Hi, Michele! Welcome back! We last spoke in 2020… How have the past few years been for you?

Thank you for having me back! Like everyone else, for me the pandemic was a time to pause and look inward. I wrote THE INTERN, drank a lot of wine and ate a lot of chocolate. Now I’m out in the world again, meeting new readers and having new experiences. For example, THE INTERN was chosen as a September Book of the Month pick, which is a huge honor. I got to go to New York to film their Virtual Book Tour podcast (now available on Apple and Spotify), complete with a live audience and a bespoke cocktail. It was so fun, it felt like a true renaissance.

When did you first discover your love for writing and stories?

For as long as I can remember, I loved to read. I grew up as a latchkey kid in a marginalized neighborhood, responsible for getting myself and my younger brother home from school. (Those experiences inform the character of Madison Rivera in THE INTERN.) Books were my haven on those long afternoons indoors waiting for my parents to get home. The desire to write flowed naturally from my love of books.

Quick lightning round! Tell us:

• The first book you ever remember reading: The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare was the first book that I obsessed over. I got it from the school bookfair and reread it over and over until it fell apart.
• The one that made you want to become an author: Presumed Innocent by Scott Turow, because I was a lawyer like he was. We actually had the same job – Assistant U.S. Attorney. The fact that he’d jumped from that position to author of a riveting legal thriller not only made me want to write. It made me believe I could.
• The one that you can’t stop thinking about: I’m a huge Outlander fan and have been for years. I love the characters, the world-building, the history, the sheer escapism.

Your latest novel, The Intern, is out now! If you could only describe it in five words, what would they be?

Fast-paced, addictive, character-driven, glamorous, legal thriller. (Technically that’s more than five words, but some are hyphenated!)

What can readers expect?

THE INTERN is a high-stakes legal thriller with two strong female leads who must either join forces or destroy each other. It features an ambitious young Harvard Law student, Madison Rivera, who lands the internship of a lifetime working for Judge Kathryn Conroy. But Madison has a terrible secret that could ruin her career. Her troubled younger brother Danny has been arrested, and Conroy is the judge on his case. When Danny goes missing after accusing the judge of corruption, Madison’s desperate search for answers brings her deep into the judge’s glamorous world. Is Judge Conroy a mentor, a victim, or a criminal? The reader sees the events from the dual perspectives of the two main characters, upping the suspense until you’re on the edge of your seat. It’s a fun, wild, satisfying ride.

 Where did the inspiration for The Intern come from?

THE INTERN represents something of a return to roots for me. I actually began my writing career in the aughts with a legal thriller series written as Michele Martinez (my full name is Michele Martinez Campbell), featuring federal prosecutor Melanie Vargas. After that series ended, I turned to writing psychological thrillers and domestic suspense, including my bestsellers IT’S ALWAYS THE HUSBAND and A STRANGER ON THE BEACH. But I’ve always hankered to return to the legal thriller. THE INTERN is a true blend of those genres – the stakes and pacing of the legal thriller combined with the intensity and richness of psychological suspense, but with a female-empowerment edge.

Were there any moments or characters you really enjoyed writing or exploring?

The funny thing is, once I started writing, I related just as much to Kathryn as to Madison, and probably enjoyed writing Kathryn more. It’s ironic since Madison is based so closely on me. But the mysterious (and dangerous) Judge Conroy has secrets of her own. This book has been compared to The Departed, and Kathryn is its deep-cover spy – i.e., not who she seems. She and Madison have more in common than anyone knows, which means Kathryn also is written from my own experiences. They’re both complicated, fascinating heroines, hiding huge secrets and facing impossible choices.

This is your fifth published novel! What are some of the key lessons you have learned when it comes to writing and the publishing world?

THE INTERN is actually my ninth novel, when you count the four books in the legal thriller series written as Michele Martinez. And it’s the tenth novel I’ve written, when you include one standalone –never published –that I did in between the legal thriller series and my psychological thrillers. What I’ve learned is that the writer’s path can be a winding one, but that reinvention is exciting and creatively invigorating. I’ve been fortunate to publish frequently in different sub-genres of the crime/thriller genre, which means that I’ve never stopped having fun and growing creatively.

What’s next for you?

Speaking of reinvention, I’ve had a book in my head for years now that’s a real genre-bender, bridging thriller, historical and speculative fiction. I’m finally writing it, and loving every minute.

Too many to list, but here are just a few greats reads from my fall reading list. The Perfect Marriage by Jeneva Rose. The House Guest by Hank Phillippi Ryan. A Stolen Child by Sarah Stewart Taylor. The story opens with a diary entry written by Nina Levitt at the beginning of her own Fourth of July party. Nina is an incredibly wealthy businesswoman and philanthropist with a much younger husband, Connor, who she clearly has lost faith in. Nina seems to have some kind of knowledge or premonition (we don’t know which yet) that she will meet an untimely death at the hands of her husband. She turns out to be correct. (That’s not a spoiler, I promise – it happens in the first five pages.)

We then meet Tabitha, a hard-working waitress in New Hampshire who is almost literally a world away from the Southampton lifestyle of Nina and Connor. But Tabitha knew Connor (and even had a summer romance with him) ten years earlier. He broke her heart back then, but when he shows up out of the blue, their lives are almost instantly intertwined, just like when they were teenagers. It’s been ten years, who is Connor now? Where has he been and who did he become in those intervening years?

Of course, relationships always get complicated, and Nina’s untimely death does nothing to make things less complicated! Was it suicide, or was it murder? If it was murder, who was responsible… and why? Is there a chance that Tabitha and Connor will get to live out the fairytale-like fantasy she imagined all those years ago?

It doesn’t take long for Tabitha to understand that the glitzy, wealthy, glamorous life she has been thrust into has a dark side, and that she is poorly prepared for dealing with everything that is about to come her way.

Michele has generously given us some of her time to talk about this much-anticipated new release. We talk about how her writing process has changed as her confidence as an author has grown, as well as how authors communicate with readers in a world dealing with a pandemic. She even gives us a sneak peek at what’s coming next!

For readers that are new to you, tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a former federal prosecutor, a wife, a mom and a lifelong reader. My background prosecuting serious crime in New York City made for a natural segue to writing thrillers. I’ve also lived in many different places, and have a love of both the glitzy, bright-lights-big-city and small-town settings of my books. All of my life experience goes into my writing. My books combine suspense, love, sex, money, the haves and have-nots, with a deep knowledge of crime and criminal investigations.

From your first novel up to The Wife Who Knew Too Much, is there a difference in how you approach the story or the writing process?

I trust my writing process more now. I know that inspiration will come if I just let my characters show me the way. I have confidence that I will manage somehow to shape my meandering first draft into something twisty and propulsive. Because I’m more confident and less anxious, I can relax and enjoy the craft. I’ve hit my stride, and I’m loving writing more than ever.

For the criminal elements of your stories, do you find yourself looking back to your prosecutor days for details or plot points?

Yes, though not so much for specific plots, but more for authenticity and atmosphere. I know how crimes unfold, how perpetrators behave, what they do to cover their tracks, how the police investigate. And I know that crime is all around us, even though it might not be visible. I’m fascinated by the dark side of everyday life, by normal people doing terrible things. That’s a legacy of my years as a prosecutor and influences my writing to this day.

Tell us little about The Wife Who Knew Too Much and its inspiration!

The Wife Who Knew Too Much is a decadent summer thriller set against the glittering backdrop of the Hamptons. It explores how far people will go for love and money and is inspired by the classic psychological thrillers. It has an everywoman heroine who gets in over her head because of love – the second wife, Tabitha. And a glamorous, sophisticated, possibly evil first wife, Nina, who’s dead by chapter two. Do you love Nina or hate her? And who killed her? If you enjoy classic domestic noir, like Rebecca, Gone Girl, and The Girl on the Train, this book belongs on your summer TBR.

Do you have a favorite character or aspect of the story, or was there an element that was the most difficult to get ‘just right’?

Nina is my favorite character in this book, and she was also the most challenging to write. Nina was the first Mrs. Connor Ford, twenty years older than her boy-toy husband, wealthy, educated, glamorous, and –spoiler –now dead. Did Connor kill her for the money? Did the second Mrs. Ford, the earnest, small-town waitress Tabitha, do it, to be with Connor? For those questions to matter, the reader needs to care about Nina. It would’ve been easy to render her as a caricature, as shrewish or spoiled. I had to get her just right, so that her death would resonates and drive the plot.

How did you decide to tell the story the way you did, dividing it into sections focusing on one character’s point of view at a time?

This book is about the two wives of Connor Ford, Nina and Tabitha, who are so different from one another. Nina is experienced, cynical and difficult, but also beautiful and rich. Tabitha is the earnest, naïve small-town waitress. I felt strongly that, for this story to work, they both needed to have a voice, and their own POV chapters. The use of multiple viewpoints not only builds suspense but also intensifies the reader’s relationship with the characters, raising the stakes.

Do you have a tradition or specific celebration for after your books are released into the world?

I spend time on social media thanking all the people who helped make the book possible — agent, editor, publisher, publicist, book reviewers and bloggers, and, of course, readers! After that, I have a glass of champagne.

With the changes to the world, (lockdowns, quarantines, etc.) how do you approach (or replace) the traditional book tour?  Are there some positives and some negatives to that?

Instead of an in-person tour for The Wife Who Knew Too Much, I’ll be doing a bunch of fun virtual events open to readers everywhere. I’ll also be doing Skype or Zoom chats with book clubs. (Visit my website, MicheleCampbellBooks.com, or connect with me on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, to book a chat.) The upside of touring online is that more readers can attend my events. No travel necessary! The downside is interacting through screens rather than in person. But it’s still a ton of fun!

Now that The Wife Who Knew Too Much has come out, what are some of your most anticipated books for the rest of 2020?

My two most anticipated reads for this fall are Don’t Look for Me by Wendy Walker and And Now She’s Gone by Rachel Howzell Hall. These are wildly talented suspense writers at the top of their games. And these books are not to be missed.

Time for my favorite thing to find out … What’s next for you?!

I’m going back to my roots – in more ways than one. My new book, The Housesitter, is about a young Latina law student at Harvard who’s drawn into the web of a glamorous female professor when she’s offered a position as her housesitter. This book is a combination of a modern, female-driven psychological suspense and a classic legal thriller in the vein of John Grisham or Scott Turow. I love the law school environment and – as a former law student, lawyer and law prof – I know it like the back of my hand. On a more personal level, I’m of Puerto Rican heritage, from a modest background, and had the often-difficult experience of attending Harvard coming from that background. So, there’s a lot of my life in this book. The Housesitter is coming from St. Martin’s Press in 2022.

Michele Campbell, best-selling author of It’s Always The Husband and She Was The Quiet One, has an exciting new thriller that’s just days away from release! A Stranger On The Beach is an edgy and unforgettable tale of obsession and revenge. It will be available for sale on July 23rd, but it already seems to be on everyone’s must-read list!

Michele generously gave us some of her time and answered our questions about her background and writing inspirations, and she let us in on what character type tends to reappear in her books, as well as what she has coming next!

Hi Michele! Could you tell us a little about yourself?

I’m originally from Connecticut and have mostly lived in New York and New England, which is why my books are set in the northeast.  But I love to travel, and I’ve been all over the world, so you’ll also find great vacation destinations in my books.  (Like the trip to Jamaica in It’s Always the Husband). I was a federal prosecutor in Brooklyn before becoming an author.  So, although my books explore the dark side of personal relationships from a character-driven perspective, they also include crimes and police investigations. I’m happily married, and my husband has never tried to kill me (as far as I know). I’m a mom of two boys.

Growing up, what were some of your favorite books?

The book I read over and over again as a kid was The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare. It’s an atmospheric YA historical romance set in Connecticut in the late 17^th Century, about an independent young woman trying to survive in Puritan society who gets accused of witchcraft. It was a Newbery medalist in its day and is still widely read. I picked it up at the school book fair, fell in love and began a long tradition of rereading favorite books endlessly.

Was “writer” on your list of “Things I Want to Be When I Grow Up” or did that happen later?

I always loved to read and to write. I wrote fiction as a kid. (Haha — none of it survives, and if it did, I’d be mortified.) In high school, I worked on the school newspaper and wanted to be a journalist. In college, I fell in love with the idea of justice and decided to go to law school.  Lawyers write all the time, so that career was great training for becoming a crime novelist.

You graduated from Harvard, you went to Stanford Law School, and ultimately worked as a federal prosecutor – what was the process of moving from that career into being a crime novelist?

I started writing fiction seriously when I was home with small children. (I know I’m not the only female author with that origin story.) I had been a trial lawyer, but had difficulty making that very intense career fit with motherhood. I think that speaks to how unfriendly the modern workplace is for moms of young kids. Being a writer gives one greater flexibility. I left my prosecutor job with a head full of great crime stories, so it was a natural evolution to start writing crime fiction.

On a purely-for-pleasure reading day, what are some books and authors that you reach for?

As you can imagine, I read a lot of thrillers. Favorite thriller authors include: Ruth Ware, Shari LaPena, Tess Gerritsen, Rea Frey, Mary Kubica, Kaira Rouda, Jessica Strawser and so many more that I can’t list them all. I also love fantasy and historical romance. My favorite all-time series are Outlander by Diana Gabaldon and A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin. I reread those and watch the t.v. adaptations. Deborah Harkness’s A Discovery of Witches series is a recent discovery and a new favorite. For classics, I return always to Edith Wharton and F. Scott Fitzgerald.  Their thematic preoccupation with wealth, class and status has influenced me greatly, and shows up in every one of my books.

If you had the opportunity to meet and talk with an author from the past, who would you choose and why?

I’m tempted to say Patricia Highsmith, because she writes the most psychologically acute thrillers of all time, and I find her utterly fascinating. But she was such a misanthrope that I suspect holding a conversation with her would be a challenge. Instead, I’d choose among the great literary wits, because they’d be fun to talk to—Dorothy Parker, Oscar Wilde, Truman Capote or the like.

How has your writing process changed since your first book?

I’m now on a deadline!

Where did your inspiration for A Stranger on the Beach come from?

A Stranger on the Beach is a sleek, propulsive story of obsessive love, told in alternating he said/she said chapters, in which one or both of the narrators is unreliable. Caroline is a wealthy housewife who first sees Aidan, the local bartender, standing on the beach outside her Hamptons mansion. When she discovers that her husband has been cheating, she has a brief revenge fling with Aidan that means nothing to her and everything to him. In her point of view, Aidan is a dangerous stalker. In his, they’re in love, and he’s protecting her from her dangerous husband. When the husband goes missing, who’s telling the truth? The book is very cinematic and takes inspiration from films like Body Heat and Fatal Attraction as well as psychological thrillers like Strangers on a Train and The Talented Mr. Ripley.

Without spoilers (obviously) do you have a favorite part, character, or aspect of A Stranger on the Beach?

Aidan is my favorite character in A Stranger on the Beach. He’s wounded and damaged. He tries to do the right thing, but he can’t help acting in ways that are bad for him and for others. Despite the trouble he causes, I empathize with him profoundly. All of my books have a character like that. In She Was the Quiet One, it’s Bel, the wild, rebellious twin who hazes her sister. In It’s Always the Husband, it’s Kate, the bad girl with the world at her feet. Some readers hate Kate, but I don’t. I love all of my characters, because I understand them.

I’m sure it’s blasphemous to even ask, but do you have a favorite of your books?  Or one that is just a little closer to your heart, maybe?

A mother loves her children equally, but at the moment I’m a little crazy for A Stranger on the Beach. It’s a tale of infatuation and obsession so powerful that it nearly drives the characters mad. It also has a great he said/she said structure that keeps readers guessing from beginning to end. But I also love my first two books; they’re my babies, too!  It’s Always the Husband follows three women who meet as college roommates and form a toxic friendship that turns to tragedy later in life when one of them is murdered. And She Was the Quiet One is a gothic murder mystery about twin sisters set at a remote boarding school.

I loved A Stranger on the Beach so much that I have jumped right in to your back list, but I’m dying to know what’s next!?

My fourth book, The Wife Who Knew Too Much, is coming summer 2020. Inspired partly by that great classic of psychological suspense, Daphne Du Maurier’s Rebecca, it’s the story of a waitress from small-town New Hampshire whose first love comes back to her years later. It would be a dream come true, except he’s married — to a difficult, controlling, uber-wealthy woman who then dies in an apparent suicide.  Our heroine goes to live with her love in his mansion by the sea. As she’s drawn deeper into the dark glamour of a life she’s ill-prepared for, it becomes clear to her that what a wife knows can kill her.
