We chat with author Peng Shepherd about All This & More, which is an inventive new novel about a woman who wins the chance to rewrite every mistake she’s ever made… and how far she’ll go to find her elusive “happily ever after.”

Hi, Peng! Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

Hi! My name is Peng (rhymes with “Young”), and I write character-driven stories with a speculative edge. I’m the author of THE CARTOGRAPHERS, which became a national bestseller, THE BOOK OF M (whose twist ending, apparently, makes people cry), and the upcoming ALL THIS AND MORE, which is out on July 9th!

I live in Brooklyn, and whenever I’m not writing, I’m either traveling or eating—usually dumplings.

When did you first discover your love for writing and stories?

It’s a funny story, actually. As a child, I loved books, and as soon as I learned to spell, I began trying to write and illustrate my own stories for fun. My mom, being a good mom, encouraged my interests, and one day, when I proudly presented my latest creation to her, she decided it would be a cute surprise to take my project to her office to laminate the pages and bind them with a plastic spiral spine. When she got home from work that evening, she called me over and showed me my bound, finished book—and apparently, I thought I had been published. If only it were really that easy, right? But the joy I felt in that moment, seeing my first “book,” definitely had a huge effect on me.

Quick lightning round! Tell us:

The first book you ever remember reading: The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss

The one that made you want to become an author: Perchance by Michael Kurland

The one that you can’t stop thinking about: The Earthsea series by Ursula K Le Guin

Your latest novel, All This & More, is out July 9th! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

“Would you change your past?”

What can readers expect?

A roller coaster ride that falls somewhere between a mystery and a thriller, with a healthy dash of science fiction thrown in. Imagine being chosen to be a contestant on a futuristic game show that can send you back in time to rewrite your past choices so you can have exactly the life you’ve always wanted, down to the very last detail—except someone or something else might be trying to manipulate your fate at the same time.

Where did the inspiration for All This & More come from?

I wrote the novel because I really wanted to explore the relationship between happiness and truth in this world of nearly infinite options we live in. Options are wonderful up to a certain point—but none of us were prepared to be online 24/7, consuming a never-ending stream of advertisements and social media. It’s becoming harder and harder to tell what’s real anymore, and I think that’s corrupting our ability to understand ourselves and what matters to us. Even if we don’t have the ability to tweak every single aspect of our lives until everything is perfect, we all still struggle with the same timeless questions at the heart of the book. When there’s more than one path ahead, how do you decide which is the right one? And more importantly, how you learn to live with those choices?

Were there any moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?

Part of the thrill of writing this novel was that every couple chapters or so, everything “resets” on the characters a bit like a puzzle box (see the next question). It was definitely a challenge to make sure that the story tied together in a way that was exciting and meaningful, but it was also really fun to turn a subplot or a person or a location sideways and force the characters to grapple with those consequences.

In particular, there’s one character named Ren that was very interesting to write. He’s an old flame of Marsh (the protagonist), who reappears in her present life after she changes something in her past, and he bears the brunt of these “resets”—becoming more and more different from his original self the further into the story you get—until it’s hard to tell exactly which version of him is the real one.

This book can either be read straight through or in “choose your own adventure” style. Was this always part of the initial concept? How did you go about structuring it?

Yes, I had always planned the story to have multiple paths! ALL THIS AND MORE is about the allure and danger of choice, something we all face in our own lives, so I really wanted readers to be able to experience that same thrill of having the power to alter their past right alongside Marsh. You still can read the novel straight through like a typical book, but if you’re feeling brave, you also can influence what Marsh decides at certain points—which could change her story.

Believe it or not, I actually wrote the whole first draft without a “map” of all the paths and how they linked up. It was daunting, but I was worried that if I needed to rely on an outside guide in the early phases, some of the possible storylines might feel too engineered instead of true to Marsh’s personality and emotions. It was only once I really knew who Marsh was and all of her possible fates that I finally built the map.

What’s next for you?

I’m partway through the first draft of my next book now. It’s a dark, twisty psychological suspense about body doubles secretly hired to impersonate a famous, powerful person, and what happens as their lives become more and more entwined with each other’s and they start to lose their grasp on their own identities.

Lastly, what books have you enjoyed so far this year and are there any that you can’t wait to get your hands on?

I recently read HUM by Helen Phillips, who is so good at turning a normal, mundane moment into something deeply unsettling, and THE CENTRE by Ayesha Manazir Siddiqi, which was deliciously creepy. And I’m really excited to read Lev Grossman’s THE BRIGHT SWORD when it’s released in mid-July.

From the critically acclaimed author of The Book of M, a highly imaginative thriller about a young woman who discovers that a strange map in her deceased father’s belongings holds an incredible, deadly secret—one that will lead her on an extraordinary adventure and to the truth about her family’s dark history.

Intrigued? Well read on to discover the synopsis and an excerpt from Peng Shepherd’s The Cartographers, which releases on March 15th 2022.

Nell Young’s whole life and greatest passion is cartography. Her father, Dr. Daniel Young, is a legend in the field, and Nell’s personal hero. But she hasn’t seen or spoken to him ever since he cruelly fired her and destroyed her reputation after an argument over an old, cheap gas station highway map.

But when Dr. Young is found dead in his office at the New York Public Library, with the very same seemingly worthless map hidden in his desk, Nell can’t resist investigating. To her surprise, she soon discovers that the map is incredibly valuable, and also exceedingly rare. In fact, she may now have the only copy left in existence… because a mysterious collector has been hunting down and destroying every last one—along with anyone who gets in the way.

But why?

To answer that question, Nell embarks on a dangerous journey to reveal a dark family secret, and discover the true power that lies in maps…

A long time ago, the room in which Nell was now standing had been her favorite place in the whole city. The public areas of the New York Public Library were breathtaking—she could not deny the almost otherworldly beauty of the rich wood-paneled walls, the gleaming chandeliers overhead, and the old windows that loomed from floor to ceiling—but it was the simple, endless archives of the Map Division that had secretly kept her heart. They contained tens of thousands of books and atlases, and almost half a million sheet maps, in their vast stores. If Nell had ever believed in magic, here would have been the place where she would have gone looking for it.

Even now, as she ran her hands over the back of her father’s leather office chair and breathed in the musty scent of ancient paper and wood, it was hard not to imagine that there could be some secret tucked between the pages of an unassuming text. Long before they’d stopped speaking to each other, when he’d brought her to work with him in her youth, he had set her on its well-worn cushion and promised her in his deep, solemn voice that this office would be hers one day.

She had believed him.

“Heart attack,” the officer said, to draw Nell’s attention back. “He probably went fast.”

“Age catches up to us all, unfortunately,” his partner added.

“I just . . .” Nell sighed. Despite everything—the chasm between her and her father, the damage they’d both done to each other—tears were threatening. She pinched the bridge of her nose to stop them from falling.

“Why don’t we give her a minute?” Swann suggested to Lieutenant Cabe and his partner, who politely withdrew to the other side of the room. “Are you all right, my dear?” he asked once they were alone.

“Yes,” she said. She didn’t know.

“Let me get you a tissue.” He patted her shoulder. “I’ll be right back.”

Nell smiled gratefully. “Thank you.”

The library’s back offices swirled quietly around her as she sat huddled on the edge of her father’s desk, next to the mess strewn across it. Researchers were finally getting to work in their cubicles, turning on their computers and shuffling through their mail. And past the staff door, patrons were browsing the stacks and choosing seats at reading tables, clicking on lamps and pulling out notebooks and flipping pages. Children were running through aisles and sneaking around the lobby. Taxis were pulling up and dropping off passengers outside. Nell tried to think about all of it out there, and nothing in here.

Gradually, she realized her hand was resting on the corner of the desk where the hidden lock was.

Ever dramatic, her father long ago had a secret compartment built into his desk that only he, she, and perhaps Swann knew about. He kept especially valuable maps inside while working on them for security’s sake, he’d said, even though the NYPL had never been robbed in the history of its existence. But when Nell was young, and he’d been a slightly gentler version of himself, he had also hidden little notes to her there as well, and she would reply with childish drawings of maps she’d copied or created herself.

All she had to do was push her index finger forward a little bit. The dullest, quietest thud told her the compartment had opened.

Slowly, without moving anything but her hand, she reached inside.

There was just one thing there this time: a slim, leather-bound shape. Not a book, but a leather portfolio. She moved her fingers another subtle inch, feeling the familiar texture.

It was the leather portfolio, she was certain. The one that had belonged to her mother before she’d died, and Nell’s father had taken to using it as a way to remember her.

As a child, the portfolio had held almost magical power to Nell. She used to watch her father slip it into and out of his briefcase when he went to the library or came home in the evening, trying to imagine what beautiful work could lay inside that time. There were other maps he brought home too, but those came in cheap plastic sleeves or cardboard folders. Only the most valuable, the most rare, of maps were carried in the leather portfolio. Nell often wondered at all of the priceless maps she must have laid eyes on as a small girl that she couldn’t even remember now. Long after she and her father had stopped talking, she had sometimes thought of the portfolio, about the things he still carried inside it.

And now here it was. Hidden in the mess.

Lieutenant Cabe and his partner were still by the door of the office, the two of them giving instructions to the rest of the employees in the corridor, and Swann was over at the bookcase, plucking tissues gently out of a box to bring back to Nell.

For a split second, no one was looking at her.

Before she could think about what a huge mistake it would be, how much trouble it could get her into, Nell slipped the portfolio out from the compartment and into her tote bag in one smooth motion and returned her hand to the top of the desk.

They saw the news about Joshi and thought it was contained to India. Then, while attending a friend’s wedding, they receive the bad news. It has hit America and it’s coming for them too. After living in solitude for years, the worst has happened. Max has lost her shadow and soon she won’t remember Ory or the life they have shared.

Mahnaz Ahmadi is Iranian but lives in the USA, training to compete in the Olympics for archery. She hasn’t spoken to her mother since she left her home country. Preparing for a training session, she sees the news about Hemu’s disappearing shadow and fears the worst. Strapped for cash and not able to see her family again, she lives in fear of never knowing what happened to her sister.

The amnesiac has no recollection of his past, losing his memories in a vehicular trauma. Starting anew when the news about India hits, his doctors whisk him away to see if he can help determine the cause of the shadowless epidemic. A man without a past but still possessing his shadow, could he be the key to unlocking the mysteries of Hemu’s ailment and saving the world?

Essentially, The Book of M is a love story. Orlando is trying to stop the love of his life from losing her memory and then after she disappears, he is trying to find her in the wasteland of Shepherd’s near future. It doesn’t feel like a romance though. Yes, it tugs the heart-strings, but it doesn’t have the soppy feel of a romance novel. Not even close.

The story revolves around four main characters—Orlando, the man desperate to find his wife; Max, the woman who will do anything to remember the life she previously led; Mahnaz, a loving sister and woman warrior; and The One Who Gathers, a mysterious stranger and collector of lost souls, who everyone has heard of but no one has ever seen.

The narrative is told from three different viewpoints, with the majority of chapters ending with Max’s current whereabouts, her plight captured on a voice recorder she received from Orlando when she became a shadowless. Transitioning regularly between viewpoints, this story could have felt tedious. In reality though, Shepherd jumps POV’s flawlessly (mostly) and gives the reader a unique insight into the ruined world that has eventuated from the population losing their memory.

Throughout the story, I found myself continuously enthralled with the plight of the characters. When it reached a point where the action died down, regular twists and turns were thrown in to maintain the interest of the audience. The Book of M opens on Orlando leaving the safety of his hotel come apartment to forage for supplies, as any food the couple had initially found has all but been completely consumed. Desperate to keep Max comfortable until the inevitable happens, Ory sees a deer and plans to capture it for sustenance. Until he sees it no longer has antlers, tiny wings taking their place.

Basically, it opened with a bang. The pace throughout is relatively continuous, although there were a few lulls in the story to start with. While some twists were thoroughly predictable, the finale will leave the reader enraged—you will be sure you know how it turns out, then it will all turn on its head and leave you angry and sad and just a giant ball of every strong feeling you could ever have.

The character development was spectacular. Each main character was thoroughly fleshed out and had a believable back story—Ory and Max were lovers determined to stay together to the end; Mahnaz just wanted to see her family one last time; and The One Who Gathers, while initially shrouded in secrecy as to their identity, pulls the entire cast together, rounding out the entire crew. This delivers a hard-hitting narrative which will cause the least emotional person to feel for the plight of everyone involved.

Although all characters were well written, the stand out was Max. Despite the fact that she is running away from one person and towards what could be seen as false hope, she still packs a punch with every paragraph involving her. The sequences relating to her voice recorder are masterfully executed with her gradually losing her memory in an order that is both logical and heartwrenchingly painful.

Secondary characters are in no way forgotten either. While initial interactions are seemingly coincidence, it soon becomes obvious that everything within this monster of a novel happens for a reason. Sometimes a horrible, soul stealing reason but a reason nonetheless.

While world building would usually be an important part of a review, all you need to know is that the characters are on a run across the United States, heading towards New Orleans in search of The One Who Gathers. The scenery has changed so much however, that at times you can’t compare it to what you already feel like you know. A rampaging Statue of Liberty causes chaos, The Whitehouse becomes less a seat of power and more just a building inside, which people hope to survive the coming storm. It’s interesting but not integral because the characters carry the story better than any expert world building ever could.

Overall opinion? This monster of a book will tear your heart out and stomp all over before rinsing and repeating. By the end, the reader feels so engrossed in the story that its ending will leaving you reeling in shock. You may think you know how it ends, but Shepherd throws in a final twist that will make you want to throw your book at a wall. If there is any novel the author of this review would recommend from the releases so far this year, it’s The Book of M.

The Book of M is available from Amazon, Book Depository, and other good book retailers.

Synopsis | Goodreads

Set in a dangerous near future world, The Book of M tells the captivating story of a group of ordinary people caught in an extraordinary catastrophe who risk everything to save the ones they love. It is a sweeping debut that illuminates the power that memories have not only on the heart, but on the world itself.

One afternoon at an outdoor market in India, a man’s shadow disappears—an occurrence science cannot explain. He is only the first. The phenomenon spreads like a plague, and while those afflicted gain a strange new power, it comes at a horrible price: the loss of all their memories.

Ory and his wife Max have escaped the Forgetting so far by hiding in an abandoned hotel deep in the woods. Their new life feels almost normal, until one day Max’s shadow disappears too.

Knowing that the more she forgets, the more dangerous she will become to Ory, Max runs away. But Ory refuses to give up the time they have left together. Desperate to find Max before her memory disappears completely, he follows her trail across a perilous, unrecognizable world, braving the threat of roaming bandits, the call to a new war being waged on the ruins of the capital, and the rise of a sinister cult that worships the shadowless.

As they journey, each searches for answers: for Ory, about love, about survival, about hope; and for Max, about a new force growing in the south that may hold the cure.

Their pilot’s quick evasive action means that the tour group escape with their lives – but as the dust settles, they realize they may be the only survivors . . . Adrift in outer space, out of contact with civilization, and on a vastly under-equipped ship, these passengers are out of their depth. Their chances of getting home are close to none, and with the threat of another attack looming they must act soon – or risk perishing in the endless void of space.

If Indiana Jones lived in the X-Files era, he might bear at least a passing resemblance to Nolan Moore — a rogue archaeologist hosting a documentary series derisively dismissed by the “real” experts, but beloved of conspiracy theorists. Nolan sets out to retrace the steps of an explorer from 1909 who claimed to have discovered a mysterious cavern high up in the ancient rock of the Grand Canyon. And, for once, he may have actually found what he seeks. Then the trip takes a nasty turn, and the cave begins turning against them in mysterious ways.
