Hi, Morgan! Welcome back! It’s been a few years since we last spoke, how have you been?

I’ve been good! Writing and working and excited about upcoming books

Quick lightning round! Tell us:

• The first book you ever remember reading: I honestly can’t remember! I’m sure it was a picture book that I pretended to read, because I’d memorized it. Knowing me, it was Eloise or Madeline – I had a thing for girls who lived in cities and got into mischief.
• The one that made you want to become an author: I didn’t know I wanted to be an author until pretty late, compared to a lot of writers, who know in elementary school. For me, it was reading Sarah Dessen and Meg Cabot and Ann Brashares – books that made me feel like maybe I could do this, too.
• The one that you can’t stop thinking about: One of my all-time favorite books is The Blue Castle by LM Montgomery. I re-read it every year, and find new things in it each time. More recently, I love the Thursday Murder Club mystery series, by Richard Osman. I feel like I know these characters, like they’re real people. It’s the best.

Your latest novel, Gradchanted, is out March 4^th! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

Secrets. Loop. Learning. Fun. Love.

What can readers expect?

Gradchanted is the story of Cass, who’s spent her whole life moving from town to town. She’s learned it’s best to leave without saying goodbye – no drawn out farewells, just a fresh start. Which is why she knows Grad Nite at Disneyland is the perfect way to have one last great night with her best friend Bryony.

But almost as soon as Grad Nite starts, everything goes wrong. All the people from Cass’s past – that she thought she’d never see again – are popping up. She gets in a huge fight with Bryony, and she even wrecks the big break of cute British bassist Freddie Sharma. So Cass, as ever, decides to cut her losses and leave – only to find herself thrown for a time loop.

Now, the queen of ghosting isn’t able to escape. She’ll have to learn to correct her mistakes, make things right with Bryony – maybe even fall for Freddie. Because if not…she might be stuck at Grad Nite for good.

Where did the inspiration for Gradchanted come from?

I got to spend a lot of time at Disneyland doing research for my first Disney book, Promchanted. (I know – it’s a tough gig!) I think it was one of those research trips that I started thinking about the time loop idea. Once I’d thought of the premise of time loop at Disneyland I started thinking about the best place for it. And Grad Nite just seemed like the perfect moment – everyone on the cusp of change, wanting to move forward…and Cass, stuck going around and around again.

Were there any moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?

A lot of time loop books don’t have that many loops – they usually reset when a character goes to sleep, so you only get a handful of them. I wanted to make this much more like a time loop movie, where Cass could re-set the time loop whenever she needed to. I wanted her to really grow over the course of this book – I think by the end there’s 140+ loops (some of these only last a few seconds, though). And there’s one loop at the end where she’s finally getting everything right – fixing all the things, being in the right place at the right time, solving the mysteries. You’re seeing everything pay off, and that was so fun to write.

Did you face any challenges whilst writing? How did you overcome them?

The time loop concept itself was harder than I’d thought it would be! So much had to be set up in that first loop, so we can keep coming back to it. It really took me a while to get that one just right.

What are some of the key lessons you’ve learned as an author and about the publishing world since your debut 15 years ago?

So many things! And obviously, the publishing industry has changed so much in that time! I feel like the biggest thing I’ve learned is that you have to listen to the stories you want to tell – those are always the ones that will resonate the most.

What’s next for you?

I’m working on my second middle-grade novel! I had so much fun writing my debut MG, The Firefly Summer, I wanted to do another one.

Lastly, what books are you looking forward to picking up this year?

I’m so excited for Emily Henry’s newest, Great Big Beautiful Life. And I think it’s not coming out until next year, but I can’t wait for Victoria Aveyard’s Tempest! And top of my list is Lynn Painter’s Fake Skating.

It was a surprise even to me that, six books into a YA writing career, I zoomed into the Middle Grade lane. Writing for a younger audience was always something I thought I would do at some point in the future – if only just because I love reading MG so, so much. I find it difficult to read YA while I’m writing it, so when I’m actively drafting, I tend to read either books for younger readers, or for adults. My MG favorites are some of my favorite books of all time, in any age range – The Penderwicks series, the Vanderbeekers books, everything Rebecca Stead writes. They’re truly my comfort books, and the ones I return to when a day has been particularly long or trying. So given all that, I assumed at some point, I would write for younger readers. My only problem? I didn’t have a story.

Every now and then I would brainstorm, trying to think of ideas for younger characters. But most of them just seemed like something that could be one of my YA novels, but with a 12 year old instead of a 17 year old. Sometimes I’d get a few pages in, only to realize there was no life on the page and nothing I was really excited about – and so I’d put that idea aside and focus on my teen books.

But then one day – out of the blue – I suddenly had my idea. It felt truly Middle Grade deep in its bones, not just a YA in MG clothing. Just like that, I could see the setting, the characters, the vague arch of the story. And I was so excited about it. This was in late 2019, so I was just noodling on the idea, but without any real deadlines. And then – in March – the pandemic happened! (Perhaps you heard of it?)

Suddenly I realized I was about to have a lot more time on my hands, since I was no longer going to be traveling, or seeing friends, or, you know, leaving my house. I jumped into writing The Firefly Summer just two weeks into the pandemic.

In retrospect, it was the perfect book to be writing at that moment. Writing it gave me the most wonderful vacation from the current state of the world. Every time I sat down to write, I was so excited to be spending my time at a lake, in a former summer camp, eating ice cream and s’mores, stargazing and chasing down treasure. And when I look back on it now, I realize that I was putting into the story everything I currently wished I had. It’s a story about a family all living together, spending time together and having adventures.

It has been such a fun experiment, this middle grade jaunt. I’m not done with YA, don’t worry – after Firefly was done, I immediately jumped into writing my next teen book. But I’m also working on my next middle grade. It was a world I was so excited to get to finally enter – and now that I’m here, I think I’ll stay awhile.

We chat with Morgan about inspiration, challenges, and all things Take Me Home Tonight!

Hi Morgan! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your new novel Take Me Home Tonight?

Hi Andrea! So excited to be chatting with you! I’m the YA author of 6 books (including TMHT). I’m originally from the East Coast (NYC and a town in Connecticut that Stanwich is based on) but now live in LA with my dog Murphy.

Take Me Home Tonight is set over one-life changing night for best friends Kat and Stevie. They sneak away from the Connecticut suburbs to spend a night in NYC, but almost immediately, everything starts to go wrong. Between family drama, phone disasters, irascible cab drivers and unexpected Pomeranians, the two girls will have to learn how to navigate a night they never expected in the city that never sleeps. But by the end of the night – and over a series of misadventures – they’ll have become closer to each other – and closer to a truer version of themselves.

What sets Take Me Home Tonight apart from other young adult books?

There were a few things I wanted to do with TMHT! I wanted to explore a best friendship, and I wanted to explore that moment, late in high school, when it feels like all your choices are so fraught. Both Kat and Stevie go to a competitive high school and both have been very involved in their school’s theater program. I wanted to show a little bit of that tunnel vision that can set in when you’re a teen and so involved with a program or sport or activity. I was one myself – I was a total theater nerd in high school. So I wanted to examine both the good and the bad that can come with that.

Why did you choose to set the majority of this novel in New York City?

My last few books have all been set in the same (fictional!) suburban town in Connecticut. And I really wanted to open up the world a bit for this book. Kat and Stevie are big fish in their small town pond, and I wanted to throw them into the deep end (that metaphor kind of got away from me, huh?). I always think that a really fun way to get characters to grow is to take them way out of their comfort zone and see what happens – which is certainly the case with Kat and Stevie!

And also, I just love New York! It was so fun to get to write about it in all its glory – bad theater and swanky hotels and the world’s best hot dogs and flirting in bodegas. There’s no place like it – and no place where everything seems so possible.

What is the main message that you want readers to take away from this novel?

I feel like the main message is that it’s okay to not have everything figured out. Both Kat and Stevie are putting pressure on themselves to have their path forward all sorted. And in doing so, that they might miss out on discovering things or parts of themselves they didn’t even know about. That there’s always room for change – in a friendship, in a relationship, in a life path.

How did you choose the names for the characters in this book (I am especially curious about how you chose the name for Brad the Pomeranian)?

Choosing names for characters is one of my favorite parts of writing! Kat and Stevie’s names came really quickly – Teri’s too. I’ve always loved the name Stevie for a girl – because of Stevie Nicks, of course. I also grew up with a girl who goes by Stevie and she’s basically the coolest person ever, so I wanted to give my Stevie some of that cachet. And you find out that Stevie (her full name is Stephanie) has been named after her father, Stephen. Since a lot of what Stevie needs to work through in the book is in relation to her dad, I thought that was a nice way to highlight that.

I also don’t know if I ever say it actually, but in my mind, Kat’s middle name is Amalia. So her name is Kat Amalia Thompson, which means her initials also spell out her name, because I love it when that happens.

Brad’s name was originally Gary! I thought Gary the dog would be fun. But there’s a character named Cary in the book, and so that was too close. It needed to be a name that sounded like a human name for a bit of a misunderstanding. But Brad as a dog’s name really grew on me! If I ever get a second dog, it’s definitely on my list now.

Some of the characters from your other books appeared in Take Me Home Tonight. Have any of your real-life friends or family members ever made appearances in your books, whether it be as a character or their traits?

Yes! I love putting little shout-outs to my friends and family members while writing. Stevie’s dad lives in the apartment building that I grew up in in Manhattan, and the Tom Cruise-themed dry cleaner is a shoutout to my friends in my movie club.

But in terms of characters, it’s more little quirks and moments rather than basing a whole character on someone. I need the freedom to fictionalize people who make lots of mistakes!

What challenges did you face while writing Take Me Home Tonight and how did you overcome them?

The structure of the book was definitely the hardest – feeling like I knew what was happening to each girl when, how they would overlap, where their nights would take them. It took a while to get that mapped out – and then when it was done, I felt like I could really jump into the book. But I had to have that solidly done first!

What are some things that you do to cheer yourself up when you are feeling down?

I love watching a good, stupid comedy, going on a hike with a friend, playing with my dog, or chatting with a pal.

Lastly, what was the last book you read?

I just read Anna Carey’s This is Not the Jess Show and loved it!

In this novel, Morgan Matson truly highlights the power of friendship and family (including stepfamilies) as well as the importance of being true to yourself and choosing to do what makes you happy. This book would be ideally suited for those who enjoy fast-paced novels filled with adventure, drama, and romance. It would also be an awesome read for people who have travelled to or want to travel to New York City; Stevie and Kat end up (unintentionally) doing a lot of exploring in the city!

I have read and enjoyed some of Matson’s previous novels and Take Me Home Tonight was written in a similar style, so it lived up to my high expectations. Firstly, I thought it was neat that some of the characters from Matson’s other YA novels (e.g. Amy from Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour, Gelsey from Second Chance Summer, and Beckett from Since You’ve Been Gone) made appearances in this novel! In a way, Take Me Home Tonight is almost like a sequel for these characters as we get some much-desired insight into what happened to these characters after their stories ended. Although, it is not necessary to have read Matson’s “Detours, Do-Overs, and Dares” collection before you read Take Me Home Tonight. I also liked how, even though Stevie and Kat are separated for most of the book, their individual adventures continue to (subtly) connect back to each other’s storylines and other events happening in the book.

To be honest, I didn’t really like Teri’s portion of the story and I could have done without it as the dangerous CIA mission wasn’t as fun to read about and it didn’t fit in well with Kat and Stevie’s exciting New York adventure. Another downside for me was the fact that things were sometimes repeated since the story was told from three different perspectives. Lastly, since the novel switched between three different storylines, I was frustrated by having to wait several chapters before finding out what happened next in certain storylines; for example, the chapters from Teri’s perspective are suspenseful, while also being few and far between.

Overall, Take Me Home Tonight was an enjoyable book to read with it being a fun tale set in New York City that is adventurous, easy to read, and focused on friendship!

Ever since Taylor Swift released Folklore back in July, I have been completely obsessed with this mystical and immersive album. It makes you feel like you’re wandering in the forest all by yourself, lost in your thoughts, and searching for something that’s so much bigger than yourself. If you enjoyed it as much as I did, then you’re probably wanting to relive some of the emotions you’ve had while listening to Folklore and what better way to do it than to read some books that are in the same vein! I’ve paired each song with a book or a series that I consider very similar in tone and themes, so hopefully you will find these books as magical as Folklore…

The 1 – On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan

On Chesil Beach is the story of a young love that failed due to miscommunication. Florence and Edward’s wedding night is somewhat of a fiasco because they are both unexperienced and they both harbour a huge fear of letting the other down. Instead of talking openly about those worries and their desires, they keep trying and failing to interpret what the other wants. Shortly after their wedding night, they get a divorce which makes the rest of the book be full of ‘what-ifs’ that are reminiscent to Swift’s lyrics in The 1 (You know the greatest films of all time were never made/But we were something, don’t you think so?/Roaring twenties, tossing pennies in the pool/And if my wishes came true/It would’ve been you).

Cardigan – The Winner’s Curse Trilogy by Marie Rutkoski

These lyrics from Cardigan (Sensual politics/When you are young, they assume you know nothing/But I knew you’d linger like a tattoo kiss/I knew you’d haunt all of my what-ifs/The smell of smoke would hang around this long/’Cause I knew everything when I was young) remind me so much of Kestrel, the protagonist of the series who is such a great strategist. Everybody keeps underestimating her all through the series because she’s young, but her intelligence and political skills always make her come on top. Her relationship with Arin also matches the lyrics very well as he’s the only one who really sees her for who she is, he appreciates her and makes her feel valued (And when I felt like I was an old cardigan/Under someone’s bed/You put me on and said I was your favorite).

The book also gives amazing advice to modern women on how to solve their problems from dealing with men that keep interrupting them in business meetings to dealing with the pressure social media puts on you to be perfect – all based on how women like Cleopatra, Coco Chanel, and Frida Kahlo acted in similar situations.

Exile – The Queen of Nothing by Holly Black

The Queen of Nothing is the final instalment in the The Folk of the Air trilogy and it explores the aftermath of Jude’s exile, which has been imposed by her fae lover. The two have a very tumultuous enemies-to-lovers relationship that includes constantly trying to best each other, misinterpreting the signals they receive and denying their feelings which reminds me very much of this song (We always walked a very thin line/You didn’t even hear me out/You never gave a warning sign/All this time/I never learned to read your mind/I couldn’t turn things around/’Cause you never gave a warning sign). I can definitely see it playing in the background while Jude is trying to pinpoint the exact moment that lead to her exile.

My Tears Ricochet – A Ladder to the Sky by John Boyne

I was struggling to find a book that deals with a betrayal that’s as brutal and heartbreaking as the one depicted In My Tears Ricochet, but then I thought of A Ladder to the Sky which is an incredible fit. Maurice has no remorse while he climbs up the ladder of success by stealing the stories of those who loved him. He plagiarises, he betrays, he destroys lives only to make sure that his name will be immortalised. If the book focuses on Maurice’s perspective and is the account of a ruthless opportunist, the song would present the victims’ perspective (You know I didn’t want to have to haunt you/But what a ghostly scene/You wear the same jewels that I gave you/As you bury me/And when you can’t sleep at night/You hear my stolen lullabies).

One of the most glamorous songs off the album, mirrorball is very similar to Reid’s book in terms of atmosphere. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is about a retired Hollywood movie star who’s ready to finally tell the truth about her scandalous and captivating life that included lots of parties, film premieres and fancy clothes (I’ll get you out on the floor/Shimmering beautiful/ You’ll find me on my tallest tiptoes/Spinning in my highest heels, love/Shining just for you). The protagonist relished being the centre of attention back in the day, had a love life that got everyone talking and her ambition and charm secured her movie icon status (I’m a mirrorball/I can change everything about me to fit in/I’m still trying everything/To keep you looking at me). The book is bigger than life and so is the song, this dramatic flair that they share will have you completely under their spell.

Seven – Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson

Bridge to Terabithia is about Jess Aarons whose biggest dream is to be the fastest runner in his grade and about Leslie Burke, the new girl that outruns him on the very first day of school. It’s about the power of imagination, pure friendships and how much easier things are when you are a child (Please picture me in the trees/I hit my peak at seven/Feet in the swing over the creek/I was too scared to jump in/But I, I was high in the sky/With Pennsylvania under me/Are there still beautiful things?). Just like Swift’s Seven, the book doesn’t shy away from the grittier subjects – it’s not all about getting lost in magical worlds, it’s also about loss, dealing with grief and bullying (And I think you should come live with me/And we can be pirates/Then you won’t have to cry/Or hide in the closet/And just like a folk song/Our love will be passed on).

August – They Say Sarah by Pauline Delabroy-Allard

They Say Sarah tells the story of a passionate and obsessive love affair between two women, a single mother who is trying to navigate the newly divorced life and a vivacious and talented violinist. The unnamed narrator has a gloomy perspective on life, every day seems to blur into the other, she doesn’t like her job as a teacher anymore and her love life is quite boring all until she meets Sarah. They have a very magnetic connection from the beginning, but there is also this sense of constant desperation at the prospect of their relationship ending (And I can see us twisted in bedsheets/August sipped away like a bottle of wine/’Cause you were never mine). Sarah is very spontaneous and volatile which means that their relationship is full of clandestine meetings, intense break-ups and even more intense reconciliations (To live for the hope of it all/Cancel plans just in case you’d call/And say, “Meet me behind the mall”/So much for summer love and saying “us”/’Cause you weren’t mine to lose/You weren’t mine to lose, no). 

This Is Me Trying – Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson

This Is Me Trying reminded me very much of Matson’s protagonist, Emily as the lyrics are filled with regret, self-doubt, uncertainty and longing for a time when everything was just fine. In the beginning of the book, we find Emily trying to adjust to an unexciting life without her best-friend, Sloane, the one who always brought her out of her shell and made sure they were always having a great time. The only thing Sloane leaves her is a list of crazy and way out of Emily’s comfort zone activities which she decides to complete hoping that they will bring her closer to Sloane and help her understand why she had left so suddenly (I’ve been having a hard time adjusting/I had the shiniest wheels, now they’re rusting/I didn’t know if you’d care if I came back/I have a lot of regrets about that/Could’ve followed my fears all the way down/And maybe I don’t quite know what to say/But I’m here in your doorway/I just wanted you to know/That this is me trying). Since You’ve Been Gone is a fun summer book about friendships and finding who you are even if it’s scary.

​Illicit Affairs – Normal People by Sally Rooney

I believe Normal People could have worked for more than one song off this album, but Illicit Affairs fit it perfectly in particular. The book is about Marianne and Connell who start dating each other in secret at the beginning of their senior year of high-school, there are socio-economical differences, their respective reputations at their school and miscommunication that keeps them from admitting that they are together (Make sure nobody sees you leave/Hood over your head, keep your eyes down/Tell your friends you’re out for a run/You’ll be flushed when you return/And that’s the thing about illicit affairs/And clandestine meetings and longing stares/It’s born from just one single glance/But it dies and it dies and it dies/A million little times). Normal People explores the depth of their relationship as the years pass, it shows how strong human connections can be and how the love of someone else can change you for the better. It’s also very angsty at times because of how intense their on-and-off relationship is (Don’t call me kid/Don’t call me baby/Look at this idiotic fool that you made me/You taught me a secret language/I can’t speak with anyone else/And you know damn well/For you I would ruin myself/A million little times).

Invisible String – Lovely War by Julie Berry

Invisible String is all about fate and a meant-to-be love that could defy all, which made me think of Lovely War almost instantly. Lovely War is about two couples that fall in love during World War I and it’s definitely similar in themes with the song as Aphrodite intervenes on many occasions to make sure that their love will last and they have to overcome so many obstacles in order to stay together (Time, mystical time/Cutting me open, then healing me fine/Were there clues I didn’t see?/And isn’t it just so pretty to think/All along there was some/Invisible string/Tying you to me?). It’s a beautiful tale that similarly to Swift’s song will make you believe that love can conquer it all.

Mad Woman – Sin Eater by Megan Campisi

Sin Eater is the story of May who is punished to become a Sin Eater after stealing bread, her responsibilities include listening to the confessions of those who are about to die and then eating various foods that are associated with the confessed sins. This was an actual medieval spiritual practice that ensured people will be absolved of their sins and granted passage to heaven as the Sin Eater took all these sins on. Because of this, Sin Eaters are outcasts – no one is allowed to touch them, speak to them unless it’s during a confession which definitely made May feel angry and isolated (And there’s nothing like a mad woman/What a shame she went mad/No one likes a mad woman/You made her like that). There’s the feeling of being wronged, the topic of witches coming up and a whole mystery surrounding a court that is very similar to Elizabeth I’s that make this book so similar to the song (And women like hunting witches too/Doing your dirtiest work for you/It’s obvious that wanting me dead/Has really brought you two together/I’m taking my time, taking my time/’Cause you took everything from me).

Epiphany – The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead

The Nickel Boys is an incredible and haunting book, it’s inspired by real life events which makes it even more heart-breaking. It tells the story of Elwood Curtis, a black boy who is unfairly sentenced to the Nickel Academy, a reformatory school. The Nickel Boys go through so much there, there’s racism, abuse in all of its forms, so much corruption and injustice, it broke my heart to read about it. The writing is so good that it makes you feel all that powerlessness and anger that the characters feel. The fact that we get to see some characters after they get out of the juvenile prison and they are still trying to make sense of what they’ve seen and what they’ve endured there so many years later reminded me a lot of Swift’s song (“Sir, I think he’s bleeding out”/And some things you just can’t speak about/Only twenty minutes to sleep/But you dream of some epiphany/Just one single glimpse of relief/To make some sense of what you’ve seen).

Betty – P.S. I Still Love You by Jenny Han

I think Betty (I’m only seventeen, I don’t know anything/But I know I miss you) reminds me so much of what happens in the second book of the To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before trilogy as it presents similar situations – people messing up because they are young and they don’t know any better. I think both try to send the message that you can love someone and still mess up pretty badly (You heard the rumors from Inez/You can’t believe a word she says/Most times, but this time it was true/The worst thing that I ever did/Was what I did to you). I can’t reveal much of the plot as it’s a sequel, but the whole trilogy is a very adorable coming of age journey – the characters make mistakes, they grow up, they are complex and you will root for them until the very end.

Peace – Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin

Serpent & Dove is the story of Lou, a witch who is in hiding after fleeing her coven and who ends up marrying Reid, a witch hunter. As you can imagine, the situation is kind of tricky as she ends up living in a place full of witch hunters and she has to hide her identity not only from her husband, but also from everyone else. The dynamics between Lou and Reid remind me especially of this song – Lou is very fiery and impulsive while Reid is the more level-headed one, Lou also makes fun of Reid so many times of his proper manners and how full of integrity he thinks he is in comparison with her and the witches (But I’m a fire and I’ll keep your brittle heart warm/If your cascade, ocean wave blues come/ Your integrity makes me seem small/You paint dreamscapes on the wall/I talk shit with my friends, it’s like I’m wasting your honor). Their initial fake marriage and then the way they develop real feelings for each other, devotion and how they’re capable of sacrificing everything for one another also reminds me of Swift’s lyrics (All these people think love’s for show/But I would die for you in secret/The devil’s in the details, but you got a friend in me/Would it be enough if I could never give you peace?/And you know that I’d swing with you for the fences/Sit with you in the trenches/Give you my wild, give you a child/Give you the silence that only comes when two people understand each other).

Hoax – Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy

Anna Karenina is the story of a woman who has it all and chooses to give it all up for love. At the beginning everyone envies her for her money, her good marriage and her beauty. After she divorces her husband in order to be with her true love, Count Vronsky, she becomes somewhat of an outcast, her reputation is tainted, everyone gossips about her, her husband won’t let her see her son – the entire world turns on her and it makes her rethink all of her choices. Her love for Vronsky remains a constant even if it’s a faithless love (My only one/My smoking gun/My eclipsed sun/This has broken me down/My sleepless night/My winless fight/This has frozen my ground/ Stood on the cliffside screaming, “Give me a reason”/Your faithless love’s the only hoax I believe in/Don’t want no other shade of blue but you/No other sadness in the world would do).

Welcome to the family behind ‘Grant Central Station’

Meet the Grants.

A big family made up of the parents, Jeffrey and Eleanor with the latter being the author and artist behind a popular comic strip based on their lives including that of their many children (in descending order): Danny, Linnie, JJ, Mike and lastly Charlie. The youngest, brightest and protagonist in this novel is Charlie who is constantly helping her parents and siblings in any way. In this story, she’s trying to keep Linnie’s wedding to Rodney from falling apart as constant disasters await them.

Being the youngest, Charlie has watched her own siblings grow up and move out of home and desperately wants to make this weekend the best since this is the first time in years that everyone will be under the same roof, including her favourite brother Danny. However, at each and every turn there seems to be a disaster in the way of her plan. Meanwhile, she’s also trying to manage romantically reuniting with her long time high school crush Jesse and deciding on what college to attend in the next few months.

This novel is the first of many books to read by Morgan Matson because I’ve found this book exceptional. The story, the characters, the action, and how they are both described and created makes you figuratively fall in love with this family. As an only child, reading the experience of having a huge family right out of the Cheaper by the Dozen movie is almost surreal and appealing.

Unexpected guests, animals, frequent unwanted alarms, and gigantic mix ups make this weekend jam-packed with everything, and it created a fast paced, energetic story that will have you flying through this book. Not to mention that this book is ridiculously funny and bound to have you laughing within the first hundred pages. Each disaster is either outrageous and stressful or the best kind of comic relief, a balance that Matson has definitely as the crowned queen of summer contemporary reads.

I stared at the beagle, who was sitting in the centre of the front hall, staring steadily back at me…. This isn’t good.

What also made this book so enjoyable to read was that unlike most contemporaries, while this novel dabbles into it, romance is certainly not at the forefront. The personal struggles Charlie was facing at watching her family together for what seems like one last time, when they’ve been and are continually geographically growing apart further as each member lives their own lives, will make you realise that we must adapt to change and move on from what we’re comfortable with sometimes. Family and coping with change are some of the beautiful themes that are so important throughout this novel and something inherently difficult to deal with for anyone including young adults who experience change at a faster speed. Finishing middle school, high school, graduating and starting to live apart from your regular family is scary and foreboding for many of us, so reading about this topic was very enlightening, refreshing and proves the impact a light-hearted contemporary can make on any reader.

Overall, Save the Date has officially been anointed to the favourites section and it definitely solidifies Matson’s reputation and popularity, which is bound to help create even more hype for her next novel. This book had me laughing, crying and slightly stressed from all the obstacles but it was incredibly enjoyable. As a highly recommended read, the Nerd Daily team and I hope you also enjoy the adventures and misadventures of the family behind Grant Central Station.

Morgan Matson is back with a new young adult romance, which was released on June 5th 2018. If you have read any other Morgan Matson books and have enjoyed them, Save the Date will not disappoint! It is a classic YA contemporary with its fast pace, which makes it perfect for the upcoming days spent on the beach or by the pool.

Charlie Grant is the youngest of give siblings, famous for their mother’s loved comic strip, “Grant Central Station”.  Charlie is a senior in high school, struggling to decide what university to attend next year and she’s in love with her older brother’s best friend. Charlie is obsessed with her older siblings, and waits eagerly for the day that they all return home and she can catch up with them, play capture the flag, and be a family once again.

This story is told over the span of three days, highlighting Charlie’s older sister wedding to her soulmate at their beloved family home. Charlie is put in a difficult situation where she has to remedy all of the obstacles that could harm the outcome of the wedding and the temperament of the bride and groom. Charlie sets off with Bill, the nephew of the wedding coordinator, to accomplish the impossible and make sure her older sister’s wedding goes according to plan. Charlie wants nothing more than to have a perfect weekend surrounded by her family, whom she adores, however, as you can guess, this does not go to plan. Charlie is left to fix all of the mistakes left by the old wedding planner, and keep things running smoothly.

As if having the weight of a wedding on your shoulders with the expectation of perfection, a fight with her best friend, the challenge of deciding what university to attend in the fall, is all not enough for a young girl, Charlie is also trying to win the heart of her brother’s best friend, Jesse.

Overall, this was a good read and I flew through this book in two days as it’s incredibly easy to devour. However, unlike most of Morgan Matson’s other works, which touch on heavier underlying themes of death, separation, love and remorse, Save the Date only slightly skimmed the surface. It did have a more important theme accompanying it, but it wasn’t as fleshed out as it should have been. Unfortunately, this was just another fluffy YA contemporary novel that features a privileged white girl, her family and the crush on her sibling’s best friend. It was not my favourite, although if you enjoy YA tropes and fast contemporary reads, you will most likely enjoy it!

In conclusion, this was a good book and if you’re looking for a quick read by the pool during summer break, this is one we would recommend! However, if you are looking for a book that leaves you pondering after, or something you cannot stop thinking about after you have put it down, I would suggest looking for another author. Morgan Matson is a very talented author and is phenomenal at writing YA love stories, but I would not expect her novels to change your life and your perception on books and reading in general.
