As of right now Netflix has the first 3 seasons of the Outlander series available with four seasons having aired on STARZ. But is it any good? I can say without a doubt (having watched it twice already in 2019) that this is a series worth watching.

Based on the Outlander book series by Diana Gabaldon, which was originally published in 1991, it was brought to life in 2014 by STARZ. It follows Claire Randall, a modern 20th century woman as she unintentionally travels back through time to 1743 Scotland. She must adapt or die as she tries to figure out how to make it back to her own time, and to her husband, Frank. Armed with only her wits and medical knowledge from her time as a nurse in WWII, she uses her interests in plants to manoeuvre her way through the highlands and along the way she stumbles into witchcraft, love, and rebellion.

Fans of Game of Thrones and the recently finished TV series, Reign may want to consider this show as well, as it mixes court intrigue and war simultaneously to bring another addictive drama to television. If you remember the 2003 movie, Timeline starring Gerard Butler and Paul Walker, this show shares a similar concept. However, be warned! This show is definitely for an adult audience and contains many unsettling scenes which include nudity, sexual assault, violence, and gore.

With that being said, here’s eight reasons as to why you need to watch this show, or perhaps even rewatch it for the second (or sixth) time!

1. Authenticity

The Scottish are famous for their beautifully plaid kilts and these are heavily used. There were four tartans created and crafted for the show, and each of them sported dull colours of brown and green. Fashion designer, Terry Dresbach did intense research into 18th century fashion to craft each and every costume. To keep it as authentic and true to the time, the tartans had to be compromised of the washed out colours associated with vegetable dyes and that made their kilts easy camouflage. The bright colours we’ve seen since are actually accredited to the 19th century. All tartans were woven by Anthony Haines Textiles based in Selkirk, Scotland. All dresses were all hand sewn and featured no zippers and no Velcro, just laced corsets. And this was all to stay as real as possible.

2. James Alexander Malcolm Mackenzie Fraser

Jamie Fraser is played by actor Sam Heughan and his performance is incredible. The 38-year-old Scot seems to capture this young, headstrong, and naïve character in Jamie so well. He’s honourable and genuine and a complete heart throb. He also has amazing chemistry with his co-star and love interest, Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser, portrayed by Caitriona Balfe.

Heughan was also the first to be cast back in 2013. “From the very beginning, I knew the part of Jamie Fraser would be difficult to cast. I had no one in mind for the part. I knew that someone would just come into the audition and be Jamie Fraser. And that’s what Sam did,” said executive producer, Ronald D. Moore

The role of Jamie was originally going to be left to last but according to Gabaldon, “That man is a Scot to the bone and Jamie Fraser to the heart. Having seen Sam Heughan not just act, but be Jamie, I feel immensely grateful to the production team for their painstaking attention to the soul of the story and characters.”

And that was that. I definitely think Heughan was the perfect fit for the role of Jamie, from the very first episode you can see what she sees in him!

3. Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser

Claire is a modern woman. Stubborn, intelligent, and armed with a strong tongue, falling into a place where women’s rights are nonexistent is definitely challenging for her and yet she thrives in it. Her character seems to teach the 18th century a lesson about women that they won’t understand for centuries and that is definitely her doing and Balfe executed Claire brilliantly! This actress is amazing and just like Heughan, you can tell that she’s the right match from the very beginning. She has a strong stance and a confidence that made her such a great choice for the female lead.

4. The Beautiful Backdrop

This is a show that takes place in 18th century Scotland and they actually filmed it in Scotland! This fact actually blows my mind a little bit, especially given how many times they seem to film in places like Vancouver for most shows these days such as Supernatural, The 100, and Shadowhunters so you know filming on location is a great feature that I think many people will like! Plus it’s absolutely gorgeous there and if you plan on going there, there’s an actual map that traces the film sites from the show!

5. It’s Something New

This is a story born from Doctor Who and was transformed into a historical science fiction romance thus creating an entirely new genre! It’s unique and caters to a range of people because it takes from several genres and it’s done incredibly well. I’m not a huge fan of science fiction and yet this little dash of time travel was so clever and that whole concept mixed with history makes it fascinating.

How would you adapt if you were put in Claire’s shoes? My answer? Not well, but it gets you thinking doesn’t it? It shows how far we’ve come and how resilient our past has been against odds that we cannot even fathom.

6. Built on respect

We all know of the horror stories that are book to screen adaptations. Things get cut, the wrong people get cast, and important scenes and qualities that make up the integrity of the novel seem to be displaced. It’s not a pretty sight and usually angers readers and makes them resent the film version. I have not read the books but I have done tons of research and I think that Moore did an excellent job of developing this for TV. When the idea first came forward, it was proposed that they do 2-hour movies for each book and despite risking the whole project, he said that that was just not possible. They needed to be given justice and instead it became a TV series. Both Moore and his wife are fans of the books and wouldn’t settle for less and I truly believe that passion made the show’s success.

Diana Gabaldon also worked together with Moore as a TV consultant, which I find really important because many adaptations seem to fall flat from the original and having the author working alongside them makes all the difference.

7. The Infamous Scottish Temperament

Scots have been known to have a feisty and stubborn as a mule reputation and I am so glad that that was so clear in this show as it makes for a lot of the humour. There aren’t many shows based in Scotland and its people and this one showed so much of the culture! So if you’re interested in Scotland or just love their bullheadedness, you’ll like this show.

The clash of Jamie’s Scottish and Claire’s English backgrounds mixed with the time travel is hilarious to watch! There’s this one scene where she calls him a “fucking sadist” and he has no clue what she’s talking about and it’s funny because everyone watching knows. This adds a really good layer to the plot and definitely shows that Claire is a modern woman and even with the threat of death, she stays true to that. It’s also that modern thinking that almost makes her seem like a Scot as well because she shares a lot of qualities and her stubborn passion to fight seems to make her one. It helps her get respect and creates a bond that they can relate to, helping fix the massive gap between the Scottish and the English which is at the heart of this story.

8. It’s Based On Books!

I left this reason last because it’s important. So far they have done one book for each season, having just wrapped up season 4 in January, it will be a while before the new season starts. However, Gabaldon has written and published 8 books so far in the series so there’s an easy fix while you wait! You can just pick up the next book!

And with that, Outlander has been renewed for a fifth and sixth season as of November 2018 so there will be plenty more to come!

Droughtlander is over once more! The hit STARZ series returned today with its Season 4 premiere, which sees our characters in another new country! In Season 3 of Outlander, Claire returned to her own time after the Battle of Culloden and lived her life with Frank, while raising her and Jamie’s child, Brianna. 20 years passed until Claire learned that Jamie survived the Battle, and he certainly had a rough 20 years with essentially becoming an empty shell of person, to being imprisoned once more. He was also forced to lay with a woman who then bore his child meaning Jamie could not be a father yet again. However, Claire came rushing back into his life and within 24 hours, a man was dead and Jamie was in trouble. When young Ian is captured, the pair set off to Jamaica to rescue him, but Claire was held hostage on another ship to tend to the sick before escaping to an island. Thankfully Jamie’s ship had troubles and they wound up on the same island. Eventually they make it to Jamaica where Geillis has young Ian and plans to go after Brianna due to some far-fetched prophecy, but Claire winds up killing her. Then, to top it all off, they end up in a huge storm and find themselves shipwrecked on the shores of North Carolina….in America.

So with all of that and Claire being with Jamie again, we just know this season is going to have many more highs and lows from trouble with new characters, to Claire inevitably causing a scene in each episode!

Circles Upon Circles

The episode kicks off with the natives building a stone circle in 2000 BC in North America when they later begin their own dance, while Claire (Caitriona Balfe) narrates about how humans have always had an endless fascination with circles.

The scene then transitions to North Carolina in 1767 and it has been four months since they arrived in America. The beautiful Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) graces the screen and heads into a holding cell to say farewell to Hayes (James Allenby-Kirk) as he is scheduled to hang. Jamie has a plan where Fergus (César Domboy) will make a scene, but Hayes doesn’t want to see them all hanged. It seems Hayes was with a married woman while drunk, and accidentally killed her husband so now he must pay the price. He requests a spot of liquor, which Jamie offers and another man (who we later learn is Stephen) asks for a swig as well. Hayes also asks that Jamie smiles at him when its time, and he does just that. Lesley (Keith Fleming) is overcome with emotion and causes a ruckus, which allows the sentenced men to scramble and escape.

At a tavern, Jamie tells them they plan to visit his Aunt Jocasta at River Run while Fergus tells them the minister won’t let a convicted felon to be buried, unless they pay significantly for his sins. They plan to bury him that night, and they sing a song in his memory and they are soon joined by the rest of the tavern.

Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) in Outlander 4.01 ‘America The Beautiful’

Burials, Blood, and Bad Memories

They plan to sell a gemstone they salvaged from the wreck to help them make it back to Scotland and they hope to find a buyer at the Lillington’s dinner. Jamie and young Ian (John Bell) dig a grave near the church, but Ian begins to have flashbacks to Geillis (Lotte Verbeek) as the Bakra since the grave reminded him of the blood bath. He tells Jamie what happened with Geillis and how she made him do things. Ian asks Jamie if he’s ever been with someone where he didn’t want to be with them, and he says yes and that “your cock doesn’t have a conscience, but you have.” After comforting Ian further, they go to fetch Hayes from the wagon when a figure rises up, but it turns out to be one of the escapees named Stephen Bonnet (Ed Speleers). They let him go, but Stephen hopes and begs that he can hitch a ride past the soldiers, to which Jamie agrees.

Later on, Claire and Jamie travel on with Stephen in the back and the redcoats inspect the wagon when the commander asks one of his men to stab the corpse in the leg. Thankfully, Stephen doesn’t make a movement or sound, however, it seems the venison caught the brunt of the stab and merely knicked Stephen. Claire tends to his wounds when he notices her wedding bands, and prattles on about his interest in rings and the notion of infinite circles fascinates him. Before heading off, Stephen warns them to watch out for thieves in the woods, while Jamie says they must camp for the night so they don’t make the redcoats suspicious.

Ah, clothes half off and Claire giving Jamie a bit of a wipe down, you just know what’s about to go down. They speak of death, time apart, and how they will always be together, and then things get s-t-e-a-m-y. The next morning, the pair are blissfully happy and Claire tells Jamie of what America will become, while overlooking a forest that is very clearly a green screen and unfortunately ruins the moment slightly.

Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) in Outlander 4.01 ‘America The Beautiful’

Change Ahead

Jamie and Claire get ready for the Lillington’s dinner and Jamie gives Claire a ruby necklace where they used some of their gold coin to create a mount to hold the ruby in. The dinner is clearly very entertaining with talk of taxes and savages, however, Baron Penzler (Rainer Sellien) is intrigued by the necklace. Meanwhile, Jamie is asked if he is the nephew of the widow Cameron of River Run, to which he agrees as Jocasta Cameron is his mother’s sister. Upon hearing that Jamie hopes to return to Scotland, Governor Tryon (Tim Downie) wishes to speak to Jamie privately. Tryon speaks of land grants to those who would work the land and persuade emigrants to come and settle. Jamie isn’t very interested, but Tryon insists he considers the offer.

Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) in Outlander 4.01 ‘America The Beautiful’

On a lighter note, they managed to sell the ruby and it means they can return to Scotland, except Claire is thinking about the offer that was made to Jamie. However, they believe Tryon is worried about the natives and Jamie would be perfect as he is an experienced soldier. Claire reminds him that there will be another war in eight years, a little war by the name of the American Revolution and that the British will lose, and that they will be on the wrong side of history once again. That being said, Jamie hopes he can do some good so Brianna can feel his presence.

Claire and Jamie run into Ian outside, who seems to have found a dog and he is clearly beyond happy. Apparently Ian won him with a lucky roll of the dice, thus the name Rollo, along with some money.

Rollo in Outlander 4.01 ‘America The Beautiful’

Jamie tells the group about him and Claire staying in America, and Ian desperately wants to stay with them. Jamie gives some of the money to Fergus so he and Marsali (Lauren Lyle) can return to Scotland, along with a little extra for Marsali’s mother. Lesley asks to stay with Jamie for a little longer, and Fergus agrees as Marsali won’t do well with a long journey…as she’s with child!

Down River

While on a (green screen) boat to River Run, Claire asks about Jocasta who initially wed John Cameron, then his cousin Hugh, and then Hector and she’s now a widow three times. Claire worries about the African-American steering the boat who goes by the name of Eutroclus (Leon Herbert). According to Captain Freeman (Grant Stott), Troklus used to be his slave until his cabin caught fire one night and he rescued the captain. He petitioned for his release, and now Troklus continues to work for him and be paid. Claire then tries her hand at steering the boat until Jamie gives her a present, which is a new medical chest filled with everything she may need. He apologises that he’s not been able to give her much except a ring and pearls, but Claire is thankful for Brianna and tells him she gave the pearls to her.

Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) in Outlander 4.01 ‘America The Beautiful’

While everyone rests, Rollo begins barking when Stephen enters the cabin and they’re attacked by his band of thieves who take the remaining gemstones. A man attempts to take Claire’s rings, but Lesley stops him until another man slits his throat. Stephen yells at Claire to give her the rings and she tearfully takes them off and shoves them in her mouth. He manages to take out Jamie’s ring however and then departs after the men land a few more punches on Jamie. During this scene, Ray Charles’ rendition of ‘America The Beautiful’ provides the sound…

Overall Thoughts?

Well, it didn’t take long for our characters to find themselves in trouble, and with a death eight minutes into the episode and then later on, that’s definitely not the only ones we’ll be seeing this season. Unfortunately, while the episode is getting us all set up for the new location and characters we have met and are about to meet, it still had its issues.

One that has caused significant discussion among fans is that of ‘America The Beautiful’ playing while a robbery, beating, murder, and assault is occurring. While some found that it played perfectly, I felt it detracted significantly from what could have been a scary and traumatic scene. This is Claire’s first encounter with Stephen as a villain and while we see his ferocity, it would have been even better to hear how threatening and intense the man can be. As well, Outlander rarely uses songs, but when they have, they’ve belonged in the time period we are watching such as in Season 1 when Jan Savitt’s ‘Shuffle Rhythm’ plays while Claire and Frank drive around, to Season 3 when Joe Tex’s ‘Show Me’ plays when Roger arrives at the Randall household. It just didn’t fit, especially since that song wasn’t written until the 1800’s.

Another thing that irked me even more this episode was the visuals. Outlander has had its share of poor green screens (think to Season 2 at the palace), especially for a series that does rather well, but this episode went above and beyond what we’ve seen previously. The scene where they overlook the land was iffy, but then when they travelled down the river? Oh boy. Well, some people can overlook those kind of things and while it might not be possible to get real shots like that, it unfortunately lessens the experience for me.

3.01 ‘The Battle Joined’

The Battle of Culloden has finally come to pass. Jamie fought alongside many clansmen after saying goodbye to Claire as she went back through the stones to her own time. He fought fiercely and faced Black Jack Randall in a long and gruelling fight that left Randall dead and Jamie near-death. After being saved by Rupert, the surviving clansmen are discovered by the British and sentenced to death. Thankfully, Lord Hal Melton pardons Jamie as Melton’s brother, John Grey, offered a debt to Jamie and it has to be honoured. Jamie is then sent back to Lallybroch. Meanwhile, Claire struggled to readjust to being with Frank once more, moving to America, and finding her place in the world. This all changed when a bonnie little lass with red hair entered the world and quickly became Claire’s new purpose.

3.02 ‘Surrender’

Jumping forward six years to 1752, Jamie is a harrowed man living on the outskirts of Lallybroch and wanted by the British again. Young Fergus’s actions of killing a raven with a gun attracts the attention of British soldiers nearby and they storm Lallybroch and hurl questions at Jenny, who just had a baby. After Mary MacNab claims the gun as hers, they leave, but a few linger outside. When young Fergus goes for a walk, he taunts them and it ultimately leads to them chopping off his hand, and Jamie saves him afterwards. At this, Jamie decides to turn himself in so Jenny can collect the reward, and before he does, he sleeps with Mary MacNab.

In 1949 Boston, Claire is having steamy dreams of Jamie and later on leads to Claire sleeping with Frank twice, until he stops because he knows she is thinking of Jamie. This leads to Claire throwing herself into motherhood and also becomes the only female medical student at Harvard where she joins fellow outcast due to his skin, Joe Abernathy.

Three years later, Jamie remains in Ardsmuir Prison along with Murtagh when a new British officer is stationed there and goes by the name, Lord John Grey. The pair don’t seem to remember one another, but Jamie quickly becomes the head of the prisoners and aids Grey when a deranged man speaks of Jacobite treasure. Jamie sneaks off to investigate himself and returns with him revealing he knows who Grey is. Soon, Ardsmuir Prison is closed, but Grey takes Jamie to Helswater to serve Lord Dunsany for the remainder of his sentence.

In 1956 Boston, Claire graduates from medical school and also unfortunately runs into Frank’s girl-on-the-side, which causes an argument to ensue, but they stay together for Brianna. In 1966, Brianna graduates high school, and Frank wants to take her to England as he’s received a position at Cambridge. After a very heated argument, Claire assists with an operation and finds out afterwards that Frank has died in a car crash.

3.04 ‘Of Lost Things’

In 1756, Jamie is at Helwater under the name Alexander MacKenzie when he is introduced to Geneva Dunsany, who is betrothed to the elderly Lord Ellesmere. She becomes intrigued by Jamie and later discovers who Jamie truly is. She then uses this information by blackmailing him into her bed, and months later, she’s pregnant. Geneva dies during childbirth and Jamie winds up killing Ellesmere as he was going to kill the baby since it wasn’t his. The Dunsany family take the child into their care and offer to let Jamie leave, but he asks to stay for a while longer. Skip forward to 1764, Jamie spends a lot of time with Willie and decides he must leave as people are beginning to notice the resemblance.

For Claire in 1968 Scotland, Brianna and Roger aid her by searching for Jamie and they uncover several pieces of information, but the trail goes cold. Before Claire decides they will return to America, Roger and Brianna share a sweet kiss.

3.05 ‘Freedom and Whisky’

It’s now December in 1968 and Brianna returns to college, while Claire tries to focus on returning to work. However, Roger turns up in Boston with news: he discovered an article written by someone named Alexander Malcolm in 1765 including a line Claire use to say ‘freedom and whisky’, but she can’t imagine leaving Brianna. Meanwhile, Joe is examining a set of bones that seem familiar to Claire, and she thinks it’s a 150 year old murder victim. Eventually, Claire comes clean to Brianna about Roger’s news and Brianna wants Claire to go. The three begin preparing for Claire’s return including antique coins, a pocketbook about Scotland, scalpels, penicillin, a necklace, and clothes. We then find Claire in 18th century Edinburgh arriving at A. Malcolm Printer and Bookseller, and upon Jamie seeing Claire, he passes out.

The episode picks up before Claire’s arrival so we can see Jamie in his element as a printer, including printing treasonous pamphlets. After waking up, Jamie is shocked to see Claire really there and they quickly share a passionate kiss. The pair then talk about Brianna, Willie, and Claire’s life in Boston before heading off to meet with Fergus, who is thrilled to see milady once again. We learn Jamie also smuggles alcohol, and get to meet Mr Willoughby. At Jamie’s accommodation (a brothel), the pair get reacquainted with scenes paralleling to their wedding night from the dinner all the way to the multiple rounds in the bed. The next day, Jamie heads out to run errands when Claire is attacked by a man looking for Jamie.

After an altercation with the intruder, he winds up with a serious head injury. The doctor in Claire opts to save him, much to the protests of Jamie. After obtaining some tools and promising to check in on a nearby villager in need of help, Claire does her best but the man dies. Now, they must quickly sell and get rid of the alcohol as well as dispose of a body. Claire attends to Later, young Ian celebrates their day and ends up with a girl at Jamie’s shop, however, he winds up in a brawl with a man and it leads to a blazing fire. Jamie rushes to the rescue, saves Ian, and now they must return to Lallybroch with Jamie facing his other wife.

Claire and Jamie return to Lallybroch and Jenny and Ian aren’t that welcoming, especially with everything young Ian has done while he’s been away. We meet Jenny’s now grown children with children of their own, and Jenny is very suspicious of Claire and her story. Laoghaire barges in and she is Jamie’s other wife with Claire assuming the young girl with her is also Jamie’s. The pair then get into a heated argument, resulting in some hate sex until Jenny dowses them with water. Later on, Claire tries to explain everything to Jenny while Laoghaire brandishes a pistol at Claire to “protect what’s hers” and leads to Jamie getting shot. While administering penicillin, we learn how the marriage came to be and Jamie decides to retrieve the Jacobite treasure so Laoghaire can live a happy life. Young Ian volunteers to retrieve it from the island, but he is captured.

Jamie and Claire are heading to Jamaica to rescue young Ian, along with Fergus and Laoghaire’s other daughter Marsali, who announce they plan on being married and Jamie is against it. Jamie struggles being aboard the ship, but when the wind stops, they have bigger problems to deal with. Motionless for weeks, the water has gone bad, rations are halved, and the crew are seeking revenge on the person who brought bad luck. Thankfully, Mr Willoughby distracts them with his story until the wind picks up. However, a British ship approaches in search of a doctor, which happens to be Claire and it seems they have typhoid fever. Soon, they set sail and now Claire is essentially a captive.

With Claire on another ship, Jamie commands them to sail after her but the captain has him thrown into a cell. Claire puts her doctor hat on and begins tending to the sick and enforcing cleanliness, while Jamie worries about Claire’s welfare and wants Fergus to help him escape. After several death, Claire discovers the carrier as well as learning the man searching Jamie’s print shop before it went up in flames is onboard and that Jamie is wanted for murder. Claire manages to escape by jumping off the ship.

Claire battles the elements and animals on the island until she comes across a house and Father Fogden. It’s a strange household where they talk to a coconut named Coco, which Claire has to pretend to do also so she can leave. Jamie soon turns up as they need to repair the ship and she goes running into his arms. Father Fogden officiates the wedding of Fergus and Marsali, and afterwards they return to the boat where Claire gets drunk off turtle soup resulting in a very steamy scene.

We catch up with young Ian after he’s captured and then taken to the Bakra, which turns out to be Geillis Duncan. She was after the Jacobite treasure and now wants to know about the missing sapphire as it is meant to help with a seer’s prophecy. Claire and Jamie arrive in Jamaica and Claire finds herself in hot water again over the mistreatment and sale of slaves, leading to Claire owning/rescuing a man. They then head to the Governor’s house, and he so happens to be Lord John Grey and they catch up on everything that has happened over the years. Claire runs into Geillis, who then steals the missing sapphire from Grey and the seer has an intense vision. The British captain has come for the wanted Jamie and he is taken prisoner.

Claire arrives at Geillis’ and she’s soon interrogated by her as Geillis wants to restore her country to its former glory. Upon seeing photos of Brianna, Geillis realises Claire’s daughter is the baby that has been prophesied. Meanwhile, Grey helps Jamie be pardoned and he helps rescue Claire from Geillis’ place. The pair learn about the prophecy and race to find Geillis who is in a cave and supposedly another portal like the stones. With Ian as a sacrifice, they stop Geillis in time and Claire decapitates her causing a flashback to her holding the skull. They return to the ship and face treacherous waters and Claire goes overboard with Jamie following behind to rescue her. The pair then wake up on a beach and learn they are in America…

Well Outlander fans, it’s official. Droughtlander has officially begun as ‘Eye of The Storm’ was the Season 3 finale and it was jam-packed with everything that makes Outlander what it is—drama, death, and danger. This final episode really helped to make the season, which to be frank (not that Frank), really needed it as the series has taken such a big turn with the 20 year time jump, change of location, and new characters, but more of that will be discussed in our Outlander Season 3 Review.

Last week’s episode saw Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) arrive in Jamaica with some ghosts from their past making a return. Geillis Duncan (Lotte Verbeek) was revealed to be the Bakra and took advantage of young Ian (John Bell), while Lord John Grey (David Berry) turned out to be the newly appointed Governor of Jamaica. But alas, after learning Geillis was lying about young Ian and Jamie being captured, the pair had some serious work cut out for them.

Liars Everywhere—Some Good, Some Bad

The episode kicks off with an ominous narration from Claire as we see her slowly sinking deeper into the ocean, but we’re not there yet, so we cut to Claire racing around in a carriage. She has arrived at the Geillis’ servants quarters and apparently has had time to change, which Fergus (César Domboy) and Marsali (Lauren Lyle) discover when they find she’s left a note at the inn. The series is really trying to make Fersali resonate with fans, especially when Marsali demands she goes with Fergus who is off to go help Claire and Jamie.

Claire then finds a dead body when she’s searching for Ian, but she’s quickly grabbed and taken to the main house where Geillis is interrogating Ian as she believes Claire knew about the sapphires. She sends Ian away just as Claire comes through the door and Gellis begins her interrogation/conversation with Claire. Asking again why Claire is in this time, Geillis raves on about returning her country to its former glory. Geillis still believes Claire is lying about everything, even about being gone for twenty years, until Claire admits she was pregnant and shows Geillis the photos.

Geillis stares and then realises Brianna (Sophie Skelton) looks familiar and recalls meeting her, as well as hearing voices as she travelled through the stones all those years ago. It then clicks that Brianna is the 200-year-old baby, so Geillis pockets one of the photos and says Claire can stay as long as she wants.

Meanwhile, Captain Leonard (Charlie Hiett) is escorting Jamie to the ship when they are stopped by Grey’s men. At the Governor’s house, Leonard explains the situation, but things quickly go south when Grey asks to see the warrant, which he doesn’t have. Grey continues by belittling Leonard’s status and states that Jamie cannot be taken as he doesn’t have authority on Jamaica. Once again, Jamie finds himself indebted to Grey.

Claire then tries to escape from Geillis’ house but finds all the doors locked and sees young Ian being taken away, but Jamie comes to her rescue and luckily misses the candlestick Claire swung towards him.

Looking In Once Again

Jamie and Claire race towards the drumming in search of Ian and come across a ritual in the very same fashion as Frank and Claire did all the way back in Season 1. However, this time the pair are discovered, but Mr Willoughby (Gary Young) comes to their rescue as he is there with Margaret (Alison Pargeter) and they hope to be together. They speak with Margaret about where Geillis and Ian may be, but Margaret grabs Jamie’s hand and sees him lying on the battlefield of Culloden. But when she grabs both of their hands, she takes on an American accent and appears to be channelling Brianna as she recognises her father and calls Claire “Momma”. Margaret is stopped when her brother, Mr Campbell (Mark Hadfield), takes her away, but Jamie demands answers and they learn about the prophecy.

Claire connects the dots and realises one of the photos of Brianna is missing and that she is the baby in the prophecy, or at least according to Geillis. After Mr Willoughby kills Mr Campbell, Claire and Jamie race to the foreboding Abandawe and enter a cave where Claire can hear the humming. She’s concerned she may never be able to return, but Jamie says she must go as they already lost Faith and they can’t lose Brianna too.

In her 1960s attire, Geillis is peforming a ritual with young Ian tied up just as Geillis’ servant aims a gun to Jamie’s head. A brawl ensues and Claire races towards Geillis who claims Claire owes her a life, and that life is Brianna’s. Claire realises the portal is the pool and as Geillis runs towards it, Claire grabs a machete and decapitates Geillis. Claire begins to become drawn to the pool, but Jamie pulls her back and all three of them leave the cave.

Thankful they escaped, Claire still holds the machete and realises the bones she inspected back in Boston with Joe Abernathy just so happen to be from Geillis, which is why she understood them and had such a strange connection to them. Jamie relieves Claire of the blade and holds the pair of them tight.

Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe), and Ian Murray (John Bell) in Outlander 3.13 ‘The Eye of The Storm’

More Than One Rocky Ride

We return to the Artemis sailing away with a glorious sight of Sam Heughan and like I said already, the season finale had everything that makes Outlander what it is. And yes, they even managed to squeeze in a steamy scene between Jamie and Claire as he talks about what he plans to do with Claire when they reach land, so he gives her a little preview of what’s to come.

They wake up to find the weather has changed significantly, and next thing we know, the Artemis is facing treacherous waters. While many stay below, including Marsali, Fergus and Ian, Claire takes it upon herself to head above deck as she’s still the ship’s surgeon. With men being thrown overboard by the waves, Jamie eventually orders everyone to seek refuge below and makes his way towards Claire who’s having trouble. Unfortunately, the pair spy an incredibly large wave coming towards them and look to each other just before it hits. Jamie recovers, but Claire is nowhere to be seen and then we see the beginning montage of Claire sinking further down into the sea.

Jamie swims towards her, cuts her free and swims to the surface. He then manages to find some debris big enough for the both of them (yes Rose, we’re talking to you), and says he will kill her if she dies. The pair float on as the camera pans out to show they are literally in the eye of the storm right now.

Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) in Outlander 3.13 ‘The Eye of The Storm’

Land Ahoy

A young girl prods Jamie awake with a stick, and he crawls over to Claire and he believes her to be dead until she starts coughing and saying she said she’d never leave him again. A couple approaches them to ask if they are alright and to also inform them that the Artemis washed up with survivors, much to the relief of Jamie and Claire.

Jamie asks where they are while Claire asks what island they are on, only to be told they are in the colony of Georgia, which Jamie is confused by. Claire then clears it up by saying they’re in America and they quickly embrace.

Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) in Outlander 3.13 ‘The Eye of The Storm’

Overall Thoughts?

The episode felt quite full, and it almost seemed like it could have been two episodes with the way it ended after the cave and then cutting to them on the ship. Perhaps one could say it felt a little too full—did we need that scene with Fergus and Marsali? Could that perhaps been swapped with seeing everyone on shore as one big happy family?

Regardless, the series has done very well with bringing Voyager onto the screen, despite many grumblings by fans, but there’s only so much you can have in 13 episodes.

Now, look after yourselves as we enter the Droughtlander as although we don’t know when the series will premiere, we’re hoping for sometime around May as they started filming in October.

And just like that, there’s only one episode left of Outlander Season 3! ‘The Bakra’ saw ghosts from Jamie and Claire’s past turn up as they finally arrived in Jamaica to continue their search for young Ian. Some faces were welcome, while others were not—and this leads to another unhappy ending.

Last week’s episode saw Claire (Caitriona Balfe) traverse through an island after escaping from the British. Luckily, Jamie (Sam Heughan) ended up on the same island after some issues with the Artemis and they almost missed each other. We also saw the marriage of Marsali (Lauren Lyle) and Fergus (César Domboy), along with a hilarious and steamy scene involving turtle soup.

Where In The World Is Young Ian?

We start off with a flashback to when young Ian (John Bell) was captured by the Porteguese after attempting to steal the jewels from Selkie Island. His captors were intentionally seeking the jewels on behalf of the Bakra and upon reaching land, Ian is thrown in a cell where a man named Henry reveals they are in Jamaica. He also reveals there has been others in the cell, but once they go to the Bakra, they never come back.

Young Ian is then taken to a bedroom where a woman emerges from a bath of goats blood when she speaks and it’s the voice of Geillis Duncan (Lotte Verbeek). Geillis was last seen being prepared to be burnt at the stake in Season 1, or her past self was seen speaking with Brianna before she went through the stones.

Ian asks about the other boys, but insists he eats while asking him about the missing sapphire. The tea he’s been drinking compels him to blurt out that he’s uncle may have taken it, followed by him revealing that his uncle happens to be Jamie Fraser.

Apparently Geillis has her way with young virgins as they contain a rare jewel, except Ian reveals he isn’t, but she still invites him to her bed anyway…

We also learn Geillis was the wealthy client who hired Mr Campbell (Mark Hadfield) and his seer sister, Margaret (Alison Pargeter), from Edinburgh. Geillis reveals the jewels were handed down from father to son as they were Dougal’s and that the three sapphires can help a seer with a prophecy.

Claire’s Already Causing Trouble

The Artemis arrives in Jamaica and they hope the Porpoise has not yet arrived so they can slip away. Jamie and Claire are greeted by Kenneth McIver (James McAnerney) who usually works with Jared by importing liquor to Jamaica. He invites them to meet the new Governor who’s having a ball, but they decline and instead learn the Portuguese have been and gone.

Later on, Jamie makes enquiries about if Ian has been sold as a slave and discovers the Governor’s household often buys them from the Portuguese. Meanwhile, Claire becomes more and more appalled by the sight of the slaves in cages, being branded and then sold. She comes across a slave auction where the seller goes to prove the slave’s (Thapelo Sebogodi) virility by showing the crowd his lower extremities and this causes Claire to flip.

She attacks the seller and a brawl ensues with Claire begging Jamie to do something. In the end, Claire is given a piece of paper, which shows Jamie has purchased the slave under Claire’s name to save him and they have named him Temeraire.

Jamie reveals they will go to the Governor’s Ball to see if they can find Ian and that they will bring Temeraire in hopes he can learn something from the other slaves.

Familiar Faces

Jamie, Claire, Fergus, Marsali, and Mr Willoughby (Gary Young) arrive at the ball when Claire runs into Mr Campbell, who she’s surprised to see. While waiting in line to meet the Governor, Claire and Jamie share a very intimate look while some women become very interested in Mr Willoughby.

As they near the head of the line, Jamie is shocked to realise the Governor is Lord John Grey (David Berry)—the man he developed an unusual relationship with and then later took Jamie’s son in. Grey is equally shocked to see Jamie and he’s even more so when he is introduced to Claire. They trio talk and Jamie asks about Willie, who isn’t there at the moment, and they spy Grey wearing the sapphire Jamie gave him. Grey announces his willing to help them find Ian, but not before Claire and him share some uncomfortable exchanges.

Meanwhile, Mr Willoughby and Margaret share a sweet glance and he later goes to find her as he’s concerned how her brother is treating her—could this be a match made in Jamaica? Claire and Jamie go their separate ways to uncover more information, but Claire ends up talking with Grey again. More uncomfortable moments are shared between the two as they recall their first meeting and then Grey being surprised Jamie had told Claire so much about everything. However, Claire makes it very clear she’s back. And for good—a.k.a keep your eyes away from her man.

Another Ghost From The Past

While talking to Grey, Claire sees Geillis walked by and she’s thrown back as “it’s as if I’ve seen a ghost” and she follows her. When Claire finds her, Geillis explains that because she was pregnant, they had to wait until they had the baby before they could execute her. When she delivered a healthy baby boy, Dougal came to fetch him and helped to put a dead woman’s body onto the pyre in place of Geillis. After Culloden, she left Scotland and remarried, except this husband is now dead too. Claire then explains why she’s in Jamaica, and Geillis feigns ignorance, but will help Claire look for him.

Claire takes Geillis to see Jamie who is with Grey, when Geillis sees and grabs his sapphire before leaving in a hurry. She instructs Mr Campbell to do a reading so she can get the jewel and basically forces Grey to do it after he refuses it. Claiming a personal item is needed, she suggests the sapphire and it’s added to Margaret’s hand with the other two.

Margaret begins rattling off some intense words, which mentions that a new ruler will rise and a 200-year-old baby…hmm, 200 years you say?

Captured For The Hundredth Time

Marsali and Fergus steal a few moments together when they see Captain Leonard (Charlie Hiett) has arrived in search of Jamie. They race to find Claire and Jamie to warn them and as they leave, Temeraire reveals he found information from some other slaves that Ian is with Geillis.

Upon their journey home, they drop Temeraire off as there’s a place in the mountains for slaves to seek refuge. But shortly after, they’re surrounded by Captain Leonard and his men and Jamie is taken prisoner. Again.

Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) in Outlander 3.12 ‘The Bakra’

Final Thoughts?

Will Jamie and Claire ever be able to last more than a few weeks together? However, if the title sequence is of any indication, we’re still hopefully in for one steamy scene between the pair before the season is over. Geillis was a welcome sight to help bring some drama back into the series with her wild antics, and it seems she’s kicked it up a notch by bathing in goat’s blood!

An even more welcome sight was David Berry reprising his role as Lord John Grey, and it was utterly sweet to see the reaction between him and Jamie, as well as those amusing moments with Claire not sure how to feel about meeting him.

Since next week is the season finale, it’s going to be packed with action and some intense scenes, if they follow Voyager. However, judging by the sneak peek of next week’s episode, we’re in for a treat—but let’s hope we don’t lose our heads between now and then.

What did you think of this week’s episode? Are you excited for the finale? Sound off in the comments below!

Our Outlander lovers are separated once again, but thankfully it’s not by 200 years. However, this week’s episode sees how far Claire will go in order to save her husband because of all the dangers she faces as she goes.

Last week’s episode saw Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) drift away with the British taking her hostage on-board their typhoid-ridden ship. Jamie tried to convince Fergus (César Domboy) to help him escape, but he wouldn’t because he cared too much for Marsali (Lauren Lyle). Meanwhile, Claire discovers Jamie has been reported and the captain plans to bring him in so Claire jumps off the ship to escape and tell him before it’s too late.

Washed Up

Asleep on the raft, Claire is flipped over by a wave causing her to wash up onshore. Her narration tells us she didn’t end up on Grand Turk Island like they had hoped and now she has no idea where she is. She walks off in search of water and hopes to find a port so she can sail to Jamaica.

On her journey we’re treated to some stunning shots of the land, before Claire tries to make a fire and succeeds. Unfortunately, she wakes to find herself covered in ants, which results in her legs being covered in ant bites. Her unluckiness continues when she stops to sleep again and this time she’s woken to discover a large python sliding across her body. With her legs swollen and wounds festering, she keeps walking when she hears and sees a priest, which is surely to be a hallucination as she passes out, but a dog runs towards her.

Coco For Coco

Claire wakes to find herself restrained to a bed with a lady claiming it’s for her own good so she doesn’t scratch her wounds before giving her a drink. The next time she wakes, there’s a man by the name of Father Fogden (Nick Fletcher) who’s shocked to learn Claire’s a doctor since she’s a woman. She explains her situation and he says it’s about three days travel to Jamaica, just before the man begins to talk to Coco. Now, Coco is a coconut, to which they have a delightful conversation while Claire looks on incredibly confused.

Fogden introduces her to Mamacita (Victoria Leporia), the woman from earlier, who calls Claire a cow and demands she washes since she stinks. However, Claire’s delighted to and enjoys her bath.

Over dinner, she learns Fogden previously lived in Cuba until he fell in love and escaped to this island to be with her. Unfortunately, when they arrived, she became unwell and died.

While it’s a sad tale, Claire wants to go the village tomorrow and Fogden is more than happy to accompany her along with Coco, but not until next week. When Claire starts up over this, he makes it two weeks while Mamacita wants to know why he wants to keep her as nobody can replace her daughter. He later apologises to Claire as Mamacita believes he will forget her daughter. Claire tells him again she must go otherwise she’ll lose her love forever too, and so Fogden says they’ll leave tomorrow morning if Coco agrees.

Reunited. Again.

The next morning with clothes mended, Claire pretends to talk to Coco who says they will travel today, when Fogden walks in. The trio are interrupted when Mamacita screams as she holds the head of their goat as someone killed it. Fogden then proceeds to pour a jarful of beetles onto the head, which are from Abandawe—a place in Jamaica where people go missing and the same place that the crazed lady warned Claire about when she visited her in Edinburgh. Mamacita then reveals it was a Chinese man who did it, and Claire immediately believes it to be Mr Willoughby (Gary Young) and begins running for the beach.

We then cut to Jamie and Fergus on the shores setting up camp as they try to repair a mast, as apparently they faced some troubles where men died, including Captain Raines. With the repairs done, they return to the ship and will leave in the morning, just as Claire makes it to the beach. She then uses the mirror she stole from Father Fogden to create a signal and causes Jamie to look and yell “Sassenach”—our hearts!

The lovers run towards each other on the beach and leap into one another’s arms to be reunited once more. Mr Willoughby stitches Claire’s wound up, while they fill each other in about their adventure from Jamie giving his blessing to Claire jumping off a ship. Jamie believes they could all do with some joy and proposes… a wedding.

Wedding Bells

A wedding is quickly thrown together, but as Jamie specified, Marsali and Fergus would be married by a priest. Luckily there just so happens to be Father Fogden. Mr Willoughby apologises for killing their goat and he agrees to marry the young lovers. Claire helps Marsali get ready and the two have a bonding experience as she doesn’t want to have a baby just yet. She hopes to be like Claire and Jamie as they seem so in love and perhaps Claire isn’t the devil after all.

The wedding begins and Father Fogden is shocked Marsali is marrying a man without a hand, and hopefully he’s not missing another appendage either. After Marsali says I do, Fogden asks for Fergus’ full name, to which he just replies with Fergus. Fogden says he must have a full name when Jamie pipes up by saying his name is Fergus Claudel Fraser—cue the many smiles shared between them all. And just like that, Marsali and Fergus are married.

All The Turtle Soup!

Back on the boat, Claire has a fever so Jamie retrieves her penicillin and offers to help, but she’s the doctor. She somewhat struggles and he then offers again, so he assists her in drawing the penicillin but can’t go through with injecting her so she does it herself. Claire’s immensely enjoying the soup, which is turtle soup made by Mr Willoughby and it contains a lot of alcohol. A drunken Claire informs Jamie it’s an aphrodisiac and so a very heated moment between Claire and Jamie unfurls leaving many fans hot under the collar.

Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) in Outlander 3.11 ‘Uncharted’

Overall Thoughts?

This episode definitely started out slow with the first 15 minutes just Claire making her way through the jungle, and it was quite strange due to Mamacita and Fogden. However, once Claire thankfully reunited with Jamie in a very cheesy beach moment, all was right again. One thing that was a little frustrating was just cutting to Jamie with only a brief mention of the hardships they faced, and it seems like his character has been a little neglected this season. With only two episodes left, these next two episodes are going to be full-on.

Well. With only three episodes left after ‘Heaven and Earth’, Outlander will certainly be sailing at full speed to get to where its book counterpart ends up. Although this was very much a side-quest episode, it was a great insight into some of the Outlander characters.

In last week’s episode, Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) left to bring young Ian (John Bell) back after he was captured. Joined by Fergus (César Domboy) and some unexpected baggage in the form of Marsali (Lauren Lyle), they faced many issues whilst at sea. Worst of them all was when Claire was pressed into service by the British to attend to their men who were diagnosed with typhoid fever by Claire. But that’s not all as the British set sail taking Claire essentially hostage and away from her dear Jamie.

Frasers To The Rescue

Things are well on the Artemis with Jamie awaiting the return of Claire whilst Fergus attempts to please Marsali with a scented bag to freshen her cabin. That is, until the Porpoise starts sailing away. Jamie snaps into leader mode and commands the men to sail after it until Captain Raines (Richard Dillane) has Jamie restrained and put into a cell.

On the Porpoise, Claire is also in leader mode commanding the men to scrub the decks with Elias Pound (Albie Marber) at her side to help her and since Elias is only fourteen, Claire acts motherly towards him. Claire has everyone washing their hands in alcohol, and Elias aids her by telling her about two men who can distil alcohol. Unfortunately, this means the men have to go on half rations of alcohol—the poor bastards.

Meanwhile, Fergus steals some food for Jamie (old habits die hard) who is ill and in a cell once again. He’s concerned for Claire’s welfare being on a ship with 300 men and tears up about the thought of losing her again. With this, Jamie asks Fergus to help him by stealing the keys, but he won’t. This causes Jamie to nastily reply that he is glad he didn’t give his blessing as he can’t understand what it is to love.

You would move heaven and earth. You would risk arrest and death. Even hell. You would do it as easy as a prick of a pin.

Jamie says he will give his blessing if he does this and when Fergus talks to Marsali, she’s concerned if it doesn’t work out as she will then be left alone on a ship. Things become hot and heavy between the two, until Fergus stops as he wants them to be wed properly with Jamie’s blessing.

Marsali (Lauren Lyle) and Fergus (César Domboy) in Outlander 3.10 ‘Heaven and Earth’

More Trouble

The Porpoise holds a mini-funeral for eleven men who have died and as they wrap the bodies for disposal, Elias informs Claire the last stitch must go through their nose to make sure they are dead and it’s always done by a friend. Claire has also found a cause to the illness spreading as one of the men shows no symptoms, but he is a carrier and he is serving the good. The cook isn’t happy about this and threatens Claire on more than one occasion.

Elias gifts Claire a rabbit’s foot to help her luck and cure the men, until she’s needed as someone has fallen ill. Luckily, but also not so, the man has been drinking the distilled alcohol and has given himself alcohol poisoning. Claire cracks it and Elias is both in shock and awe of her swearing, which was one of many cute moments from this character.

It is there she spies a Portuguese flag and races to check Captain Leonard’s (Charlie Hiett) logs to see if it was the same ship that took young Ian. Unfortunately it isn’t, but she discovers the logs records Jamie’s name after a man named Harry Tompkins (Ian Reddington) identified him. The cook then catches her in the captain’s quarters, but she threatens to pretend he violated her if he says anything.

Fergus begins his mission to free Jamie, but overhears the men talking crudely about Marsali and returns to Jamie saying he can’t do it in case they fail, which would see Marsali alone and unsafe.

Later on, Jamie gazes at the photographs of Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and Claire when Captain Raines and Marsali walk in. Raines is there as they need all hands on deck to navigate the waters, whilst Marsali is there (willingly) to persuade him. He reluctantly agrees and upon his release, Jamie gives Fergus and Marsali his blessing and says they will be wed in Jamaica with a priest.

Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) in Outlander 3.10 ‘Heaven and Earth’

Threats and Death

Claire pretends Harry Tompkins may be a second carrier and uses the men to have him brought to her. It turns out Tompkins is the man who was searching Jamie’s print-shop and ultimately helped cause the inferno. With Claire threatening him with one of her knives, he reveals they found the man in the crème de menthe, which means Jamie can also be charged with murder.

It looks as though Claire seriously considered killing him, but instead has him locked up near the person who is carrying typhoid in hopes he catches it too.

The men appear to be recovering well with the ship quiet from moans and singing replacing it. Claire enjoys this merriment until she finds a sleeping Elias covered in a rash. Calling out for his death mother, Claire pretends to be her and comforts him in his final moments. She returns the rabbit’s foot and completes the final stitch in his body bag before he cast into the sea.

Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) in Outlander 3.10 ‘Heaven and Earth’

Walking The Plank

It seems the Porpoise is coming close to an island, which means they can collect fresh water and feed the goats as they need grass—as stated many times by the lady looking after the goats. Claire then realises what the woman was trying to say and that it’s essentially a time for Claire to escape.

Claire begins running and it seems she is free, until she runs into Captain Leonard on a patrol. She claims innocence that she didn’t realise she was running towards the port, but he doesn’t buy it and has her escorted to the ship.

However, goat lady is determined to help Claire and proposes another escape plan—jump off the ship. Claire considers it for a second, before saying no. The lady persists she can reach the shore with the aid of some buoys. After receiving some money from the lady and the removal of Claire’s clothes, she speaks her special cuss and leaps into the churning ocean below.

Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) in Outlander 3.10 ‘Heaven and Earth’

Overall Thoughts?

Outlander has definitely found its rhythm once again, which was much-needed especially with the Season 3 finale drawing closer and closer. While this episode was essentially a filler, it was nice to see more moments between Marsali and Fergus as their relationship was not only thrown onto Claire and Jamie, but also the viewers. Many were shocked by the pairing, but as we get to see more sweet moments between them, it seems as though they do really care for one another.

The scene stealer for this episode would definitely have to be Albie Marber as Elias Pound. Although he was briefly in the final few minutes of last week’s episode, I really found myself drawn to him because of Claire’s closeness and maternal instinct towards him. One thing I haven’t done in a while is shed a few tears in an Outlander episode, and I certainly found my eyes welling up with his death.

P.S—Sam Heughan, you wear those glasses. You wear those glasses well.

Outlander is now setting sail for a new destination, which was apparent from the get-go with an updated title sequence and intro song. Plus we all know that with a new location there will be plenty of new faces and action for our favourite couple.

Last week’s episode saw Jamie (Sam Heughan), Claire (Caitriona Balfe), and young Ian (John Bell) return to Lallybroch where Claire finally discovered Jamie’s big secret—he remarried and his wife so happens to be Laoghaire (Nell Hudson). This causes much drama for the pair, especially when Claire assumes Joan to be his daughter. There’s also the added drama with Jenny (Laura Donnelly) who is quite unwelcoming to Claire, Jamie being shot by Laoghaire, and then Ned Gowan (Bill Patterson) returning to instruct that Jamie’s second marriage is void. This left Laoghaire wanting compensation from Jamie, which would come from retrieving the jewels from Selkie Island where young Ian swam across to, but only to be taken aboard an unknown ship.

Setting Sail

Jamie’s cousin Jared Fraser (Robert Cavanah) returns to loan his ship named Artemis so they can go after young Ian, who appears to be heading to Jamaica. Jamie then enquires if Mr Willoughby (Gary Young) and Fergus (César Domboy) have arrived, to which the crew replies that Willoughby has, but Fergus is bringing some “baggage” with him. Jamie believes Ian’s capture is punishment for wanting too much, and says he’ll take Claire back to the stones if she desires, except Claire will go after Ian first. As for Jenny and Ian, they believe the pair are heading to France, and Jamie will send a letter explaining the situation.

After setting sail, Claire wonders why she’s being ignored, and as it turns out, women and redheads are bad luck on a ship according to their superstitions so thus the horseshoe for everyone to touch—but personally, that pair are just bad luck in general.

Fergus appears and with him is Laoghaire’s other daughter, Marsali (Lauren Lyle). The two have been handfast and Jamie is not happy about this news, although they have been apparently courting for a while. Jamie only wants to know if he’s bedded her and since he hasn’t, it’s not binding so Marsali will be sent home. This doesn’t sit well with Marsali so she blackmails Jamie by saying she’ll say she’s been bedded so either she’s ruined or she can remained married. Naturally Jamie isn’t happy with this, so he decides Fergus will sleep in his room with Claire and Marsali together… Great idea Jamie!

A Rocky Start

Jamie is already feeling unwell so Claire gives him ginger tea and discovers Jamie held onto some of Claire’s clothes from their time in Paris. Claire then dines with Captain Raines (Richard Dillane) and says both Marsali and herself should be bare-breasted to counteract the bad luck they bring with them.

Later on, Jamie and Fergus talk, who assumed Jamie would be happy by the marriage, but Jamie says Fergus must be honest about everything, including the women he’s already slept with. Marsali later confronts Jamie as she knows all about Fergus, and Claire says she should “give them a chance” because it may help it to fizzle out, except Jamie will not allow it still.

Jamie remains sick and Willoughby enquires as to how long Jamie will keep going because if he does, they’ll have to remove certain parts from Jamie’s nether-regions—and there’s no way he wants to lose the family jewels! Claire continues to tend to wounds and produce medicine, just like her days at Castle Leoch and she soon walks in on Willoughby treating Jamie with acupuncture. A sheepish Jamie was embarrassed to admit he was seeking treatment elsewhere, when he realises they’re not moving as the wind has stopped—which is most likely because of the bad luck on the ship.

Claire and Jamie steal sweet moments together, such as when they look out onto the ocean and towards the moon speaking of Brianna (Sophie Skelton) who Claire is missing.

Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) in Outlander 3.09 ‘The Doldrums’

Stuck In The Middle of Nowhere

The ship has remained motionless for weeks and their water has gone bad with the crew being reduced to half rations. The superstitious crew suggests to throw the person who has brought bad luck to the ship overboard, but Jamie won’t allow it. However, the man who didn’t touch the horse shoe gets drunk and climbs the mast with Jamie racing after him. He convinces the man to not jump, and the crew soon turn Jamie into the “Jonah” by threatening and chanting for him to jump.

Luckily, the odd Mr. Willoughby spies a bird flying low and begins ringing the bell to gain the attention of everyone when he begins to tell his life story. He speaks of being asked to join the household of the Emperor’s Second Wife, but all servants of the wives must be eunuchs. Unfortunately for Willoughby, he did not want to lose his manhood as he had fallen in love with womankind. His reasoning behind this was quite amusing too, e.g. “the warmth of a mound that fills your hand like a ripe peach”.

So he fled the country to Scotland where women now will not consider him and in a dramatic move, he flings his written story into the air. The papers are swept up by a gust of wind and this is greeted by the sounds of joy from the crew. Willoughby later reveals he knew the wind was coming because the bird flew low signalling that it would soon rain.

Mr Willoughby (Gary Young) in Outlander 3.09 ‘The Doldrums’

Prisoner To The British

As the rain belts down, Claire and Jamie find a spare few moments to be alone and afterwards, Jamie continues to be the gentleman most women desire by saying he likes Claire’s grey hairs showing through.

Alas, that’s all the time they get when a British ship sails towards them and signals that they will board the Artemis, which is concerning as they can press men into service. It turns out that they require a surgeon due to an outbreak, and that so happens to be Claire. She agrees to help, although Jamie doesn’t want her to so she explains to him it sounds like typhoid fever and since she’s from the future, she can’t catch it.

She boards the ship and inspects the sick, and says she will stay for a little while much to the delight of Captain Leonard (Charlie Hiett) to help contain the outbreak, despite most of those who have it will die. She begins preparations only to discover the boat is moving and they are setting sail for shore and taking Claire against her will.

Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) in Outlander 3.09 ‘The Doldrums’

Overall Thoughts?

After last week, Outlander finally feels like Outlander once again, and it seemed to keep up this episode. Although the majority of it was all in one place, there was still quite a bit of action to watch. One thing about Outlander is that although it’s a drama filled with romance and action, it always has more profound moments mixed in with a little comedic relief to help balance it out. Mr Willoughby definitely provided some much-needed chuckles this episode, and it seems poor Claire and Jamie will never be left alone for more than a few minutes.

As for Marsali and Fergus, I do wish we could see more of that relationship and perhaps that could have been slightly alluded to at Lallybroch by Marsali enquiring about him. Also, we lost a chunk of what happened with Willoughby and Fergus after the print-shop burned down—did Fergus ever stop that man? Or shall we just forget about that minor plot and let it drift off into the ocean?

With only four episodes left for this season, we have quite a bit of Voyager to pack in and thank goodness that there are no mini breaks between now and the Season 3 finale!

It’s hard to believe we now only have five episodes left of Outlander Season 3, and the series now feels as though its found its rhythm once again and promises plenty of action in the remaining episodes.

Last week’s episode saw the third wheel in Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) relationship began to rear its head again: trouble. The pair found themselves with a dead man on their hands along with Jamie’s smuggling causing them grief. Unfortunately this wasn’t the only criminal issue of Jamie’s that was brought into the light after young Ian (John Bell) had a run in with a man who discovered Jamie’s treasonous papers. A fight began and led to the printshop burning down.

Return To Lallybroch

Claire, Jamie, and young Ian return to Lallybroch only to be greeted by a not-so happy Jenny (Laura Donnelly) and Ian (Steven Cree). Things only get worse when young Ian lets it slip about selling liquor, fires, and Claire killing people. Ian says Jamie can be the one to punish young Ian, but naturally Jamie finds another way to punish him: chores.

We meet Janet (Cora Tsang), one of the many Murray children, and learn that Maggie, who Claire helped deliver in Season 1, now has two children of her own. Wee Jamie (Conor McCarry) is now fully grown with many children of his own, but he isn’t all that welcoming towards Claire.

Meanwhile, Jamie tells Jenny to give young Ian more freedom and the pair talk about this mysterious wife of Jamie’s. He gives into his sister’s questions and tells her a story of preparing for Culloden and arranging for Claire to hide in a village, but he learned that everyone was slaughtered and assumed Claire was too. Jenny is suspicious as her and Ian searched for them and believes Claire would have never have stopped looking for him, so there must be more to the story.

Jenny Murray (Laura Donnelly) in Outlander 3.08 ‘First Wife’

Jamie speaks to Claire of building a cottage, although Claire wants to Jenny the truth, to which he is against. Jamie tells her of the time he went searching for her when he escaped from Ardsmuir prison. We flashback to Jamie crossing the freezing waters to an island where she supposedly waited. Unfortunately, she was not there, but he did find the MacKenzie crest etched into the stone marking the hiding place of a treasure chest. Just as the two are about to share a moment, Jamie decides its time to Claire the truth, but he’s interrupted by a red-headed girl racing in and calling him “daddy”.

The Other Wife

Next thing we see is Laoghaire (Nell Hudson)—remember the girl who placed an ill-wish on Claire, tried to have Claire killed as a witch, and longed to call Jamie hers?—well she starts calling Claire a “sassenach witch”. Claire is overwhelmed and gradually puts it together, and Laoghaire makes sure she does by telling her that she is Jamie’s wife. Leaving Claire on her own, Jamie takes them outside and speaks to little Joan about Claire being his first wife and that he will always look at for her and Marsali (Lauren Lyle).

He returns to find Claire grabbing her belongings and Claire assumes Joan is his, but Jamie denies this as he’s not the only red-headed Scot around. He explains Laoghaire was a widow with two children and they had been married for two years, but lived apart. Claire’s furious with Jamie for not telling her, and he says he was a coward because he feared losing her. The pair begin to say some unkind things to one another, especially when Jamie blames Claire for leaving him.

Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) in Outlander 3.08 ‘First Wife’

Claire won’t have it and says she would have gladly died with him, to which Jamie asks her if she knows what it’s like to live 20 years without your heart… He tells her of seeing Claire and Frank together, and Frank with his child. All fired up, he roughly kisses her resulting in a slap and a very heated moment begins, but it’s quickly put out by Jenny throwing a bucket of water on them for “fightin’ and ruttin’ like wild beasts”.

Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) in Outlander 3.08 ‘First Wife’

A Woman Scorned

Janet apologises to Claire as she was the one who told Laoghaire, but it was Jenny who told Janet to do it. Jenny and Claire have it at and Jenny blames Claire for Jamie’s latest trouble as it always follows her. Claire tries to explain herself by telling Jenny about being married in America and it was a matter of survival, and although Jenny can see some truth, she knows there’s still something and things will never be the same for them.

Claire goes to leave and Jamie stops her to apologise, but they are interrupted by Laoghaire who is brandishing a pistol in attempt to “protect what is hers”. During her yelling, she accidentally fires the pistol causing Jamie to get hit and both his wives run to him, but Claire roughly pushes Laoghaire away.

Laoghaire (Nell Hudson) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) in Outlander 3.08 ‘First Wife’

Claire puts her doctor hat on and prepares to remove the shrapnel from Jamie with young Ian remarking about her very fine tools—that’s the 20th century for you! As Jamie recovers, she wants to know more about Laoghaire and we flashbacks to Jamie returning from Helwater. It’s at an event at Lallybroch where looks on whilst everyone enjoys himself, until he is brought into the fold by two girls and becomes joyous himself. He later discovers them to be Laoghaire’s children and Jenny took notice of his enjoyment and helped to match them. Claire realises Jamie now has a temperature and gives him some penicillin she brought with her, and the redhead not scared to go into battle, but he’s beyond scared of a needle!

Trouble, Again

Ned Gowan (Bill Patterson) makes his return since Season 1, and it was beyond exciting to see him again. He declares Jamie’s marriage to Laoghaire to be invalid, but Jamie does not wish for any harm to come to her and the children. Instead of handing over the pistol and what would lead to her being sent to the colonies, Laoghaire is happy to settle on a sizeable sum.

The only way to get this money is for Jamie to retrieve the treasure, but due to his injury, he can’t so young Ian volunteers himself. Jenny initially says no, but her and Ian eventually agree to it.

Jamie and Claire watch on from the cliff as young Ian swims through the waters and Claire is worried they’ve made a mistake and if they belong together anymore. Their reconciliation is interrupted when Claire spots a ship with a boat rowing to shore. The occupants see young Ian and grab him to take him with them.

Overall Thoughts?

Last week’s episode definitely felt like Outlander once again with trouble following the pair and that definitely helped with the pacing issues Season 3 has been facing. This episode, however, felt much more like Season 1 with Lallybroch, Laoghaire, and the arguments Claire and Jamie had. Their heated argument was very reminiscent of Season 1, Episode 9 ‘The Reckoning’ after Jamie retrieves Claire from Wentworth Prison and the whole “sadist” confrontation. Despite their 20 years apart, these scenes felt most like how we knew the characters, so that was nice to see and hopefully this will continue over the course of the season, but in a more civilized manner.
