June is Pride Month and we are here to discuss all our favourite ships from TV shows! As we are discussing couples, here is a spoiler warning if you haven’t watched or are halfway through any of the following One Day At A Time, Greys Anatomy, Shadowhunters, Elite, Glee, The 100, Modern Family, The Bold Type, Schitts Creek and, Atypical beware!

Elena and Syd (One Day At A Time)

Elena and Syd are both awkward and are trying to figure everything out together. They treat each other with respect and are best friends. Both of them are nerdy, activists, and all around amazing people, this pairing is one we hope lasts till the end of time.

Callie and Arizona (Grey’s Anatomy)

These two have had their fair share of obstacles and they have supported each other through many of their worst times. We see these two fall in and out of love on multiple occasions, but there is no denying that these two are one of the sweetest couples on Grey’s Anatomy.

Magnus and Alec (Shadowhunters)

Magnus and Alec had everybody swooning and crying, these two defied the odds and made their relationship work even when the entire Shadowhunter world was stacked against them. Both Alec and Magnus are such kind people and always try to understand and accept each other.

Ander and Omar (Elite)

Elite is filled with drama and relationships falling apart, but these two are one that everybody is rooting for. Ander and Omar are both trying to come to terms with their sexuality and they have a lot of death surrounding them too. These two have a passionate relationship that everybody hopes will work out in the end.

Kurt and Blaine (Glee)

Kurt and Blaine gave us so many beautiful duets and such swoon worthy moments. They were so sweet and one of the most iconic couples on Glee.

Clarke and Lexa (The 100)

These two were such a surprising pair that none of us knew we needed! They came from completely different sides, but they understood each other and we really needed more for the two.

Mitch and Cam (Modern Family)

Mitch and Cam may be polar opposites, but these two are perfect for each other. They are the best parents and always manage to make us laugh. Also they gave us the iconic “The Lion King” scene so what is not to love?

Kat and Adena (The Bold Type)

These two are badass women on their own and make one powerful couple. They have had their fair share of ups and downs, but these two have a healthy relationship and communicate very well.

Patrick and David (Schitts Creek)

These two are the sweetest and most pure couple. They make each other laugh, are patient and open, and are all around adorable! They even make working together look cute!

Casey and Izzie (Atypical)

These two went from enemies, to best friends to something more. They are both still trying to figure out what their relationship means but we can’t wait to see more of these two in the next season of Atypical.

Because there are so many amazing LGBTQ+ couples, here are some honourable mentions; Emily and Maya from Pretty Little Liars, Daryl and Josh from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Corey and Mason from Teen Wolf, Ola and Lily from Sex Education, Noah and Shane from Faking It, and Santanna and Britney from Glee. Of course there are so many more couples and these are just based on what I have watched!

Sex Education is a British Netflix show that everyone has been screaming about. If you are one of the many people who have recently binge watched the second season that dropped earlier this year and are looking for something new to watch, then here is a list of seven shows that might be a good fit for you!

1. Euphoria

This show stars Zendaya and it’s filled with so many other fantastic actors such as Jacob Elordie (The Kissing Booth), Eric Dane (Greys Anatomy), and Sydney Sweeney (The Handmaid’s Tale). Euphoria follows Rue (Zendaya), who has just returned from rehab and how she and her classmates are dealing with all the challenges of being a teenager. This show is a lot darker and more graphic (R18+ content) than Sex Education, but it discusses very relevant issues, has a diverse cast, great female friendships, a wide variety of relationships, and will have you crying just like Sex Education.

2. Looking For Alaska

This show stars Kristine Froseth (The Society), Ron Cephas Jones (This Is Us), Timothy Simons (Veep), and a wide range of new young actors. This TV show is based on John Green’s book and has done a beautiful job of bringing these characters onto the screen. It is set at a boarding school in the woods, Miles is new but finds a loyal group of friends very quickly. Alaska, who is the love interest of Miles, is very similar to Maeve in Sex Education as they both have a very dark outlook on life and are feminists. This TV show has some great friendships and is set in the 90s, so it has a similar throwback vibe like Sex Education.

3. One Day At A Time

One Day At A Time stars Justina Machado (Jane the Virgin), Rita Moreno, Isabella Gomez (A Cinderella Story: Christmas), and so many other incredible people. This show is all about a Cuban-American family and it tackles a large amount of current issues, while also being incredibly funny. If you’re wanting something a bit more humorous or lighthearted, this is a great binge.

4. The End of The F***ing World

Jessica Barden (Hanna) and Alex Lawther (Black Mirror) star as the two leads in this show. This is british so you will get to hear the british accent again. Alyssa (Barden) and James (Lawther), who are both outsiders set off on a road trip but find a lot of obstacles along the way. This show is very dark but it feels similar to Sex Education as it once again explores what it means to be a teen as well as showing a relationship in a new light.

5. The Bold Type

The Bold Type stars Katie Stevens (Faking It), Aisha Dee (Chasing Life) and Meghann Fahy (Next to Normal on Broadway) as three badass women working for a magazine. This show is all about girl power and starting the conversation about things such as sexual assault, sexual orientation, breast cancer and more. It is great for people who loved Sex Education as it combines tackling important issues with homour and romance.

6. Glee

Glee is a little older than the rest of the shows on this list but it started talking about significant and relevant teen issues well before its time. It stars Lea Michele (Scream Queens), Jane Lynch (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) and so many other incredible people you will know from Broadway musicals and movies. This show is all about a high school Glee club and how they are at the bottom of the food chain. There is a lot of singing on this show, so if that isn’t your cup of tea you might want to skip this one. But it talks about teen pregnancy, homophobia, racism and so much more.

7. Fleabag

Fleabag has won countless awards and has a star studded cast. It stars people such as Phoebe Waller-Bridge (writer of Fleabag and Killing Eve), Olivia Colman (Broadchurch), Andrew Scott (Sherlock) and Brett Gelmann (Stranger Things). This show is about Fleabag and how she is dealing with life. This show is wacky, heartbreaking, funny and so incredibly british.

Hopefully one of the 7 shows listed will become a nice and easy binge. All 7 of the shows contain some sort of element found in Sex Education. So get to it, make a cup of tea and curl up!

Article contributed by Hannah French The most recent adaptation of Little Women was a masterpiece and took the world by storm.
The most recent adaptation of Little Women was a masterpiece and took the world by storm. It was filled with feminist messages, heartwarming sister relationships, and romance to make you swoon. The cast had Saiorse Ronan (The Lovely Bones), Emma Watson (Harry Potter), Florence Pugh (Midsommar), Eliza Scanlen (Sharp Objects), Timothée Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name), Laura Dern (Big Little Lies,) and Meryl Streep (Mamma Mia). But what should you pick up to read or watch next? Well I have broken down the movie into sections with some recommendations for you all!

If you loved the feminism in Little Women a.k.a the scene where Jo talks to her mum about how women are more than just their looks or when Amy tells Laurie what it means to be a woman in the 1800s. I would recommend you watch the Netflix original series, Anne with an E.

Anne with an E is about Anne Shirley, an orphan girl who comes to live with an elderly brother and sister in Avonlea, Prince Edward Island. Anne has a big imagination and an even bigger heart. This show is beautifully shot, has incredible characters, and so many feminist moments. The most feminist-centred episode would have to be Season 3, Episode 7, so if you’re just going to watch one episode, watch that one. Anne is very similar to Jo and it is also set in the past (1907), so this a perfect watch if you loved Little Women. This TV show is based on the books Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery, but the TV show did something very similar to Greta Gerwig’s adaptation and has taken a more modern twist and opened a discussion about relevant issues today.

Things A Bright Girl Can Do by Sally Nicholls is also a great read if you want to read something with a feminist undertone. This book is set in the early 1900s during the suffragette movement in England. Things A Bright Girl Can Do is filled with badass women and is so insightful to a movement we often forget about.

If you loved the time period of when Little Women is set I would recommend either watching or reading Little House on the Prairie. This story takes place in Minnesota in the 1870s-90s. The costumes in the show are great (not quite as extravagant as in Little Women), it shows how people survived and how hard people had to work. This is based on the real life of Laura Ingalls-Wilder and her family settling into Walnut Grove. Laura is feisty, brave, and a little reckless. This show/book is filled with heartwarming family moments and a great insight into what it was like to live in this time period.

If you loved the romance in Little Women I would recommend watching Poldark. This show is set in Cornwall, England in the late 1700s and early 1800s. It has a strong female lead and a romance that will have you swooning, the accents are also amazing. If you’ve watched The Hobbit, Aiden Turner is the dashing love interest in this.

Family plays a very important role in Little Women and if you adored that aspect of this movie you should definitely go and check out One Day At A Time. Although this show is set in present day America, it has a great family dynamic and discusses so many important issues.

Little Women is all about the March sisters and if you loved any scene with all four sisters together you should pick up The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall. This book might just be the modern Little Women and it follows four sisters on summer holiday in Massachusetts. This book is targeted at younger readers but can be read at any age.

Greta Gerwig is one talented director, if you adore this woman (who doesn’t?) you should check out her other very successful film Lady Bird. You may see some familiar faces in this film as well (Saiorse and Timothée just seem to have the best chemistry). This film is about a teen girl in her senior year of high school and how she navigates her relationship with her mum, friends and boys

In case you’ve already watched/read all of these you can always just rewatch the movie, that never hurts.

I don’t know about you but whenever an underrated show I love is renewed for another season, I get a little bit nervous. And if that second season is as good as the first, and the show is granted a third season, I am turned into a ball of anxiety, unsure of how to handle this news. Naturally of course you want more content with your favourite characters, but on the other hand, you are scared that everything will be burned down into unidentifiable shreds and make you hate everything about the series.

And I am here to tell you that when it comes to One Day at a Time, you have nothing to worry about. Season Three might just be the best one yet.

Disclaimer: There are mild spoilers for season 3 in this article – no specifics, but certain occurring topics will be addressed. If you do not want to be spoiled, go watch the show first before coming back!

For those of you new to the series, here is a quick overview: One Day at a Time follows a Cuban middle-class family living in Los Angeles as they try to figure out their lives. Lydia fled from Cuba to escape Castro as a young teen to make a new life for herself and her husband in America. Her daughter and the woman we follow in the show Penelope, is a veteran dealing with PTSD and anxiety. Penelope’s son Alex is in the prime of puberty and making his way through some problematic experiences. Her daughter Elena is a gay human-rights activist who recently came out as gay. Add into the mix a Canadian landlord who sees himself as part of the family and you have the cast of One Day at a Time (in other words, this show has some mad representation, y’all, and you need to watch it).

While One Day at a Time is known on the internet for broaching heavy subject matter in an approachable way, I’d argue that season three shines the brightest when it comes to exploring tough topics. In just thirteen 30-minute episodes, this show manages to go to the bottom of such current topics as toxic masculinity, anxiety, consent, addiction and society’s heteronormative ideals.

The season starts off with a bang – or a funeral, in this case. With ample guest starring (Melissa Fumero and Stephanie Beatriz from Brooklyn 99 are both attending the funeral), this episode kicks of a new season that is centered on family above all.

As Penelope’s children grow up and encounter more trials, the show turns toward educating the new generation about topics that (as Lydia makes clear from her position as an immigrant and part of a generation before the internet existed) were of no concern a few decades earlier and have now become major points of discussion for everyone.

Not to sound like a complete cliché, but in this day and age, it is difficult to get to the bottom of certain issues. It is even harder to form an opinion of your own when you are constantly faced with other more dominant ones online. Phrases like “No means no and yes means yes” are plastered everywhere on social media (as they should), but as One Day at a Time shows, there is so much more to that than one simply catchphrase. Because a yes can mean no when you are led to believe that saying no would put you in unspeakable danger. A yes can mean no when you are offering it up in a shaky voice while trying not to cry. A yes can mean no when you are being followed by a strange group of men on your way home and think it’s easier to just give them your number to appease them than try to outrun them.

One Day at a Time doesn’t shy away from speaking the truth – many of the conflicts around consent and toxic masculinity have been blown out of proportion by the internet and sometimes turned into a bloody fight with no winners, but that does not diminish the valid arguments made in those discussions. As the characters in the show recount their own dangerous encounters in their past, the viewer learns that saying one thing and doing the other is not okay. That to do something juvenile and potentially frightening just to make your friends laugh is not okay. That respecting your partner no matter their gender should always be a priority. And that asking for consent can be the hottest thing you do.

As Penelope teaches her children valuable lessons just like she does in the last two seasons, she learns more about herself and her impending future as well, which brings me to another incredible theme explored in this season: the pursuit of happiness, and what that means. For Penelope’s Cuban mother, happiness means being happily married. For Elena, it means burning down the patriarchy. For Alex, it’s probably getting that pair of Yeezy’s and being the most handsome grandson in the world – and fitting in. But Penelope is struggling to conform to heteronormative ideals that make her think her happiness depends on her relationship status. It’s ingenious, really. Tiny Easter eggs are laid throughout the season about someone being the other’s “better half”, about finding that someone you feel “the spark” with. Ultimately, the final episode addresses Penelope’s idea of happiness as she watches her ex-husband getting married to a carbon copy of her. And not to spoil anything, but the resolution is as heartwarming as it is encouraging.

And these are just two examples of the kind of relevant issues that are brilliantly explored in this masterpiece of a show.

One Day at a Time has always excelled at pairing impeccable comedic timing with gut-punching heart-to-hearts. Within the span of just thirty minutes, you can cry along as someone experiences a terrifying panic attack, and laugh as Alex tries to pick up girls at the DMV who failed their driver’s tests. I sometimes find myself nostalgic for the sitcoms of the 90s, filled with their puns and situational humour. But I think One Day at a Time is one of these shows that will live on for as long as Friends and Full House have stuck around because their heart is in the right place. It’s a show that makes you laugh, but also think about your role in this fast-changing society. At its core, this is a show about family and the bonds that won’t break and it’s one that will hopefully run for many more beyond this excellent third season.

10/10 for Season 3

Season 1-3 of One Day at a Time are now available to stream on Netflix.
