of the story. By the end of the book, you see just how big a story the author has actually crafted and sit there reeling, turning the page blindly, forgetting the book has ended.

Wolf’s storytelling ability and her style of writing have always been unique and suited to my preferences. However, Heavenbreaker is nothing like I’ve ever seen her write before. The words in this book are claws and talons that hook into your brain and deliver the exact emotion that the protagonist experiences. I think it’s fantastic Wolf has written with such sharp edges and jutting corners, as it matches the voice of the story and characters perfectly. I have never seen her write like this, and I do not think I’ll ever see writing like this again. It’s beautiful to see how far Wolf has come, building on all her strengths and leaning into them heavily and I cannot wait to see where she goes from here.

The characters, are aplenty. It’s a true salute to Wolf’s writing that they all stick true in our minds with absolutely no effort. There are primary, secondary and tertiary characters. This is fine, quite normal, correct? However, these style of characters exist for all of the characters whose mind we sink into and that’s why this story is a feat to write and nail. Which Wolf did.

Synali von Hauteclare is one of the most interesting protagonists I’ve ever read, filled with complexities and contradictions. I have never seen a character more helpless or more powerful. Her reality has been shattered to pieces and she—it feels like—created a whole new world for herself from sheer grit and rage. She’s whip smart, furious, powerful and vulnerable. I cannot imagine a better heroine who could have been written with the strength to carry the weight of this story until the end.

There are many aspects of a book that need to come together to make it work. Whether it’s a light fluffy rom-com or a revenge-action-thriller set in space. One of the most complex aspects of a book to write is the worldbuilding and it would have been so easy for Wolf to have lost us at any point of the story because of how complex the reality of the world in Heavenbreaker is; but somehow the author only reels you further and further in, unravelling only as much as we need to know and as much as we can take at that time. The progress is extremely even and cumulative in nature and the set-up for book two is complete. This likely means the sequel will take off flying from the word go.

The pace in Heavenbreaker never lets up. You neither have a moment to breathe nor think. You are simply whatever Wolf wants you to be, think and do. From the very first page to the very last, I was lost to Wolf’s words and it won’t matter who the reader is or what their preferences are, this book will work for every reader because the author has used every weapon in her arsenal to ensure this book hits the mark and it does. Every page of Heavenbreaker strikes true.

Heavenbreaker is a singular and never-seen-before story that’s addictive, deeply emotional and powerful. Ten out of ten. Please check trigger warnings, this book is extremely heavy and can be emotionally gruelling.

In the prehistoric days before the internet, encyclopedias were A Thing.

As a child you never go seeking encyclopedias – they sort of just fall into your lap. In my case, the more serious aunts who didn’t know any better about my niche interests in catching bugs or watching anime wrapped encyclopedias up and presented them to me on Christmas. ‘It’s the thought that counts’, Mom said, and I huffed and returned to my far more interesting video games.

But one day the batteries ran out in the video game, and so I picked up that big, boring encyclopedia.

What followed was ten years of an increasingly slippery slope into the world of history – Greek myth, European humorism, Egyptian mummification processes, Silk Road anecdotes…I ravenously devoured this new world of interesting facts and figures. As an added bonus, I could tell these facts swimming around the soup of my adolescent head to adults and reap the rewards of glowing pride when they smiled and said “Oh really? I didn’t know that.” It was a modicum of control in a childhood world that was rapidly spiraling out of my hands and into a divorce, but it was such a decade of impactful growth that its echoes reverberate in how I learn today; through Wikipedia.

I read Wikipedia. For fun, mostly, until it comes time to write and research a novel, and then it becomes business.

Reading Wikipedia itself doesn’t teach you anything concrete, really, except for the fact that perhaps you don’t know anything at all. When researching for books you can’t rely on Wikipedia to tell you exactly how or why, but you can get a broad sense of things, and sometimes all you need as a writer is a shallow pool of a beginning. Writers are used to making mountains out of molehills, entire fanfictions out of a single glance, and Wikipedia is an endless buffet of shallow pools to make deeper with imagination. All that’s required is you prop up the sides with things that feel real.

My newest soft sci-fi book HEAVENBREAKER was actually born out of a single line I read on Wikipedia; ‘In jousting, the knights experience close to 3.25 times their body weight in G-forces when the lance collides with their armor’. I thought it was strange to see the word G-force – something used primarily in astronaut training and the like – in conjunction with such an old-world sport as jousting. The idea of combining old with new really struck me, and thus my idea for HEAVENBREAKER was born; giant robots jousting in space. Perfect.

I knew fragments of medieval history, and I admit even to this day I’m no scholar, but the internet is a treasure trove of people who know more than you about any one subject, and I followed all sorts of scholarly accounts in order to absorb some of their knowledge. Most of my own knowledge came from reading historical fiction like The Royal Diaries series, which delved into the lives of prominent royal girls throughout history such as Elizabeth I and Eleanor of Aquitaine, and various history textbooks. History isn’t just written word, though – it lives on in things like food and accounts of every day life. In medieval Europe, writing was reserved primarily for royalty and monks, so the amount of firsthand accounts of peasant life is dismal. We have to infer a lot, and I looked to things like food and clothing and art to fill in those menial, everyday life gaps. There are a stunning amount of historical recreators on YouTube, and pouring through dozens of them led me to one conclusion; humans are humans no matter what the time period. We value ease and comfort and socialization, and nothing beats a hot meal and clean clothes.

The internet truly helped me ground a book like HEAVENBREAKER in tangible terms; even though the book takes place in the far future of 3442, humans remain human. All of my book research about physics and space vacuums and AI and the possibility of black holes pales in comparison to the fundamental reality of being alive. The intricacies of an encyclopedia or a cut-and-dry article cannot contain the fact that we are, always, human.

No matter the leaps in our technology, in a hundred years we will still value what resonates with our souls; seeing each other’s faces and sharing a meal. That will never change.

And at the end of the day, when all the research has faded, that is how you write.

By being human.

The first book had us sinking straight into the worlds of Zera, Lucien, Malachite, and Fione and they become beloved to us in a moment, dragging us into their lives and emotions until we yearn to experience the connection they share. The second book takes everything we know and love and sets it aside and we start to scramble to understand this new world where everything we know has changed. By the end of the second book, the shock we receive is unexpected as everything comes together and the pain of the change recedes in the face of the truth.

The final instalment picks up from the absolute second that the previous one stopped at and the moment was a stark memory in my mind that needed no reminder. The tension, fear, and foreboding are right there with the reader as the book spirals because of one single choice that everyone grapples to control the consequences of.

Zera is everything we remember her to be and her relationship with her friends grow and blossom from the seeds she’d sowed and nurtured in the beginning. But Zera now carries a blame that weighs the weight of a world of lives and she’s determined to do whatever she needs to do to save the world and this time she has all the help and support of her friends.

Lucien, whose pain was almost a lash against our senses in the previous book, is once again the man we recognise. What makes him one of my most favourite characters that Sara Wolf has ever written is that he is worthy of being King. A man who would truly get down to his knees and get his hands dirty to help his people. He’s strong, kind, honourable to a fault and very very smart. Scenes with him and Zera are the most heartwarming parts of the book and seeing them together after all this time—without secrets, lies, and pain dragging them down—is the biggest dream come true.

Malachite and Fione are very worthy of being two of the best supporting characters that have been written, not just because of how they hold up their friends but because their own personalities and stories are relevant and strongly woven into the plot.

However, there is something that is bigger than just the four of them and it might just take all of them to solve the oldest puzzle that has been a song in the pain of so many. But this time, Zera wants to do it right. The plot comes together beautifully and the author reminds us again that only a right can undo a wrong, no matter how big the cost of the right may seem.

It took me three books to see something that Sara Wolf has been saying all along and she has messages within messages that were wrapped so beautifully within a fantasy plotline that you almost don’t see it until it all comes together in a single moment and you can’t overlook it anymore. Sara Wolf took mental health and wove it into the biggest part of the story line. The most prominent struggle that Zera faces throughout the book is fighting against that inner voice that asks her every single what-if question out there and we see her grow to answer all those doubts, fears and anxiety about being hurt and never being enough with strength and faith and never letting the fear stop her from doing what’s right. The author also subtly speaks about hurting the largest givers of our lives and the effect it has on us in return.

Sara Wolf has done beautifully with representation and I truly feel this series is underrated and deserves so much more love and attention. It’s a big ten for me, with all my heart.

Atmospheric, thrilling, and enthralling. For me, these are the three words that can best describe The Unfairfolk. This book is the first of a new series from Sara Wolf that will beguile readers from the first chapter until the very last.

The Unfairfolk follows Lilith Pierce as she puts on her brave face and flies to a foreign a country to attend a prestigious boarding school, as her mother and her new husband enjoy a luxurious honeymoon around the world. In Institut Le Silvere, she meets Ciel Lautrec, an otherworldly person she can’t help but feel attracted to, and Alistair Strickland, a seemingly cruel lawkeeper she keeps running into. Unfortunately for Lilith, she also encounters other people, things, and creatures that she just can’t ignore. Like Von Arx who seemed to hate her the first time they meet, or Knight Durand, a building inside the school grounds that’s been on renovation for several years now, the man with fiery red eyes who seems to be stalking her, and more. What Lilith doesn’t know is that she’s about to uncover something else in this school, and it will all start with the forest.

The writing style is atmospheric in every way possible. The author never fails to make the reader feel so much of the character’s thoughts and emotions, or the surroundings or setting of a current scene, or the ominous threat that seems to loom over the characters. There were a number of times when I truly felt the eeriness of a scene being described in the book, as if I was watching a scene from a horror movie. It’s also impressive how the tone changes every time the point of view switches in every chapter. There’s the first person point of view from Lilith and a third person point of view that alternates between Ciel Luatrec and Alistair Strickland. In every chapter, the tone changes and it matches the characters and the setting so well that it just pulls you in the moment.

The characters are absolutely enthralling. They all have their own personalities and each of them offers a story to tell to the readers. Lilith Pierce is one hilarious (yet deeply scarred) main character. I love her humour and her frankness, but at the same time, there are moments that she was childish. And she knows this herself, she knows it’s her flaw. Alistair Strickland, on the other hand, is layered. I thought I already knew his character, but he kept surprising me as the story progressed. Last but not the least, Ciel Lautrec is one intriguing character. There’s something unnerving about him, whether it be his beauty or his personal (and obscure) ambitions. These characters have a lot more to show to the readers, and I’m excited to see them in the sequel.

I also love how the book touched on several social issues, and I hope the author will tackle more of them in the next books. Lilith and her mother, as well as other characters, are victims of abuse and went through traumatic events. Social class and power imbalance are also a primary theme in the book. We see how toxic and detached rich people can be. And we see how being a child of powerful and influential people means never experiencing normal things and always being too careful around the public. Sexuality is also talked about in the book, albeit in brief passing moments.

The plot is intriguing, mysterious, and thrilling in a way that you’re excited to know what happens next but also very afraid of what the next chapter will bring. I have to say though, at its entirety, the book seems like a prologue. A lot of events transpired in the book, yes, but the progress of the main conflict went slow. It wasn’t until the last 20% of the book that we truly got to know more of the sinister man that’s been following Lilith, or the magical yet strange things that roam around the Institut Le Silvere. As a result, the ending feels a lot like a cliffhanger. But at the same time, it also feels like a promise—a promise that there’s something more and that it’s just the beginning of the story.

Overall, this book is a great read, and the Valenbound series seems promising as ever. I can’t wait to read the next book and see what comes of Lilith’s journey!

Zera is heartless. Literally. A witch saved her from death by making her a heartless and in return, she has to serve the witch. With the threat of war around the corner that could leave the witches decimated again, Zera is sent to the kingdom to take the heart of Lucien, the crown prince of Cavanos. It should be easy right? After all, she only has to win the prince’s heart (literally).

Except, it turns out there are some… complications along the way.

Bring Me Their Hearts is a YA fantasy book that promises a lot of banter, action, and of course, a star-crossed romance. In a market where almost every other book promises the same thing, Bring Me Their Hearts really needs to deliver to stand out or twist the common tropes into something else. After reading this book, I can say that it certainly succeeds in some of these areas!

This book was incredibly fun to read, and this is mainly because of all the characters being quite snarky, which makes for great dialogue. While it was amusing at first, as the story continues it did begin to become too much causing the characters to blur together due to their similarities. Other than their wits, they all have a ‘more that meets the eye’ personality going on. The characters are also reminiscent of those which have become popular in YA. For example, a female assassin is sent to murder someone resulting in them earning their freedom, along with their love for pretty dresses, frequent quips and banter, and falling in love with someone who they are supposed to kill.

Personally, the secondary characters were more intriguing, such as Malachite and Lady Y’shennria, and it would be great to learn more about them, especially the latter because she formed a really amazing relationship and story with Zera. Plus Malachite seems quite interesting because he’s part of this race known as the Beneathers.

The world building is incredible and well fleshed out, without dumping too much information on us. We get to learn about the different races, the Sunless war, their religions, and the political issues they face. The religions especially play a huge part in the story as it’s important in the history of Cavanos, especially in the recent war. We see the people living in poverty while the royals and nobles live in opulence in the middle of it all… So cue the alleys, drinking taverns, chaotic markets and some high-speed thief chases.

Although the plot was enjoyable to read, it did carry the predictability that has become come in YA with their ‘tried-and-true’ formula. That being said, the way the story unfolded was great with it starting off with Zera being presented at the Spring Welcoming, before moving back to the point where she was initially recruited. The story then moves forward until we reach the starting point before continuing onward to what happens after the Welcoming. Since this is Zera’s first time going to court, she had to learn everything about the kingdom and court, which as a result, we get to experience everything alongside Zera without it being overkill. While it may sound slightly confusing, it’s not something I have encountered before.

Overall, despite having a great time reading it with its political intrigue and action, it did blur together with other YA fantasy books. However, hopefully in the next book we will see more of the side characters. With the major cliffhanger at the end of this book, I’m interested to see how the next book will take us.
