About The Black Market: Author-artist Jed Alexander’s debut novel is filled with scares, determined, relatable kids, and uncanny pranks; accompanied by Alexander’s classic-style, atmospheric illustrations.

As a writer for middle grade fantasy, I have my favorites, both classic and contemporary, And it doesn’t get more classic than Daniel Pinkwater. Some might say, “the 80s? That’s not classic. Where’s the Roald Dahl? The Lewis Carroll?” Well, there’s classics, and there’s classics, and Pinkwater, as far as I’m concerned, deserves to be an institution. 

Alan Mendelsohn, Boy From Mars by Daniel Pinkwater

The fact that Alan Mendelsohn is from Mars is the least interesting thing about him and is incidental to the events of what we shall loosely call a plot.  Leonard Neeble and his friend Alan meet the con man Samuel Klugarsh who gives them a gadget that puts them into state 26, allowing them to control minds. Sort of. At first all they’re able to do is make people rub their bellies and take of their hats.  But it’s not about mind control, or going into that other plane of existence known as  Waka Waka. With Pinkwater it’s more about the journey than the destination. And what a journey! But even better than Alan Mendelsohn is:

The Snarkout Boys and the Avocado of Death by Daniel Pinkwater

Walter’s friend Winston Bongo is the inventor of “snarking out,” or sneaking out at night to go to The Snark Theater to watch unusual, rare, and classic movies. On a solo Snark, Walter meets Rat, a punk rock girl with an eccentric family. Walter, Winston and Rat are on the search for Rat’s recently missing relative, but really, summarizing Pinkwater’s books is impossible so I won’t even try.

This one has genuine moments of real magic that outmagics anything in a Harry Potter book. There’s one particularly evocative scene with a performing chicken that is both absurd and beautiful. And no one describes food better than Pinkwater; baked potatoes, pastries, bowls of Bermuda Triangle chili. Everything about these books is delicious.

 His books typically have no grand themes or morals, and often it feels like he’s making it up as he goes along, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. The sequel, The Snarkout Boys and the Baconburg Horror isn’t nearly as good, but still worth a look. Or really, you can’t go wrong with any Pinkwater book. He has written, and sometimes illustrated, everything from picture books to middle grade to YA, and one book for adults called The Afterlife Diet. He has such a distinct voice, you can recognize it a mile off, just for the way he describes doughnuts.

Skullduggery Pleasant By Derek Landry

This series is more in the realm of contemporary fantasy, with lots of Irish wit. It’s about Skullduggery Pleasant, a skeleton sorcerer detective, and his protégé, twelve year old Stephanie Edgeley AKA Valkyrie Cain. Lot of action, adventure, and the occasional horrible pun. There are over 18 books in the series, but I’m afraid to say I’ve only read the first three, which I adored. The first book came out in 2007.

Neal Shusterman’s Skinjacker Trilogy

This one is also from the mid 2000s. The tone of Shusterman’s books is more on the dark and serious side. The series begins with Everlost, which is also the name of the limbo between heaven and earth where the book takes place. The recently deceased kids in the story can’t be seen by the living world, but some of them have learned to “skinjack” or inhabit the bodies of the living.  

Shusterman at his best writes real horror, and The Skinjacker series is as horrific as middle grade fiction gets. Not Goosebumps jump scare horror, but real existential, what happens when we die, dread. The other books in the series are Everwild and Everfound. Five stars!

Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians by Brandon Sanderson

Another 2007 release. I’ve only read the first of the series, but I can’t wait to read the sequels. Alcatraz Smedry’s clumsiness and general tendency to destroy things is both the bane of his existence and his superpower. He has bounced from foster home to foster home because of it. On his 13^th birthday he meets his biological grandfather for the first time.  His grandfather informs him that he is part of a great legacy of Smedrys who each have a strange inborn talent that at first seems like a nuisance, but turns out to be their secret weapon, like his cousin Sing Sing who has the ability to trip and fall at just the right moments. And part of that legacy is their ongoing battle with a conspiracy of Evil Librarians who secretly rule the world.  What more is there to say?

Your Pal Fred, A Graphic Novel by Michael Rex

The most recent of the bunch, Your Pal Fred came out in 2022. Fred is a relentlessly friendly boy robot from a more enlightened time, who is revived by scavengers to find himself in a future post apocalyptic hellscape. In contrast to the cynical world he finds himself in, Fred believes in friendship, kindness, and fairness, and brings a beam of sunshine to everyone he meets. In the midst of this chaos, can Fred negotiate peace between the two biggest nastiest warlords of the apocalypse, Lord Bonkers and Papa Mayhem?

First in a series. The second book, Your Pal Fred, Low Power was released this year, and I can’t wait to check it out!

This short, very biased, and not at all up to date list only scratches the surface, since, in the last 20 years, middle grade and YA fantasy have exploded. So good hunting! And be sure to pick up my book, The Black Market if this kind of thing appeals to you.

Hi, Neal! Welcome back! How have the past 18 months been since we last spoke?

Great–I’ve been traveling a lot. Between my tour for COURAGE TO DREAM (my first graphic novel) and book 2 of my middle grade NOAH Files, SHOCK THE MONKEY,  (with Eric Elfman) I’ve been all over the US. I managed to visit 43 US schools in 1 month on the tour. Speaking with all those students and their educators was truly inspiring and made me want to get right back to writing. I was also thankful to do quite a few international events–Brazil, Switzerland, Poland, Spain, South Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan, to name a few. I couldn’t be more grateful that visiting my readers allows me to share and experience so many of their cultures and countries. It’s certainly been busy though–good busy as long as I’m meeting my deadlines. I just finished my first draft for ALL BETTER NOW, my novel due out in February, and I’m working on a prequel for SCYTHE.

Your latest novel, Break to You, is out July 2nd and co-authored with Debra Young and Michelle Knowlden! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

Five words huh?  Okay — how about:  Romeo and Juliet in Juvie.

What can readers expect?

While BREAK TO YOU could be considered a romance, I always try to write stories that transcend genre. And while romance is marketed mostly to girls, my personal challenge was to craft a romance that would be equally appealing to boys. With a strong female character in Adriana, and a strong male character in Jon, it strikes a balance and will hopefully reach a broad audience.

Where did the inspiration for Break to You come from?

Michelle Knowlden, Debra Young, and I wrote a lot of BREAK TO YOU in the midst of COVID lockdown. This gave us a wholly new and intimate perspective on how isolation affects a person’s mental health, their connection to others, their hope, and their humanity. We began to develop a teen’s perspective and how the isolation of incarceration might affect a developing person on a much larger and lasting scale. Since I’d previously visited incarcerated kids and the educators who advocated for them, I immediately thought of those lives and the story I’d been longing to write for them. This book is our declaration that they are seen, they are not forgotten, and that the future is still theirs to shape! Once those dots were connected, we felt compelled to bring light and humanity to young people facing one of the most brutal forms of systemic isolation in our country–the juvenile justice system.

Break to You is co-authored with Debra Young and Michelle Knowlden. Can you tell us a bit about how that collaborative process worked?

From the moment BREAK TO YOU was bought in the concept stage, I knew I wanted to work with Michelle, and our mutual friend Debra.  (Michelle and I have worked together on stories in UnBound, and Gleanings.) The best part was that we were able to contribute our independent strengths narratively, with each of us writing our share, weaving it all together like a braid. We all did loads of research together and leaned on each other when we were digging into the depths of what these characters were going through emotionally. Sadly, our co-author Debra passed away prior to BREAK TO YOU’s release, but I’m honored to speak about her last written work with the same level of admiration and respect as I’ve always had for her. I met Debra over twenty-five years ago in the Fictionaires, a critique group in Orange County, California. As a writer, she was brilliant, her work spanning multiple genres, styles, and themes. It was always a pleasure when she shared her writing. While I wish she could have seen the completed book, I know she’s there on every page.

Were there any moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?

I have a hard time playing favorites with characters I’ve created, so I will try to give you three spoiler-free moments from three POVs in BREAK TO YOU. There’s a turning point where one of the main characters, Jon, confesses why he’s there, a moment when the other main character,  Adriana, speaks through lyrics, and there’s a moment when a secondary character, Silas, stands up to the system, and really comes into his own.

What do you hope readers take away from Break to You?

We hope our readers will realize how broken the juvenile detention system is and that the kids in these systems are still kids full of hopes and dreams. And we want everyone to keep in mind that, since we did as much research as we did, we can confirm that alot of the things we portrayed in BREAK TO YOU are really happening in detention centers. There was a point where our editor had to do some independent research because she couldn’t believe that what we wrote could actually be happening in real life–such as kids in foster care being incarcerated, because there are no foster homes for them.   It was important to me to reach kids in detention, so every stop on the tour includes a visit to a Juvenile Detention facility.

What’s next for you?

After the BREAK TO YOU tour–which takes me to Southern California, New York, Connecticut, Miami, North Florida, Chicago, Dallas and Houston)–I’m finally taking a bit of a break to host an informal writers’ retreat for some colleagues and close friends. (Well, I guess it’s not really a break, because we’ll all be writing!) I have a little more time to get caught up on various projects, including the development of SCYTHE as a TV series–and then I’m  back on the tour trail for Fall!  My first stops are Tokyo, Beijing, and Shanghai!

Lastly, what books have you enjoyed so far this year and are there any that you can’t wait to get your hands on?

I recently got to view an ARC of Lamar Giles RUIN ROAD, and I can’t wait for it to be on shelves. It’s captivating and suspenseful.  Right now I’m reading a non-fiction book about mutiny on the high seas, called The Wager by David Grann.  I’m also going to try… for the third time… to read David Foster Wallace’s INFINITE JEST.  We’ll see if I make it this time!

Hi, Neal! Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

Well, I’ve somehow managed to make an entire career out of making stuff up, which I still find amazing. I’ve published 50 books, and hopefully have another fifty left in me. They vary in genre, but they’re all stories that challenge readers to think, from a surreal take on mental illness in CHALLENGER DEEP, which won the National Book Award, to the consequences of immortality, in the ARC OF A SCYTHE series.

When did you first discover your love for writing?

When I was in 9^th grade, I really began to feel “writerly.” I had an English teacher who challenged me to write stories every month for extra credit, and by the end of that school year, I kind of got to be known as “the kid who writes,”  and it stuck.

Quick lightning round! Tell us the first book you ever remember reading, the one that made you want to become an author, and one that you can’t stop thinking about!

First book I remember reading would be FOX IN SOX – which I still think I have entirely memorized.  The book that made me want to become an author – that would be a four-way tie between CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, JAWS, LORD OF THE RINGS, and LORD OF THE FLIES.  The one book I can’t stop thinking about…  FEED, by M.T. Anderson.

Your latest novel, Gleanings, is out tomorrow! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

Well, being that it’s a story collection within the world of SCYTHE, how about “Fourteen mind-bending takes on immortality.”

What can fans of the Arc of a Scythe series expect from this latest installment?

Origin stories of some of their favorite characters.  Some dark stories, some funny ones. Stories told from unexpected perspectives, dreams, surrealism, butchered Shakespeare, and a homicidal dog.

Can you tell us a bit about the challenges you faced while writing these stories and how you were able to overcome them?

I think the biggest challenge was knowing when to stop.  Writing a story collection is different from writing a novel, or series, because each story is it’ own independent unit.  There were SO many stories I wanted to tell in the SCYTHE world, I had trouble stopping.  I still have half a dozen stories that I started but never finished.

Gleanings features collaborators David Yoon, Jarrod Shusterman, Sofía Lapuente, Michael H. Payne, Michelle Knowlden, and Joelle Shusterman. What was the process like? 

I love getting the chance to collaborate – it was like inviting them all into my sandbox, and getting to play.  Everyone added something fun and unique to the project.  Jarrod and Sofía brought an international flare, because Sofía’s from Spain, and their story takes place in Barcelona between Scythes Gaudí and Dalí. Mike Payne specializes in anthropomorphized animal stories, so I knew I wanted to work with him in telling a story about pets in the world of Scythe.  I love David Yoon’s work, and had collaborated with him on a movie pitch—he was so great to work with that I wanted to work on a story with him for Gleanings, and love the result!  I’ve worked with Michelle before, but this Inception-esque story really pushed both of us into new, fun territory creatively.  And I’m thrilled that my daughter Joelle wrote a piece that is perfect to open the book with!

Were there any favorite moments or characters you really enjoyed exploring further?

I loved getting the chance to explore Scythe Goddard as a creepy, vindictive teen.  I also loved getting to see Scythe Curie in her first days as a scythe.  Stylistically, I really enjoyed writing a story that’s a bit of an homage to Poe’s “The Masque of the Red Death,” told by the Thunderhead as narrator.

What’s the best and worst writing advice you have received?

Best advice was given to me by a professor in college, who told me to step out of my comfort zone as a writer, and to try writing different genres, and stories that made me uncomfortable.  Worst advice I ever got was the opposite:  “Stick to what you know.”  If you stick to what you know, then you’ll never learn anything new.

A mid-grade series I’m cowriting with Eric Elfman – the first book is called I AM THE WALRUS, due out in April,  then in September, a Holocaust-themed graphic novel I’ve been working on for ten years, illustrated by Andrés Vera Martinez, entitled COURAGE TO DREAM.  Then at the end of 2023, the first book of a brand new Sci-fi series – the title of the first book is ALL BETTER NOW.  But you’ll have to wait to find out what it’s about!

I’m a little behind on my 2022 reads, but I can definitely say that two of my favorites are Sabaa Tahir’s ALL MY RAGE and Ruta Sepetys’ I MUST BETRAY YOU. For 2023 – I’m admittedly partial—but RETRO by Jarrod Shusterman and Sofía Lapuente!

What would you do if your entire world has changed, and you are the only one to remember how it should be? From the bestselling author of the Scythe series, Neal Shusterman, comes Game Changer, a new novel about being the center of the universe and how our limited points of view and biases influence the worlds around us. Blending sci-fi elements of universe hopping, philosophical conversations, and dystopian yet uncomfortably similar worlds, Game Changer tackles a lot of difficult themes head-on.

Ash is a white teenage boy that would like to think that he is a good person. He has a diverse group of friends that “checks off his box of social responsibility”, he is a football star, and he thinks that he understands his privilege enough to go to protests but not enough to call out other guys on his team that make racist jokes. With one hit on the football field though, life begins to look a little different. At first, stop signs are blue, and he is the only one who can remember that they should be red. But the next time Ash is hit on the field, he enters a world where his father is suddenly rich and he is a drug dealer. And then in the next universe, segregation is legal. The people in his life begin to act differently, influenced by the changes, and even Ash begins to battle with his new identities. As he continues to fall into different dimensions that distort his world more and more, he must figure out how to get back to his original world before he loses himself and everyone he cares about.

The novel is fast-paced and I was very engaged throughout the entire story, wondering how each universe could change what we already know. With only a few pages to set up the world, Ash starts falling into dimensions right away, pulling us in with him right away because the book has a lot to cover. Shusterman’s use of jumping through dimensions was well thought out, and the sci-fi details and reimagining of the parallel universe trope and concepts of history being connected in surprising ways were captivating. Ash is guided by multidimensional beings, which Ash calls the Edwards, that multiply after each universe jump. They are delightfully chaotic as they attempt to guide Ash through this massive experience, and they not only provide rich background and context, but each of their motivations is complex and engaging.

The entire premise is very innovative and timely, even touching on events of 2020. It was fascinating to see how one event changing in history can create massive ripple effects, both in the social structure of the world and personally in Ash’s life. It could be uncomfortable at times, and opens up a lot of conversations worth having on subjects like racism, sexism, homophobia, and abuse. Ash pauses his narration once and awhile with philosophical monologues and questions for us readers to think about. This choice opens up the conversation further and builds up tension for what was to come but also comes across as a bit preachy. However, even though the messages were a bit heavy-handed and given right to us, I find myself still reflecting on everything the book tackles, and can safely say that it left a strong impression. It was a very ambitious feat that was clearly written with care over a long period of time, which Shusterman himself explains in a letter to the reader on the first page of the novel. He mentions that he hopes that the book can aid with healing and empathy and in many ways, he succeeded in putting Ash in some incredibly difficult and uncomfortable positions.

Ash’s point of view is extremely limiting, but this narration style just emphasises how much he could never understand. He tries to make it clear that he is not a hero and is just trying to fix the worlds because he feels responsible for breaking them. He is apologetic as he recounts his tale and emphasises how the situation is much bigger than his own actions, even as he literally becomes the center of the universe. It often feels like he is still trying to process his experience by explaining it to us the reader to encourage us to make the world better, to learn from his mistakes.

The other characters, especially his friends Leo and Katie were very likeable and had so much potential but sometimes became reduced down to their position in the world, as either a Black best friend or a white woman that can’t get out of a toxic relationship. Although the narration hints at a lot more happening in their lives that we wouldn’t see through Ash’s eyes, sometimes they just felt like tools to show how Ash doesn’t understand racism, sexism, abuse, and homophobia. Ash experiences the majority of moments of liberation and development but it would have been more powerful to see his friends have a bit more agency and moments of power.

Overall, I think that it is a well-intentioned and thought-provoking book that left me wanting more. I do wish though that it had focused on developing the consequences of one or two of the worlds because each topic Ash was getting a crash course in was so huge. I loved the concept and appreciated the message that the book was sharing, but it could have been executed differently. It tried to fit too much in which started to water down the severity of the very real problems. Game Changer is still worth reading and discussing, especially for readers interested in exploring the “what ifs” of distorted realities or tackling difficult conversations through a different lens.

2020 has been one heck of a year. A global pandemic, natural disasters, and (surprisingly) aliens have been a few of the main events of this very weird season of life of Earth. But do you want more? Then you add a water crisis to the mix! If you love a good-old apocalypse, this is the best time to read Dry, which published in 2018 and is written by Jarrod Shusterman and his father, Neal Shusterman—author of the outstanding Arc of the Scythe trilogy. Set sometime in the near future, the narration follows Alyssa, her little brother, Garrett, and her neighbor, Kelton, in their search for a way to survive once the area of California suddenly runs out of water.

Dry is an action movie trapped inside the pages of a book. A story that will take your breath away to such a point that you will find yourself gasping for air in the most critical points of the characters’ journey. The pace of this novel is incredibly dynamic, moving from scene to scene with precision and ease. Thanks to the different snapshot fragments they include between chapters to show the consequences of the water crisis from as many perspectives as possible, the narrative structure perfectly mimics the buildup of takes that conform a cinematic production. At the same time, for a novel that is basically plot-driven, the main characters are fully developed, each with a set of traits and skills that complement those of the others at the most necessary times.

Action-packed with the raw and desperate tone of a world in shambles, the California in the brink of apocalypse that Neal and Jarrod Shusterman create is nothing but worryingly believable. Even more so if read during the trying time that 2020 has become. There is no doubt that human behaviour is predictable, but reading Dry becomes eye-opening when some of the decisions people make during the novel could be extrapolated into our current situation. Polarising actions become increasingly clashing, as fighting for survival brings the worst and the best out of individuals. Losing or regaining faith in humanity is definitely up for the reader, who will become the judge of the characters in the novel. Would you kill for a bottle of water? Would you raid your neighbour’s house in search for a way to survive? Will you help other people and teach them how to survive? Clearly, you will not know the answer until you find yourself in such a drastic situation.

But, not everything about the novel are gunshots, fights, and chase scenes. Even if lacking on diverse representation, the Shustermans offer a thought-provoking exploration of humanity, empathy, and human behaviour when put into the most extreme situations. Subtly enough, they also put forward a discussion on how not only is the upbringing of a person influenced by socioeconomics to the very core, but also the way people confront hardships. Blissful obliviousness versus resigned survival pit the two extremes of the social ladder against each other, showing that money loses its value once society breaks apart. And if you have never had to fight for your own survival…you will have a harder time when things go south. How the tables turn, right?

Along with this poignant social commentary, Neal and Jarrod Shusterman also explore the deep influence that media has on its audience. They show how newscasts are able to control what people believe and focus on. Once a crisis arises, whether people panic or shrug things off depends on what the media wants to project into the population. As another element that can be translated into our current situation, this particular detail of their narration acquires drastic relevance to the current readership.

All things considered, Dry is an immensely entertaining novel, where action and social discussion are combined to a perfect blend. It is certain that Neal and Jarrod Shusterman’s work has the potential to become timeless, as it does not beat around the bush when portraying the best and the worst traits of human nature. No matter the crisis the world has to face, humanity never seems to learn from its mistakes, but maybe novels like these will slowly, but steadily start to open our eyes.
